My personal 'S' tier would be FFVI, Lufia II, and Ogre Battle (although I vastly prefer the PS1 version of Ogre Battle due to the text presentation). The SNES has some truly fantastic RPGs that honestly hold up thru the test of time better than possibly ANY other console.
Takeaways from this. 1) wow, remove the Japan only releases and the SNES RPG library is far weaker than I remember quality and quantity wise 2) This really reiterates how much everyone owes FF7 for popularizing the entire genre outside of Japan to the point the PS1 library of RPGs is nearly triple in size...
for me, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger & Secret of Mana are S tier alongside Mario RPG & FFVI. Robotrek & Breath of Fire are A tier for me. It's always interesting to see ho others feel about these things though, since tastes are so subjective.
EarthBound is quite possibly my favourite game, let alone my favourite SNES RPG, but I respect your opinion. It’s not for everyone, and you kinda have to acquire a taste for it, just because of how different it is from most other RPGs. In other words, you either love it, or you feel indifferent about it.
Awesome video Erick!! I was so excited when I saw your new video of ranking all snes jrpg games. I always wanted to know what you thought of Paladin's Quest and Lagoon. I've been wanting to play these 2 games. Trying to collect CIB of these 2 games also. But very hard to find. Love these videos Erick.
Its funny that you mention exactly those 2 games because I have never heard his take on Lagoon, but also Paladin's Quest I've only heard him talk about in a livestream and it was brief. PQ was very odd but I found the more I played it the more I liked it. Lagoon, the only difficulty I had with that game, the biggest detraction was the piddly sword striking distance. That made some fights horribly difficult for me.
@@MiamiSunrise Wonderful to hear from you Miami :) I'm happy to hear you enjoyed Paladin's Quest. I've always wanted to play it. Lagoon does look difficult to play. Wow very interesting list. I tend to agree with you on your other rankings but on SNES we diverge completely. Great video and as always enjoyed hearing your take!

Erick, I 'm begging you, focus more on this kind of video, ranking games is amazing, this is my favorite type of video. Please post for other consoles.
Love these ranking videos! Personally I would have put Arcana at "B" but I'm a sucker for dungeon crawlers. Also realized I really need to play Lufia 2. Nice work
How would you rate final fantasy 5 and the first 3 dragon quest SNES releases? I know they were never released here but I always consider those as SNES games
While it's a great game, I don't consider Illusion of Gaia to be a rpg. You gain no experience or stat or skills points for killing enemies, you only get stronger by clearing a room. You can only get stronger in a fixed way. It's more in line with adventure game mechanics than with JRPGs.
Breath of Fire II and Terranigma in B? In my opinion two of the best Titles on the System. OK, BoF II has some problems, but it still would be A on my list. Terranigma absolutly S tier.
yea terragnima its an A or S its a GOOD game btw check these star ocean, treasure of the rudras, tales of phantasia, shin megami tensei, secret of evermore, seiken densetsu 3, roman sing saga

I didn't realize that so few JRPGs were released in the west for SNES. Here in europe, we even got less. I guess my favourite JRPG on the SNES will always be Lufia 2. This game made me a fan of the genre.
Maybe, but the PS and PS2 was the golden age for jrpgs. I wonder why the PS3 and beyond era this started to die off... you get a few JRPGs that are well known, but not many people attempting a new series.
@@7dayspking I mean, only by the metric of the fact that "today, another Jrpg was made to add to the stuff that has already been made" Including RPG maker developed RPGs I don't believe counts. I think the last JRPG I can remember that wasn't a 'sequel' to a series is Lost odyssey and that was 2008
@@dragames There are plenty of games coming out of Japan that aren't sequels. Either way, there's definitely more of them being made now than before. They also have much larger budgets than they ever have, they are bigger games than they have ever been, are higher quality with greater production values than have ever been hit. There's far more people simultaneously developing JRPGs now than there has ever been. By any and all metrics, there's more JRPG's today and the industry is stronger than it has ever been. Most of those 80s and 90s JRPGs you're seeing have almost the same low production values as the 'indie' RPG maker games we see now. JRPGs like you see today did not even start to exist until the late 90s. Legend of Zelda didn't even include voice acting until Breath of the wild and Final Fantasy games were all voiceless until 15 years ago.
How can anyone hate BoF 2? Sheesh. Translation was bad and it could get grindy, but the story, graphics and difficulty is really sweet. I came for ideas on what else I should try that I may have missed. My personal ranking of what I've actually played and recall. S tier FF6 (my favorite of all time) A tier FF4, Chrono, BoF 2, Earthbound, Mario B Gaia, SoMana, C Evermore, BoF 1 I guess I should try Lufia 2. That seems like the only one I missed that's comparable to the others I loved.
Idk I tried to get into that game twice on wii u and it never worked. Earthbound wasnt even very popular back when it was new. I would slot it in the same place. Chrono Trigger on the other hand needs to go to s rank.
