  • 0-Coast is one of my top 3 favorite modules so I wanted to create a 'getting started' video for people who are trying to figure it out. It's not an exhaustive feature video but I wanted to take some time to address all sections without ending up with a boring bleep video.
    0-coast gets valuable help from 0-ctrl. I have both racked in the video, but I am not sure it's reliable, so don't try this at home. I noticed some weird behavior when clocked by 0-coast. Maybe there's some kind of ground loop when they're together in the same case and it may break my modules one sad day. I've replaced 0-ctrl with PressurePoints during this video. But hey, this is for science...

    Thanks for posting, can't get enough of watching folks use the 0-Coast! I have fun every time I touch that instrument. Try taking some of those "special" sounds into Audacity and slowing them w-a-y d-o-w-n. You can get sounds that don't go "dark" (i.e., don't suffer the drastic high-frequency loss normally associated with extreme speed reduction.). Awesome stuff!

    Excellent video. Only just got mine and the manual was tough to read and digest. Your video taught me more in ten minutes than I’d learnt in two hours of tweaking with the manual. Please do more with patch ideas too. Thanks

    Thank you! Deeply appreciated . Just got an 0-Control... finally learning what the 0-Coast is capable of. I had no idea it could sound like a saxophone or trumpet or violin! My favorite sequencer for the 0-Coast is the Spiral sequencer in Reaktor. Looking forward to more of these.Very inspiring.

      I wish I could connect my PC to the modular, but still have to wait for an ES9. Can't wait to hook up Reaktor!

    Excellent rundown, especially on Multiply and Overtone. I’ve been using the 0-coast for a couple of years now and still learned some new things from this! Awesome pairing with the STO. Also great to see it 0-Coast in conjunction with 0-Ctrl.
    One thing I like to do with the 0-Ctrl dynamic gate to Dynamics is to externally clock the 0-ctrl. Then, the Speed knob changes the dynamic contour on the fly, really fun to perform.

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, indeed, clocking 0-ctrl from 0-coast and playing with speed gets some incredibly complex rhythms. Love it!

    Excellent tutorial. Thanks a lot. Got my 0-coast by 'accident' a few years ago. Someone offered it to me in exchange for a SID-synth I had for sale back then. The 0-coast was the initial spark for me to get interested into Eurorack. It kinda brought back the spirit I felt in the late 1990s when experimenting with my MS-20.

      @@CinematicLaboratory As I mentioned, it was my initial spark to get into Eurorack at all; ... a format I tried to avoid and deliberately ignored for many, many years (for decades, to be honest). I believe that there is a thin line, - especially if you can afford 'the gear' -, that getting into Eurorack can easily degenerate into something like a 'model-railroad-hobby'. (I hope You know what I mean. Sorry, English is not my native language).
      ~ 10 years ago I visited a guy who is REALLY DEEP into synths ever since the early 1980s'. A guy who even wrote books about synthesizers and developed stuff. I've seen a prototype of a Doepfer-system in his studio, as U.D. had sent it to him just to ask what this guy's personal opinion is on before mentioned prototype.
      Asides this guy has a workbench in his studio, just in case he has an idea for a circuitry. First thing that happened to me at this place was getting a first-degree-burn whilst accidentally getting too near to a Jupiter 8 heatsink. *lol*
      This guy never released any music. Ok, it is by far not as sad as it may sound ... he is part of the local electronic-music-scene in his town and he does lotsa live-jams with other musicians at a local club they gather once a week. Who is he? What is he? A busker and a hacker and a developer and a writer in one person.
      Me, myself and I ... I just wanna make some music to some degree ... to the degree of what (?) ... who cares at all anyways ... :-) Maybe my goals are too high (?), not in a point of popularity, clicks or likes ... that's bollocks. Impact? Not really, as You cannot change the world by making music. Really? I still believe that the world can be changed by Music. The weather in my country can be influenced by the stroke of a wing of a butterfly on the opposite side of this planet. Therefore I still believe music cannot change the world, but the hearts and minds of individuals.

      @@Mr.PastGlory Thank you for sharing such a great story. I must admit my eurorack collection starts to look like a model railroad indeed, but it gave me so much pleasure exploring all this stuff while transitioning between hard work and retirement. The modular is like solving musical puzzles and I truly believe it has a healing quality. You don't need cases full of modules, you only need the right combo - but that's hard to find. 0-coast is a great start, I learned a lot from it. I believe music is one of the best languages to express emotions and feelings. For me, music is like a diary of memories. I don't know if music can change the world, but it can make a lot of people feel good or better. Best of luck!

    Fantastic as always, thank you! I noticed the system changed up during the video...dual PP vs 0 CTRL for instance...No DPO needed for this video, so STO. I use a Vector Sequencer in my system, but am thinking about 0 CNTRL for my 0 Coast. It operates much differently than the Rene for you I’m sure. I look forward to the MIDI programming video for 0 Coast.

