1:03 I neglected to mention that a 4th declension version of praefectus, -ūs is not, as far as I can find, attested in Ancient Roman literature (praefectī would be the plural, 2nd declension). I had assumed that it was plural and thus 4th declension based on the English translation "we are agents," but I did not dispute this in the video as I should have. I also think he said "pāstus" instead of "passus" - so the mountain was gorged on fire for centuries, and now erupts.
Maybe he said, i am an official of the time variance commitee or smth like that.
Geologist and Latin student here! I took passus as undergone rather than suffered at first -- thinking he was saying the mountain underwent fire for centuries (regarding the buildup of heat needed to produce an eruption), but I agree with your second thought "pāstus"!! It would fit much better with Loki's flair for the dramatic, and the way stories / natural disasters may have been told as stories in Asgard.
This made me remember my random latin classes at school from grade 5 to 10... I really thought I had forgot all of them...
Just discovered this channel! I'm hoping you made a video on the latin scene in the movie "Tombstone"...Anyway, was Doctor Who correct that there was no latin word for "volcano" at that time? And, yes, I have often wondered if the ancients actually had some notional concept of "the future" as a "place" that could be gone to or come from...
I also was very confused. As far as I know the 4th and the 5th declension is never used for individual human beings. Almost all of them (4th) are abstracts coming from the past participle (like exercitus from exercēre) besides the very few words we have to learn on their own (like manus, domus, senatus et al.).
Funny tho that all the individual human beings built from the same stem regurlaly end in -or (or sometimes -trix if possible and female) like exercitor (again from exercēre) but this is not true for perfectus (from praeficere). Maybe this is the reason for your mistake :)
And yes the name Iesus is 4th decl. and some believe it was an individual human being but its not a real latin name :P
Loki in Rome: (speaks Latin)
Loki in Asgard: (speaks English instead of Old Norse)
I guess Norse is just dead in-universe even among the gods.
There COULD be a justification for that. Old Norse and English as they were spoken around the year 1,000 CE, were mutually understandable.
Asgardians as a species (at least in the comics) speak a magical language called all-speak, where everyone can just understand them. I'm unsure if this applies to the MCU though.

@@TameraJacobs exactly. I know Loki seemed happy/excited in the scene but a part of that had to be Tom's natural enthusiasm for using his education/knowledge of classics etc. His command of language is honestly amazing. Like you said, gorgeous, but also very intelligent.
I bet it was Tom Hiddleston's idea to make Loki speak latin. He's such a nerd and in a good way.
Also, he probably thought, "I'll NEVER have another chance to use my Latin in a project!" ^^

It’s more likely that the writers of the show decided to utilise Hiddleston’s skill set and have them go somewhere that Latin speaking would be necessary. Though I am sure that Tom was not displeased about this.

Hiddleston read Classics at Cambridge University in England and earned a double first. So one would expect his Latin to be correctly expressed and pronounced.

Luki is actually speaking in old norse accent, it's only by illusion that we hear him with British accent because it make him sound sophisticated and wise to American ears, and he's very vain. The Berliners in Avengers 1 probably heard him with high-class prussian accent or something like that.
I like this interpretation. And I'd love to hear just what in the hell Latin spoken with an Old Norse accent would sounds like!

Frankly there is no German equivalent to the RP accent in the UK.

The groot language is harder.
Conveying an infinite amount of ideas through three basic words. All about tone, pitch, inflection to actually express complex thoughts. And rocket understands complex thoughts from him, so clearly the language has that depth.

Executive producer means he put money on it, a lot of shows put the main actor as executive producer so they can get financing. Executive producers are more like a board of directors in a company, they don't influence the minor details of the show, they're more on the general direction of the product. I'm not saying that he couldn't have made changes to the script though, just saying that it's very likely that he didn't.

Watching Loki speak Latin in Pompei reminds me of the time I was in Granada with a friend and we only spoke Latin in public - we got a lot of strange looks! But it was worth it. Great and amusing video, Luke!
Tom Hiddleston went to Eton, so he most likely learnt Latin and/ Greek at school. They were required subjects at Eton once, maybe still are.
He mentioned once he had a choice to study between French & Spanish, or Latin & Greek. He decided to go for Latin & Greek since he thought he can pick up Spanish & French later on easily compared to Latin & Greek.
Maybe they'll have a future scene in Scandinavia or Iceland where he can speak his character's mother tongue!

I thought the fact he was a "god" justified how he knew Latin. But then I remembered he knew English before Earth was brought up in his life, and how every other being in space that knows nothing about Earth knows English.

Reading a translation of the Greek is like watching a movie in black and white
I’d add the caveat that it’s like watching a film _made in color_ in black and white. Films and TV shows made for black and white usually look good that way, since film makers know what techniques to use to make something look good in black and white. I feel like a film like The Lighthouse would lose some of its atmosphere if it were in color, and Steamboat Willie would certainly lose a lot of it’s charm.
Really love your in depth analysis of Latin in TV shows and it's very nice to see them getting it right, like in Loki or Barbarians. Latin is such a beautiful language, thank you for sharing it with the world!

