Can this come back? I love these conversations within the community cuz no one talks about them and I feel like they should be talked about.
I'm Samoan, I dont have tattoos myself. About the armbands and sleeves etc with Samoan motifs, I'm not worried who gets those. If it has meaning for you and you want one, why not? I see the armbands/sleeves as contemporary expressions of traditional motifs, not the real Mccoy. They have become a fashion accessory, which just makes me smh and think 'woteva'.
The Pe'a and the Malu though, are another matter entirely. To me, they are traditional tatau which mark cultural rites of passage (as mentioned in this vid), they are not holiday mementos for tourists, nor are they fashion accessories for the wannabe cool.
That doesn't necessarily mean they are for Samoans only. If a non-Samoan is part of a Samoan aiga/community and is fully engaged in the cultural obligations, then I think that its fine for them to get a pe'a/malu.

I must say I am really and I mean REALLY happy that I found not only this video but your channel as well.
First off, I've been thinking about getting a Polynesian tattoo for the past year and a half now, more specifically a Samoan tattoo. During this time I have been researching and diving into exactly what is the Samoan culture. Of course, the inevitable question came up and I asked myself...Do I have the right to adorn this art?
So, it was comforting to hear Samoans basically say do your homework before getting the work done. And I fully understand, those who say not to have it at all.
The spirituality and the story that the tattoo tells is what drew me initially and my research is what keeps me grounded. To be honest, I think for the past year I've been searching for a Samoans blessing to get the tattoo. So, the question I leave you with is this: Shouldn't the artist who are putting the Polynesian tattoos on people take more responsibility, as far as, weeding out those who just want it for show and those who are genuine about learning about the culture?
Hi guys I'm Fijian and I don't know much about our history in tattoo but I have some knowledge given to me by my grandmother before she passed away, according to her Fijian tattoo was called "Na iqia" Tattoo artist were women. The Bati or Traditional Warriors are identified by their "Na iqia" (tattoo) also women was tattooed for protection but was outlawed by missionaries.she also told me that there were two beautiful twins that swam all the way from Samoa was also taught the art of "Na iqia" (tattoo) before they returned to Samoa. Well that's all I know about Fijian tattoo history. Vinaka.
I am Samoan/Maori. I wear a moko kauae, and have the permission from my Samoan matae to wear the malu when I am ready. For Maori ta moko, I feel that this is about your genealogy - that's why Maori tattoo is contrasted by the art form of kirituhi(skin art). I feel that Samoans are less concerned, unless you are wearing the Pe'a, or the Malu, which I feel are similar to ta moko, and should be kept by those who have the permission and genealogy. That is my feeling.
I'm really sorry if it offends people, but I got a Polynesian style tattoo. A half sleeve. I've actually done my research and have talked to some Polynesians who were fine with it. I'm Mexican by the way, and I love studying the Polynesian culture.

Why not get a Mexican tattoo or an Aztec one? Which are the original Mexicans.

I'm part Hawaiian Portuguese and Irish. I think like they have mentioned Polynesian tattoos have a meaning for every single person. You don't have to be a certain race to be able to appreciate the culture and lifestyle but you do need to understand what the meaning behind the tattoo is and what it truly means to you. Just my opinion about certain tats that are specifically for your blood line, need to stay within the bloodline. No offense but I would be a little irritated if I saw a person with no Samoan blood with a "Malu" because like they said in the video its special and sacrid almost and those kind of tats should be kept within the bloodline and culture of Samoans.
Wow that’s crazy. I am Samoan and Guinea Bissau but I was born in Portugal & I agree with African you have said. As a Samoan “Malu” is very important to us and for others to have it, I see it as disrespect.
For Samoan tattoo's - it depends on their reasons for getting a sleeve, taulima, tauvae - IMO, that would be more _acceptable_ than getting a Pe'a and Malu nowadays (Although you would still get a side-eye).
The *Pe'a and Malu* are truly sacred and has such a powerful cultural significance for Samoans - that is a no-go area for anyone who isn't affiliated with Samoa/Samoans.

I'm Filipino and have just had some work done. My wife and I got married in Maui and I wanted something to represent life's journey. Prior to my tattoo journey the artist and I spoke about what my life had been like. His work captured all that is important to me. Values like the joining of family through marriage, my commitment to protect marriage and family, and my respect to my elders. Elders living and passed.

