    That was a great interview with Max Weinberg.
    So I have this great big gigantic 25,000 pound diesel box truck, recording studio control room on wheels. And early on, in our existence together. I got this Christmas gig. To record. At the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Cool. Awesome!
    So we were still setting up all day for this show. And I was having technical problems with my audio console. When I hear this voice from behind me say... "you've got a really nice facility here." And when I turned around it was Max Weinberg.
    He also plays with a full front skin and no hole, in the front of his bass drum. And he prefers a Beyer M-88 microphone in front of his bass drum. I told him I didn't have an, M-88. But I had the M-69. Which was the little brother to the M-88. And he was happy with that compromise. So was I. It's a microphone I didn't frequently use on the bass drum. I still don't. But to each their own. And I am there to aim to please.
    It was a great, spectacular, stellar show. And the only show. I couldn't even keep the archive for myself of. And I think about that show often. It was awesome. And not quite 30 years ago. But close. In fact it may have been my first winter of operation in December 1991. Yeah. And no archive to remember it by. Damn.
    Needless to say he is a charming, well mannered, Mensch. So quiet and humble. Not your typical rock star. But your typical best friend. And my honor to have recorded the great Max Weinberg. And I've never heard the playback. I heard it while I was recording it. That one and only time. And there was a complete video crew and shoot with the hat. Of which I had a feed. And gave them a feed. And a 24 track master. And that was the last I ever heard of it. Boo-hoo. I did a great job engineering.
    I would love to Max things out

    What drummer cannot in some way relate to this guy? Starting at an early age...the hunger for your first kit...seeing Ringo on Ed Sullivan...being inspired... dreaming. He gets it too: MAKE YOUR FELLOW MUSICIANS SOUND GOOD. That's three quarters of the battle right there. He's so relatable, so down to Earth and so worthy of all his successes. And eloquent. I would love it if Max had a radio show or podcast. I could listen to him for hours.

    I remember I saw Max speak at my Almamater SUNY Oneonta. A moving speech about touring with Springsteen in India while feeling guilty about the third world poverty outside his Five Star Hotel Window. And urging for a more empathetic planet. Like what we're building now. Nothing on drums - which I came for. Thinking it might be a clinic. But Max was still great. And this was in 1987 way before Conan. I got his autograph at the podium and (having read in Modern Drummer), asked him if he was recovering well from carpel tunnel surgery. Taken aback, he said "Yes I have!". Then later on Conan he proved he was right.

    A thing I find interesting, as a fellow drummer, was from a modern drummer interview way back, when he spoke of how Bruce made remarks about his time keeping and gave him a kinda warning. He set about really woodsheding with a metronome until he ironed it out. Many would I feel become disheartened (I did!) but he just set about making everything work at the highest level.

    I developed my wrist strength on my bed as a kid, too....🥁🐒 I remember Kent drums as kid, my bud had a set of Kents - it was a rite of passage like having a Harmony or Silvertone guitar before you got a "real" one. I became a guitar player because like Max my 'rents couldn't justify a whole set so I switched to guns - a guitar where at least it's all there even if it's a beast - you have all the elements there to learn on. 🥁

    Terrific interview Joe! I am not familiar with Max as a drummer. However, he must be a great player to wind up playing with the E-Street Band & on Conan's show. Although everyone is entitled to their opinions, it's too bad that a few of the comments below were negative comments about Max & his drumming. I have to wonder about how good they are at drumming? Enough said....... Thanks for your videos Joe......👍👍

    I forgot to say that Max says that growing up in the suburbs of Newark was “isolating.” The truth is that he grew up in Maplewood, NJ which is and was an affluent cosmopolitan and culturally diverse community. Maplewood is a 15 minute train ride from NYC. Plus, his father was a prosperous attorney.

    Good post, MHF. Ole Max never needs a 12 piece set. The man, like DJ always "planted that beat." The man still honors the early masters.
    FYI, string players have lousy rhythm. That's why as a violinist I learned to play drums when I was young. Those youth orchestras were a fiasco at times. Even my first conductor, Rubinstein would cuss us out! :^) Ah, the good old days.

    • @shaunw9270
      @shaunw9270 4 роки тому

      That's interesting you say that about string musicians. Is there a difference in say , the sense of rhythm from a violinist schooled in Classical music and a fiddler from a Country & Western background ?

    As Conan found out Max Weinberg was a complete and total douche bag. Let me take things one at a time: 1) Max was a robotic turd on drums; 2) Bruce can’t sing and only screams. He also can’t play guitar even as well as a 60’s garage band player; 3) Max was a stiff on the Conan show and added nothing to the show; 4) Max says he left drumming for 3 years. What he is obviously ashamed of saying is that his father pushed him to go to law school. Max did so and graduated. That took 3 years. I never liked his playing and I hope he’ll stay away by playing for Bar Mitzvahs.