Moritūrī became romanian muritori which means mortal,but can be translated,,those who die"
in Portugues we add a suffix "dor" at the end of verbs to mean " some one(or thing) who does that (verb)act" (like a profession) and "dores" in the plural.
So if we get the verb for to die "morrer" we could construct the term "morredores" "those who dies"
which by the way doesn't exist but it could have.
@@TheZenytram This suffix "-dor" of portuguese there is even in italian "-tore", french "-teur", spanish "-tor" or "-dor". But isn't the same thing of "-iturus": it derive from the latin suffix "-tor", used to create nomina agentis (name of agent, the one who act as you said).
Indeed morituri doesn't mean "those who dies" but "those who are about to die" or "those who will have to die" (future participe, indicates something you intend to do or are predestined to do or are about to do).

@@TheZenytram In Portuguese we still have “future participle” but it’s not common, we use a lot in law, the suffix is “uro”: “nascituro” (is about to born), “morituro” (is about to die”), “vincituro” (is about to win). Portuguese is very close to Latin, especially formal Portuguese.

in college i knew someone in classics and i was surprised that a night's homework for him was just translating a paragraph (to me it seemed like just relaying the gist of what was in the text) but it did take him a long time and he dithered over every word and phrase and order. on the other hand myself being in engineering, this sort of thing was pretty alien to me. oh but what you did reminded me of him. he used to look up phrases too in the historical record. oh another strange thing i didn't realize. he made reference to the pope's latin advisor as if he was a very good authority. i guess i'm not surprised such a job exists, but i didn't realize it had some kind of star status? :-D these sort of things make hanging out with people with different majors so interesting
Pompeii are interestings. In one hand it was a tragedy and many people died… in other it is a blessing for us to see how They lived, and understand this culture more. So yeah, maybe we can create good from tragedy (so bad forged into good, or something xD).

I had thought of this channel when seeing spoken Latin in Ep2 😆
I remember back in series 4 of Doctor Who (new version) where the Doctor and Donna went to Pompeii, they didn't have a world in latin for "Volcano", so I gotta say "having suffered fire for centuries" is a very fitting way to describe a volcano considering the polytheism culture of ancient Rome (it might make the locals think that the mountain somehow angered the god of fire and brought flames upon it for ages, not that knowing or believing it would have mattered anyway).
SUBSCRIBING RIGHT NOW! This was such a great analysis and, as a big Latin nerd, I loved every second! The moment he started speaking Latin and I understood the first phrase (I'm hyper rusty, I only did Latin for 3 years sadly!), I literally died! I really wouldn't be too surprised if Tom had suggested to speak in Latin or, at least, enthusiastically agreed to it! I think my fave moment in this video was when you talked about the importance of reading in the original language: in my short time studying, I had to translate a lot of Cicero's work (I WAS DEAD WHEN YOU TALKED ABOUT THAT EXPRESSION TAKEN LITERALLY FROM IT 😭) and it definitely feels different when you can read it in the original, and you discover and appreciate the myriad of different inflections and meanings a word can take. Very impressed by this analysis, and I will be digging through youe channel a lot! Maybe it's time to dust off my beloved Latin 😁 Gratias ti vi ago et vale! 😁

I actually personally pointed out that song to him some time ago, and unfortunately, though it sounds pretty- the Latin is really bad. None of the translations on that channel are very good, sadly. The Immigrant Song cover even got blasted for its bad linguistics.

When I heard the Latin part about the volcano I translated it as "That mountain has stored fires for a long time. It is about to explode, due to the fires." I picked up some Latin because of this channel, fun studying of prefixes and suffixes, movies, et cetera.
this video is fabulous! i literally have zero clue about latin (the only thing i ''know'' is 'draco durmiens nunquam titilandus' which apparently means something along the lines of 'a spleeping dragon is never one to be woken up' iirc) but you just bring the fascination for this language across super good and explain everything understanibly.

nice video! :-) which reminded me of a famous line in one old super popular czech movie (marečku, podejte mi pero): even a storekeeper in a screw shop can read vergil in the original ;-) when an above mention storekeeper asks the latin teacher what the knowledge latin is good for.

Very nice break down of the excerpt Luke. I was watching the series recently and it made me jump from the chair: Loki speaks Latin! Of course it does not surpirse me as a concept ;) but it was great to see him speaking Latin in the screen. One thing though, certainly the expression "(tempus) futurum" does exist in Latin, at least from a grammatical perspective. Wether it was used in a temporal sense, although uncertain to me, would make sense. But what made me wonder was: why in the plural? From "future events" (as it would make sense as a substantivated future participle)?

Dear Lucius, Do you have *any* idea how wonderful it is to be a student of classical languages and to stumble upon your channel(s)? Thank you for the massive effort you put in to making these gems: they are simply splendid and are the current subject of my binge-watching in an attempt to brush up my Latin and (hopefully) to be able to converse in it one day.
At the same time, I'm studying Greek (on term break atm) and our class is just about to embark on reading 'The Iliad'. There are no words to describe the joy and satisfaction of reading the ancient authors in the original. It's like having an intimate conversation, with access to every nuance: every secret smile or surreptitious snort!

When I was learning literature at school our teacher said that translator always gives a piece of himself when the translate any given text , sometimes when it goes trough many different translations it changes it previous meaning completely. That was the main argument against translating the Bibble to European languages. Some people still hold that the actual meaning of the ancient text is kept by the church or monks (for ancient Asian scripts) and honestly if you ever see a Polish translation of for example Snow-white story you could see how many different ways you can say : mirror mirror on the wall , who is the fairest of them all?"
You are a motivation for me, I want to learn Latin and Greek I know its not easy but I will :D
I am supprised that my latin isn't as bad as I thought. Maybe because the translation was so accurate? I was used to read classical textes at latin lessons some decades ago.
