Hey josh, great video buddy and it was right on time cause I’m trying to set up irrigation right now myself. I have 10 acres I’m currently growing on and still trying to get everything flowing smoothly and things are going pretty well right now.
I heard you say that you are in central NC. I am also. I am in a very small place called snow camp which is halfway between Burlington and Liberty NC or about 20 miles east of Greensboro. If your close enough it sure would be nice to maybe get together and share ideas and strategies and general knowledge possibly and see if we can help each other grow.

Great video, thanks Josh. I've got a small vegetable garden 40'x18'. After seeing this video I was inspired to install a single wobbler head 36" above ground in the middle of the garden - the sprinkler pattern covers the full garden. On the other end of the pipe I have a quick-attach connector for a hosepipe so all I have to do is click on the hose end and turn on the water. Maybe next year I will add an automated connection, but for now it saves me having to manually water the garden. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have the mini wobblers " next size down" at my nursery and vege patch . Wobbler sprinklers are the best i wouldn't use any other.

I'm looking for a different water system for my gardens. It's to hot here in the spring and summer for sprinklers The plants would sun blister but I think this would be a good system for in the winter. That's when it cooler here in AZ.

Do you put a couple of spent wine cap mushroom spore in your beds? We have wider beds on con a curve to hold more water. with wider roads with tons of woodchips in the rows so we don't have to irrigation. then we put spent spore in your pathways. we have irrigation options but for the last 5 years, we haven't had to. It's almost like we made a water diaper that keeps things just moist enough. to not need to water anything except for watering things when transplanted or directed seeded. we also get wine caps from time to time. we get a lot of free woodchips.

In the southeastern part of the state
Not a Lot of support for this type of farming, but charging ahead.
Water is my greatest weakness. Though I have a farm and field number ,I can't get a well permit the law here states if I'm within a certain distance of county water I can't have a well. The pressure on that system will run one one half inch impact. I have 6 50 by 170 gardens, access to water is killing my operation, but still a steady irritant to the system to get the well I need. Lost most of my transplants this year. I have used a small Artesia spring pond on the property in the past, but unable to use it now GAP certified. Nice looking Setup.
Eastern part of the state here, Don't over look rainwater capture. There is an urban farm in downtown Raleigh that has two massive cisterns they catch rain water in from nearby buildings to feed their hydrop operation. As for the well, that's got to be a zoning issue. You aren't supposed to or expected to feed an agricultural operation off a municipal water system. Check with the county coop extension to see if they can assist.
@@ryanwillett728 wish I had enough roof to run a cistern. There's hundreds of acres of swamp behind me. It is a zoning thing , many wells have been capped and converted to cou ty under the new regs. The problem is getting my registered farm recognised by the permitting process as a farm. I think I've got a channel opened between the ag people and the regulators ,but may be a year or more in the works. Got a call late Friday and getting an inspection in july. It's a matter of getting them to recognise less than dozens or hundreds of acres as a farm. Everything around me is rowcrop. I will loose a season to connecting all the dots ,and convincing them of the comercial viability of small acres. It seems To just be one more of the challenges of doing something out of the norm for where I live. Had one farmer tell me I couldn't call it a farm unless I was 100 acres and half a million starting capital. So.e vendors won't sell me seed unless it's exactly in traditional planting times. T I tell my girlfriend that I'm the two headed farmer. I'm verry rural and going against strong traditional concepts. The well will come, I just have to be prepared to.educate all involved in the concept of market gardening. Would love to visit the city garden.

@@charlesvickers4804 Actually, in NC, to qualify as a "farm" under the tax laws, you have to be 10 acres and produce a specific dollar value in crop, I think it's 10K - would have to look it up again. But the 100 acre farm thing is a farce and you can order seed online anytime you want. If you were speaking of Soybean, Cotton, Wheat, or Corn, yes you go to the back of the line for seed orders.
I'm well aware of what you are doing, because I'm doing/done the same as have many of the folks I work with in Carteret County, all of which are between 1 and five acres.

The sprayers look like they’re doing great, but senninger makes a mini 1/2” pressure regulator that every wobbler should be threaded into. 15 psi is the ideal regulator size and it ensures every wobbler is throwing the same distance and isn’t overpowered, or else you’ll experience a fine most that drifts away.

Hey josh. Nice video. I am not sure if anyone else commented on this but it would be good to have a back flow preventer behind those solenoids. You dont want any irrigation water to comeback into your house. Keep up the good vlogs.
Thanks for the suggestion and it is a good idea to have a back flow preventer in there. None of my systems (drip and overhead) are under pressure when they are off since they are open. They are also below the level of my house so in my case I'm not worried about water going into the house if the pressure dropped. But overall it is definitely a good idea to have one. Thanks for suggesting that!