I agree with that as it's right of passage in the culture, I commented about Polynesians wearing braids and using the N word, so I can understand the point compeltely
Improv Cooking Sleeves are not traditional. I think we can compromise with that. But the Pe'a and Malu.....that's thousands of years of tradition. That has to be held sacred. Samoa mo Samoa.

I think your tattoos speaks volumes about your identity and culture...a Samoan, Maori, Hawaiian etc would know exactly where somebody comes from just by identifying with ones tattoo designs....I suppose it makes more sense nowadays, especially when half casts get confused with other nationalities about their background and culture.
I love my Polynesians people. I am a African American and I live in Utah where there is a predominant race of Polynesian people. I dated a girl who was Micronesia. I know Polynesians have some heritage black Heritage inside them. I have always loved the Polynesian culture. The dances are very similar to African dances as well. I love my Polynesian peoples.
All of humanity originated in Africa.
this is a very enlightening discussion! after watching moana the Disney film, I started thinking about this. I've seen so many Vids on UA-cam about this and I've come to the conclusion that, for me personally, I wouldn't get one unless I went to one of the Polynesian islands and experienced some of the culture first hand and went to a traditional tattoo artist out there and had a chat with them and got to know them and they could decide if it was OK, but also not just that, but I'd want them to decide what to do and where it should go on my body. almost all my tattoos tell a story about my journey through life and my connections to nature and animals etc so I feel like I'd be disrespecting Polynesian culture if I just went down the road and told my mate to so a design I'd seen online lol
Personally I don't like it, I know and have seen multiple people here in the states who get Samoan tattoos and have NO IDEA it was Samoan. They tell me it's Aztec, Asian, and Indian tribal. Our tattoos lose their identity when it gets spread to those who don't have ties to the cultural background that comes with the Pe'a, Malu and just any tattoos. People are getting it because they do find it a trend. Keep it in the race or for a somewhat honorable person who is GIVEN the tattoo by Polynesian people.
a lot of Native American tribals look much like Polynesian tattoos, so you could occasionally be the one who's mistaken and not them.
Our tribals look similar, and it may have to do with the oldest North American bones found having rocking jaw which is an exclusively Polynesian trait.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to learn about any Polynesian culture I could. When I was little I’d always tell my parents that I was gonna move to Hawaii and learn all about their culture and become a hula girl, I was like 7 and that was my dream. Now in high school I still love to learn about the culture just because I find it so fascinating. And yes I’d love to get a Polynesian tattoo but not on some tattoo shop I’d want to get it from a Polynesian person. But I’m afraid that it’s disrespectful even if I’d know all about the culture because I’m not Polynesian. I still want to visit Hawaii but I’m gonna be realistic and say that won’t happen for years probably. (If anything in my response was offense I apologize and just tell me.)
Do you find it disrespectful if a Polynesian tattoo artists gives you one only after you first plan and talk it out, what it means and how it relates to you?

For the pe'a, I think that it should only stay within the Samoan community. The pe'a I think should only be for a "Matai" who knows how to speak. It's a show of respect not only for our culture but also within our community standing. I think it is an insult to see someone not of "samoan" decent receiving a pe'a but know nothing off our culture.
Just a question....so if a non samoan gets a pe ' a but understands the origin and respects the meaning of it,would you still see it as an insult?

I come from a family where my ancestors practiced tattoo In Fiji and told us the importance & how it has its valuable meaning which comes with customs.
In ancient Sāmoa, wearing a Malu and Malofie, you were no longer considered naked.
It doesnt bother me, I'd understand if someone did get offended. But I do cringe when someone says it "looks cool" opposed to saying "it's beautiful". The way someone describes it shows you intention. I just hope non-islanders research what it means and appreciate it.
I can understand the viewpoint of this discussion . If I had the money I would prefer to come over there, and learn first hand what the tattoos mean. I would love to get one done but would take great care to understand what it meant and what it stood for.

I am Samoan with Asian/Tokelauan/Tuvalu/Irish Blood. I got a Samoan tattoo around my right ankle, in my early twenties partly because I've had muscle cramps all my life Before getting the tattoo.
Oh man this was interesting, makes me more excited in designing my sleeve and getting it inked, FOR LIFE!!!...Though it takes a lot for me to laugh but what a great handful of down to earth familia faces as your panel... Tautua, tautua, tautua mo le aiga ma nu'u has been my understanding of what you really had to have under your belt and everything else would come naturally with it. E iloa le Samoa i lana tu, savali, ma lana tautala.. :)
I think you have to do your research if you are gonna get one. I have seen white, Hispanic that get poly tautau and I don't think they understand the significance, they only get it because it looks cool. I want to get a traditional Hawaiian tautau but I have to talk to the elders and get one that is relevant to me.

