openSUSE Tumbleweed: My First Impressions

  • Since I checked out openSUSE 15.3 recently, I thought it was only fair that I also check out Tumbleweed as well. Tumbleweed is a rolling distribution that's always updated, and is a great fit for people that prefer the "install once, update forever" mentality. In this video, I'll give you guys my thoughts after checking out openSUSE Tumbleweed for the very first time.

Thanks so much for covering openSUSE. As a blind user, this is by far my favourite distro. Orca, a Linux screen reader, used to play ball with GNome, but now it’s god awful and can’t even read the activities window. Solution on most distros would be to install a new desktop environment and remove the old one with some terminal magic and hope you didn’t break something. SUSE? Pick xfce in the installer and have another coffee whilst the network installer sets up your accessible desktop environment, then when on the desktop, alt control t, sudo zypper install orca, password y. Love YaST, but wish that worked with Orca, unfortunately I have to use the command line version over SSH from my Mac with magnification, which is both incredibly useful and better than nothing even though sometimes I’d rather use the App versions.

So which combinaison of distro, Desktop and set of basic application works better for a blind user of linux. I tried xfce and orca on debian 9 and it was not very smooth.... I had to use screen magnification in many situation.

I don't know if you know about it or if it's usable for you, but you can use YAST from/in the terminal.

I still think where OpenSuSE shines most is as a server over a desktop. Things like AutoYaST, KIWI, and OBS make it really easy to customize, deploy, and maintain.

The recommended method of updating Tumbleweed is to run 'zypper dup' in a terminal as the super user

Excellent job as usual, I enjoy the good with the bad, in the real world, things don't always go smoothly, so it's good that you showed that and that it was worth it once you got past those issues. Hopefully the Devs at OpenSuse will be watching this and already have an updated installer in the works. At least one that you can pick your default style Vid drvr like either an AMD or NVidia package like I have seen others recently like PopOS. Thanks for showing all the positive, very much worth the look with the hypervisor and windows domain features, very interesting

It has really taken me a while to really understand what the heck the deal was with this distro and why so few people actually touch on it and I realized that it's not exactly meant for desktop users, the DE is kinda there as an afterthought. OpenSUSE really shines in it's unique tools that it has but those tools aren't something an average user needs and thats why I never hear much about it. Pretty cool, but it ain't for me lol

Installed Tumbleweed with KDE and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to show a GUI login screen. It boots to CLI and I can login and start KDE with startx command, but I cannot get it to use GUI login. I reinstalled because my previous Tumbleweed install (which has been upgraded from Leap) started doing the same thing, it was KDE also. Already tried installing sddm, lightdm, gdm, none will work as a login, I'm just not knowledgeable enough and never experienced this on any other distro. Fishing for some ideas or, I'm just going to nuke it and install with GNOME. I did untick autologin during setup but, I tried to turn back on after and of course, I can't because CLI only login now.

I critique to be made here about your video. When explaining acronyms of program names it would be nice that it would be explained what they mean and what function. Like KVM.
You have non Linux users exploring their options in changing OS and have no clue what these names are and function. Anyone already on linux are not so lost as anyone like me might be

Great Thanks for your honest first impressions on Tumbleweed. I tried the new openSUSE 15.3 the other day and must say that it seemed to still have quite a few basic problems, even if it is a beta it doesn't install much confidence in a distro when this happens, however I am sure it will get fixed at some point ?

    Hi Jay,
A suggested topic for a btrfs video: does it work well with full disk encryption? I've read somewhere that there either were or are issues in this area. IMO - full risk encryption should at least be an option, if not the default when installing an OS.

Gecko Linux install media may solve your Nvidia flicked issue, as it enables packman by default. Dunno if the drivers are there on the live iso. Unfortunately it uses calamares, which as far as I can tell, has no ability to properly configure btrfs. You would have to go in manually afterwards and set up sunvolumes in either the timeshift or snapper structure.

My first experience with OpenSuse Tumbleweed KDE was not great. I installed it and next day I had 2600 packages to update cause gcc10 was released and someone decided to recompile whole distro.
Installer takes long to go through. Packages likely have finer granularity and update process is slower than on Manjaro and updates are much more frequent. On the other hand OpenSuse Leap seemed perfectly fine ... well, KDE 18 is a bit outdated, but it's fine.
What I sort of miss in this review and which is somewhat important to me is philosophy and attitude towards "binary blobs" such as proprietary virtual box drivers, nvidia drivers, vivaldi browser, spotify, skype, zoom, OBS, .... video codecs .... and difficulty to install and update them. Other important feature to me is package manager, it's speed, features such as being able to see which packages were installed manually and to remove libraries with no dependencies. I think I'll stick with Manjaro, cause I havent found anything better, but I was looking for something that has KDE, that is stable and it does not break when it's not updated for year (10 years old notebook being used rarely and connected only via mobile data)

I agree the high dpi issue during the install is an annoyance, but OpenSuse is known for enterprise use and high dpi is probably not a big concern for the majority. OpenSuse can do everything well even being a powerful workstation but it does feel they provide gui environments but not a lot of focus and polish there as with other distros that focus on workstation use first.

That's strange about the small fonts, never had that problem with openSUSE. Sounds to me like a Nvidia or GNOME thing (AMD and KDE user here never had these issues). The only thing that bugs me about openSUSE is the unofficial repositories can be a mixed bag, other than that it's pretty rock solid.

Your problems come from the Nvidia driver, maybe one day GNU / linux users will learn to buy hardware that uses open drivers.
So for what my advice is, use AMD or Intel and you will have no problems, I say it from experience, my desktop was equipped with an Nvidia and after years of swearing both with Ubuntu and with any other distribution, I decided to buy an AMD, I'm not exaggerating, but all the problems are gone.
Unfortunately the installers of the various distributions have to find a method to determine which driver to use, some installers do it one way, others do it another, consequently some may have your problems with Ubuntu, others with openSUSE etc. there is no correct method.
