I always wondered why Capcom put Akuma in this. Then I realized that Since Super Turbo is called Super Street Fighter 2 X in Japan. That means Akuma is an X-Man
The Pc version IS NOT a port of the Saturn version. It was reprogrammed from the ground up. It is also NOT missing any animation. You have to run the game in 16mb mode. The other lesser 8mb mode cuts some frames. The Pc port also has different resolution/color support modes that can be used depending on your 2d capability. Older S3 cards tend to handle the game well, as does Kyro II cards oddly enough.
Problem. Don’t know if it’s been mentioned but your talk of the DOS port is half right. What you say is true, if you install the 8MB RAM version of the game. Yeah, you get the cuts, the decrease in color palette, etc. If you install the 16MB version of the game, you get ALL the arcade animation and color reproduction intact. The DOS version was the ONLY release to get the visuals 100% barring that awful upscale to 640x480.
the saturn is the closest thing to the arcade version, thou it`s still not perfect, it`s a good option for those not willing to buy the actual acade board
I remember playing this game in a corner store in San Jose in '97, and spent a good $20 in quarters over the course of ~9 months. Once I found out that Akuma was an unlockable playable character, I unlocked him just to show my friends. He feels kind of out of place. Nice to see that it got a decent MS-DOS port in addition to the awesome Saturn version.
I bought the PAL Saturn version on release and it had those horrible borders and unoptimised 50hz gameplay. I still loved it despite that but what a rip off since the games were so expensive too. When I got my Saturn 60hz/region modded it made such a huge difference it was unbelieveable. The music in COTA is also epic, easily my favourite out of all the vs. games.
I'm still fond of the DOS version, since it it seemed to keep most if not all the arcade original's speed, and had intro/copyright/service-menu screens like if it were an arcade board. Plus, using the at-the-time-new VESA modes of new graphics cards (or the UniVBE driver the game supplied for older cards) made for a more accurate resolution AND run at 60Hz instead of the default 70. I think the demo was limited, as the full version had installs for two 8MB versions and one for for power gamers with a full 16MB of system memory.. I'll check.
Right, I remember now that one of the 8MB modes used only 256 colors for everything. I'll have to fire up my DOS machine up and see how much animation was cut out of the 8MB 32,768 color VESA mode install.
+NightSprinter Just installed the 16MB RAM/32K color version of the game into DOSBox from CD. The demo is not representative of the retail CD version, as the demo size had to be kept small so it could be downloaded over a dial-up connection, so it's probably the 8MB RAM/256 color version. Also, DOSBOX needs to have its CPU cycles set to a fixed 100,000. Leaving it at Maximize Cycles or Automated Cycles Detection will make the game run choppy.
NightSprinter Also download the patch that brings the PC version up to 1.01 Here's Acclaim's page for where the patches were located, but you;ll have to find them somewhere else: web.archive.org/web/19990417141615/www.acclaim.net/games/x-men/demo/demo.html
Are, PS2 would be a port of the Dreamcast so that would be interesting to see. The Xbox version is just emulation as is the Ios version. If I can find a cheap PS2 version and download the Xbox 360 port I'll give it a try. The original Xbox version may be an issue though unless it is backwards compatable on the 360.
Everyone's mentioned the PC ports different modes, particularly the one 16mb mode that restores all the animations and color. That alone would've made it the best port if it weren't for the fact that they messed up so many of the move properties. And the PS1 version had many of the same issues on top of it's other major setbacks considering that Probe did that one too.
As good as the Saturn port plays and looks, this game - along with the original arcade version of Dead or Alive - remains one of my favourite classics which I hoped for ages it could get a pixel-perfect re-release on some modern console/digital marketplace, and that sadly never happened. There's something about CotA - maybe the stages, the music... I can't really point that out - that not even the more powerful (and way better ported) VS games managed to equal.
+Galdelico Well, you could always play Dead or Alive in the Model 2 Emulator and X-Men COTA in Final Burn Alpha. I wouldn't bother with MAME for either of those games.
+Retro Core Sure, I tried FBA emulator back in the days and it was awesome. That said, as much as I love emulators - from a technical standpoint - there's still some psychological barrier that prevents me from fully enjoying to play games on them. I'm weird, I know. :D

Yep, true but I guess people in to fighting games don't really care about the save feature. A shame about the missing endings. I didn't know about that.

The MK port found on the CD collection is entirely different from their previous port that was released on floppy.
Yeah, it actually does. I have the game itself. Granted it doesn't make the game run like Xmen Vs. Street Fighter, as there's still load times, scaled back voices, and slowdown. And you also have to set it for 3MB mode in options, which only shows up if the cartridge is in there. But it most certainly did add animation. Not all of it, but it was no longer stripped back like the PS1 version.

