The CC is a utility biker’s wet dream, not only does it have v brakes, QR and external cables for easier at home maintenance, but it’s got so many mounts for racks and cages, and generous tire clearance AND it’s a cromo frame. It’s my dream bike!

“But there’s only 4 of us…!”🤣🤣🤣. It’s a gift to be able to retire at the top…in whatever endeavor. AND never underestimate the value of a podium finish! Thanks for a great start to the week!!

The CC has to be one of the most popular messenger bikes out there. In the city (Chicago) I see lots of folks riding them as everyday bikes too. Solid platform to make your own.

Just watching your videos on the CC now as I've found one on Craigslist fitted with drops that I'm hoping to pick up this afternoon!

I've had my cross check for almost 7 years now and I still love it. I used it to cycle across the state of missouri on the Katy Trail between Kansas City and St. Louis along the missouri river a few years back. Was a great ride and I even had it loaded up with about 25 lbs of gear.

I still have mine from 2003. And am beating the Katy and nearby roads around Columbia.

😂best story ever! Lol! I do love me some cross check. Remember the pre pandemic days when you could get that bike in at least 4 colors?
I wish I would’ve got either the sage green, mustard yellow or robins egg blue. Great info about the stack and top tube length. I’m basically a Caucasian T-Rex. This plays huge factors in my bike choices.

Mine won an unofficial age group national title in the fledgling New Zealand national cyclocross champs, completed a 430km one day road race as a singlespeed, got my fastest ever time in a 100km gravel event I’ve done 12+ times and has done a ton of commuting, even to the bar and back tonight! Wanted one for at least 5 years before I bought one and it still rules after a decade of riding it. Legendary bike, thanks for the reminder!

I ride one as my "work bike" but I've also raced it in tracklocross, real cross, and alley cats. It's the do it everything frame set

Some friends ours son commuted by Cross Check for years. He & another young guy got it into their heads to tour the Andes. After to tour, he said the bike was a bit light for that type of adventure but it performed well & survived just fine. I was a bit amazed but as you point out, it's also an adventure bike.

Great timing on this one. I currently ride a CC, but I'd really like to get something more upright and comfortable. I've been considering the Bridge Club, Ghost Grappler, and Gorilla Monsoon. Was wondering what you thought about them, or if you had a favorite. I also have a chromoly Peeper stem headed my way in the mail right now, perhaps one of these would make a better host for it than the others?

    • @ThePsychicDerailleur
      @ThePsychicDerailleur  2 роки тому

The Monsoon is going to be the closest to what you currently have. If you want something more upright; of the 3 Bridge Club is going to get you there easiest. Can’t say much about the GG as I haven’t ridden one. Have you considered the Hardtack?

I really like the Hardtack too, but it seems a lot harder to find. Honestly having a hard time finding any of them, I think there's a GG in my size I saw somewhere but that's about it. Anyways thanks for the response, really love your channel and hopefully I'll be able to make my next purchase through you!

My one and only road race was a similar experience for me. I just did it for the experience and wasn't serious about the race. There were probably a dozen or so riders in my age group and most of them were out of sight in front of me on the first lap(each lap was several miles). I gradually caught and passed most of them because I've always been as fast/faster at the end of the ride than at the start, where it was the opposite for most of my competitors. I'm not sure where I ended up, but very well could have been 3rd place, or maybe even second. It was a confusing race, with several divisions and some pretty high-category racers, so I just left.

Another great thing about the cross check is that rear spacing. 132.5 so you can run either a 130 or 135mm rear hub. That versatility really lends itself to the parts bin build.

Heh... Got two Cross Checks; so, I'm covered. But, in their FAQs, Surly's answer to the question whether the Cross Check was cancelled was a not terribly comforting: No, not currently.

I would say the first adventure cross type bicycle frames, with 700c wheels, were the early 90's hybrids; most of them share similar geometry to the Surly CC and were even able to fit 42mm tires. So in retrospect, the Surly CC is, for the most part, just a" modern" early 90's hybrid.

Most of the older Surly frames where great all-rounder bikes. I love my 2011 KM with its 1/18" headset, rim-brake or disc-brake mounts. The newer ones are just fashion items in my opinion, with 44mm head-tubes and disc-only brake mounts. It is more and more difficult to build "part-bins" bikes using the newer Surly frames. I'll also refer to your other video ua-cam.com/video/_sYupwauRhE/v-deo.htmlsi=hYBkPbbaRg5_Y7sC and agree with you 100%. It's getting more and more difficult to make a Surly "Your own"!
