Jim actually wrote this for his new born son, whom was less than 2 years old when Jim died in the plane crash. I vividly remember when Jim died. He was my favorite solo artist at the time, and frankly still is to this day. He created the most beautiful music. Very sad.
@@denicesanders4586 Seeing AJ Croce was my last concert pre-COVID. He did a mix of his own stuff and his father's songs and it was just as fantastic as you imagine it would be.
Croce wrote it for his infant son. He realised that he was often far away from home touring and feeling homesick, and wanted to spent more time with his family. And yep who knows, he may have had some premonition of his passing. He has more great songs: I Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Operator, Lover’s Cross, I’ve Got A Name, New York’s Not My Home, Working At The Carwash Blues, and more.
You beat me to it..was just about to say that..i think its so sad that he wrote this wonderful song for his song about wanting for time to stand still so he can spend more time with him..then he goes and dies way way too young..such a talent..such a loss..Rip
When I got married in 1973, I played Cat Stevens, "How Can I Tell You" as the bridal march. I'm glad I was a young rebel, unconventional but not afraid to be expressive. 🤓
Harri, you'll love his "I've Got A Name", "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song". Props to Maury Muehleisen, who was often by his side on guitar and vocals
To that list above. I'd add Operator. Sometimes the most.popular songs do not fully reveal the depth of talent. His death when I was thirteen hit us nearly as hard as anyone recording at that time.
I could have sworn I met Maury on the Parkway School Playground basketball court in my younger years growing up-he lived just down the road on Hermitage Ave in Trenton NJ-he was AMAZING and is buried in St Marys Cemetary where my family plot is ! WILL NEVER FORGET HIS WONDERFUL TALENT !
This song is more representative of Jim's brilliant work. There's nothing sadder than hearing an artist of this caliber who was taken from us so young singing about their limited time to do things. The news of his death was shocking and heartbreaking at the time. He had reached a peak and who knows how much further he could have gone. Check out "I Got a Name" or "Operator" next.
We heard of his death the morning after he was killed (9-20-73). We were carpooling to high school listening to the radio. I remember exactly where on the interstate we were when they announced it. My friend and I cried all the way to school. R.I.P. Jim
It was such a tragedy when Jim passed-away from a plane crash in 1973. I was just a kid when it happened, but can remember it so well because I liked his music even then. Thanks for posting this fantastic song, Harri!
Tom Petty passing still crushes me…was 66, but was still making such awesome music….got better with age….and he wrote nothing but hits…his albums from 2008 and on may be his finest work…pure blues/rock n roll. So damn good.
You got his last name right! This was my wedding song. We've been together for almost 20 years now. We found each other late in life, but later bettet than never 👍
" I've Got a Name " is an empowering song for all ages and I have to shout out to his playing partner Maury Muehleisen who also died in the plane crash his guitar accompaniment to Jim's songs were spot on! Rip gentleman we still enjoy your music 🙏✌️♥️
Gorgeous song! Jim was at the height of his fame when he died. It was tragic. You MUST react to "I Got A Name," which is an amazing, inspiring song, along with "Operator" and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song," all songs by Jim Croce, sounds like Crow Chee, that are terrific hits. Peace.
Never think "We are cursed that these great musicians were taken from us"; Always think "We are blessed because we got to hear angels, even if only briefly".
Jim wrote this song for his son who was at most 2-3yrs old at the time, he was Jim’s reason to start writing music again. It propelled him into the fame he would later receive. He sadly passed while his son was still very young. There is an interview with his adult son where he mentions in his own music career it took him to his later years before he could even bare to play it. He sings it now at his concerts in tribute to his father.
A beautiful song. Jim Croce (cro-chee) seems to be one of the forgotten magnificent artists that we should hear as much as possible. An artist we lost way too young. Imagine what he could have offered had he lived longer.
I grew up in the ‘60’s. Every time we turned around, we lost another wonderful artist. I am glad you are discovering what we have known for a long time that the music of yesterday still holds great value.
Thank you for the reaction, Harri! His untimely death was a true tragedy as the world was robbed of his incredible gift. While this is my favourite of his, Operator and I Got A Name are also beautiful songs. The song You Make Me So Very Happy by Blood Sweat and Tears is one guaranteed to make you and all of us smile! Keep up the amazing job you are doing with your reactions, Harri - every single one you do puts a smile on my face!!
@@smonk4473That's an interesting visual, but the whole line is: "Well I was just getting ready to get my hat, when she caught my eye, and I put it back."
His compositions have meaning for different people, regarding their own memories. He spoke through his music. This song was written for his young son AJ.
This man and his music is so important to me, I had my brother play Time in a Bottle at my wedding. I've Got a Name is a masterpiece and makes me emotional every time I hear it.
I was only 16 when Jim Croce died. I was heartbroken then and I still am today. I try to imagine all the beautiful music that was in him and that we never got hear. RIP Jim.
Another one to check out is "I Got a Name". There have been too many artists who died way to soon, but when I heard about him, it took my breath away. A lot of us grieved the loss of his smooth baritone voice that could portray fun lighthearted songs or soul reaching melodies that could make you cry with him. At least we had him for a while.
This song is a cathedral of heartbreak, sorrow, and beauty. Read that this was the last song of the night of their final concert. Then Jim and Maury got on the plane...
It's Crow-chee. Accent on the first syllable It's Italian. When the 'c' is followed by a consident, the 'c' is pronounced as a 'k'. But when it's followed by a vowel, the 'c' is pronounced as 'ch'. The name 'Croce" has both types of 'c'. He was a wonderful singer, gone much too early. A timeless song.
He sort of had a follow up type song to bad bad Leroy Called... You don't mess around with Jim..... I got a Name, Operator, and I'll have to say I love you in a song .....Are all great tunes
Not only did he die when he was 30, but most of his hits were discovered posthumously, and you are 💯% correct about how it was weird, him writing this song, telling his wife how she makes him feel and how she completed him. This was his last #1 hit and was written just before he died, but wasn't released (as a single) until after he died.
So lovely. It seems when we lose singer/songwriter who is a poet it grabs our heart. They have shared their heart with us snd we still yearn for more. John Denver is another. Sigh…
The guitarist is Jim's friend Maury Muehleisen. Maury's guitar playing added so, so much to Jim Croce's songs. They say that the two of them were both going to try to make it big, with the other to back up his musical partner. Once people heard Jim's raspy folksinger style, Jim's career took off, while Maury played guitar for Jim. Maury put out a little known album titled Gingerbreadd. It can be found on UA-cam. Maury had a softer voice than Jim, but the album Gingerbreadd is a gem. Listen to: A Song I Heard, Wintry Morning, Elena, That's What I Like, One Last Chance, and I Have No Time. You will be pleasantly surprised!

if I'm remembering correctly I believe going to a gig which was the last if not one of the last before him taking a long break according to his wife
Crow-chee. “Operator” is a must hear, as are most of his others. Sadly died shortly after achieving success.

Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Ricky Nelson & John Denver---all marvelous & smooth voices. Sadly they all died in plane crashes.

Jim Croce was one of biggest names in pop music. You couldn't turn on the radio in the first half of the 70s without hearing a Croce song.
In 1970 his wife told him she was pregnant, which was why he wrote this is song. I understand what you mean, so beautiful yet sad. R.I.P Jim xx
