The absolute best bolt rifle I've found for teaching my kids is the CZ 455/457 Scout model. Super short LOP and the stock can be changed out for a full size model when they grow. Not only is it a tack driver but it is one that they can keep their entire life.

Ruger makes a mag for the 10/22 that only holds 1 round. Aftermarket makers have a “sled” for the 10/22 that allows loading from the top without removing the magazine. Both are available for those concerned about shooting 1 round at a time. Or you could load the magazine with just 1 round. I don’t know if this has changed but when I was looking at the “Cricket” I saw that unloading a cocked rifle was only possible by holding onto the cocking knob, pulling the trigger and gently lowering the cocking knob... not my idea of safe. Something to consider for those considering a child’s rifle.

    3 things
1 it is up to the parents as to if and when kids learn to shoot.
2 the kids mentally and temperament should be considered
3 kid should feel comfortable with what ever rifle they start with

I taught my nephews to shoot with a Springfield-Savage model 120. This rifle was the same rifle I learned to shoot with my grandpa in 1969. I am waiting for my grandnieces to get old enough to teach them the four firearm safety rules and marksmanship with this fine old rifle.

    Mr. English,
I feel I must thank you for an excellent video. Very well stated and factual. It is refreshing to find someone online who is an expert on firearms and shooting. Too many self-proclaimed experts these days.... Far too many! As you well know, an adjustable stock is on the gun-haters list. A list that is far too long AND so un-American......!!!!!! I was born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia. Heck our state flag has an image of a man with a rifle. For you all information WVU the flagship university in West Virginia is home to a national ranked shooting team.... West Virginia is the most successful college rifle program in the United States, winning a total of 19 NCAA national team championships. They have won 25 individual NCAA championships, produced 65 All-Americans, and 13 Olympians. Not bad for such a small state..... Lastly Mr. English keep your powder dry!!! And once again thank you.....

I strongly believe that all boys should begin rifle training around the age of eight. This training teaches several skills. Respect for one's teacher, for the safety of other people, and the importance of proper maintenance of equipment. And of course, marksmanship. Personally, I was started on a .22 caliber single-shot bolt action rifle, and I loved it. I was able to hit a barn from twenty feet away. But in spite of the fact that a .22 caliber rifle is a good starting point, most boys want to move-up to higher calibers after only a month or two. This creates several issues. First, most gun ranges don't have a variety of rifles for rent. Secondly, it's hard to tell how much kick a student can handle. And third, that ammo gets expensive. So promoting a young man to bigger guns can be challenging. But there's a way around the problem. Instead of giving a boy a gun that fires real bullets, give him a rifle mounted on a pneumatic piston-driven aluminum rail. That way, the kick of the simulator can be set from .22 cal, up to 30-06. So the boy can progressively get used to higher levels of kick, without having to worry about losing control.
If you wanted, the rifle simulator could have a laser which strikes a digital target downrange. And the rifle could be set for single shot, small bursts, or full auto. And there's no danger of a loose rifle, and no ammo expense. This would allow a bunch of boys to go the range and spend the whole day trying out different rifle calibers. But the power selection for each gun would have to be controlled carefully by the instructors. Perhaps a central command post, or a locked panel on each rifle. If not, then some kid will decide to go straight from .22 caliber to a .50 caliber sniper rifle. For an eight year old boy, that's a bruised shoulder.
The whole idea is to get the kids used to the feel of the gun, and let them practice for hours in a safe environment. But a simulator is not a real gun. So after a few weeks of simulator training, real rifles would need to be brought into the training class. That's when boys discover the smell of gunpowder, how to strip and clean a rifle, collecting brass, and bragging. That's the most important part.
