  • “That’s normal, all kids are like that”
“She said a word, Stop calling her nonverbal”
So many people don’t understand Autism or what it means to be nonverbal/nonspeaking and have echolalia. So I’ll try my best to explain it in a way to help you understand.
Nonverbal autism means your child may not talk at all or may talk very little, only learning a few words or phrases in their lifetime. At the age of 3, Mikko does not understand most words at all. And has only ever said about 3 words withOUT prompt.
Children on the autism spectrum use echolalia because they learn language different. Typical developing children tend to begin learning language by first understanding and using single words, and then they gradually string them together to make phrases and sentences.
Children on the autism spectrum often follow a different route. Their first attempts at language may be longer “chunks” of language (phrases or sentences), which they are not able to break down into smaller parts. These chunks are more grammatically complicated than they could put together themselves, and they don’t understand what the individual words mean.
It’s ok not to understand something, but there are books and google to help you instead of telling a parent that they don’t know anything about their own child, as if you do. It’s dismissive and condescending. This is precisely why people are finding out they are Autistic as adults because some parents are in denial. Autism is not normal but it’s NOT wrong, it’s just different ❤️💙💛💚
    {disclaimer 🚨 i didnt notice signs of Autism when she was a baby, i just noticed she was different}
Autism is usually diagnosed after 18months***

My favorite analogy regarding autism is "It's not a programming glitch, it's a different operating system." I use it when my coworkers are misunderstanding something happening with an autistic kid. When you stop trying to push them into the way YOUR brain works, everyone's lives get a lot easier.

My Nephew is autistic, didn’t talk until he was about 2.5 but was always very attentive to anything that had alphabets. When he was close to 3, he started reading words. We thought he was reciting nursery rhymes so we would write random words down and he would say them. Yup, during the almost 3 years of not “learning to speak” he taught himself to read. God doesn’t make mistakes.

For anyone struggling with a young one on the spectrum: My autistic daughter is happily married now, and holds down an ok (if below her intellectual capacity) job. She has two close friends and a nice wider group. She paints, sings, and acts brilliantly in amateur dramatics. She has a great life. You can't have a proper chat with her, but that's ok. Everyone's different and life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful. When I struggled with her 20 tantrums a day, her kicking and punching, the screams, the poor eating, the doctors, speech therapists and psychologists, I'd never have believed things would turn out this well. Stay positive!

As a PK Autism teacher, this absolutely MELTED my heart. As teachers, we only have these precious babies for a small window of their development, but I am always in awe of what they are capable of at such a tender age.
Early intervention is key, but early intervention *with* intentional support and consistent application at home makes all the difference!! Families like yours make what we do possible from within the walls of a school, so thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do. You are doing great momma ♡

I was just talking about how in education, we look for signs of regression in early childhood and we see a lot at the Early childhood stage because there are parents that actually don't understand that it is what they were eating when they were pregnant and it is what they are feeding their child or not feeding their child. In looking at this video, I was noticing how verbal she was in the beginning and then I could see that gradual verbal regression....

But I almost feel it in my bones if her mother had just gotten off her lazy butt (I'm sorry but she did everything to keep having "her" fun and the beautiful red haired baby was actually growing into a huge problem. I babysat her and like I said I had been friends. I would her screaming every day not wanting to go to school just a big drama, i walked down there and could get her in the car np. It still angers me. I really think she could have had a much life with mental skills and emotional skills. 😢

As an autistic person I hate how you worded this. “Early intervention” for what?! To “stop autism”?! That’s not how autism works! We don’t need early intervention we just need understanding and support. Autism isn’t a sickness. It’s part of who people are. This is why I don’t trust Autism teachers, so many of you use weird language to describe us and don’t see us how we need to be seen.

It’s interesting how the symptoms of autism display differently in many across the spectrum. I’m 25 and only just recently got my diagnosis. My childhood came up, and turns out with speech, writing, and reading I was advanced- but when it came to my motor skills, I was always really behind. I still have pretty awful balance as an adult LOL, but I didn’t walk until almost 2, I didn’t crawl like other babies (I didn’t use my legs or knees at all, I just dragged myself around with my elbows LOL) and I was super clumsy (still am lol). I also never cried when I hurt myself (pain tolerance gang I guess) and didn’t cry when getting shots or ANYTHING, my mom told the therapist she thought I was just an easy baby but didn’t consider that I didn’t really respond to pain, that makes sense today too because as an adult I just kinda dissociate when getting a tattoo and convince myself it’s not that bad. Also going with social skills, while I wasn’t nonverbal, I was pretty oblivious and would say pretty socially inappropriate things sometimes and not know what was wrong until I learned from others how to kinda read the room. It’s still hard and I get anxious and overthink what I say before I say it, but I was bullied super hard in grade school.
There’s just so many different ways autism can display, and so many opposite sides of the symptoms in us. A few years ago when I thought I might have it, I told my psychotherapist (who diagnosed me with everything else under the sun, so I suspected they might have been false and were mostly just traits of autism) that I thought I might be autistic, and he was just like, “what? You can’t be autistic! If you were you couldn’t speak to me right now!” And I was FLABBERGASTED. Not only did I need my mom with me in the room the first few months to get comfortable enough to talk to this man, but even if I didn’t, all my best friends throughout my life were also on the spectrum, and most of them were pretty verbal, especially when it came to our special interests we would talk about for hours and hours.
I told my new autism therapist about that and she was also flabbergasted. I’m very grateful that there’s more research and resources now. I wish instead of just telling me I was bipolar when I was a child we had the tools we have today to actually explore the spectrum and diagnose people. I feel so behind at age 25 still living with my parents. I don’t drive because it either gives me sensory overload or makes me dissociate. On the bright side I have the first job I’ve been able to hold for longer than a couple months, going on 3 years there now, and I have a boyfriend, also the first I’ve been with so long- things are looking up, but I wish I started my life longer ago and was diagnosed earlier to get the help and accommodations I needed to thrive.
Thank you for sharing her story and being an amazing parent so she can have what she needs. Navigating a world built for allistic people as an autistic person is frightening, and is even more frightening and stressful if nobody realizes you’re autistic and puts you down for having needs they don’t understand or a brain that just works a little differently, so thank you for recognizing her needs so she can grow up understanding she isn’t weird or a burden or wrong for being born who she is- she is going to grow up happy, taken care of, listened to, and also in a world where autism is more understood so she can have better control of her life and be happy.

