Living in Mexico, renting from an AMERICAN with a house there, locals told me he charged them HALF what he got from Americans, including me.

the first one isn't a scam, it's just people not reading up on a culture first

Doesn't matter if it's a cultural difference. This kind of behaviour would be illegal in many European countries cuz it is literally a scam by definition.

@@pwk50I beg to differ, restaurants are there to serve & sell you food and people get impatient when they don’t get there food quickly, so to quiet the masses these Appetizers (yes, Appetizers you pay for!) are a CHOICE…I adamantly disagree with this being a scam! It’s only a couple of euros! If you get offended, it’s a YOU problem!

@@thesixt.o.7568 it's literally tricking ppl into paying for something they didn't know costs money and praying on cultural differences = literally a scam. In MANY countries/restaurants u receive appetizers for free and u are INFORMED by the waiters that it is free. So your argument for it not being a scam is that it's "just a couple euros"? A scam is a scam, doesn't matter for how much money someone was scammed. Also the argument that ppl get impatient.. What ppl? All the ppl? U are able to speak for every single person? It's common sense that when u go to a restaurant u don't get your food immediately. If you still want to get an appetizer, you just order it and then u are fully aware what u get and what u pay for. In Portugal that doesn't happen cuz they put an appetizer on your table without telling you what it is exactly and which position in the menu it is. And btw. If u reject it, the restaurant is legally required to throw it into trash making it not only a scam, but a manipulation on top of it, cuz most ppl will feel bad about wasting food.
Don't get me wrong, there's many cool things about Portugal, but that one is just pure garbage behaviour.

The first one is not just for foreigners or tourists. Its always been like this on restaurants for everyone. Its part of the culture.

@@Lisbobexpatsassistant You don't like this way. I for instance don't like the tipping method used in other countries. You don't have to pay the employee.

Hi LisBob! Good video, I don't agree that these are all "scams" but cultural differences. The biggest scam that annoys me in Lisbon is the amount of people selling cheap sunglasses. My hubs and I were having an afternoon beverage at outdoor dining at Bastardo last weekend and were accosted at least 4 times by these people! Both of us were wearing sunglasses!😎

The first is NOT a scam. It is sad you are showing this as a scam as it shows you don't really know it's based on the culture: don't allow your guests to go hungry. Plus the menu always shows that these items are 'couvert"

    • @Lisbobexpatsassistant

Let's agree to disagree: the whole world is saying that this way to proceed is at least dishonest... But no, it's the foreigners who are stupid if they don't read the menu?
      I don't like people saying it's foreigners' fault... :/

@@Lisbobexpatsassistantthe whole world, lol! Talk about a biased generalization. First and foremost Portugal 🇵🇹 is not your responsibility to atone for, how arrogant to believe this is a scam! If you feel that you were “scammed”, then it shows your pettiness.
