It turned out really nice! The easiest way to fix it would be to power wash it & use a concrete stain to darken the stones again. Then use the quikrete grout & fill in where the sand is. Afterwards you can apply a concrete sealer over the entire thing. There's one that has a "wet" finish, so it has a glossy wet look all the time. Between the grout & sealer, it locks everything in place for good.
Hi, thanks for the honest update, try using SAKRETE POLYMERIC SAND or something similar. This is very much like sand, it fills in the cracks / voids and then you spray it with hose and it becomes hard. The down side is you will most likley need to get rid of the sand with leaf blower and refill the pavers with the polymetric sand. Also the weeds dig into the sand and will grow, unless you didn't over lap the weed barrier....hope this helps.
I'm SO GLAD you posted an honest update! I'm looking to do this project and it's good to know the lessons learned. Thank you so much! Hope you get it where you want it to be so you can enjoy it this summer!
It looks good. I used cement instead of sand when I made my porch, then I painted it black. No weeds. I kinda like the green showing through, just trim it down.😁💕
Thank you for an honest update, but now you know what needs extra time to fix life happens things get wonkie, one day you will be sitting out back enjoying your new patio. Still an awesome job, hope you and your hubby enjoy what you have done together. Looks like it's time for a nice cup of coffee with your feet up and enjoying your back yard.
Omg yess to all of the above! I truly appreciate your kind words and understanding! I not to long ago had a baby, got married, and caught Covid so life is just starting to smooth out for us.
It takes a strong woman to post things that she has done and admit not everything is perfect, your new baby and your hubby and your self come first and foremost, we all live with weeds and always will, you did an awesome job and an honest follow up, thank you for that, may God bless you and yours.
Hello Jazmin! I know it's been 3 years & I'm not even sure if you still have this patio. First, I wanted to say, I love your effort, intent & most of all your honesty. Anyway, I just read a about a product that supposedly would have been a far superior option than sand. It's called "Polymeric Sand". You sweep it in & add recommended water it hardens 2 benefits. Prevents bugs, ants etc. also prevents weeds& grass. *If you wanted to go extreme you could pressure wash, remove the rock sections, then use plastic barrier again, quickcrete actually makes a self leveling sand. Then add the stone pavers again, fill in with the polymeric sand so that you won't have to do as much of the high maintenance issues you were dealing with. Again, YOU WERE A ROCK STAR! I'm totally impressed with your effort. & NO ONE KNOWS UNTIL THEY KNOW... AT LEAST YOUR OUT THERE TRYING & GIVING IT YOUR BEST. I ONLY THOUGHT I SHARE BECAUSE I NOTICED ANOTHER VIDEO SIMILAR & HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY OF THE ISSUES YOU DID. FYI- I BELIEVE YOU COULD ADD A MATTE CLEAR COAT TO HELP PREVENT THE MOLD & MILDEW, OR AT LEAST PROLONG IT. let's be honest "nothing prevents mother nature from doing her thing". Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed your video & honesty.
Thanks so much for sharing. I still would like to take on this project. Your experience is very helpful and REAL. Helps not to have a pie-eyed expectation.
Yes! Great job!!! I love your detetmination to do, learn, repeat! Next, consider: . 30 second cleaner to clean. .stain concrete...a nice grey? Because its neutral. Spray on with garden sprayer or roll...easy! .dry, seal. .use polymeric sand to suppress weeds. .use regular table salt between cracks to prevent future growth. Can't wait for your next update!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 BRAVO!!!
My son did construction for years and he and his buddies built me a sidewalk from the house to my greenhouse in my backyard. It was such an improvement not to track mud in and out of the house. Plus constantly cleaning muddy shoes. I am not very strong, I am 4’10 and under a 100 lbs. I wish I could do this stuff! My mind explodes with ideas but my body says no….to much heavy physical work when I was young now my body is old and worn out. Just watching you maneuvering those heavy bags made me ache. This is backbreaking work and that is why my son got out of construction after 16 years also working in extreme weather conditions. I begged him for a long time to find some other work that wasn’t breaking his body up. Seattle we get snow, droughts and lots of rain. I am glad you got some help, and it turned out nice… everything needs upkeep and maintenance to preserve and keep it looking good. Please, please take care of yourself and listen to your body -some injuries don’t go away and get worse as you get older. God bless you!
I appreciate the honesty. I still like the concrete stones. It's been rainy everywhere it's hard to keep up with yard work. Very good suggestions in the comments. I still like this project, it has an 'old world' charm.
I just stumbled on your video of when you made this, so i clicked on your channel to see the update. One of the last things that you said was, "i can't wait to be using this all the time!" Yep, ive said the same thing on projects. It's all good. Hopefully you can enjoy it more. Sometimes we need a reminder that its healthy for you to get outside and enjoy God's creation. Thanks for sharing your experiences
Thanks Jazmin for doing the 9 month update to your initial work. You Did a great DIY job! I am transforming my back yard to an organic garden and zen garden. My videos will be public soon. Your video encourages me to move forward with creating the cobblestone area around my pergola using a mold, quikcrete & sand. I'm a good diy'er and look forward to the outcome. Thanks again!
