@@Me-uv6kc I mean, I have watched and listened to this opera since I could walk and comprehend words and the way it's portrayed here is tragicomic and as a form of Pappageno's over-dramatic emotional expressions. Even I as a small child could comprehend it that way, especially because you just know he's a drama queen and there is always a last minute save. XD The killing of the dragon/giant serpent always disturbed me a bit though. All in all this opera is a lot more suitable for children (and it IS a hit with children) than some that are children's operas like Hänsel and Gretel, at least of you are a child that is easily scared. Because damn, that witch is scary. lol
Mozart was such a genius... Nowadays, people seem to forget what he created a few hundred years ago. His operas are unbelievable and the best of all times.
It’s a great duet but the role is a small part. She doesn’t get an aria and is in very few scenes. Even the three ladies get more singing to do in this opera and more time on stage. Pamina and The Queen of the Night are of course the biggest roles. If you haven’t listened to the whole opera Pamina has some very lovely music and the Queen of the Night has two show stopping arias.
@@nathanswanson1040 Pamina and the Queen are a little out of my league vocally, but I can see myself as Papagena. Even though it’s a small role, I’d love to do it just to get to sing this duet 🙂 (But playing one of the three ladies would be fun too! 🙂)

How do you explain to your children why Papgeno is so sad at the beginning of the scene and the unsettling rope that dangles from the ceiling? Does he hang his bird cage there? ;-) When I wanted to show this scene to my children for the first time, I immediately went on a slippery slope...
I have always loved this version , but today I realized by I love it much it's because papagena acts so much like a bird!!! Her head tilt to her walk!!! Very bird like
I've never seen Papagena cuter than her. 😍 She really suits her role so much that she might have been born for Papagena Also, the costumes of Papageno and Papagena are wonderful.
She is incredible. The singing. The acting. She conveys real feelings in her sweet face. Certainly, she has to be a truly warm-hearted person to be able to perform like this❤
My grandson, 5 at the time, learned this aria in Kindergarten and made play this clip over, and over, and over, again. He loved it so much. And grandpa enjoyed it too.
he's honestly the best Papageno I've heard. Not that he's the best lyrical baritone, but because of his interpretation. He understood how to sing the aria. Whereas every other Papageno sang it like some timid whiny comic relief clown, Roth sang it as how it is supposed to be sung, with power, emotion, and musicality, and clarity of language (listen to his "pa..pa..pa." no other baritone sang those so powerfully like he does). Papageno was never never a comic relief character for me (even though his character does have the comic elements in them), but it is a melodramatic one characterizing the idea of a flawed man who received love despite not deserving it. And Roth IS Papageno
+AstriaICOW I perfectly agree with you.. For once i didn't see two clowns histerically hugging like in a sort of comic gag.. they truly depict the emotion of two lonely souls in the moment they realize they found their mate.. the way that Papagena/Le Roi falls in his arm then, trembling and shaking of happiness, is pure poetry
im not agree, Papageno is obviously a serious character, but as Mozart used to do, it´s a comic character to. Look at Leporello in Don Giovanni for exemple. Just before this scene, Papageno didnt want to suicide, so he tried to save himself counting 1, 2 and 3. This shows that Papageno is not a clown, but it´s a character that you can play with a bit of comedy. That´s why i guess that Anton Scharinger is the best Papageno ever (in my opinion). Sorry for my english, but i wanted to give my opinion jeje...
manuel fernandez I'm not sure which of what you said is different from what we said other than the best singer to sing Papageno. Detlef Roth has a bit of comedy also and he didn't make a clown of himself, that was the point. nowadays nobody sang Leporello like the clip in Amadeus anymore, with good singing. The point is to let the MUSIC carry the emotion, the comedy etc. Mozart is difficult to sing well so taking too many liberties for the sake of emotion, when the emotion is clearly written in the music, would compromise the music of Mozart. Anton Scharinger is really good. Beautiful lyrical voice. But he's not special like Detlef Roth is. He played Papageno as any other Papageno. Too exaggerated in emotion, many times even compromising the tempo of the music as he would rush here and there a little and uneven phrasing in some of the legatos, and also doesn't harmonize as well, which is sort of a travesty as Mozart is pretty much the king of harmonization in Operas. So I would disagree. Don't get me wrong, he's really good, nowadays you can't find a singer as good as either. But Detlef Roth is unbeatably unique from the perspective of keeping the music as true to Mozartian as possible, and focusing primarily on making sure the singing is good rather than taking liberties for the sake of "comedy."
I was fortunate enough to have an actress as my mother. The very first type of music I was introduced to as a baby was Mozart the magic flute. The entire soundtrack was on constant repeat growing up. This is was always my favorite song, still is.
This is my favorite Papageno. German is not my first language and opera is hard to understand in general, but he sings so clearly that I can understand what he´s singing.

Absolutly marvellous, this opera and all the Mozart's musics. Mozart is a real music's genious, it's not possible to forget him and all his masterpieces. He is immortal for ever.

That duet was a very beautiful song. I also feel that the actors play their parts so well that they are really the character and not the actor. And of course, their good looks were icing on the magic cake.
1:22 I love that whole sequence how the music mellows out and the descending scales. It's as if the actors are slowly floating, falling into love. Mozart was so good at composing this type of thing.
Mozart, who was perhaps, the biggest intuitive genius of harmony, said that this without dissonance, would be unbearable, was also the first musician to realize he could give psychological depth to his opera characters, through music. In “The Magic Flute” we can see this. For example Tamino and Pamina, noble characters with high ideals, who sing calm and serious melodies, the Queen of the Night, whose diabolic characteristics, are expressed through fast notes in the vocal area of extremely high notes or the dear and familiar vision of the common people, in the gay melodies of Papageno/Papagena.
I don't see how depicting a female as the villain is sexist. Quite the opposite, it depicts a female as an incredibly powerful figure who creates a scenario that is almost impossible to overcome because of her wit and power.
Both are great and very complementary actors and singers. The wonderful costumes perfectly serve the characters and performance. Really pleasant to watch/hear.