Im not a Polynesian but I do want a Polynesian tattoo on my lower arm, and a lot of people tell me go ahead as long as you respect the culture and the other tells me not to because it’s not our culture... I always wanted one because it’s so amazing and beautiful and really am learning the culture..
I'm micronesian and I'm using my mom's account and my family has our own tattoo design but it's like a Polynesians but different.

The English got the word Tattoo from Tatau Polynesia in 1700 but 200 years before that, the Spaniards called Philippines "La Isla de los Pintados" or "Island of the Painted Ones" when they landed in our shores in 1500 due to all Filipinos having tattoo from head to foot.
There's a book that was written in 1600 called "BOXER CODEX" currently being preserved in INDIANA University USA. It shows the Tattoo Pattern of early Filipinos with similar design to those of Polynesian. Go check it out!

In Polynesia they call it Tatau, Filipinos call it Tatak - meaning to imprint or mark.
There's also the first Filipino native that was taken to England as a slave name "Prince Giolo" in 1690. Prince Giolo had a tattoo from head to foot similar design to those of Polynesia.

Today, there's only few Filipinos practicing Tribal Tattoo due to Catholic Religion banning tattoo. However, the patterns are still being use in our Tribal clothing during Tribal gatherings and celebrations.

White guy of Scottish descent. I think it’s flattering to see people of non Scottish descent wearing tartans and kilts. It is helpful if they know the origins but still nice to see an appreciation of the beauty, even if they don’t understand it.
Im a Maori boy, I don't actually have any yet. But I have no problem with other races having anything, especially if they are respectful and have taken the time to learn about it. It's their money and their body, they have every right to do what they want, and we have no right to stop them.
Kao e hoa, Tamoko only for Maori WHO know their whakapapa and tūpuna. Just like pe'e and malu for samoans.

The thing about polynesians and Pacific Islanders is we give the credit to others...why dont we just trademark the motifs and keep it for us...who ever can get it...but the rights and traditions should be for Pasifika....the pe'a should be able only be Samoan....hands down
There is no question that these poly tats all tell a story & have a meaning. Some Asians Indians I know that were born in the South Pacific & now reside overseas & have poly tats as a memory & love or reminder of where they were brought up or born, some still have family in the 🌴 islands. So regardless of race or skin colour as long as it means something to the individual.
I saw a young girl in KRD with a Malu. I was disgusted. she was drunk as, and behaving inappropriately, and her malu was exposed as her outfit was short. I am an old school and I don't mind young Samoan women wearing them, but with respect.

I am Hawaiian and in my honest truth I agree with some of what they say, I believe if you appreciate the culture and understand it I think there is nothing wrong with it, but there are certain things that should be sacred to said person.

We have a tartan registry, where you can actually design your own family tartan. I think that we all need to be taught more about Polynesian culture, we simply never learned about Samoa, or any Polynesian cultural traditions at school. We learn about major religions, but not major cultures, it's strange.

I just found that I have Melanesian blood. However, I was born and raised in the states and have no ties to the culture at this point. I am doing lots of research and whatnot about it tho. Would it be disrespectful for me to get a tattoo depicting my heritage even tho culturally I'm just a "Black American?"
As an afakasi living in Europe, I'm not cool with Europeans getting Samoan tribal. It comforts me to see it because I miss home, but it angers me to see something that is a right of passage be used by those who don't have the faintest clue what it means to be Samoan, grow up as a Samoan, and live as a Samoan. 👍🏼💕

It's awkward to post here because I'm a Filipino-American but interested in the Polynesian Tattoo. Who determines the design or interpretation you will get after you tell your story to get the meaning of your tattoos? Does every tattoo artist layout the tattoo you described on paper before it gets put on to your skin?
There are many Filipinos that have polynesian tattoos... some for art and some actually engage in the culture whether they dance or play music... i myself have a leg tat that incorporates both filipino designs and polynesians designs... i play drums and sing in hawaiian, tahitian and filipino (tagalog)... so get something thats meaningful to you...
it is no different from someone who is not Asian that wants to get chinese or Japanese characters.... they should at least know the culture...

