This is the only guitar channel i know of that addresses the psychology of learning and not just the technical aspects. I know it's effective because I see huge improvements when i focus on small weak spots instead of meandering comfortably around the fretboard. I need to go back to working on my A minor bar chord fingering until it's quick and smooth.

The difficult part is not allowing yourself to become distracted once your brain becomes 'Happy' with itself. The proclivity to listen when your mind thinks it's satisfied and jump topics is where the discipline lies. Train that ego centric mind to stay on point, or generally what happens is an hour or two will go by, and said brain will be so happy with itself, while you can't remember what you were initially working on in the first place. I think that's the rationale for the multi faceted 'Practice Routine'. Not because it provides results, but because your just giving in to what the mind wants. Disciplining your brain is just like disciplining a child. They'll run amok if you don't continue to consciously reign them in. Once that skill is down, like any other, it will be automatic and you'll instinctively practice what's necessary.

Good points. I totally agree, I like to keep my brain guessing. But yes, when you can just play the instrument, the weak points show like a sore thumb. Thanks for sharing!

I've been trying to learn guitar for the last 25 years without succes. I've found you on youtube about 2 weeks ago and you already cured my "I can't" disease and gave me tools and understanding of learning to make progress that I can FEEL on the instrument already. Thank you so much !

Putting all of my eggs in one basket on triplets this passed week. They have seemingly sped up enough on their own that I can’t really notice that I’m still playing a triplet if that makes sense ? Watching a previous video when you said “some don't realize their biggest challenge is rhythm”. Has really rang true and I’m focusing on nothing but since then. Many thanks Claus

I have to say that as an individual with autism, hyperfocus has always been second nature. So now that i teach the instrument for Yamaha, people often ask "how!?" "How do you do that? And how can i do that!?" Well you have to be passionate about very little else, and throw your being into this wonderful pursuit. Mastery is not for everyone, but those who are inclined must first realise, then accept the reality that there are no shortcuts outside of obsession. Cheers!

I purchased The Ultimate Alternate picking Training System course off you quite some time back..That's all I did was get obsessed with doing the exercises and seeing it through.. I carried with the obsession, only doing Alternate picking and nothing else... it paid off a million percent! The obsession is the way to go coz you've drilled it into your body, it's a perfect strategy

I've never been one for the traditional practice routine. I would just do "drills" for any technique I'm weak at. Then, after a week or two, I'd try to learn how to incorporate it into my play style. Now, THAT is the hardest part. It's fundamental to learn this, so don't neglect it.

Boom! Doing it right now on horizontal soloing only. 1 month and then reassess to see if that was enough to surpass "good".

@@lelandgaunt7130 Funny, but actually I am doing exactly what Claus has instructed me to do, that is, exercise #31 in the Soling Incorporated course which is to solo against backing tracks using ONLY a two string set and ONLY horizontally exclusively for one month and then reasses. I already know how to solo at a basic level, but these focuced exercises are fabulous at concentrating on ONE aspect only of effective soloing and breaking out of the box vertical orientation. It is fantastic fun to slide around up and down the string set and the patterns are getting cemented in my mind in an exclusively horizontal way. Will one month be enough on this to have it mastered? Who knows, but the focused exercise so far is paying off huge dividends for me. It is not that you will master soloing in a month but rather you are breaking old habits and ingraining new ones which seems to be pushing me forward at a rapid pace because of the intensity and the focus - just like Claus advises. So happy about this! AND it is a whole lot of fun so each morning I am enthused to get back to it. Happy camper here.

@scottjones6624 Guitar licks exercises, slurs should be assessed in 6 month increments. A month will do absolutely nothing for you or anyone except give you frustration and disappointment that you're nowhere you expected to be at the end of that month. It's great that you're sticking to it, but be logical about it. Give yourself 6 months to a year. The problem is, you'll soon get bored after you do only that, and with very little progress, it's a recipe for disaster.
You're obviously a beginner going by the keywords of "breaking out of the box". No one needs to break out of the box, some of the greats hardly did. Only a beginner would say that because they don't know any better. Hope it does work for you, but the fact that you said a month, tells me what I've seen in many, many students.

If I were to take your advice and apply it on percussive fingerstyle guitar. What should be the sequence of skills or sub skills to learn? How long do you think it will take to master then? How will I know if have practiced a skill enough to have mastered it so that I can move to the next thing?

The only way a practice routine will fail is if you dont stick to it. Using athletics is a bad example. You practice MANY skills with sports. Strength, Agility and Endurance. You dont practice one or two things...thats not how you progress. No coach will ever coach or train anyone in only working one thing.
