    Despite my best efforts, the Snatch 4K still looks too dark to me, while some of the so-called 'worst transfers' end up looking great. What did you think of the True Lies 4K?

      sharpening and noise reduction settings are off on my tv. Yes the wax figure thing isn't noticeable throughout but there are shots that stand out and kinda ruin the moment. But even without the DNR, the black levels were totally off during the outdoor shots in the opening scenes of the film and are inconsistent throughout the movie. It's an action film so it is supposed to be immersive so in a way the noise reduction makes sense on a level, but there are times when its too intrusive and it has the opposite effect
      I'm a fan of the LOTR transfers personally. A lot of people feel the DNR ruined it, but I disagree.

    • @80sMadeConsumer
      @80sMadeConsumer  12 днів тому +1

      @ oh for sure it’s not a perfect 4k, but I never felt it was unwatchable like many said. I am running an OLED I thought the blacks were great, also I was going from a VHS to that 4k.
      I haven’t grabbed the LOTR 4ks yet and suspect it’s the same thing some people like them some don’t.

    • @SirJamestheIII
      @SirJamestheIII 12 днів тому

      @@80sMadeConsumer most people feel the dnr in LOTR is subtle. It’s mostly extreme film preservation types who decry it. But it was shot on 35mm so I am sympathetic to the people who want more grain, but it’s a fantasy film and I don’t think it’s a bad aesthetic choice.
      True Lies, T2, and Pirates of the Caribbean are the trio of “bad” 4ks that should be redone imo. If 4k is the final format these films will be on in the foreseeable future, I do think it is ok to criticize a transfer for being anything less than reference.
      Have also heard not good things about Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
      Then you have transfers like KL’s Silence of the Lambs that aren’t bad, but are “incorrect” with respect to the original artistic vision of the film. The original color timing should be kept.

    Warm colour tone is actually the standard they use in the movie theater.
    I suggest people use a calibration disc like the Spears & Munsil discs. It has several test patterns to get perfect colours, brightness and sharpness for your TV.
    Once you've done that, you know that the your movie picture quality is exactly as intend by the content creators.

    So why would a 4k movie look good and another look bad with the same settings then? We have to change the settings every time we watch a movie?

    • @80sMadeConsumer
      @80sMadeConsumer  12 днів тому +1

      Not all 4ks look as good for many reasons. An old movie shot on film outside with natural light will have an amazing picture compared to something shot on a cheaper hand held camera indoors. The Blu-ray of the Vikings from 1958 is far better looking than True lies 4k.
      By changing the settings in general some not all of the 4ks on the Worst 4k lists aren’t as bad or bad at all. For example Plane Trains and Automobiles was listed as a bad transfer, it’s a solid 4k on my tv, and I even saw a reviewer that said it was bad changed his mind after he got a new tv.
      You don’t have to keep changing the settings. Once you dial it in that’s it. I have only changed things to test 4ks out for this video. Here is a link to a TV reviewer that explains it in way more detail: ua-cam.com/video/uGFt746TJu0/v-deo.htmlsi=gmX1pQsCtzCXlebm

    You’re so right about tv settings. Nobody should ever run the settings out of the box. First thing to go is eco mode. I have an LG which is probably less accurate than your Sony but I always use filmaker mode unless it’s Dolby Vision. For Dolby Vision I have motion smoothing only up to the point to stop jutter and as little soap opera effect as possible. I use Dolby Cinema home which is a little brighter than the plain cinema setting and I don’t have the crazy colors or artifacts going on. Skin tones are pretty decent. I think the term you may have been looking for was the d 65 white point for the warm setting. This was a good video because people really need to study their tvs and change settings. What a difference it can make. This is a much overlooked topic in physical media. Bravo to you for bringing this topic to light. These things can greatly help people enjoy their physical media far more. The only other thing that can be done is to have it professionally calibrated and in a lot of places this may not even be available. I’m happy with my 83” LG oled for the immersion but I know if anyone wants the best out of the box accuracy it’s gonna be Sony or, Panasonic now. Great subject my man! 👍🏻

    • @80sMadeConsumer
      @80sMadeConsumer  9 днів тому

      Thank you not every one had such kind words haha. That was the main reason I went with the Sony, after a year of research and many trips to the store, in the end it was the accuracy. LG was a contender. Sure each tv is diffrent and some settings might just have to be low, all boils down to tv & personal preference. The great thing is you are aware of these issues so many people don’t want to hear or try it. Some 4ks aren’t great, but so many that made those worst lists aren’t bad at all. Yes 65 white point that’s it. If people could just get off the cool setting that would be a good start. I just watched Se7en on 4k and my picture looks amazing, some of the online side by side still shots look dark compared to what I’m seeing. I don’t think anyone is complaining about that transfer just something I noticed. If only I had the room for an 83 inch tv maybe one day.

