  • I have read another eerie tale, this time an unfairly neglected late work by the master of the modern ghost story M.R. James.
In the time of Queen Anne, two clerical scholars at Cambridge venture onto the fens by night, hoping to obtain the key to secret diabolical powers from the burial place of a recently executed witch... and receive a terrible lesson in the dark graveyard.

When I discovered M.R.James I worked at a large bookstore, and it was such an honor to be able to introduce people to his collections.

    M. R. James is one of my favourite writers, I have read and re read his ghost stories many times over. Two of my particular favourites are 'An Episode of Cathedral History' and 'The Mezzotint'. I would recommend Michelle Paver 'Dark Matter' and 'Thin Air' to any readers who enjoy James.

Valuable enrichment of James's work & testament to his improvement over the years. Your narration is quite excellent. Gratitude.

Thank you, great narration. I love M R James stories. I think I have been fascinated with them since I saw a BBC adaptation of Lost Hearts when I was quite young and it scared the heck out of me! One of my favourites is The Experiment, which seems to be one of his lesser known ones.

The main reason this story was not that popular was it was first published many years after M. R. James death in 1990. It was found among his long forgotten manuscripts, probably, James was not quite satisfied with the first draft and it was not meant to be published. This story was alluded to in his essay 'Stories that I have tried to write.'
