Yup, you are correct in removing the negative first, as long as it’s the one connected to the ground/frame. In some instances, the positive is connected to the frame, as in old Volkswagens, tractors and such.
For those new to working with a lead acid battery system, the reason for the above procedure, is to prevent a short circuit between the battery and nearby grounded frame. A short circuit could cause the battery to explode, because of the presence of hydrogen gas, that has been produced during a charging battery.

    A couple o tips...
When cutting the tail off a zip tie, use a lighter and melt the sharp edge. It'll round off and not cut you to ribbons. I hate leaking on things when working on them...
Also a glob of silicone does a great job of stopping wiring from chaffing against other components. Even plastic covers can wear through wire insulation and allow corrosion or shorting. Take care guys! 😎

Really, I'm glad I live in the Show-Me State and don't believe anything they have to say. U ever seen how big copper rods were in lighting rods were? Why don't they use them now the military came up with them tested them. Because they found they get real hot and they burn everything down. No more lightning rods in the military???? Believe if u want too. But I'm saying it won't work. Keep the battery out of ur old Farmall it may start with a crank or two or a push down a hill. Because those sheds in the Carrington event were grounded they burnt down , because the current had the least resistance to travel unhook ur ground so it won't want to travel. You need 2 emp devices on your generator. 1 to protect your 12v starter circuit (which you have) and 1 to protect the ac power side of your generator…which the 12v one you have will not do. The ac side emp protection should be either 120 or 240 type devices depending on if your generator is 120 only or can do both 120 and 240.

I noticed in your video, that the green light on the emp shield stays on... do you think it can drain a battery if the generator is not run all the time? I mean, it must be a parasitic draw on the battery.

As the warranty states $25,000 equipment cost replacement. I've been working as a low voltage engineer for after-market electronics from radio P25 EQ to emergency management systems. The issue is about EMPs. EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) isn't a directional event in nature. If it happens it is a worldwide issue and an event that will more than likely change our futures forever. If it's a natural event from the sun, then I would call it a brute force attack on our entire electronic/electrical systems from low voltage to our extremely high voltage transmission switching stations that deliver our electrical energy throughout the world. With a coronal mass ejection which includes is a solar storm that delivers a high energy plasma charge into our atmosphere. Our last noticeable event was in Canada in 2012 but you probably didn't know the event happened since Canada took the brunt of the storm, but in 1859 a large solar storm caused destruction to our newly formed telegraph system throughout the United States. Most of the hardware was burnt to a crisp and either burned in a fire or just melted. this event was witnessed worldwide, but not many countries had telegraph systems.
So, these little boxes will save the day, which I highly doubt. It doesn't matter where you would install the device, it just will not stop a brute force attack that high energy plasma will find its way into a cars electrical system causing your cars computer to short and die. The cars computer is a seal aluminum cased unit, but the wires that run throughout your car will act as antennas funneling this highly charged plasma energy right into your computer. The only real sure way to protect any electronic device is to place it in a faraday cage which will allow the electrical charge to fixate around the item inside the cage. Do not ground a true faraday cage as the cage will then act like an antenna. Always remember anytime of electricity DC or AC looks for only one thing in its life. The fastest path to ground.
Now, Let's talk about these EMP Shields. If you are so lucky to be a part of a solar flare event with a high plasma coronal mass ejection that hits the earth, that company EMP Shield will not be in business anymore. The business itself is selling a product that once it fails, it's going to fail big. So, selling a $300 device until a CME happens is just a roll of the dice. The company is betting that during the life of the business that a CME will not happen. If it does happen, it's just not your issue only, it will be the 200,000 other EMP Shields that will also fail. As they say get in line as your piece of the pie during its payout will be less than a penny! So, they are betting on your paranoia and your prepping check list that you will have the sense (not commonsense) but peace of mind sense. Hey if it makes you feel good enough, pay the $300.00, but just don't come crying when your EQ doesn't work anymore.
Let's talk about Thermal Nuclear War and its EMP effects. When Talking about a nuclear device blowing up in the upper atmosphere, it's trying to create a Carrington effect like a CME, but it's going to be a lot weaker than a CME solar flare. But the one thing it does have is speed. Without getting too technical you want protection in the nanoseconds for at least two or more times in protecting electronic devices. Those surge protectors you by a WM or TRGT are similar in design, and they do a relative decent job when lighting strikes as lightning does create a localized EMP of short. But it's the speed of the device that will protect your equipment. According to EMP Shield it's the fastest commercial EMP device on the market, maybe, maybe not. But you can build one yourself just as fast as they do. You can create a large faraday cage that is EMP proof or build a fast reaction surge device under $50.From Ferrite suppressors, MOV's, Bandpass filters etc. There's a host of on-line circuits that you can build for pennies vs. buying a $300 device.
Oh, By the way, if someone detonated a nuclear warhead 200 miles above us, I can bet that again, once you find that your EMP shield failed, As you just can't bet the farm on a single device installed in a vehicle protecting the hundreds of wires leading to devices and computer that act as a antenna causing a death short or that your 6 flat screen TV don't work anymore in your house. Well, let's just say you're going to have to wait until the war is over, which shall be short, but I suppose the customer help line will be lacking that human element. I'm sorry for such a long response, but I want to make it clear that these miracle devices to save the electronic world are nothing more than a miracle dream, as you will sleep better knowing that if you spent $300 on a protection device that it will work.
What you can do is buy a metal trash can, throw all your Electronics in it and seal it airtight, I just saved everything for you costing about $14.00. Good luck to you all.