    I have an LG 65 Nano 4K tv. I always have it set to Filmmaker mode (except when it’s outputting in Dolby Vision because DV doesn’t have FM as a setting) and films usually look great. I will say that it took me a while to adjust from the sharpness of 1080p Blu-ray transfers on 1080p TVs. I actually had the sharpness on my 4K tv turned up, but I had to turn it back down because it was causing visual anomalies with the color/brightness (took me a while to figure out what was causing it). And it’s true, most of your tv settings can just be turned off and movies will look better for it.

    There’s also people who buy cheap entry level televisions and see “4k HDR” on the box and think they are experiencing true 4K HDR. I don’t blame people though because most people don’t go into the weeds with display technology etc etc.
    Even the entry level TVs are different from each other! At the same price point, TCL and Hisense offer more features and better performance than a Samsung and Sony counterpart. But the average person wouldn’t really know that.
    Even my 98in QM7 looks terrible with default settings, but when I tweak the settings I get a great picture. Specifically the “Local Contrast” setting HAS to be turned on at least on low or high. If not, the picture looks washed out and dim.
    I think anyone that wants to get the most out of their physical media should also be somewhat informed on TV technology and at least be aware of common displays and the differences between them. Digital Trends and Stop the FOMO have many videos where they discuss the “best value” television at the moment which I think is a great entry point for most people.

      @@123clyd3 I agree too many people just think it’s plug and play. Not naming names but I’ve talked to plenty of UA-camrs that did just that either left everything alone or turned everything all the way up. When I sold TVs that was the same thing.
      I agree more talk about the actual gear with an understanding of why, and not just “ buy this because I did” would go a lot farther to help people than the fomo videos.

    There are physical movies and shows where the source material is intentionally dark or dim. So it might not be your tv. I recently watched The Mandalorian season 1 and the well lit or daylight scenes look great, lights look bright and vibrant, but a lot of scenes are at night or dusk or in the shade and it’s dark. Probably to help blend the cgi better. Bad Boys 1 also comes to mind.

    The soap opera effect is only worth using for live events, like live sports or award shows and such, not prerecorded films or shows. As far as sharpness and grain, the only times I am disturbed by them is when the film with all default settings gives an insane about of grain that goes into plain old distortion territory. Disappointingly, the 4k Rocky Ultimate Knockout edition is guilty of this, as well as Sidekicks from Vinegar Syndrome. Not sure why no reviewers mention this but the grain is FAR too distracting, to the point where the bluray looks better.

      I never claimed it was perfect, but it's evident that the TV settings are significantly affecting the picture quality on all 4K TVs, which is why there is a growing movement for a standardized 4K format. If the visual experience of a film is causing such division among viewers, it seems clear that the issue likely lies with the TV settings, rather than the film itself.
      To clarify my point, adjusting those settings eliminated the 'waxy' appearance on faces and revealed the subtle film grain that should be present. While not every scene looks flawless-some close-up shots of faces still appear unnaturally smooth-the overall result is a marked improvement.
      For context, I have a Sony OLED, with the following settings:
      Sharpness: Minimum
      Reality Creation: Off
      Random Noise Reduction: Off
      Digital Noise Reduction: Off
      Smooth Gradation: Off

      I haven't seen True Lies on 4K yet but I have The Abyss, which people also complained about. And I think it looks pretty good. Detail looks good, people look natural. Not grainy (but still looks like film) but that doesn't automatically equal "bad." James Cameron has always, ALWAYS been in pursuit of his films looking as clean and as clear as possible. If it were possible for him to have shot his older movies full digital with no grain whatsoever, he'd have done that because that's what he likes. He's the creator. They're his works. He can make them look how he wants them to look. If you don't like it, don't buy it. But complaining about a creator doing what they want to do with THEIR art is cringe AF. Especially when the end results don't seem to be nearly as objectively bad as everyone is trying to make it seem. Personally, I like the way both T2 and The Abyss look on my 77" QD-OLED

(I don’t have any of them) what I find most surprising is coming from James Cameron himself. He scolded those who didn’t like the transfers. Fortunately, he did a fantastic job with The Terminator, Titanic and his two Avatar films.
    As for 4k itself, I’m finally finding myself able to justify the upgrade. TV, receiver, player (No room for Atmos) not to mention a growing collection of discs, box sets, limited releases, this hobby is getting frightfully expensive. Releases of some of my all time favs is turning around the Titanic (pun intended) Movies like True Romance and JFK have lightened the blow considerably. The Blu of True Romance stinks to high heaven! I noticed that and motion blur more on older TVs not so much on my last two TVs. Each tv and setting is different, you don’t need to turn it off, but all the way up produced what most people were complaining about on many of the discs deemed “bad transfers” I would suggest putting on an action scene and play turn it off or low see what looks best for you.
      For context, I have a Sony OLED, with the following settings:
      Sharpness: Minimum
      Reality Creation: Off
      Random Noise Reduction: Off
      Digital Noise Reduction: Off
      Smooth Gradation: Off
      Motion Flow: Off
      Cinemotion: Off

