    In regards to thread, it is important to know which orientation the spool needs to be in. The new machines have horizontal thread pins and work best with cross wound thread spools. Machines with upright spool pins work best with regular spool where the thread is wound like a bobbin and stacked. My modern machine had all sorts of problems with traditional spool thread until I changed the orientation. The machine was completely fine with the thread once it was in the correct orientation for the thread. The horizontal orientation puts a extra twist in the thread. Some machines do care, but others just don't.

    I have found that stitching on a tightly woven fabric like a Batik or a Kona cotton, my favorite needle is Schmetz Microtex 8/12. It is sometimes called a "sharp" on the packaging. Also, when using a metallic thread, you must use a metallic needle. Thanks for your tips!!

    This is such great information! I have been looking for this kind of specific information for forever!! It would be great if you could go into more detail like this with things like fabric types, weights, techniques (hems, seams, bias sewing) best used on certain fabrics, threads, needles, projects, etc., as well. Perhaps detailed series... That would be so helpful. I already feel more confident because of you. Thanks, Melanie!!!

    Goodness, I only changed my needle twice and I sewed on my machine for 20 years. Imagine my surprise when my quilt partner asked did I clean the ridges under the foot? I said what ridges? Hahaha and she pulled out a nat of dust. Hung my head in shame hahaha so now clean after each project and new needle before I start new one. Hope you all have a good laugh at this xxx

      It's ideal to also oil your machine every so many bobbins. If your machines has a larger than normal bobbin like a Bernina :) then you want to oil it after every bobbin.

    Are all sewing needles the same length? I have a brothers and needed a needle due to one that broke. I went to my local store which is small and only had singer needles and for some reason it does not seem to catch the bobbin thread. I had to pull the needle down till its almost out of the machine.

    I purchased new "Singer" needles (made in Brazil) needles for my Featherweight 221 and they have the "cut out" on the left side of the needle that supposedly is there to prevent skipped stitches, however, all I get are skipped stitches it literally will not sew with this needle. I put a round type needle in and it sews fine! Is this normal?

    • @RenaissancePeopleNYC
      @RenaissancePeopleNYC 5 років тому +1

      Well, I apologize for bothering you with this "problem". I am completely embarrassed! It was only a case of me being "stunada" (as we say in Italian LOL) and being a dummy. When this problem cropped up, I had been working on this machine for around 8 hours already and it was like 6 AM in the morning. I should have quit and checked everything again today. I was WAY overtired.
      So I took the machine to a friend of mine who is VERY knowledgeable with sewing machines and is a fabric expert. I had him install a new needle (WITH the "scarf" cutout) and the machine sewed perfectly! Right there I knew I screwed up.
      But WHERE!!??
      So I pulled out needle MYSELF and installed yet another new needle with the cutout. And the machine started skipping stitches! During all of this my friend is sitting next to me with HIS featherweight sewing with one of my new needles and NO PROBLEM!
      So I looked at my threading and thought it looked kinda odd - So I got up a looked at his threading, then looked and mine, and like a JERK I realized I had missed the last thread notch AT the needle! What is amazing is that the machine actually stitched a little like this so it was driving me nuts.
      And what is even MORE amazing is that when I was doing this at home and switched back to the original round needle I somehow managed to thread it properly LOL!!! Talk about Murphy's Law?
      So now I know the reason - it was ME. So I again APOLOGIZE for being a goofball and all I can say is "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa"!
      Well, at least I know the machine is perfect now because I checked everything including the timing and of course found it all to be perfect. UGH!

    Girl if I changed my needles for every project, I would legit change them 20 times a day or even if I counted the day as a project literally changing it daily. That is totally not sustainable.

    What needle would you use for using Minky fabric

    • @MelanieHam
      @MelanieHam  7 років тому +2

      Minky is actually a knit, so if you are only using minky then a ball point needle is good. Generally people are sewing minky with woven fabrics as well, so it that case a universal needle is best and what I personally do ;) I would use a 90/14 needle for minky projects ;)

    Thx for making this♥☻1 however I don't think your title of your video is fitting for this video. hahah lol
    I was watching this because I wanted someone to explain to me something like " a 90/14" size needle means it's for a 90 weigh thread and it the needle diameter is 14mm " something to that effect. That would explain to me WHAT needle sizes mean.
    The information included in this video didn't give me any insight to understanding how to read sizes nor what the numbers of the size actually represents. Instead if I were to follow the instructions of the video I wouldn't necesarily understand what Needle SIZE to choose for what weight thread. Instead I would just take away from the video, " ok she said every day sewing is 90/14 or 80/12.... why is THAT? I have no idea that's what the video said. She also said thread is breaking MAYBE try a titanium needle... WHY? I don't know it's just what the lady said.The info in this didn't teach me what the sizes meant, nor did it help me "think for myself"or gave me the information for me to determine what size is for what thread, meaning, if I ACTUALLY understand what the numbers mean in the size and can probably determine," ok this fabric is super thick so I would probably need a size (blah and blah) and the thread is a 12 wt so the diameter of the needle would need to be at least ( blah blah ) width. which means I need a needle size larger than (blah blah)"
    ua-cam.com/video/L7VY4ZXigCA/v-deo.html
    The title of your video would be alot more appropriate for the video above. Which actually explained what the sizes meant and provided a visual number of it to help the viewer concentrate and follow what is said instead of having the camera aimed at the host face the entire time, since, their face is irrelevant to the subject at hand and it distracts and makes it harder for the audience to follow the subject at hand. haha lol
    Regardless thank you for making this, perhaps you can take my comment into consideration.☻☺♥ Have a lovely day☻☺!
