The genius here is that the muffled cries of Hugo (the villain if you will) is the creepiest, and moving, moment of the scene. This is still the greatest horror film ever made.
I've seen this movie a couple of times but this is the first time I realized that his lips are moving ever so slightly when the puppet speaks. Just enough so it could be him making the voice, or he could just be sort of twitching a bit...briliant!
This story was way ahead of the curve! Maxwell brilliantly played by Michael Redgrave was the tormented straight man who breathed life into Hugo which made him so real &. Creepy! So real that Hugo had a life of it's own. As a young child I would watch the whole movie waiting to be scared by Hugo at the end. This premise has been copied threw out the decades but never duplicated. Hugo was the Great Great Grandfather of "Chucky", Lol &. Every demented doll that came after him. The ending of the film itself with a cameo by Hugo is chilling &. A Horror Classic. This is the stuff that creates film lovers.
All the CGI in the World will never come close to matching this! Sometimes it's just about the story and supreme acting. Modern horror films could do worse that take a look backwards.
A superb film. Redgrave gives a masterful performance. I often used to sit near the photo of Maxwell and Hugo. It was in the Red Lion pub opposite Ealing Studios on South Ealing Road.
Classic ! They show this movie on TCM from time to time and it's really good. It's very subtle and understated. Also, it's more cerebral than most horror films.
Damn Hugo is fucking creepy! The part where Maxwell says Hello Sylvestor in Hugo's voice creeped me the fuck out! Not to mention Hugo saying Wouldn't I?
Absolutely adore this film and it must have made an impact because it stays in my mind to this day..I was probably about 8/9 when I first saw it and yeah it did give me nightmares for a while, but by the time I was about 12/13 my dad would regularly take me to the pictures to watch horror films (X rated in those days). My mum used to even help put a tiny bit of makeup on so we could both get in. Gave me a lifelong love of horror movies!!
I maintain the scariest element of this entire movie isn’t Hugo being alive and evil, but Maxwell being tragically emotionally bound to him. Maxwell clearly loves this twisted creature beyond all reason, so Hugo assumes he can get away with inflicting any torture he wants. At 2:43, for the first time Hugo feels the power balance shift as he sees the rage in Maxwell’s face, and tries to backpedal but it’s too late. Still, even as Maxwell suffocates Hugo, he holds him close and caresses him. And when Maxwell finally snaps it’s not after almost killing a human being who showed him compassion, but only after he destroyed the thing that deliberately ruined his life. In the hospital he appears to be in a state of shock from grief, and probably guilt. I believe Hugo did not truly possess Maxwell, but Maxwell spoke in Hugo’s voice and became a “dummy” in an attempt to bring him back, even though it meant losing himself entirely. What a powerful combination of conflicting emotions. This segment broke my heart.
I once had a nightmare about a ventriloquist dummy with a similar feel to this film It was black and white and the dummy was sat on a table talking to a man doing electrical repair on a wall. He thought it was a prank and went along with it Then the dummy raises itself up onto its legs like it was levitating, and its voice became very deep and aggressive "I'M ME!! I AM ME!!" It screamed It then produced a gun and shot the man dead Its words have haunted me ever since
this is another great horror film that has been forgotten about. There's no trailers or reviews for this film on youtube. Why? I thought the story with the mirror was a little to long and was baffled why the director had that comical story about the golfers in this. At any rate this is one of the greatest horror films ever made.
I have heard this movie was made in 1945 but didnt get on the cinemas for 3 years after the second world war.In my opinion it is brilliant and HG Wells wrote one of the stories I beleive(the time machine)so what imagination HG had.I think it would still scare people these days.If anyone wants this movie u can but it through ebay
Yes, it's mostly dark humor. I guess it's creepy enough to count as a light horror movie. The end is actually scary if you think about it. The thought of being trapped in an endless dream cycle, reliving it over and over again, that terrifies me. It's certainly a good horror movie for people who want to dip their toes into the genre.