    Interesting, I still have two different versions of true lies on laser disk, I wonder how they would compare to the DVD, once a full screen directors, cut aspect and the other ones, the wide screen theatrical presentation. I think that terminator two kind of set this whole mess in motion For James Cameron, if that one had not been botched, I think maybe people would be a little bit more forgiving with true lies, the abyss was done pretty good and the last one he put out the original terminator looks great. As per aliens, I guess it all depends on how you like to view the movie for the moment, do you want to see a modern cut or the original Blu-ray theatrical cut, I own both so believe it or not sometimes I’m in the mood to watch the 4K and other days I’ll put on the original Blu-ray, but the funny part is I still do own all of them on laser disc as well, have the original 1995 AC three Dolby remastered cut of aliens and the old 1992 special edition version of aliens. The only thing I will say about 4K is when they get it right in Atmos or DTSX it sounds awesome, but when they don’t Even the standard 5.1 DTS can sound like crap. I’ve experienced this with species DTS 5.1 on their 4K and I’ve have experienced this with. The crow on 5.1 DTS. What I mean is those DTS tracks sound way better on laser disk, I don’t know why in particular but this species vocal track sounds low rest for sure kind of liquidy sound, very soft, but when I put the laser disc on, it is almost as if I wish they would’ve cut it from this disc/took the DTS track from the original species laser disk. I also have Armageddon on laser disc with DTS too, I hope they get the Atmos right because even sometimes the Atmos can sound a little flat compared to the DTS tracks. I have heard here on laser disk, Jurassic Park almost sounds similar, the DTS track on the laser test sounds huge, but they actually did do something right with a DTSX extract on the 4K Blu-ray, they utilized a lot of the front mid and back height, which was really cool, but yeah, good stuff.

      I agree and still own several movies on many formats depends on the room I’m in or the mood. Also have CRT TVs for VHS and DVD as well as 1080p hd TVs. I like different experiences with different films. The sound is something that I care greatly about some timelines they knock it out of the park and sometimes they don’t. Having the Marantz the bigger disappointment is on some older DVDs, but when I play them upstairs on my older pioneer system they sound way better.

      Hear something funny, and I keep this DVD because it’s an example that I played to people that this is how a mix should not be done, you probably can still find this DVD mix today. It is the worst 5.1 I have ever heard, full of Bad compression and too much limiting, the triple X DVD. When I wanna show up, how mix shit sound I purposely put this one on so they can understand what bad sound is, the triple X DVD is the worst of the worst that I have have come across even from today’s standards. There is one thing for sure, though on DVD, the first five years in between 96 and oh one, if it had a 5.1 track which believe it or not was rare, they did a pretty decent job when DVD was new, a perfect example was the second edition they released of the fly in 2002, they gave it a DTS and Dolby 5.1 on that DVD, hands-down the DTS was the best, the second addition of X-Men also had a alternative 5.1 DTS, which was hands-down Way better than the Dobe, a time with they cared about DVD. It wasn’t always the case, though, DTS sounded terrible on 8 mile for some reason, I don’t know why, but it did, the same thing with pitch black, the DTS didn’t sound that great compared to the Adobe, this was rare super rare Because most of the time DTS would always stand above sound wise. It also doesn’t help that both of those movies are universal, but universal from then on with the Bourne identity usually gave us great mixes, sometimes I think, and this is just me theorizing, having listened to the mix on pitch black and 8 mile sometimes I think it was a Mixup of title sound flaw, sometimes I think they miss titled the DTS on those movies because I can’t think of any other instance when the DTS sounded worse than Adobe and, the HD DVD I have of pitch black has a way better DTS 5.1 than the DVD, which was also another rare thing, so yeah I think like I said it’s just meet their rising they may have mixed up the title information on the track maybe.

    @1:25 I’ve never heard anyone call it “motion flow”.. is this brand specific?
    @2:10 enhanced sharpness isn’t “soap opera effect”, lol. “Motion flow”/ smooth motion/motion interpolation is soap opera effect… idk where you’re getting your info.
    I’m not even saying these movies look bad, but you’re straight up strawmanning and gaslighting people by saying they’re definitely using these features. The reviewers on UA-cam and other sites most definitely are using either calibrated screens, or have at least engaged “film maker mode”.. so it’s really bizarre that you make an entire video immediately blaming people for picture settings you pretend they’re using.
    I happen to not really think these movies look bad, but I don’t like disingenuous arguments. Just say you like the way they look, and move on. No need to gaslight other people

