One thing I've learned about really critical and judgmental people is…that they love to give it, but they don't like to take it. I remember I used to work with someone who used to trash me behind my back all the time. Then if she saw me taking to another co-worker, she would immediately think I was saying mean and nasty things about her (which I wasn't), she would actually corner that person and ask "Was she saying anything mean about me?" I think it's true that people who project a lot of negativity are actually very insecure with themselves and are afraid of criticism and judgement themselves, so they project their insecurities onto others.

When someone takes the time to express negative words in a not so constructive way, the only thing they THINK they are achieving is taking the spotlight away from themselves for a brief moment in hopes of escaping painful, depressing, ill thoughts they have about themselves. It's their bag of potato chips! Never take it personally. Keep on doing what you love to do! Thanks Marie, for putting yourself out there! Love your style and your hair!

This was amazing! Anyone who puts themselves "out there" whether it be on UA-cam, on line or life, in general, they are going to experience the trolls or as you put it clown holes! There are days when it can be hard to avoid, getting emotionally aggravated with the comments. Some of them flat out hurt! It is up to you to get rid of them! Still a hard thing for me to deal with after six years of this YT thing. But everyday I get a little better!

I have had a chronic illness for the last 2 years, ME/CFS...but because it's not very understood by people I get lots of hurtful comments...like "you're just depressed, snap out of it, get some exercise, it's all in your head, you're just lazy, you're crazy. I was so frustrated as are many others with CFS...so I posted on a FB support group I belong to..."...without anger or bad feelings tell me the lamest things people have said to you"....it was so hilarious and healing....I got so many responses and everyone was connecting and having fun with it. I know it doesn't sound like something you'd laugh about, but it made me realize that they were never going to get it and that's okay. Thanks so much for your videos...I love them.

I went through a spout of depression and anxiety to the point where I was on medicine for a short period of time. Some people who I had lived with and thought were some of my best friends started saying I was faking it and just wanted attention (which is great because these are the people who are known for flaws of being attention whores) and I really took it as a learning experience. It shows who your friends are. There is such thing as pointing out someone is being negative and asking them to pick up spirits so you want to be around them. But what was happening was I was being attacked and talked about by people who were annoyed that I was taking the spot light off of them for 5 minutes. I really love what you said about not letting people walk all over you. Because I always had felt really guilty being as mean back as they were to me.. in order to defend my self.

I am SOOO happy you did the hair thing. People are obsessed with hair. But Marie, you know that 100% of the criticism coming your way is from jealous people who grew up thinking that the are the law of the land. Trouble is, they want YOUR land, or what they 'think' you have in your life. They want what you have. Also I think all of those harsh comments from EVERYONE to you is abuse rather than criticism. Criticism for me has an air or feel to it that is very different from those stupid, awful idiotic abusive comments. So glad you did this video. Love the Eddie Murphy message:))

I just binge watched all the Jimmy Kimmel tweet videos on youtube after this. I have had such a laugh. They are brilliant. Humour and being able to laugh at yourself is one of the great strengtheners and protectors in life. Basically you are saying "I know what anyone says is more about THEM than me and I trust life and my real value anyway". Once you know your true value and both contrast and creativity will show you this through your life journey) you can have compassion for critics who are operating from a place of hurt/jealousy and/or misunderstanding. Keep up the great work Marie

Loveddddd this video! I get comments and criticism all the time. My favorite one was once, someone told me I needed to lose weight. I happily ignored her comment and then posted about it on Facebook. But not in a negative way towards her, but in a positive way towards me. I love my body, and I am happy and content. Her comment did not affect me, as it shouldn't, it only empowered me to feel happy with myself.

This post was so timely for me! Thank you for sharing. I recently had to decide what to do with personal, unconstructive insults (not towards me, but towards another commenter) in the comment sections of my videos. I want to encourage discussion but hateful remarks do not contribute to the loving, respectful environment that I'm trying to create. Finally, I decided that I want to protect my viewers by removing these types of comments and banning the offenders.

Thank you so much for another great video, Marie. It was great to be reminded that criticism comes with creativity. I'm not as sensitive to criticism as I used to be, but sometimes I still catch myself worrying too much about what others might think of me. What has really helped is realizing that there's probably no way to make everybody happy, but when I do what I love and what really resonates with me, I naturally attract people who like my work. The most difficult part was figuring out what really is me and what isn't. In the end, the answer was quite simple: If it feels good, you're on the right path. What everybody else thinks doesn't matter :) Lots of love & have a wonderful week! Anna

"If it feels good, you're on the right path. What everybody else thinks doesn't matter"
I certainly like this one, Anna! I will definitely walk around with it in my head. Someone once said, if you are doing something you love, and nobody is responding to it, it's their fault, not yours. Lol... I still find that one a little hard to believe but I am reminded to put more energy on the process, not always on the outcome and the feedback. Like you said, those who love it will be attracted to it!
      Cheers Anna!

