My favourite tip: whenever I'm close to buying something on a whim (a coffee, new clothes, whatever), I'll move that amount of money out of my chequing account and into my savings account. Usually, knowing I've saved that money is enough of a dopamine hit to calm the urge! And if it's not, I just dig into my savings account to pay for the item (which hurts more, somehow).

This comment is top notch, it could also be combined with something like Robinhood. When you wanna buy something put that money in a stable dividend etf and if u really want it sell that etf and make it really hurt lol. The thought of my money not making money is painfully

Something that helps me as a homemaker, is to think of my husband at work and what his wage is. "How many hours did he have to work to pay for this item?". It helps me decide if those hours of my husband being away from our kids, myself and our home, was worth the item i want to buy. It really helps me with the impluse buys. Also to think of the things we are saving for and remember we will reach our goals faster if i dont bye all the things i want or THINK we need on amazon!

Another way to do it is to calculate the expense in time. For instance, a $10 dollar sandwich would cost 15 times more if you are 20 because you could incest the money for forty years and get $150 for retirement

Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. The examples you provided are relevant, and I personally benefited from the market crisis, as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.

I’ve been doing the once a week grocery buying for several years and I recommend it. I am very strict about it - if I run out of everything except oatmeal before shopping day and have to eat that for two days then next time I plan more carefully. I have come through this period of inflation spending about what I spent four years ago because I have learned how to shop more efficiently.

I grew up knowing the more you go shopping, the more you buy. My Mom only went grocery shopping twice a month. One large shop, one small. The large shop did take 2+ hours but she would do a freezer check/pantry check prior & went with an extesive list. She had a budget and stuck to it. The small shop was two weeks later and was for more fresh things that you go through fast.

I work at a major supermarket here in Australia as an online shopper. I actually use the service myself, shopping each week via the app. I order the stuff we need then get it delivered to the boot of my car. This saves money because I don't impulse-buy in the shop itself (oooh, that's on special!).
This is why shopping at Aldi is a false economy because you save money on most food items but then you go to the centre of the store... afterwards, you walk out with your shopping, a wetsuit, and a trumpet. 😂

    • @beth3535
      @beth3535 9 місяців тому

Shopping at Aldi is false economy? It depends on how you shop there, just as you describe your method, how one uses Aldi or other sources is a matter of executing a well-thought out plan. I am a regular Aldi shopper but not to the exclusion of other 5:07 resources that enable me to keep my grocery and household expenses within budget

When I was young and stayed home with our children for a few years my husband was paid twice monthly. We went to the grocery every two weeks. I guess sometimes we might have had to go to pick up bread or something. We spent about $50 every two weeks back then. We had to be wise shoppers. I had to plan meals for two weeks. I stocked up on whatever meat was on sale and food items on sale. We bought Kroger’s polar pack fudge ripple ice cream for 99 cents - a full half gallon carton. That was a treat - especially if we bought ice cream cones too. I made a homemade dessert almost every night - I guess when there wasn’t the ice cream for dessert and kept homemade cookies in the cookie jar. We ate better when I didn’t work. The kids played outside too. Riding bicycles, roller skating and playing basketball etc. We didn’t eat out much back then. On Friday or Saturday nights we would get two pizzas from Little Caesars for $5.00 and then it was 2 for $8.00. That was a treat and I didn’t have to cook supper and wash a lot of dishes and pots and pans up on those nights. Back then we ate at the table and I put the food in bowls on the table like the way I was raised up. There were times my husband would work a part time job too. He retired in his 50’s. He is 70 now and I am 68. The years do fly by. Looking backwards they flew by.

We spent $200 on both our wedding rings, they were custom made from an etsy artist. We have beautiful rings that fit our aesthetic, and we supported a small artisan. We got married at the court house in front of a judge and had a potluck BBQ at a friend's house after. We thought the idea of spending thousands on a wedding and reception was asinine. We also meal plan, because it saves our budget and as vegetarians we eat mostly fresh things so you want to only get the things you're going to actually use before they go bad. Little things add up over time.

I agree on the wedding. We got married in 2001. Our wedding was at my church, which did not carry a charge because I was a member. The women’s fellowship served with dessert, which was the only thing we served, no meal. My sisters in law did the flowers. My wedding ring was a small custom made one carat diamond. It cost $95. In all, I think our wedding may have cost $1000 if we count in the donations we gave to the church, my $100 wedding dress from the thrift store. (Still beautiful.) and our photographer. We had a fabulous day and a three day honeymoon given to us by our workplace and we did not go broke. It can be done.