The Saturn had more ram than the PS1 leading to better animation in 2D games also i think it was originally going to be a 2D only machine but vastly superior to the Megadrive. Sega got a whiff of what Sony was going to be doing with the PS1 and added extra processing power. That is why the Saturn was usually better at sprite based 2D games and the PS1 was the best or easier to program for 3D games. I had both evetually.

Thanks for your advice. X-men vs street fighter just came in the mail and I am satisfied even though I thought that the PlayStations Dpad would be OK with playing it, but I was wrong. Probably will be looking into buying a third party PlayStation controller with a Dpad similar to the Saturn's Dpad.
Yeah, say the PlayStation D-pad is awful for fighting games. There are those that say it's great but obviously they're just fan boys or know no better. See if you can get a PlayStation to Saturn pad converter. I know they make them for Dreamcast so I hope you can get one for the PlayStation. Facing that, Hori make some excellent PlayStation joysticks and pads which would be worth checking out. I use Hori sticks and pads with my PS2 because I find d Sony's pads to be horrible to use.

maybe, but in terms of sheer animation and detail this game beats all of its "sequels", multiple background layers, floor raster effects, very detailed/animated and changing stages, and full walking animations for characters such as Wolverine, Psylocke, Juggernaut, Omega Red and Sentinel whose animation had to be cut for later Marvel based games (with Spiral totally removed for later games for having too complex/detailed animation, MVC2 sprite has lots of frames missing)
Nostalgia cost. I dunno know how old you are but as a 10 year old fan of cartoon and seeing this in an arcade my mind was blown. I'm sure a lot of people my age want to own it in their homes. I have the Saturn version I pop it in every now and again to get that fix lol
Saturn was a 2D powerhouse. Unfortunately it was such in a time when eager gamers were hungry for a 3D powerhouse. I remember many Saturn ports of 3D games like Doom just being awful and choppy, compared to the PSX versions. Especially Doom! The Saturn port had none of the cool lighting effects, and felt like it ran at half the frame rate.
+Andrew Vrba +Andrew Vrba Such a time when casual gamers were board I like to think. The amount of shit companies such as Gremlin Interactive and Psygnosis churned out yet everyone though they were amazing games. Crazy Ivan, Nova Storm, Adidas Power Soccer (or whatever it was called), Assault Rigs and so one were all sub par crap yet they sold by the truck load. As for Saturn Doom, well that was programmed by idiots. Saturn Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Exhumed and even Hexen prove that the system could have done a silky smooth version of Doom. Strangely the Japanese release of Saturn Doom is smother than the western version. It's still rubbish mind you.
Retro Core I had Saturn for a while, with one of those generic Action Replay/Import player/Ram carts, once upon a time. Those carts are a must own, if you want to get the most out of the hardware.
I guess so but in all honesty I've never had the use for one but that's probably because I've I always had a memory card plugged in and only used the internal save for games that needed a ram cart of some sort. Now you've made me want to get a 4 in 1 cart :p
That Q sound logo and theme always make me feel a nice sense of nostalgia.

The Saturn version looks quite a bit darker than the others. Is that a capturing issue or an accurate representation of how it compares?
Whenever I cover a Saturn game I use real hardware via RGB. This is probably why the colour looks different

It looks great on my TV too but for some reason it is darker via the Capture. I have this problem with the Atari ST as well.
Shame, that. So you actually have an Atari ST? I always thought you captured footage of ST games via emulation.
I don't own my own but a friend has one which I use from time to time. I do also use emulation when I can't use the real hardware.

Well we're UNlucky to have gotten such an awful port.
it is quite annoying to see many episodes made with misconfigured dosbox emulator.
noop9k i cant ever get dosbox to run worth a shit got any tips?
Was just playing this on mame lol and all i have to say is.....OMEGA DESTROYERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR haha love this game.
The amount of shit companies such as Gremlin Interactive and Psygnosis
churned out yet everyone though they were amazing games. Crazy Ivan,
Nova Storm, Adidas Power Soccer (or whatever it was called), Assault
Rigs and so one were all sub par crap yet they sold by the truck load.
As for Saturn Doom, well that was programmed by idiots. Saturn Quake,
Duke Nukem 3D, Exhumed and even Hexen prove that the system could have
done a silky smooth version of Doom. Strangely the Japanese release of
Saturn Doom is smother than the western version. It's still rubbish
mind you.
Retro Core I'm guessing we have "They made the architecture too complex!" to blame for less than stellar ports of 3D titles then.

Probably
Retro Core I had Saturn for a while, with one of those generic Action Replay/Import player/Ram carts, once upon a time. Those carts are a must own, if you want to get the most out of the hardware.
I guess so but in all honesty I've never had the use for one but that's probably because I've I always had a memory card plugged in and only used the internal save for games that needed a ram cart of some sort.
Now you've made me want to get a 4 in 1 cart :p
Both Versions of this game is trash.. Saturn and Psx..
You must be joking! The Saturn port is exceptional.