Oh, I forgot to add, you can use the 30 second cleaner with your garden hose. Wait about 20 seconds, rinse. Repeat as necessary. No power washer needed. Good luck!
So good to see a real-life follow-up!! Not too bad….the hard part (to me) was the cement mixing. Easy fixes (as have been pointed out in some comments). The thing that drives me mad is the weeds…I’m a big proponent of weed barrier but that doesn’t always work, either. I’m still inspired…
Yes the weeds were an unexpected turn of events for me, since I used the barrier. I thought I was in the clear. This was definitely a learning experience for me. I’m a so glad I could inspire you!
I’m so glad to see your update. I just saw the first one after my project in doing my walk way and I’m now painting mine a lighter grey do a sealer as well
I just found and subscribed when I saw your project. You made it look super easy! FYI on the weeds. Google natural weed killer. It’s epsom salt, blue Dawn dish detergent and white vinegar. The recipe is posted. Follow the recipe. People say it doesn’t work. Trust me! It does!
Thank you so much 😊!! And I will definitely look into that! You are the 1st person to mention this type weed killer. I’m always skeptical about the chemical ones because of our dogs
I'm going to try this in a couple weeks. Thanks for giving me confidence! Out of curiosity, have you thought of lifting a couple of the cobbles where water pools and add some sand to bring them up to level? Just wondering if that's possible to do. For what it's worth, I think your patio looks great! I feel like the discoloration is an improvement...it makes all the cobbles look real and old rather than new concrete. That's just my opinion though and obviously, I'm not seeing it in person. I'd love to see another update in a few months. Thanks again!
Wonderful! I wish you the best of luck with your project 😃! I have thought about lifting the sand, however it is so heavy! I may have to have my fiancé give it a try and see what happens. And I will definitely be posting a 1 year update for everyone. I like to see how these types of projects last as well.
I just saw both your videos and love your patio! We have a large muddy area we want to cover and this looks like just what we need to do. To cut back on the weeds I'm thinking of using micro clover seeds or phlox. I'm also hoping it will withstand my large dogs- actually 6 large and 1 small dog- trampling over it.
Yeh I think I seen you used just regular sand and they have something called Polymer sand. This sand will HARDEN once you sweep off the access and then spray with water. The other option is of course getting concrete mortar to put between the stones. The most important thing though is the BASE layer being level or slightly sloped AWAY from the house. You always live and learn. If that is just regulars sand and you try to pressure wash it, it is all going to get messy. Keep us updated ;-)
Thank you for the update! Overall I still think it looks really good. Was wondering more of settling, or if the pavers cracked but they all looked good from what I could see. The other stuff is nothing that a weed whacker and hosing down wouldn't take care of. Thanks again.
May I suggest a Vinegar/Salt/Dish soap mix to spray on those weeds. Its safe around that puppy ( I have 3 dogs) , it’s cheaper than Roundup etc., and best of all it works great.
There's more grass growing through than i figured. But weedeater fixes that in barely few minutes. And you can easily paint some of those stones, will really brighten up the whole patio. Color the big ones. Easy to do, just gotta do it! Oh btw you need get a can of some kind of spray sealant or caulk and coat that rain gutter in leaky spots, will fix it no problem. It aint gotta look amazing, just fix the leak! Probably take 10 minutes with a ladder to stop most the erosion there. Plug the drip holes and done!
I think your project turned out great , i like the color of the concrete stone pavers . I've got the same problem with grass & weeds growing up thru the weed barrier even tho I over laid mine 6 times to make sure the grass wouldn't grow thru , but it does . So I'm gonna try with another project using thick construction type plastic wrap overlaying it a few times , hopefully that will stop unwanted grass & weed growth. 🤞🤞🤞🤞
Barrier doesn’t help prevent weeds totally because dirt and weed seeds blow in. Preen makes a one year sprinkle on product that keeps the weeds from germinating. I use that now and it saves me so much hassle of putting in weed barrier every year. Might not work for every situation but my rose and shrub beds are weed free finally.
We cut the weeds, but I probably won’t pressure wash because of the sand. I thought about putting concrete in between the spaces, but I like the sand look. Thank you for the suggestions and watching ☺️!

the easiest way to fix it is to pull the weeds as soon as they show up, you have to take care of it.don't do all that work just to let it go. think about planiting maybe some moss or something that grows in between cracks that is a ground cover, there are some that grows in between cracks and when you step on it it smells.
@@Hermorningcommute I know I’m watching a year later. My brother when he did this same type of project bought a big bag of salt, maybe the type for water softeners and mixed it into his sand. He told me it prevents any weeds from growing. I use “Preen” in my raised rose and shrub beds. It prevents all the weeds, so I don’t have to bother with weed barrier, it would probably be difficult to apply to small areas like that though. Love your honest videos. Life happens.