      I noticed some issues having them both racked, they work fine when they're 'alone' in a case, but I get weird stuff when they're in the same case. I believe they're not properly grounded when connected together, but I am not a technician. So during the video I switched to PP, but when I reinstalled 0-ctrl for the last sections everything worked fine again. But I noticed noise coming from the 0-coast when patching something simple like slope to dynamics. Definitely a grounding issue, also occurs when I patch from the CV bus to a module. Nothing to worry about, but I don't want people to break their 0-ctrl because of me. This rule of having at least two cables between 0-ctrl and 0-coast may also have something to do with it.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  4 роки тому

      Indeed no DPO. Adding an STO to 0-coast basically turns it into a dual primary oscillator with a completely different sonic palette. Check out my 'supercoast' video for more info :).

    Very useful, and I will be returning to this again and again as I continue to explore my 0-Coast (had it for three weeks or so). However, it seems that, to take full advantage of the 0-Coast, you need either a modular set up (not going down that rabbit hole!) or an 0-Ctrl, as almost everything you do here involves a patch from other gear. Looks like my next purchase will be an 0-Ctrl...
    Edit- I’ve just re-read this, and feel I should update it. About two months ago I DID go down the modular rabbit-hole, and one of the first joys I discovered was that the 0-Coast plays very nicely indeed with what I have. Not that I was ever bored with the 0-Coast, but it’s made it come truly alive again- hoorah! (but poorer…)

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  3 роки тому +1

      I don't think 0-coast is designed to remain on its own considering an ADSR envelope (contour = keys) and a Midi to CV converter so you'll need a basic controller like a keystep pro or a PC/Laptop to get the most out of it, otherwise you'd be stuck with selfpatched alien communication - which is enough for many of us - but it's dying to do bass lines and leads!

      @@CinematicLaboratory I have a Keystep 37, which gives me a degree of control and plenty of cv out, but it’s not surprising that it plays nicest with its stablemates. Anyway, it’s not a synth you expect to master in a matter of weeks, is it?

      @@walrtbstudios5430 Personally I feel the 0-coast is very easy to figure out, it's a set of simple tools you can combine in lots of ways. I always felt I never 'mastered' 0-coast. Instead it taught me how westcoast
      synthesis worked and many stuff I found out was immediately applicable to the bigger Shared System. So 0-coast helped me a lot!

      Hi Marko, I am using a simple Samsung S7 phone to record my videos. S9 should be better on paper, but it isn't. S7 has much better colors. I record in 4K so I can zoom into HD later and the images are very sharp. I use the S7 on a tripod. I noticed it shoots extremely well in low light conditions, even better than my Canon EOS and the S9. Recording goes directly into Ableton. I snap my fingers after Ableton did the count-in so I can sync later. I use Adobe Premiere to edit. My audio interface is a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 MK2. So it's pretty low tech but it works like a charm.

    Was never a big fan of the 0-Coast. It can make some cool sounds but i've always found Make Noise's products in general intentionally obscure and more designed around making crazy sounds than actually making music. Whereas modules by companies like Mutable Instruments, Noise Engineering, Erica Synths, etc I can just take out of a box and make music without ever consulting a manual.
    Jacks are spread across the panels, text isn't consistently in the same place relative to the knob/input it goes to, lines are drawn everywhere to show signal path but it clutters the look, sometimes attenuverter knobs are the same size as regular parameter knobs, parameters sometimes have strange names or are intentionally not named (QPAS literally has two different wildcard !! inputs and resonance is just a triangle). A square around a jack is a CV input, an arrow into a jack is a signal input, an arrow out is a signal output and a weird circle thing is a trigger / gate input - this is nice and all but every other manufacturer's module I own its incredibly obvious which inputs you use for what without needing 4 symbols.
    Great job explaining it and using it though.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your opinion, I really appreciate that. You're absolutely right about the form and function of makenoise designs. It's almost like an alien language you'd need to learn before you can operate it. I think Strega and Morphagene are even 'better' examples of design obscurity and I personally feel the Strega UI is indeed intentionally obfuscated to make it feel sensational - even though it just makes a lot of ugly noise at first patch. But from a musical perspective I feel MakeNoise can easily produce sounds you've never heard before as opposed to Plaits (which I absolutely love). I believe there are much more suitable brands to get you up and running with modular synthesis, but I also believe MakeNoise can help to keep it interesting in the long run. And to be honest, I had to read way more Mutable manuals because my eyes are too bad to figure out the tiny icons.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth 3 роки тому

      @@CinematicLaboratory Thats one reason I sold the Morphagene haha, the other was that every time I used it I had to open the manual to remember which button combinations I needed to use and how to sync it to a clock. I feel like some people really enjoy that sense of discovery with Make Noise products which is great, but for me I care more about how quickly a piece of gear lets me get the ideas out of my head onto a recording.
