You’ve just proved to people that you need a 40k aluminium canopy with a coffee maker etc. Keep it simple, & factory so it doesn’t void your warranty. I travel around Aust in a 35 yr old VW. I doesn’t have modified everything. A really great video guys 👍

Great truck, we choose a 76 series for the same reasons, easy to work on, parts access and reliability. We have a gvm up grade and a tow tune and I would not swap it for anything else. Love your videos, keep it up.😊
Cruiser held up well, not so much the kidneys, damage report, kidney transplant coming up down the track. Most uncomfortable jigging vehicle I've ever owned.. Great, and the best work horse ever built, I could not drive one every day as a toured.. Mate, if you ever get yourself a 200 series, you'll wonder how the hell you put up with driving that 79 every day. Cheers great vid 👍

Hi. Great video on how much things cost. I’m getting too old to do this dream now but have done a bit with an old HJ60 and camper trailer. Just a couple of things I’ve heard from mates traveling. With the suspension, don’t use air bags, chassis not made for this. The Rangers are an example. And Stedi lights, can’t go wrong with great light and not over the top with pricing. Curious on your guys’ experience with the factory air box. Did you get much dust through to the clean side? Even a little? We had some in our new 78 after a half-day trailing another car on a track and got concerned with it. Ended up purchasing a terrain tamer shim kit for just over $100 (incl a filter) and used some rubber grease on the filter seal. 7000km later and a trip to central Aus and not a speck through, seems to have fixed it for us without having to splurge on a new box. Interesting, we have family that just upgraded to a VW Crafter Van 410 Thats had the back converted to an office & place to store x2 Honda CRF300L Dual Sports, they pull a Caravan but its a Jayco 4WD Cross Track 14ft Poptop I think. I haven't seen the Caravan but was interested in the VW Crater as its a 410 Rear wheel drive and can pull 3,200 kg *Do you guys do Reviews?
Great vid...... don't put in a tune, leave that shenanigans for others. Yes your truck will have more power but it will reduce engine and drive train life. As for the comments on after market air cleaners, some folks just bolt shit on for the sake of it. Again leave that to the beard strokers. The commwnt from old mate and his jeep, personally I would not buy a 79 as they are not my cup of tea, however comparing a jeep to the most durable and heavy duty vehicle on the market is ridiculous. I'm not saying that Toyota is the only vehicle, but please a jeep cheroke. C'mon dude, there is no way your vehicle could pull what a 79 could and in the conditions. Talk about a set up where the tail wags the dog. Great vid, jeep up the good maintenance and ignore the temptation of bolting stuff on to what is a good vehicle

Hey Gav, thanks mate! We are running the Maxxis RAZR ATs. They’ve been great, we’ve put upwards of 40000kms on them and still plenty of life left. I reckon we’d run them again, the best 3ply AT when you consider cost for performance

Yeah it’s surprising hey. I’d love to see a comparison, but it’s hard cause the roads we travel can contribute so much to maintenance. Services in remote areas do bump those averages up significantly too.

OMG, this is why I would never have a 79 series LC. From the start, this is my thoughts, and you love your 79 and that's all that matters. But, that fuel usage is terrible and $800 a month for service and running costs, also so many parts on these 79's that need replacing is crazy Have done heaps of traveling towing my caravan and just general servicing, no replacing any parts, (so far) around $800 per year and fuel use best 14l/100 worst, 19L100 and I drive a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, go figure.
Different strokes for different blokes! These figures reflect towing 95% of the time on the worst roads in Australia for the past 2 years. Absolutely we could have something cheaper to run and more economical and that would be fine most of the time but in those instances like the Gary Junction where we are putting 100% faith in the 79 to get us home 100% of the time id bet the house on it.
Seriously man. I have a 2015 JGK Summit and whilst it is economical on fuel and comfortable to drive it is no way built tough like a 79 series LC or as off road capable pulling an off road caravan. I have taken my Jeep on the Old Telegraph Track, Savannah Way and Gibb River Road, but am just lucky nothing major has broken (except when it was my fault). Unless you only ever drive on sealed roads, I find it hard to believe you have got away with only around $800 per year on repairs and maintenance.

I will say I was towing a MDC camper for some time, now a hybrid caravan and it does it easily. I really wasn't comparing GC to the 79 as a pure off road vehicle 79 is better, but as a tow vehicle, gee would prefer a Jeep GC over a 79 any day, far more comfort, so quite and towing with an out off date 5 speed manual, no way. I do all my own servicing, so only paying for oils, filters etc, etc. Ok, the 79 is very rugged 4WD, not really comparable to a Jeep GC. But, the thing I don't like about the 79 so there is so many parts that need to be changed out after paying stupid price for the car at the start. For an all round 4WD the Jeep GC is a great value and does everything I want.

It was a design flaw i cant believe we are still going on about this dent. Will somebody please think of the children.
Ive got a aluminium canopy on aluminium tray and have similar cracking and my canopy is a budget one as well.
Yeah i have had a few people say the same, i reckon some reinforcement plates in the corners would be the go.

We've been pretty well everywhere and haven't had an issue. I do check regularly for dust but glad i saved $1500 on something we didn't need.