WONDERFUL acting. Michael Redgrave deserved some sort of award for that performance.
Absolutely.
One of the finest and most underrated horror movies ever made.
The sign of a good horror film is that it stays with you long after you've seen it. I remember this from the age of about 9. Brilliant scene.
I saw it at the exact same age. Christmas Eve 1971. Didn't sleep very well afterwards.
ME TOO COURGETTEWITHFLIPPER..IE: TERRIFIED AS A CHILD,BUT STILL ADORE THE MOVIE!,AND GUESS I ALWAYS WILL!!
Me too! Hugo freaks me out still!
I was eight. Unforgettable.

Absolutely agree, one of creepiest horror films I have seen, especially for the year.
The first creepy doll.
When I first saw this brilliant film years ago it was Michael Redgrave"s performance that really stayed with me. He was astonishingly good in this

"Guard, quickly! He's suffocating the mannequin!"
they needed the ventriloquists dummy to bring him out his madness, without it now he's stuck lost.
Great acting and so ahead of its time with the horror .A classic. So convincing and gritty.
A superb film. Redgrave gives a masterful performance. I often used to sit near the photo of Maxwell and Hugo. It was in the Red Lion pub opposite Ealing Studios on South Ealing Road.
Best story in the whole movie! Predates "Magic" w/Anthony Hopkins by 33 years, but is every bit as scary!!
Superb compendium of stories.Michael Redgrave is outstanding.
One of the best scenes in horror cinema, ever.
My sister, 2 cousins and I used to scare each other after seeing this- "Hugo's coming!"😂
Classic ! They show this movie on TCM from time to time and it's really good. It's very subtle and understated. Also, it's more cerebral than most horror films.
They won't show it over here in the UK I don't know why?
My favourite horror film ever!
Guards! Stop him ! Quickly, he's killing Hugo !
One of the finest scenes in British cinematic history
Damn Hugo is fucking creepy! The part where Maxwell says Hello Sylvestor in Hugo's voice creeped me the fuck out! Not to mention Hugo saying Wouldn't I?
Excellent horror film and so hard to find. Not sure why. It is a masterpiece!
Classic chiller!! Last episode what a performance by Michael Redgrave!!!! Chilling

@@kristinejames9812 yeah I love this film as well! My favourite all-time Supernatural horror!! Unforgettable
It doesn't get much creepier than this!
Much copied but never bettered, genuinely creepy and the atmospheric black and white adds more to it that colour ever could
Sinister...seriously sinister.
I’ve got only seen small clips of this and it looks terrifying
This Ventriloquist's Dummy and The Haunted Mirror segments of Dead of Night, are cinematic gold.
I first saw this when I was about 8 on Appointment With Fear.
My parents found pretty disturbing which added to the effect.
Daring and impeccable film-crafting. David Lynch clearly saw this.
And Hitchcock - this scene is a clear inspiration for the final scene in Psycho.
I first saw this when I was very young, it’s always haunted my dreams as the ultimate horror.

Seriosuly
All right, settle down there Maxwell
Scared the crap out of me!
Thinking about it, was this sequence the influence for EC comics?
It has all the elements of an EC story, just a decade earlier.
Classic
...brilliant, that is....
What sort of dummy do u think I am?Funny in a way, but DEAD BRILLIANT !!
I'm still searching the whole movie. 😢
Wow! "Magic" with Anthony Hopkins was a copy!
It was inspired by this!
Hugo was in a movie 🎥 🍿 call dead 💀 of the night 6/10
Now they have a game that's called at dead of night
I'm dying to see this now. Where?
I'm also wondering where everyone's watching this movie
(3:11) Finish him.
Maxwell Frere wins, Hugo is Finished, FINISHED.
"i am not mad!"
Chocado que é um filme roteirizado por um brasileiro
Do you think that Maxwell is cute!
Faaarrrkk!

Good horror comedy, but not scary.
