    Here's another important one: forgetting to take a B12 supplement and not including omega 3-rich foods like flax seed, or a handful of walnuts a day.

      Do you recommend an omega supplement?

    • @simonamckee2550
      @simonamckee2550 3 роки тому +18

      You should ask your doctor or a licensed nutritionist (I’m neither), but if you have flax seed, chia seeds walnuts and also don’t consume too much oil which has omega 6 and competes with the omega 3, then you should be ok.

      You can get your B12 from enriched foods, besides we don't need that much daily and they body is good at retaining it even though it is a water-soluble vitamin

      @simonamckee2550 3 роки тому +6

      @@nana-fb4yu That's true. Although most doctors/dieticians will tell you that it's hard to get enough if you don't eat enough foods that are processed to add B12, and they still recommend a supplement. Especially as you age and your body needs more. Although I get some B12 from my plant milk, nutritional yeast (although different brands have more or less, some none) and the fake meats, I choose to still take a supplement, just to be on the safe side.

      What we found that helps is sprouting. We have been a vegan/plant based family for nearly ten years. Some of us in our family are sensitive to beans and some grains, but using the process of soaking: beans, lentils, legumes, peas and seeds, as well as sprouting where possible, found lesser irritation due to bloating and gas.
      Sprouted quinoa and soaked buckwheat are favourites in our home with sweet spices and slightly sprouted chia seeds, as well, and black bean and pinto (a meaty type of bean) for stews and heavier meals.
      Though we have been doing this for years, the science behind it suggests that the process of sprouting results in a reduction of carbohydrates (oligosaccharides) that are not readily absorbed; can cause bloating. Sprouting is also known to lead to an increase in the manufacture of amino acids/proteins making the grain/seed more alkaline.

      I'm very sorry to say (and if anyone has any evidence to the contrary I'd be happy to see!), but there really isn't any way to make beans more "digestible" :/ It's largely based on our genetics, and the only sure way for less flatulence is to eat beans more often (so start with smaller portions, gradually add more to your diet). www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-dont-soak-dried-beans-20140911-story.html

      In my previous comment, I never made the comment of whether eating meat is or isn't healthier...so?! I was simply answering the question of someone asking what was 80/20.
      I personally am not vegan (I wear leather), but I am primarily plant-based and don't ever see myself being vegan. I watch this channel because I like the content and enjoy vegan recipes. I've been primarily plant-based for a little over 4 years, perhaps a little longer. When it comes to eating meat, if I'm craving seafood, I might have it once or twice within a month...and then I may not have it again for several months or even a year or longer...that is the only meat I eat. I simply gave the examples of people I know who aren't vegan, but want to make an effort of simply cutting down on the amount of meat they eat...these particular people were in good health and were not overweight before making the change. In other situations, I have encountered numerous people who were meat eaters who first turned pescatarians or just ate chicken and eggs...some did this for a year or two before completely becoming vegan. Everyone's relationship/journey with food is different...I'm a firm believer of doing what works for you.

    With the fruit thing, there's a huge difference between naturally occurring sugars in fruits n veggies etc vs refined processed and added sugars. Learn the difference!

    • @nyk0l3tt3
      @nyk0l3tt3 3 роки тому +9

      Um not to your body. Sugar is sugar. Eating 30g of ~*fruit*~ sugar is still 30 g of sugar. You're getting vitamins and fiber, sure, but also a sugar bombs. There's a reason diabetics have to limit their fruit intake.

    • @MsRonsch
      @MsRonsch 3 роки тому +17

      @@nyk0l3tt3 I dont know about diabetes treatment, but generally it is a difference, as far as I know, because that fiber and the secondary plant substances regulate the blood pressure, so it usually doesnt rise the same as when you eat „free“ sugar.

    • @DC-pp8xf
      @DC-pp8xf 3 роки тому +22

      @@nyk0l3tt3 30g of fruit is not 30g of sugar. First, not all fruits have the same amount of sugar. Second, fruit is not 100% sugar. Third, the body breaks down refined sugar rapidly, causing insulin and blood sugar levels to skyrocket. Because refined sugar is digested quickly, you don’t feel full after you’re done eating, no matter how many calories you consumed. The fiber in fruit slows down metabolism, as fruit in the gut expands to make you feel full. Thus you eat less of it.

    • @sersastark
      @sersastark 3 роки тому +2

      @Erin you're severely missguided on this. Processed and refined sugars aren't absorbed by the body in the same way as fruits and vegetables. One causes insulin and blood pressure to spike, leading to diabetes, while the other does not bc it's mixed in with fibre and other essential vitamins. What DC and MsRonsch said is correct.

      You can do alright on lots of fruit - however, it's better to choose more veggies and leafy greens as they will provide you a wider range of vitamins and minerals. Although the sugar in fruit does effect the body differently to processed sugar, it will still feed the bad bacteria in your stomachs which can lead to gut damage. It's all about balance. Fruit should definitely not be shamed but you can choose to have fuller, vegetable rich and more nourishing meals instead for more of the meals than not so that you're not only eating large quantities of fruit because of ease of access.

    Hey, thank you for this. I initially thought it was going to be a bit preachy, but then it actually inspired me to change up how I meal-prep. Been vegan for a couple of years, but work and general life stress have caused me to go for the easy pasta options too often when I used to make beautiful nutritious bowls of food even in my pre-vegan days. Going back to that now with more lentils and more roasted veggies. I think I just needed to see someone do this and re-think how it can work with meal-prep that isn't too much effort either. So I thank you for the inspiration! :)

    I love the tips on incorporating greens! I love them! I’m a volume eater and adding greens to my meals helps me get more food in a healthy way :) I personally like to add a bed of greens or salad to the bottom of a lot of savory dishes I make, for example stir fry, and I also like adding greens to things like pasta sauces. Especially with things like pesto, the greens add a vibrant color and nutrients!

    I think your advice is spot-on. I generally spend Saturday afternoon doing meal prep for the week. Sure, it's work on the front end but it makes life easier during the week. Then all I need to do is grab what I want. If I run out mid-week, then I do some more prepping. Once you get in the rhythm of doing it, it's just part of your life. I haven't tried an air fryer, sounds interesting. Thanks for your videos

    I’m half Puerto Rican and was raised vegetarian as a child. I have been eating beans all my life. I recently became Vegan and am now eating a lot more black, red, and garbanzo beans. My kids are making fun of me because I’m farting like crazy! I thought I’d be used to eating beans but I’m so gassy now lol.
    BTW - yes, try to stay away from processed foods, just ‘cause something says vegan, it’s still PROCESSED!
    Thanks for your videos and awesome vibe:)

    I menu plan, but not so much the meal prep. Watching this made me realize I sometimes leave out the veg (or don't make all I planned) because I can't be arsed to clean and chop it when it's dinnertime. Inspired to change that!

    Great video Jennae. I'm 18 months in and I haven't mistressed the meal prep yet. Also, having the salad is important. Smoothies are okay if you can't do it otherwise, but vegan docs say it's better for our microbiome if the greens are not pulverised in a blender. It's 9.25 pm and I just finished dinner - way too late - but I also opened up 2 pomegranates and put all the fruit in a jar ready to eat in the fridge. That's what I must do more of.

    Thank you for posting this UA-cam segment. I am a new vegan (August 2020) and I have been struggling a little bit. I am glad you posted information about soy because that is a HUGE controversy and there are so many things that can be made with tofu and tempeh. Tempeh I am still working on, it is definitely a required taste. The last I used it I processed it to make taco meat with walnuts and that came out good. Didn't like the tempeh bacon though. Thanks again.