I’m a white guy who loves the Maori and Polynesian tattoo style, is it acceptable for me to get a tattoo if I research the meaning ?
I'm Maori and have no Ta Moko, which isn't really traditional Ta Moko BUT before I get the Mahi done I would like a pacific design integrated into my Ta Moko to pay respect to the originators Fiji/Samoa where ever it originated.

I can understand uneducated people saying that it is fine for non-Samoans to get Samoan markings. Jokes aside; yes no one owns the the patterns specifically. Nate is correct, the Pe’a itself in its full form is inherently carries the obligation of service. The Pe’a connects a man to his family.
I think its pretty cool that some people are so engaged in a culture that isn't theres that they want to have a permanent reminder. I think its ignorant when people get pasifika tattoos if they don't care for the culture.

You see I'm Samoan and the only thing I'mma say is that to have a Pe'a or a Malu is a birth right. Those are the marking of OUR people. I'll say the only exception would be if you were born into Foster Care and was raised in our Samoan culture from the beginning, then I would say that you earned your markings and you identify yourself as a true Samoan.

in Fiji, our forefathers tell stories of how girls were given a "gia" or "qia"(Fijian word for tattoo). there say this was done to protect there virginity. it was one of the many traditional practices that was later forebiden by the Tui Viti at that time (along with cannibalism n etc) due to the influence of Christianity in Fiji..
The Pe'a belongs to Samoan men who can speak and live in the Samoan community PERIOD. The Malu belong to Samoan women who also speak and are in the Samoan community. I think it should also be showed appropriately.
I have a question for you guys, if you can help..
I'm Micronesian, but grew up being connected with the Tahitian and Maori cultures, and being somewhat connected with the Hawaiian and Samoan cultures.. with the permission of my Polynesian family, is it offensive for me to get one? I know Moko isn't okay for me to get, because I didn't grow up in Aotearoa, and I don't belong to a Maori tribe. Any answers? :) Thank you!

I understand the controversy as an African American I used to feel some type of way when Polynesians use the N word or wear cornrows, I just think the world is getting smaller and we need to be more open minded. I would never want something so personal like a Pe'a or chin tatoo but a small homage to the culture as long as one doesn't over do it should be OK

i personally am a 16 Polynesian/Hawaiian but my mother is white and will not let me get a Niho Niho for protection she doesn't understand what it means and when i try to explain it she won't listen like i would understand her saying no to a Pawehe design i haven't earned it yet but i dont know what to do

As a part hawaiian I've done some research and my opinion I think you can get polynesian tattoos as long its by a polynesian person and a polynesian person only and you should know what the tattoo means and have a powerful meaning for it💯 and the tattoos you shouldn't get you shouldn't get a motaora or moko kauae or a puhoro and a pe'a or malu or some kākau my opinion.(sorry for bad grammar)

I believe tattooing did not come from Fiti as in (Fiji) it came from Fiti as in fiti-uta in Manu’a which is the birth place of all of Samoa. Either way love my culture and our people ❤️🤙🏽

I myself can't fully speak my language and would feel it be disrespectful to my ancestors to ever get any sacred Tatau or Moko. Untill I learn every aspect of each design and to speak my language fully then I will carry my Ancestors on my body.

Samoans are a mixed race from colonials like the Germans,British,Chinese and French who interacted with the local women. So I have no problem with palagi's having a Pe'a.

ok I am nowhere near Polynesian what so ever but I am captivated by the culture it interests me so much I wish to learn much more about the culture and all the meanings to each symbol and not if but when I get a Polynesian tattoo it will be the traditional way I wouldn't want it any other way no matter how much more painfull it is and yes I know that each symbol has a meaning to it and all of the symbols in a tattoo are who you are I just wish to respect the culture and its people you all captivate me
I would say people should be able to get a tattoo whether it means something or not. I don't think a tattoo needs to have a meaning, if I get a hulk pose on my back, it can just mean I'm a fan of Marvel Hulk. I think for the most part people are inspired by styles even designs whether it's from their culture or not.
Are the Eastern artists angry that The Last Air Bender is inspired by Eastern animation when created by Western artists? Hell are The English angry that their language is spoken by almost every country on this planet and creating words along the way?