Breath of Fire is an old great. It has tons of amazing atmosphere and music. You have to understand the context and the time it came out during. That said, yes, it is a DEEPLY flawed game that has not aged well, has translation issues, and obviously quality of life issues today. It has earned a B tier rating on this list, it cannot be placed as comparable with any of the games on any tier lower than B on this list.
Tales of Phantasia DeJap patch was great on snes. (That infamous boat dialogue was fun). And ye Seiken Densetsu 3 (Trails of Mana) with eng patch was epic at that time.
Great video! Really enjoyed it! 👍 I only had a super famicom back then (Japanese) so I didn't play many RPG's. I knew some of them because of em******.
Secret of mana deserves to be an A listening. The music , multi player was a plus. There is something else, but since you haven't completed it yet I won't ruin it for you. Probably would be on A list had you finished. The rest of the list is great. I wish I still had Mario rpg
Honestly, I was _staggered_ to hear that he never finished Secret of Mana. That's like someone who claims to be an expert on beat-'em-ups admitting they've never beaten Streets of Rage.
Just a bit of friendly advice. Maybe you should play more than just the 1st hour of games before making judgements on them. A couple times I've heard you say that you've regretted placing games on your "hidden gems" list after playing them. Obviously you hadn't played more than an hour on them. It just saves people from thinking that you can't make a decisive decision by yourself, it looks weak if you backtrack. Also: the phrase "Hidden Gems" has been completely tainted by the likes of Metal Jesus Rocks and his crew so you might want to find another phrase to call these underrated and must play games 😀😀
This is far and above not all the snes/super famicom games on the system. There is far more and since you included Terignigma, i think its fair you include the other fan translation games as well.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it on your channel before (I know I have with others), but they completely changed the combat style for the SNES version of Lagoon. The reason Nasir's attack range is so hideously short is because they originally used the bump combat system (like in the first two Ys games) in the Sharp X68000 version. They basically used the switch animation (from sword sheathed to sword drawn and ready to bump) as the attack animation in the SNES version. While your mileage may vary, I enjoyed the Sharp version considerably more and the combat was better for it. Sadly, there is no English translation available.
Really??? Chrono Trigger is a definite S tier game, amazing story, graphics and game play by far my favorite rpg of all time, ff6 was good but not as good
Mostly agree. I like ff2 more than 3 though. I loved lufia 1, its even better than 2 in terms of balance for the late game. I like ogre battle a lot more too... I see the snes as the golden age of jrpgs. But the funny thing is Im not sure any of them qualify as S for me. Those would be the trails games, xenogears, and certain pc doujin games. The only one that might is SD3. But only in Japan =p. Maybe lufia 2 too. If only it doesnt become complete cake after you beat gades
I like the Uncharted waters games, and own both of them. As a huge RPG fan, I would put them in the same category as Aerobiz, Gemfire and Romance of the three kingdoms. It just doesn't go in the RPG category. You can totally cheese your stats at the start by rerolling, you have 'sailing' experience, and it focuses more on trade than fighting. You don't really even have to fight most of the time.
With SNES it's a bit sad, since we only got about 10%-15% of all the JRPGs in the West (just like with the original Famicom/NES), and us in Europe - even fewer than that... oh well. Some of my JP only favourites are Mystic Ark, both Super Shell Monster Story games, Treasure of the Rudras, Metal Max 2 and Monstania.

Really? only B rank for Ogre Battle, which is you can class change 3 steps for more than 20 classes plus with 30 maps with unique stories for each maps, and secret characters, and very good class changing system? I give "SS" rank for it .
This was entertaining, your dialogue is hilarious, mate! I actually agree with your ratings for all games except Earthbound. If you play along with the game book that came with the cartridge (I have the original set still), it adds a new dynamic to the game play. I thought the game was quite fun when using the book to play along. With this in mind, I would have rated the game a solid B. However without the book, the game play can get repetitive from the lack of direction, so I can see why a C rating was given for this title. Cheers mate...good job!
It seems like not many have been released outside Japan. That's not even a quarter of my snes rpg folder, and I don't have all either. The title is pretty clickbaity, if you consider that.
He did most of the SNES RPGs. It's not a Super Famicom list. He generally rates North American releases in his videos even though he added Terranigma here. How was it clickbaiting?
@@mysteryrpgs I don't know what he generally rates, and it's irrelevant here. I said it's clickbaity because the title claims the ranking includes "EVERY snes rpg EVER made" while it does not. And keywords such as "every" and "ever" tend to get overused to make videos more noticeable and earn more clicks. If the "released outside Japan" would be in the title instead of description I wouldn't say anything. Note that I'm not criticizing anyone here, just stating facts, and the impression I got from the title. He can name his videos whatever he wants.
@@mysteryrpgs SNES and SFC is pretty much the same thing, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not really familiar with western retro games community, do you say the game is for SFC when it's Japan exclusive and for SNES when it gets localized? Though I've seen quite a few nonlocalized titles being counted as SNES games, in this kind of videos. And so far I haven't seen any site that separates those. I don't know if there were restrictions on the consoles back in the day, but that's a region issue, platform is the same.
