Nicely done. Rather macabre, but I suppose you can't argue with success.

Come from 6th generation of beef cattle Farmers what my dad used to do with these the poor molasses on the calf's back or some salt in the mother would lick and lick till it was clean and then can be convinced that it was hers

I grew up on a ranch in Texas. I come from five generations of Texas ranchers. We obviously raised cattle as well. I have never heard of this method. At first I was a bit taken aback by your method but quickly realized what y’all were attempting to accomplish. The mother will smell her baby on the new one and even though there’s the blood on the new baby that’s typical of a birth anyways. I was worried about predators though going for the calf so I am glad y’all monitored the situation and only did it long enough for the two to bond. The best thing for that calf is to be raised by a cow that will treat it as it’s own rather than just be hand reared and separated from the herd during those crucial first few months. I know city folk may not understand your method but I do think it was worth a shot! Where did y’all learn this method from and how much success have y’all had with it?

We learned this from a shade tree vet in our small town in about 1988! This has been about 90% effective with cows who have calved before and are accepting of calves. This works best within 12 hours of the birth of the original calf. We have another video up of a second one we did this year. We did 5 this spring total and they were all successful. Luckily, the predators are not a major problem in this area!

@@popefamilyfarms3361 thanks for the info! If that situation ever presents itself, we will try it. We just have to watch the herd closely though because we do have mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats, and even hawks that prey on our calves and other baby animals. That is a very high success rate! Great job!

Wow! Lots of predators for sure. We have all of those here except the mountain lions but luckily they don’t give us trouble. Occasionally the coyotes get aggressive, but nothing too significant! Perhaps placing the carcass of the other calf in another location to distract the predators for the few hours the hide is attached would work! Good luck to you if you are able to try it one day. We’d love to hear if it’s successful, if you do. We appreciate the feedback on our video too!

A bit gross but very interesting.

Gross yes but anything to get a calf to nurse off a cow is worth it. A better quality of milk to anything you can buy. Dead calfs juices on head and butt also would help. Bottle feeding time and money consuming totally. Bottle feed usually not as healthy😊

I don't get how farmers do shit like this, branding and grafting and go to sleep at night with no remorse. Quite psychotic. If that's not enough they teach this shit to their kids too, same goes for hunters.

You are aware that we didn’t kill the calf just to skin it and make its mother take a new baby, right? It seems like you forgot to actually watch the educational video. I also don’t recall branding this newborn calf. The calf that was skinned was stillborn, as is very common with people too & not frowned upon nor considered “psychotic”. The white calf was a twin and its mother was unable to feed it and its sibling at the same time. The stillborn’s mother wanted a baby so we gave it one that was orphaned. So psychotic of us. We should’ve let it die in the field of starvation and showed our children neglect instead of proper animal husbandry. Next time we need advice on how to farm in a less heinous fashion, we’ll hit you up for your expert opinion since we’re obviously doing it incorrectly. Oh, and lastly, we don’t sleep at night, we’re too busy hunting with our kids. ;)

You forgot up alnight helping calves be born, bottlefeeding, doing some vet work so they wont die of disease etc. Days without sleep worrying about them too

Abhorrent, vile. No words to describe the lengths animal agriculture will go to make a dollar.

You’re so right! We should have left the orphaned calf to die of starvation (as it would have if it were born a rejected twin in the wild). It’s a shame we were here to prevent a slow and torturous death.

@@popefamilyfarms3361 Nobody martyrs themselves quite like farmers. You shouldn't be breeding these animals in the first place just to exploit. 👍🏻