Just thought I'd put this out there for anybody looking to spend less on a wedding/engagement ring. No matter if you want the classic diamond ring with gold bands or something different. My eldest brother remarried at the beginning of 2023 and for his wife he bought her a recycled wedding ring online, with a gold band and multiple diamonds. My 2nd eldest brother gave our grandmother's ring an engagement ring to his wife. My 3rd eldest brother went online and researched vintage wedding rings and got one for his wife.
If you don't want to spend a lot of money on a ring, your partner doesn't care about the price tag, then do some Google research. It's not hard to find something out there that you like both materialistically, aesthetically, and at a price you're willing to pay.

What is surprising is that a bunch of small purchases add up very quickly but you can at least see that your going to blow your budget this way and curb buying those dish towels, catnip, etc. Buying them when you think of it would really break the bank without even realizing it.

I like to make wish lists on amazon with various themes. I usually don't end up buying any of it and often when I return to the list months later, I don't even want any of the things in it. It kinda feels like I already bought it and there's no dopamine to be had from it anymore.

It’s surprisingly easy to have a cheap wedding and reception that is very nice. There are pastors (or other church leaders of various religions) who will gladly perform a marriage ceremony for free. There are churches, parks, and really cheap venues out there that cost little to no money. Bachelor/bachelorette parties? You can just set something up at someone’s house or at a nice restaurant. The list goes on. I mean, why blow so much money on a (hopefully) one time event? Save it for a down payment on a house, or a car, or a baby. Don’t be like the 75%+ of people who spend so much money and time planning their wedding, and little to no time planning your lives together. Just my two cents.

My grandma was the best grocery shopper. She would mark each item by the area it was located in the store, she would never backtrack in the store, and she wouldn't buy anything not on the list❤❤❤

Here in my country, I can reserve shoes or clothes for 24 hours in most stores for free. When I have a "shopping day" I go to the stores, try on several clothes and shoes and then reserve them. If I am not back by the agreed time, the store sells the goods to another customer. For me, it's like actually shopping. At the end of "shopping" I even treat myself with a cup of coffee and feel like I'm after an actual shopping spree. Of course, I never go back for the goods. I buy what I need right away, the rest stays in the store 🙂🙂

I agree so much on the one about the wedding... I know it's an important ceremony but I feel like most people just spend that much money on it just to boast and try to make others feel envy of them, which is so in tune with what society is rn (showing off). My brother is about to get married but he's just gonna do a small meal in a restaurant with the closest family and friends, 10-15 people max. You really don't need more

Friends of mine made their wedding rings for each other in a goldsmith workshop. These rings have an unique design, combined with a beautiful memory they both share. The price was not much more than the metal, and if they had brought some older jewelery they didn't like anymore, it would even been cheaper.

Only going to the grocery once a week, will leave you with a lot of none fresh food. That is disgusting! Back when I was young and on a budget, I used to go to the ATM monday morning and cash out an amount of money, that would go to EVERY single expenses i had, you know food, cigarettes (back then), petrol for my car and such. But it was also big enough to leave a little bit of room for "fun", like an ice cream on a hot summer day or such. By doing so I always had money on me - and the rest of it, went straight to my budget-account paying my rent and other expenses, any other amount of money went for investments. ;)

very good video, you seem a very sensible young man; i do that once a week shopping thing nowdays and always make sure i have some burgers in the freezer; i also tend to eat up left overs the next day for my lunch to get the grocery costs down: i like the tip for your wedding day: when i got married in 1976 we had cheap wedding rings, and no honeymoon; mum and dad paid for the wedding, but we got the flowers: expensive weddings were not the norm so as long as the bride and bridgeroom are happy thats all that matters .thanks for your advice

Weddings can be ridiculously expensive but it's possible to have an actually classy traditional wedding, that is beautiful, on a much lower budget if you just simplify things and cut out the flimflam. Also plain gold wedding bands are not expensive.

I think the American idea of an expensive ring comes from the days where women didn't have an income. If their husband died, or anything bad happened that left them broke and alone, they could sell and have money. More gold=more security