The SNES release of Final Fantasy IV that we received here as Final Fantasy II was significantly dumbed down. Many items that duplicated spell effects were removed, and most of the characters' special abilities were removed. So I'm a bit surprised to hear you say this is better. The original Japanese release was just as brutally hard as the PS1 port.
Super Ninja Boy was actually better to play with 2 player for another reason... The way XP was accumulated, you level faster with a teammate. Programming error: Instead of giving you double XP to split between people, just having a teammate just simply doubled your XP for BOTH characters, thus you level twice as fast.
Final Fantasy VI in the S, hooray! One of the best jrpg's ever. I also think Chrono Trigger is great, but the story is far simpler and more lighthearted than FF6. But I love that game too.
I think Chrono trigger's storyline gets really dark at points my problem is that Trigger's gameplay is... well a wee bit lacking and the game is super quick If you're going for a first time completion. Though the game banks on new game +, the first playthrough is super short.
First person I’ve come across that played chrono trigger and didn’t consider it top of the food chain. In my mind, it’s the 2nd greatest JRPG ever, adjusted for time/society-evolution, after FF6.
Chrono trigger I never felt was great, can't put my finger on why except the characters/story never grabbed my attention. Awesome music, graphics, fun-enough gameplay, I did play through it more than once... FF6 however blew my mind
@@tommj4365 that’s a good point. Maybe it’s the emotion of the storyline? I think that is, besides game play, the biggest difference between FF6 and Chrono Trigger. With Chrono Trigger- you had whimsy, happy, and slight drama. With FF6, it was a grand, majestic, emotional roller coaster that you really FELT.
Paladin's Quest was created by Hidenori Shibao and Legend of Legaia turned out to be a better game despite it was made in the experimental gen when 3D was first introduced.
I tried to get into Earthbound myself but I just didn't enjoy it very much. It felt a lot like LISA and Undertale in quirks but very poor by comparison.

16:58 funny enough, I was thinking that exact thing. 🤔😮👀
Veteran rpg player. I support your views on Earthbound lol
I like the fowl language that unexpectedly pops up... He is a saint and a scholar.
i saw secret of mana on here.. but what about secret of evermore?
More ranking series please!!
is it also possible to rank fan-translated jrpg regardless of platform
Hmmm. Now I have to track down a copy of Lufia 2 to play. Thanks for the list.
Lufia 2 is great but lufia 1 is horrible
Lufia 2 rules hard. Lufia 1 wasn’t that bad
It seems like not many have been released outside Japan. That's not even a quarter of my snes rpg folder, and I don't have all either.
The title is pretty clickbaity, if you consider that.
even worse in Europe, no Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger here
He did most of the SNES RPGs.
I agree with you for the most part, but what SNES JRPGs did he miss? Not Super Famicom, but SNES.
My top 6 in no order.
Ffvi , chronologically trigger, Lufia 2, Mario rpg, link awakening
The SNES release of Final Fantasy IV that we received here as Final Fantasy II was significantly dumbed down. Many items that duplicated spell effects were removed, and most of the characters' special abilities were removed. So I'm a bit surprised to hear you say this is better. The original Japanese release was just as brutally hard as the PS1 port.
The mobile game on hard mode is the best to me out of all of them. Masterpiece
Super Ninja Boy was actually better to play with 2 player for another reason... The way XP was accumulated, you level faster with a teammate.
Programming error: Instead of giving you double XP to split between people, just having a teammate just simply doubled your XP for BOTH characters, thus you level twice as fast.
Love this series! PSP next please!
Final Fantasy VI in the S, hooray! One of the best jrpg's ever. I also think Chrono Trigger is great, but the story is far simpler and more lighthearted than FF6. But I love that game too.
I think Chrono trigger's storyline gets really dark at points
my problem is that Trigger's gameplay is... well a wee bit lacking and the game is super quick If you're going for a first time completion.
Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite game of all time. Bravo Eric.
Paladin's Quest was created by Hidenori Shibao and Legend of Legaia turned out to be a better game despite it was made in the experimental gen when 3D was first introduced.
Do ps1 next
I think he did that one first.
Thanks for the video. :)
I like how FF6 is a tier above CT. People always talk about the two games in the same breath, I just can't agree.
Secret of Evermore missing or is thare a reason it was not included I did not notice by mistake?
Not a JRPG
Next up PS2?
The moment you put Chrono Trigger on the A tier and BoF2 on D, I know you can’t be taken seriously….
CT & EarthBound....he smoking something 💯
Great video would've liked it more if all rgps games were included...well at least the fans translated ones.
I tried to get into Earthbound myself but I just didn't enjoy it very much. It felt a lot like LISA and Undertale in quirks but very poor by comparison.
Didn't you play Arabian Nights ???
Hey Erick! Would you please share the link to the list template? I'd like to do it too. :D
Edit: Nvm just found it, I wanted to do my list before watching the video just for fun.