    • @annafrolik1111
      @annafrolik1111 9 років тому

      Sheila Makena
Thank you so much for your reply Sheila :) The thing is that for as long as you do things to please others more than making yourself happy, you may be successful in the traditional sense, but it will be hard to enjoy what you're doing. If you just focus on what you love for the sake of doing what you love, it may take a while until you get noticed, but it won't matter because you're having fun anyway. Once you reach a certain point where people do start noticing your work, there will be no stopping you :) You'll see consistent growth because you can just keep doing what you're already doing anyway, and you'll also be likely to get a lot of support from those who love what you do. And if you do get criticism, it won't bother you much because deep down you really believe in what you're doing. It can be a bit of a healing process for sure, but it's totally worth it! :)

It depends what mood I'm in, if I am caught unaware, then I ask "Why do you say that?" casually, and they sorta run off. Otherwise if I am in normal state of mind, I kinda follow what you do, take a moment and see why they would be saying this right now, then see if any of it is useful, then say "Thanks for sharing".

Its a hard situation, but I am determined to not let them define me or hold me in their issues. I am doing so well and its the best. It totally doesn't fit with their gossip and rumors.

Another hit, Marie! I love how you handle any situation with grace and wild humor. You are so insightful and of course, always fashionable ;) Thank you for sharing some of your "hater's" comments to inspire the rest of us to be less afraid to put ourselves out there. Hugs to you, sister!

Agree with ya Marie..but disengaging with someone whom we love is really tough...in case they don't like us..thanks for raising up this matter of criticism..criticism to me is "a path unexplored within us" :)

marieforleo, it's so weird that this is the video you put up today. I had a day where I let the negativity get to me. Someone essentially tried to sh*t all over my plans for the future and say that I couldn't do it. I just said "That's my issue to deal with" and walked away but I could feel the sting after the event.
Thank you so much for this video, it definitely helped. I'll be sharing this video. Hopefully one day our videos will inspire people the way yours has inspired me.
    With love,
    Steven Farquharson of 2HelpfulGuys.

As an empath, I find that I can't escape the bad feelings and the self doubt and I have to let myself FEEL them and be upset because of them but the best way to release bad feelings is to let yourself feel them.

great tips :) I also think that for the most part when it isnt constructive criticism, but rather mean and rudeness - they really are the ones who are coming from a worse place and spending too much time being negative. xo

I loved this video! So much so, that I actually took notes! (but, I'm a nerd, so that's kinda expected of me)
Next time, though, we'll need a "No Pants Dance." Those are my favorite!
I enjoy your personality so much. In fact, I feel like I steal little bits of your gig for my teaching (I'm a biologist, and teach huge classes of 600 students), and I'm working it into my videos. You come across as caring, kind, funny, smart, and relevant. I just love it.
I just wanted you to know, I consider you one of my mentors. You rock, sister!

Late to the party but what I try to keep in mind is that often when I put myself out there, if I do it because I believe in what I'm doing, no criticism can hits me. If I do it because I (consciously or unconsciously) seek validation, any comment that isn't praise burns like hell. So I try to check-in with myself every time: do I do it for my ego or for the greater cause?

You are so stinkin' entertaining!!! Love it!!! So the hair criticizers probably have short/thin hair and they're just jay-lous of your lush lox. The chic that said you're obnoxious and your style is deceiving is probably holding back more in life and not saying the things she really wants to say and she's also jay-lous of you that you are able to do what she only dreams of being courageous enough to do!! But I'll bet you've already concluded that you sharp laday ;) Your hair is flippin' gorgeeoso!!!

I am super sensitive, I am very very creative and artistic, so to your point, I am more vulnerable to criticism , and I don't always take it well. I must say, there is no vantage point for me, I just recede and go into a shell. I am not proud of that, but I always look for the grain of truth, which doesn't teach me anything but self doubt

You're amazing! You are inspiring, smart, funny and wise! I absolutely love your videos and your great advice
on business AND life. It's soooo helpful and mind opening. This video really helped me to get another
perspective on criticism in general. Thank you!!
PS: You have amazing, natural beautiful hair--so amazing and perfect that people think it's fake
    which is pretty awesome!:)

I'm an actor, and the first biggish project I ever booked garnered some hate comments about my appearance. It was completely out of left field. It certainly taught me how to deal with nonconstructive criticism, though!
