  • Part 7 of my openDog open source hardware & software Dog Robot. Now it's finally time for the electronics installation using Arduinos and ODrive Robotics open source brushless motor ESCs. There's quite a lot to this episode in terms of work and wires, as well as a lot of explanation about the setup!
    My open source robot dog project. It includes everything from 3D printing to coding, including a lot of CNC cutting and installing all the electronics myself.
    If you want your very own four-legged friend to play fetch with and go on long walks then this is the perfect project for you. This way a dog can literally just be for Christmas. The full CAD is available at the link below for anyone that’s keen to build their own.

    freaking awesome, as expected. the conduit was a nice touch. Each addition to the body (like the rack for electronics) seems really well thought out. great job!

      Umm... I'd prefer a standard black 1 inch split loom to those oversized yellow tubes, to be honest. Everything about the design so far has been form following function, and there's a real aesthetic appeal to that, but the yellow tubing looks kinda contrived. That sort of cosplay-style touch doesn't really suit this open source prototype, in my opinion, and standard split conduit is easy to get hold of. Also, so far everything that's yellow has been 3D printed, which is a brilliant design choice, and having the pipework yellow confuses what's what. My two pence worth. :-)

    • @cheesyboofs
      @cheesyboofs 5 років тому

      Maybe it just needs yellow tie wraps :)

    • @nagualdesign
      @nagualdesign 5 років тому

      The tie wraps aren't 3D printed either. I think it's better to be able to see at a glace which parts are 3D printed.

    James, before anything bad happens, please, put some fuses in series with the LiPos. Your not burning house will thank for them!

    • @MishoIV
      @MishoIV 5 років тому

      He still needs to run high current I assume, so even with fuses it wouldn't be much protected.

    • @chrisalbertson5838
      @chrisalbertson5838 4 роки тому

      @@MishoIV No. the battery will catch fire if shorted. It needs a fuse that is INSIDE the battery box before even the on/off switch. I learned the hard way but was lucky. I shorted a battery with a length of #6 cable and lucky for me the cable acted like a fuse and vaporized before the battery caught fire. Fuse size is selected to protect the battery and then after that one fuse protects each branch circuit based on the size of the wire.
      But he absolutly needs a battery protection fuse that is physically and electrically close to the battery

    • @MishoIV
      @MishoIV 4 роки тому

      @@chrisalbertson5838 Since I wrote my previous comment, I actually started implementing fuses in my projects and realized one thing. If you have fuse rated 40A, it won't blow at 40A. So if you have electronic that is using 10A constant current, but peaks at 70A, it can be fine to use 40A fuse.
      What I originally thought that if you have project that has 70A peaks, that you need to use like 80A fuse so it won't go off prematurely. And 80A fuse will protect you less against the short than 40A. That's why I thought it will be still dangerous even when he fuse it.
      Also why it needs to be close to battery? Does that make some change? I thought that fuse will work anywhere in the circuit.

    • @chrisalbertson5838
      @chrisalbertson5838 4 роки тому

      @@MishoIV Electrically the fuse can be anyplace in series. But practically one of the failure modes is physical damage to the wire. Lets say your robot rolled down a flight of stairs and there are broken bits of plastic and bent metal. and a power cable is mashed into the metal structure. If there is a fuse between the damage point and the battery it will blow but id the fuse is physically "down stream" it will not blow. Basically the damage took the fuse out of the circuit If the fuse is phyically locate near the battery with (say) a 2 inch long able then there is very littel chance of that short cable getting damaged. THis is a good reason to mount the fuse and battery in the same metal batery box
      A machine is only safe if it remains safe AFTER a serious accident. This is what makes safety design so hard. On a car you'd like the gas tank not to explode even after you are rear-ended by a truck.

    • @NathanRae
      @NathanRae 6 років тому +1

      Sure. Event organisers (who like risk assessment forms) would probably feel better about public demonstrations if there was a stop button on the remote that anyone with no training could hit at any time...

    • @jamesbruton
      @jamesbruton  6 років тому +17

      I'll consider a 'motor enable' switch on the remote when I get there. The red button on the robot is probably better for the person getting squashed though ;-)

    • @ransombot
      @ransombot 5 років тому

      Might also think about defaulting to e-stop on lost contact with the controller. Keep it from running away unless an advanced mode/autonomous mode is flipped. Keeps the controller simple to many buttons isn't good for demos and off should be off. Should also help with someone trying to hijack control getting shut out without physically resetting/tampering with it.

    Fantastic!! Nice board trays. @@ Looking forward for more.
    Others have commented about fuses. It's not a bad idea, usually a power distribution board makes sense. I don't know the current draw of the motors or the rating of those wires but maybe a 10-20 Amp poly-switch resettable fuse per section would do the trick. What's nice is that those just shut down temporarily.
    It's also important to remember that the main goal is to protect the wires, so sometimes protection needs to be cascaded with the wire branching or into the end devices.

    I can see it being fine with walking, and more than robust enough for a heavy load out with this particular drive system (screw drives being inherently self-locking), however it seems like there's a lot of spool-up or spool-down inertia to overcome in order to get some fast movement for running or jumping. So it'll be interesting to see it in action.
    Might have to consider a linear motor setup or compressed air piston actuators for a fast version, but trade-off having less ability to carry heavy stuff or hold position when unpowered.
