  • Immiserising growth is a concept in economics that refers to a situation where a country's economic growth leads to a decrease in its overall welfare or well being, despite an increase in its aggregate income or output.
    Even if the wealth effect, by itself, tends to increase the nation's welfare, the terms of trade may deteriorate so much as to lead to a net decline in the nation's welfare. This case was termed immiserising growth by Jagdish Bhagwati.
