this might well be the funniest movie of all time, i almost died laughing when i first watched it 45 years ago, my kids loved it 25 years later, and i still get belly aches when i watch it nowadays, simply a masterpiece by the best director of comedies ever, blake edwards, genius…
I saw this the Great Race in the theater many years ago. Such a classic and clean comedy. They even updated the pie fight very well. "Push the button Max!" such a great film line. Peter Falk, Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and company were brilliant. I wish they would do some good natured, slapstick like this again.
Sadly, studio executives don't want to do slapstick for a couple of reasons. One: It's dangerous. Two: They don't think the audience wants this type of humor. There are more reasons, but ultimately, the studios see us, the audience, as wallets with legs and believe that foul-mouthed jokes from equally foul people who are confused as comics are the way to go. Sad, really.
@@greencello599 And yet, the Sonic movies are successful because of Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the same way Jack Lemon did with prof. Fate. People, especially kids, understand and want slapstick. It's the millennial generation the one without a sense of humor (and I know because I'm one of them).
Hilarious film with a terrific cast of actors and actresses ! Seeing this clip, I noticed that when Max lit the rocket to start, the sound was identical to the old Batman TV series Batmobile starting 😳 up ! I've never noticed it before, and I've seen this movie about 12 times !
The guy builds a rocket, a pedal-power blimp, and a boat with a homing torpedo. Also he built a tricked-out car. This guy could have been a weapons manufacturer and an arms dealer.
0:55 Movie Fun Fact: The Rocket car was actually powered by a small car motor (VW or Corvair) and was self propelled. When this was filmed, the idea was the rockets would ignite and Falk or Lemmon would simply step on the accelerator and drive off just like a car. However, Blake Edward decided not to tell the extras just *how large* a pyrotechnics load was mounted in the rear of that thing, actually he might not have realized it himself, so when Max lights the fuse, what you see is genuine SHOCK and TERROR reactions on the faces of the extras. PS 1:15 my absolute favorite scene of this entire movie XD
That is a great story! I love how people recoil when the damn thing goes off. Maybe a little sketchy on set safety. But the reaction is priceless! One of my all time favorite films! And the cast is amazing! Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn, Ross Martin, and even long time character actor Larry Storch. Ross Martin has a great scene where he fences with Tony Curtis. And as Ross Martin was a stage swordmaster he coordinated the stunts and sword play in the scene. Interesting dude! Didn't know about the motor in the rocket car. Cool info! Sometimes I think a director can get a little more out of his cast by keeping things secret. When the original Alien chest bursting scene took place, Ridley Scott, the crew, and actor John Hurt were the only people who knew. The cast's reactions as they are around Hurt are essentially real in that they were not expecting a damn alien thing to come out of a guy's chest. Yikes!
I assume the camera is undercranking to get the approach shot and the reverse of it going downrange. The '66 Batman TV show had the same circle of fire effect at the rear if I recall...
Klunker......1:15 IS the best scene.....perfect cinematography. Jack Lemmon's performance throughout the movie is priceless. Peter Falk isn't to far behind.
Yes I always wondering about that, how the crowd jumps back like they really were scared - turns out they were. I hope that guy on horseback at far-right was okay.
The farmer in that scene was my grandfather. He was a property master at Warner Bros till he retired in 1971. Worked with all the old time great actors.
@@rydercartoonanimations No unfortunately he passed in 2000 at the age of 94. Left me with a lot of great stories of working with those classic actors tho.
I guess Professor fate didn't realize that he created rocker Propel flight even though it was a short event he may have stumbled onto something profound. Not to mention breaking a speed record for that time in the early 1900s Well done Professor fate
1965 -- Both Lee Marvin an Jack Lemmon had dual roles, Marvin in "Cat Ballou" and Lemmon for this. Marvin won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but I think they should have shared it. Classic performances by both of them.
I just realized two of my favorite comedies of all time came out the same year; and it's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World only two years before this. The early '60s was a great time for movie comedies!
When the rocket starts up. It has a 1960s batmobile type of sound. I kind of think the sound guy for this movie did sounds for the original Batman TV show.