After I FINALLY got the diagnosis I was so happy/relieved I was sharing the news with everyone that had been on the journey with me. A friend of a friend overheard me talking about how long I had to fight/wait for an assessment. He asked me why I pushed so hard did I "want her [my daughter] to have Autism?" I was pissed and said "She already has it, putting off testing doesn't make it go away. Getting a diagnosis is how I can get the resources in place she needs." I wouldn't change my daughter for the world, she is amazing and perfect in my eyes. She lights up every room she goes into. Giving her the resources she needs makes her life a little easier (and safer) and that's what I fought for.

Give her fresh camel milk to drink for at least 2 weeks. It should help towards recovery. Autism is basically the brain being inflamated by some poison, toxin, heavy metal and so on. It seems camel milk has the property to help the brain cleanse itself. And you probably took her to the doctor to get her the scheme... right? Stop doing that. That's where the autism comes from.

Go eff yourself, “early intervention” you can’t “stop autism”. It’s not a curse or an entirely bad thing. It’s just how someone’s brain is, that doesn’t mean they need fixing or are less than. As an autistic person you stink for that.

I always get so mad that no one understands me and all I want to do is live alone and not talk to anyone or do anything.. I'm so tired and all I do is watch TV because it's the only thing that doesn't trigger my rage or sadness. It seems camel milk has the property to help the brain cleanse itself. And you probably took her to the doctor to get her the scheme... right? Stop doing that. That's where the autism comes from.

I'm going to be the one! At 18 months, my grandson got the MMR vaccination. He ran a fever, stopped making eye contact, stopped speaking, started walking on his toes and stemming. Non-verbal for 11 years now, but too intelligent for his own good. Figured out how to go on the cloud and download his favorite programs on an iPad by the time he was 3. We had to password protect everything to keep him from buying whatever he wanted. He bypassed most of the tantrums, but he was a runner and an escape artist, we endured the stares of people who thought we were cruel for leashing him. We used GPS tags in his clothes so that we knew where he was at all times. Had to give him swimming lessons because he loves water. Great swimmer now. He's better than a lot of adults. He is my pride and joy. Just learned how to tie his shoes last year in July. Unscrambling his neurons is my daily task. Thanking God that we can!

She is so adorable. My oldest spoke rarely before the age of 4. She could completely block out anyone she didn't want to speak to. At 4 she was tested for 8 hours and Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital by a pediatrician, speech pathologist, social worker, and another specialist I can't think of right now. Her speech was on the level of a 2 1/2 year old and showed red flags for Pervasive Development Disorder (a form of Autism). At 6 we repeated the testing, much to the joy of the staff who usually doesn't get to follow up. At that point she had enough speech to get an IQ test. She had a 42 point gap between verbal and performance IQ (normally only a few points difference. They told us she did not have autism but all the signs were from language disorder. They didn't have a full diagnosis or suggestions other than keep doing what you are doing and suggesting
Some books. While reading one of them I took it into the school and told them test her for this, this is my child. We were very lucky to find out the head of the Bill Wilkerson Hearing Center at Vanderbilt was one of the top in the nation for Central Auditory Disorder (basically an auditory dyslexia, what is said and what she hears are not the same). She was diagnosed with a severe case. She was the first in our county to be put in headphones while the teacher wore a microphone. This cut out residual noise enabling her to understand the teacher. They still gave us a list of things "she would never be able to do". She got mad when they cut her spelling words to half the other kids so we told them to have her do the same and only modify if she could truly not do something instead of if it was hard. They told us she would need more and more resource class over the years. She didn't ever need it. She had to work harder than others, but she now has an Associate and Bachelor's degree as a Special Education Teacher and had a wonderful relationship with her students.

I am 70 and awaiting diagnosis and already I am benefitting from having discovered why I am different to Neurotypical people.
I am doing away from masking, finding out who my true friends are, adjusting my frustrations such as knowing when to walk away or stop seeing people who try to change me. My marriage is stronger because we know better 'why' and 'how'.
There is so much help available now especially as it is becoming known more that there are degrees of how autistic a person may be and how many people are autistic.
My working life was hell, being a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. I could not understand why I could not fit in and neither could the NT people.
I am so glad we are all beginning on a journey of acceptance (on both sides), and hopefully we can all live better loving lives side by side.

Give him fresh camel milk to drink for at least 2-3 weeks. It should help towards recovery. Autism is basically the brain being inflamated by some poison, toxin, heavy metal and so on. It seems camel milk has the property to help the brain cleanse itself. And you probably took him to the doctor to get him the scheme... right? Stop doing that. That's where the autism comes from.
