Artificial intelligence has really blown everyone away in recent weeks. The latest advances in AI hold out the promise of improvements in healthcare, air travel, agriculture and many other areas, including languages. Some fear that AI could be misused. The history of science cannot really prove them wrong. This testimony makes a few observations about the recent use of AI in learning English and translating English into French. AI does not yet seem to be truly indispensable in languages. Above all, these findings highlight the resources of human beings, who barely realise what it means to communicate in a language of which they are not natives. Machines have made great strides, but they are still not ready to create and make the connection between spoken and written language at a reliable professional level. The human being remains the benchmark despite the colossal progress made by machines, and that's an achievement in itself!