    • @80sMadeConsumer
      @80sMadeConsumer  11 днів тому

      Thanks for your feedback. Let me clarify a few things.
      "Motion Flow" and similar terms: Different manufacturers call motion interpolation by different names-Sony uses Motion Flow, Samsung calls it Auto Motion Plus, and so on. I used Sony’s term as an example because I was trying to keep the explanation simple for viewers who might not know the technical jargon.
      Sharpness settings and the Soap Opera Effect: While sharpness isn’t the sole cause of the Soap Opera Effect, it can contribute to an artificial or overly processed look, especially when paired with motion interpolation. In many cases having a motion smoothing feature on a low setting with sharpness increased or maxed will give the unnatural picture associated with Soap Opera Effect. Again, I was simplifying this for the average viewer who just wants to know what settings to turn off for a better picture.
      On reviewers and calibrated screens: While some reviewers could use Filmmaker Mode, not all do, the feature isn't on every tv. Turning on Filmmaker mode turns off the features I was recommending be turned off. So the fact that you don't think the movies look bad is because of your tv settings. One high-profile reviewer called a certain 4K release “one of the worst looking of the year ” and later walked back their statement after upgrading to a better TV. That’s why I emphasized TV settings-it’s an issue I’ve seen firsthand.
      Most people aren’t thinking about motion interpolation or calibration; they just want to turn on their TV and get a great picture. My advice is for those viewers, if you want to get into the why and the technical that is why I mentioned tech youtubers.
      If you check out the side-by-side comparisons in the video, I think you’ll see why I made these points. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

  • @shaolin95
    @shaolin95 10 днів тому

    Ok about interpolation. How can you even claim it doesn't look natural? When was the last time you went outdoors and the world was running at a 23hz stuttery mess??? 😂
    You do know why 23hz was selected? It was not because of any artistic merit but because it was cheap. That simple

      More and more modern tvs that is less noticeable and I only ever found It distracting on older LCD HD tvs to too bad on my 1st 4k tv at the normal seating distance and virtually undetectable on my OLED. The higher frame rate just looks goofy when it is cranked up to the max. I have mine off but there are low settings that could be fine tuned to get the best of both worlds.

      It's not a perfect 4k by any means and its very clear that there was heavy DNR. With my settings off and my Sharpness set to min (50 is considered neutral) There is very subtle film grain. The film isn't unwatchable like people were reporting. A few of the close up face shots look more smoothed out. To reproduce what people were saying I had to crank my sharpness all the way up, and turn on Motion Smoothing, Random Noise Reduction, Digital Noise Reduction on. Does it deserve a redo yes is it perfect no, but overall it was better than my VHS. I picked True Lies because so many people were saying it was bad and so many people were saying it was good.

    My 4K Sony TV settings have been dialed in correctly since the day I took it out of the box. True Lies is, without question, the absolute worst 4K image I have ever seen on it. It's not just that the faces are waxy, in fact in a lot of shots it looks great. But the shots where it's bad, it's REALLY bad. The scene where Tom Arnold's character is talking about his divorce (specifically mentioning how his ex-wife even took the ice cube trays with her), it is so distracting that it took me out of the movie. It's like they did an AI upscale of an old DVD or even VHS copy of the film. It looks artificial--and it's nearly impossible for me to get past that part whenever I watch the film because it's just so. bad.
    That being said, I have zero complaints about any other movie I watch. They all look great. It's really just James Cameron's films that are the rotten apples, with varying degrees of issues that I can usually look past without any problem.

    • @80sMadeConsumer
      @80sMadeConsumer  7 днів тому

      I can see that, and really have no arguments it isn't a great 4k, I used that one because with my settings it isn't "unwatchable" like many were reporting. My problem was a few of the close up face shots were way off either by color or didn't look real. This restoration brings a lot of fighting in the forums some people love it lots hate it.

    I have seen so many people complaining about bad picture quality before and they are allways using a cool color tone or sharpness to high or motion smoothing. All should be off or low if possible. And yet most ootb presets are setup to use these features.

    resolution is super overrated! people watching low budget 80s horrors on 4K and stuff, like come on! no low budget film directors didnt think you was gonna re-scan their films and put it under a Microscope, some films should be left on DVD or a Blu Ray at best, thats the format that the directors work still has its magic!.... when i got in to movies as a 90s kid it was VHS and CRTVs, resolution ment nothing because the resolution was creativity and art! it out done all these ultra sharp 3hr+ BS modern movies that people buy three copies of for no reason but the boxes looks abit diffrent! 🤔😁

    As someone with tv calibration experience - the Biggest culprit is people with mediocre TVs or TVs with poor accuracy in their movie/filmmaker modes. Any time you fiddle with gamma/contrast enhancers/dynamic tone mapping or even watch in Standard/Vivid/Home/ etc modes you are setting yourself up to FAIL.