Apart from the extremely funny scenes of Prof. Fate, I consider him a genius and very courageous, not a coward. He does not only try to sabotage Leslie, but also does his own experiments, inventions and breathtaking stunts outside of the automobile race. Just think of his rocket sled shown in this scene. He tries to break the speed world record over one mile (1609 meters) in only 12 seconds. Despite he takes off unvoluntarily, he gets really fast. I have calculated the numbers using the physics formulae for acceleration and got that in order to achieve his goal, he must have an acceleration of 22.35 m/sec (2.278 g) and after 12 seconds reach 965 km/h. This speed was first reached in WW 2 by e.g. the Messerschmitt Me 163 rocket interceptor and (sometimes in sink flight) by the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter.
You know, if they put extra weight on that rocket they might've succeeded on staying on the track! But if they had any more fuel, they might've reached a good distance to the stratosphere!
The Great Race airs Wed morning (12:35am CT, Oct. 12, 2022) on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Prior to it at 7pm (CT), "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" (1965), then at 9:30pm (CT) is the funniest film I've ever seen: "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963). Followed by The Great Race at 12:30am. At 3:30am (CT) is "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) starring Jack Lemmon and his great friend Walter Matthau.
I love this scene of this very funny movie. Love to know if there is some behind the scene when they have to go in mud! or some bloopers! How many times they have to repeat the scene and have to go in mud?
And theoretically if that thing could burn enough fuel without actually running out of fuel, that thing would constantly keep accelerating and going out into deep orbit, and eventually into space.
My grandfather was the farmer in that scene and a property master at Warner Bros until he retired in 1971. He told me they were completely caught off guard when that rocket lit up. Totally startled them.
Why oh why didn’t they make a sequel back in the the day surely there was enough interest and loads of gags and destinations untouched , great movie then and still funny now . Who they could cast and who would direct I have no idea
I can't express how much I love this movie.
Professor Fate's,
auto-mo-bile.
and Max.
I as well !!! Have to watch it a few times a year.. me and my grandmother would watch it every year..
Same here. Henry Mancini's score is also one of my favorites.
I haven't seen it since I was a little kid, but am going to re-watch it. I thought it was hilarious.
One thing this movie has that adds to the hilarity is the use of WB cartoon sound effects. An unbeatable combination.
Well, it is a WB movie, and Fate is essentially Wile E Coyote.
I do recognise sound effects from the Road Runner, in fact I recognised them even when I first saw this film when I was nine years old.
@@michaelminch5490 Yes, that's true. The similarity is that they are pursuing an unattainable goal.

This is my childhood right here ... one of my all time favourites
Me too this scene is right out of the Road Runner and Coyote Looney Toons I was lucky my parents took me to see this new at the cinema in 1965.
2:06 I love the running gag that apparently the professor has crashed into this guy’s farm so much that he isn’t really phased.
"oh look, here he comes again."
Fate's face when they start laughing at him!😂 One of my all time favorite movies.
I remember watching this in the picture theatres, and I always loved "Push the Button, Max!"... classic...
MAAAAAX!
Picture theaters? Fossil
This movie was brilliant, and the pie fight? Quite possibly the best in film history.
My sister once had a VCR that could rewind at normal speed. The pie fight is 10 times funnier backwards.
pure GOLD. gem of Hollywood.
Wile E. Coyote would be proud. Nice touch showing a railroad bridge in the rear projection - shows how it got airborne.
Interesting point, but why would the bridge get the Rocket car airborne?
The bridge if you look closely at the shadow of it, has an elevated ramp.
Exactly! Still one of my favorite films. I've made that connection with Wile E Coyote as well. The first 30 minutes is exactly that. Priceless film!
@@RatBatSpiderCrab That's the dumbest thing I've heard today and we're
I wish they would put this in the theater. Would love to see this on the big screen. Maybe some day they will be with one of their anniversary dates?
It was released on July 1, 1965 so in a few months it will be out for 60 years.
Jack Lemmon's scenery-chewing in this film is the stuff of legend. He has rarely been better.
In my humble opinion, this is one of the best movies of all time. I saw it for the 1st time on Boxing Day 1976, and every boxing day since.
The music sets the mood for Fate's ultimate failure. Funny how much the rocket sounds like the Batmobile.
I was born in 1962 and I thought I was the only one who appreciated this move, via NBC Sunday Night At The Movies on TV.
Professor Fate ROCKS!!!
One of my favorite movies n probably the greatest comic movies of all time...with most iconic line
Push the button Max
I love Jack Lemmon's cackle of triumph as must as I love his shriek of despair when it all goes wrong...