I love your videos. Your farm is inspiring. After watching this I'm wondering. Does each row of wobblers have different pressure/water flow? I can't imagine every plant in your garden needs the same water which also makes me wonder, do you design your beds so that plants of equal water needs are together?

thanks for sharing. one question i have from using wobblers on my farm is how do you deal with areas of a block that get double coverage from the wobblers vs areas that only get hit by 1 wobbler? there's a trade off to make between larger areas with single coverage vs wasting water on the grass/weeds.
i've settled on making sure the blocks get close to equal coverage and as a result wasting more water on the grass. this reason makes me prefer drip lines though i agree with what you've said

Well designed. Learned a lot and am stealing your ideas to use for my personal garden. I'm on a well an sometimes lose power too.
I have an inverter (2400 watt), some solar panels, but no good batteries at the moment or I'd have an alternate switch to power it (more for house use than irrigation). I also saw some DC deep well pumps that could be powered directly from a charge controller on some solar panels. Either of those might be future possibilities for you. Thirdly, I'm also going to hand drill an old fashioned pump well with a rotary post hole digger as a last ditch backup (water table is shallow enough here), but I could also hook a solar powered shallow well pump to that.
We have borrowed our neighbors portable generator to get basic stuff running in our house. We rarely lose power for too long other than maybe during a hurricane. But there is plenty of rain then!

Suggestion, maybe i wasnt paying attention to your drip system but if you just tie the end if there is a clog, untie it and let the water flow. then you wont need a header on both ends

Ordered the wobblers today. One comment or question, am being told to-put in the pressure regulators, somewhere around 20 psi. Am on a well, pump puts out 60 psi. Thanks for you idea. I am going with pvc mainline, have had a problem with the plastic fittings coming apart. Am gone sometimes a week at a time , don’t need that to happen.

This is a cool video, but it would be helpful to know what each part is in the wobbler riser set up. I haven’t been able to find a video detailing this and I’m struggling to figure out which part to order online. 😟
Great video! I appreciate all the links. I’ll be installing some wobblers soon! Question though, if I’m running say 4-6 heads and using a water hose to get to garden, would 1/2” piping work on the hard lined garden bed side instead of 3/4”?
Thanks! I can't tell you for sure either way, but my instincts say you should use 3/4" tubing and make sure there aren't any diameter restrictions along the way. You don't want it going to 1/2" and then back to 3/4". Another constraint is your water pressure and the volume your water source can provide.
Hi Josh, have you ever had problems running 4 sprinklers in series? How long is each line? Would it make sense to have things in parallel? I am designing my system (for 1/2 acre) and I am wondering about pressure drop in a line of 4 sprinkler heads (elevated like yours, with 32mm PVC)

Yes, people have asked me several times about this. The system is not under pressure since I am using drip irrigation and wobblers. All of the irrigation stuff is located below the level of the house too. If the pressure dropped in my house, it wouldn't pull the water from those lines up into the house because there is no pressure there. But a backflow would be a good idea in a lot of situations.

Thx Josh - main Q I have: do you run your irrigation just under your switch pressure to avoid your well pump from cycling on and off? my understanding - you’d like to have your pump come on and stay on for the duration of the cycle. followUp would be, what nozzles and GPM do they run at? also, do you get any burning on leaves when you water in summer to “cool off your lettuce”? QUESTION Josh: So, where the Wobbler is first connected to the female pvc connector -- is that pvc connector "threaded" also? If not (meaning wobbler threaded and pvc connector smooth) how to you properly glue them together so that no leaks? Also, do you find these female pvc connectors at lowes or dripdepot? If you drain it, will this system tolerate freezing temps you get in Raleigh or do you have to take it all apart for winter?
Great video! How do you deal with the weed pressure you get from overhead watering? Just lots of pulling? I'm not far from you and moved to drip tape because over head was germinating just too many weeds, I also had to go to weed matting over the tape/under plant to help keep the pressure down.
I don't till and add generous amounts of compost. This acts almost like mulch. The key to reducing weed pressure is to eliminate the weeds before you even plant them. Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/sN-JCyM0HZs/v-deo.html

But what's your gallon per hour, I've tried not asking and following videos however I'm several in. What do you recommend gph for tomatoes peppers I've seen some lettuces on drip to percent first splash. I'm on my first year market garden weed pressure and available funds are putting a really hurting but not giving up love your videos and a huge fan!! Hopeful for answers.
This is an excellent video. I have a 16x50 foot (5 rows @ 30 inches) personal garden and I was planning on using drip for the whole thing. After watching this I'm considering just two of these wobblers in the center row. It would certainly be easier to put together (and cheaper) than a whole drip system.
I have a question that's not related to irrigation and I'm finding it hard to get answers. I haven't been able to find much information on crop spacing in 30 inch beds. Are you just spacing according to the seed specifications? Any information sources you know of would be awesome!
I noticed that in your tunnel you have two rows of tomatoes on the inside row and only one row on the outside. Is that due to the side walls "bending" inward and not having enough room for the tomatoes to grow straight up?

I think drip irrigation would help you reduce the amount of water use by alot. You're just tossing water around your ground while drip directly waters plants more efficiently.

I built this exact same irrigation system last year at another property and am planning to do the same for the property I am on now. I am seeing mostly greens, have you trialed this system with tomatoes and peppers and other summer crops? I would love to know what your experience was if so.

Amazing info bud question though. Any thoughts on ground prepping for someone that may live in the south west? Dirt is hard like clay and if u we're to set up an irrigation system for that how would u go upon that? Thanks if u got any tips. I grow successfully but I don't think the plants are maximizing fruit and veggies to the fullest size
We have super hard clay soil here in NC. I am adding lots of compost to the surface and planting into that. By broadforking and not tilling, the biology is slowly making the soil better.[
