the music is naked but full. Some make fun of their simplistic musicianship, but they know how to put a song together. Everything fits.

It really is true. I just watched Rush playing Jacob's Ladder Live, with Pearts solo in the middle and was blown away at their technical prowess and musicianship. And now this brilliantly crafted song by U2. Both are amazing in their own merit. If someone compares between two such polar differences in terms of "better than" or "more than", then in my opinion, they're trapped in a very sad place in terms of being a fan of popular music, or music et al. Seeing an old Delta Blues artist from the earlier part of the last century is just as moving to me. Lighten up, is what I say.

This one brings back good memories. I was 16 back in in '83, the best age ever during the best time ever! I was free, having fun, trying to be cool, popping my collar, and trying as best I can to scam a 12 pack of Michelob Light at the local UtoteM. Stay Gold Ponyboy!

Don't know if the instruments are playback but this is definitely not the studio vocal track! The album version sounds different. This is sung live, no doubt.
@@mikecumbo7531 I didn’t say or mean that the whole band was live,The original comment was regarding Bono’s vocal being live and whilst your right that almost 90% of performances on that show were lip synced some of the more quality singers would sing live over a backing track,If you listen to the original recording on the album War you’ll notice it’s quite different,More produced plus a couple of ad lib phrasing changes….
Immortal track full of melody , dynamics and a solid beat. Helps to have " the edge" over other bands.
No auto-tune, just perfect pitch and a better than LP live performance.

i was obsessed with U2 back in highschool..they at one time were quality post punk. its a shame how they turned out..Joshua tree was really their last notable record everything following that was just pop commercial shit.

Agreed although I do really like Rattle and Hum and Achtung Baby. I honestly think Zooropa was their last truly good album as I do personally find it to be very underrated.
I have really enjoyed their last 2 albums, Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience which got me liking them again as much as in the early War days.

Their early stuff was great and I was a huge U2 fan back in my student days in the early-mid 1980's. War's always been my favourite U2 album followed by October. The days when their music had a more 'political' edge IMHO. Way too commercialised now. My personal feeling is they started going downhill from Joshua Tree, and even that album wasn't all that great. Achtung Baby was a blip in some parts back to their old sound albeit with a more modern slant. Thank God they never repeated the style of Rattle & Hum, which was utterly dire. Just the occasional track from their latter day selves (Vertigo, Beautiful Day, New York) is any good now, and I'm not interested in any of their later stuff at all. I haven't bought a U2 album for years. Like the rest of us, I suppose they've had to move with the times and try to appeal to a younger audience, but I think the old, and edgier, U2 sound of 35 years ago has gone forever. Sadly.
I think this reflects the fact that the time goes by, and experience, feelings and emotions at 20 are different than experience, feelings and emotions at 60, luckily. From a fan perspective I understand what you say, then it comes to personal preferences, for instance for my taste October is better only than NLOTH (their worst for me) and I love (not my favourite thou) HTDAAB, but again when it came out I was 20, so probably it resonated with me and my emotions back then.

He actually does play but he's never been too great at it. I'm surprised at how little his guitar is heard, if it's even plugged in, since I've heard him play guitar in concert many times. "I want to play the guitar badly. And I play it badly.