That's how my dad is I stay with my dad and cuz he's older my mom has some health issues so when I lost my home over a year ago we stayed me and my lady stayed with him to help out though homestead and he's got a generic generator and a state that is undone anyway we keep it covered up it's a older model at least 20 years old but it is brand new because we keep it up we keep it covered up and well shield it what thing about a gas-powered generator is that you can store fuel in it you don't have to run it dry but always cut off the fuel valve and then run whatever fuel that is in the carburetor or jets and run that part dry and then if you store like we do a full tank of gas in your generator put some stable or gas lifesaver stuff in there and that'll keep the fuel for about 2 to 5 years if you got 93 or 91 high octane gas then you should be able to keep that in there for a minimum 2 to 4 years with the stable in it I've had gas way older than that run for 5 years before it's this weekend's down now if you put fuel with ethanol in it then always keep the stable in the fuel if it's new or old because even if it's new gas with ethanol blend it will come up during the winter season in the summer it's hot down here and it gets about 70 to 90° during the nights so you know that's pretty warm enough to keep your oils and your fuels broke down but it's not a computerized one for the most part we also have a 6-ft ground rod 6 ft in the ground with a copper ground wire attached to the frame and grounding of the generator to that and I believe that with an EMP having a 6-ft ground wire like your house then that will help significantly now one of the reasons that your vehicle has such a hard hit from a NPR solar flare is because your vehicle has rubber tires and an electrical shock to the casing of the motor or the actual body of a vehicle if it's all metal like mine then you have a less chance but if you have these newer trucks and cars that 50% of your body's plastic then the motor the electronics and the frame is going to take the electrical shock furthermore with Robert tires on it there's no way for that current to go hit your vehicle and then to the ground and ground out so the shock stays inside the vehicle if you have a way to put your vehicle so you parked your vehicle at night in a shed have a ground wire into the six feet deep in the ground and hook a pair of jumper cables to it when you park it and then hook the other set of cables to under the body frame that'll give it a grounding to the ground that'll help take a lot of shock out of it it could also help it from being damaged if lightning hits it or anything else always put your trust in Jesus God bless you all because they're they're contrail and every day chemtrail and it's getting worse and I pray to the Lord about it and I believe it's not coming back like it was the horses are out of the barn if you get what I'm saying the four of them and Danny like you said and all this that I somewhat listen to in the word I believe that it's all happening at one time so we just need to be prepared and prayed up obedient to the Lord the best that I can and we can God bless you God bless you all Jesus loves you and I love you all praise Lord Jesus Christ our Lord and Master forever

If there is an EMP, that 'shield' / 'surge protector' will not stop the rest of the electronics from being fried. When an EMP occurs, the charged particles come from all directions. They are not going to magically run to the emp shield and suddenly stop. The only way to stop an EMP from damaging electronics is to place the electronics in a faraday cage.

    • @DeepSouthHomestead

@@DeepSouthHomestead No... this is simple fact. That little box cannot bend the laws of science. I called the EMP shield company, and they would not say that electronics are protected from all directions.... which an EMP is in fact charged particles coming from all directions. They would only say that it would protect a charge coming from an outside source from an incoming power supply.

If you can find electrical engineers to agree, I would still not trust it. A Carrington like event will smoke the wiring under your hood along with all metal of the vehicle. A dear friend of mine had his entire network destroyed because the cables of the network were nested with the power cables. (Bel Terra Casino under constr.)The induction fried the system. Those safeties didn't help.
Add to that, they use residential wire on a vehicle. So if there is an issue, no insurance will cover you. Probably void the warranty as well. And after the event, no one will be around for complaint.
I am not unfamiliar with the subject. Lifelong mechanic, electrician, electronics tech, computer specialist, and well read. You do you, but I will stand clear of gimmicks.

I am retired after working 40 years as a design electrical engineer in aircraft, the power company and several other defense jobs. An emp protector is just a waste of money. Are you trying to protect against an emp from a nuclear detonation? The only way I know that you could generate a large enough EMP to test such a device is to be in close proximity to a detonation. If the blast came that close you would have a lot more to be concerned with than your generator should you survive.

@@bryanst.martin7134 There has never been any evidence of a solar EMP that I am aware of that has caused electrical circuit damage. From what I know of electromagnetic radiation the sun is too far away from the earth to make an EMP with enough energy to cause any damage to electrical circuits. One could use the same FSP (free space loss) equation used in calculating microwave paths to get an estimate of the largest amount of solar EMP energy possible which I would guess to be less than a micro-watt . The attenuation is a function of distance and frequency. The frequency of an EMP is wide band which can be calculated using the fourier transform. A solar EMP is just more fear mongering repeated by the propaganda ministry.
