About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Thank you so much for including me, Glenn! 💜🤘 I am honored!
Your channel is what I've been looking for, new subscriber here. So glad he mentioned you!
@@4namolly Thanks a ton for watching! Always glad to be of help!
You are definitely one of the top versatile female vocalists in metal and have been for a while 🤘. I’d honestly be shocked if you weren’t mentioned.
@@CreativeMindsAudio Thank you for always supporting me! 🤘
I used to listen to your old band Luna Mortis when I was in High School. Legit never thought I'd see your name again. Glad to see you've been doing well on UA-cam.
I’m surprised I haven’t seen a single comment for Courtney Laplante from Spiritbox. She can do everything from poppy cleans to hauntingly beautiful cleans to brutal screams. Definitely my favorite vocalist in metal right now. Oh and also she’s Canadian
Her one-takes are phenomenal
She is a pretty impressive vocalist but I find that she kind of sings monotone and is a little boring. Which sucks because like I said, she is otherwise an impressive vocalist.
Totally agree on that!!!
I really used to like her but you just had to end it on her flaw
Absolutely. She is awsome and still underrated.
I know it's hard to make lists like this and I respect your choices. I'd like to add Britney Slayes from Unleash the Archers as an honorable mention.
I would agree, britney has a superb voice and technique. Her range is nutty too
Seconded! She's such a powerhouse and her technique is excellent, especially on their most recent two albums.
Did you hear her guest appearance on Star One's "Fate of Man"? Now, that's intense singing.
Yo great choice, she’s an absolute power house. But in the context of modern metal, where there’s harsh and clean vocals from a single person, this doesn’t apply to her as Grant does all the harsh vocals for their albums!
I love those kids!
ABSOLUTELY!
I’m so glad that you started with Jinjer. Tatiana is as good as they get. Her vocal fry is completely unique. I’ve heard many female metal singers and no female can hit the notes that Tatiana can hit.
I suppose I am bias because Jinjer is my favorite band. But I agree with that statement completely. I feel she is the best female vocalist out there because of the complexity of her vox. She nails it on clean/growl and screaming. I also think she writes great lyrics. Their songs always tell a story no matter how vague. Thanks for posting.
the only female vocalist that even comes close in range for both clean and vocal fry is also on this list - Alissa White-Gluz. There are female vocalists who can do the lows or the highs, and maybe mids, and then maybe they'll have a good clean voice, but with limited range. Or maybe they'll just be like Mallika Sundaramurthy, or Som Pluijmers, and only do lows and have no singing in anything they've ever recorded seriously.
@@needsLITHIUM What about megan targett from vexed? She does well at both(still not tatiana tier), you should check out their album culling culture.
I'm surprised with no Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers, especially since she's also Canadian. Also Tommy Karevik of Kamelot is one of the best in the game right now in my opinion. Trivium have been around for a while but they're all still younger than a lot of the artists on even this list, so I'd absolutely throw in Matt Heafy.
Female singers are a nice side-break from metal, but have a "glass floor" on their descent to hell.
Vouching for Brittney Slayes.
Brittney Slayes and Tommy Karevik are my go to examples of great modern singers
Brittney Hayes. The "Slayes" is an utter cringe facepalm.
@@snap-off5383 Cool story
Hey, thanks for including me in this, really appreciate it - Dan
I'm gonna throw Will Ramos into the ring here. I typically gloss over the harsh vocals that tend to be the go-to for every band but holy shit this dude is insane. It is absolutely insane what he can do. Elizabeth from the Charasmatic Voice did an analysis on his voice and also had a chance to interview him. Totally worth checking that out.
Trevor Strnad (The Black Dahlia Murder) & Dickie Allen from Infant Annihilator!!!
I think you should have put Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox in here as well. She is amazing. Her control both on clean and screaming live. Also, Sam Carter of Architects. Another singer with amazing control and a wide range in both cleans and screaming. Both amazing. Sam is also very stoic about his vocals, so that’s always a plus.
Respectfully disagree about Courtney. Her voice is not that good when compared with the other ladies on the list. And yes, Sam is amazing.
Agreed, Rule of Nines live really shows off the control she has and Lena from Infected Rain is up there with Tatiana in my opinion.
@@GabiBrooks just, no :) Alissa had way more variety in vocal lines and arrangements when she was still with the agonist, now it all just falls flat to growl at cheesy ammot's riffing. Jinger is ok, but nowhere near spiritbox. Those three women are at least on par, I think Courtney stands out with voice tone and control, but I guess this is just a debate about tastes from now on :)
@@tome4961 I actually don't like Alissa's growls in Arch Enemy. My point was not that. As a screamer and clean singer myself I can say for sure that what Courtney is doing is essentially singing almost one note, pop-inspired, easy range stuff and her screaming is inconsistent bursts of air, not controlled. You can actually hear that in her voice if you know what to look for. Again, not to bash on her as she can clearly improve. But at least with Alissa I know she can sing pretty good and scream pretty good as well. My problem is that people put Courtney on a pedestal of technique and overall perfection while it is obvious she is only doing basic stuff for a metal vocalist. If you have a video of her belting, having some dymanic on clean voice I will gladly take back my opinion but from my research I haven't found anything that can make me feel like she is as amazing as people make her out to be. She is cute tho 😁
@@GabiBrooks cuteness has nothing to do here. Courtney's voice is anything to my ears but what you describe. As I said -> matter of taste. Opera singers are surely great and technical at what they do, but it would still fall flat on me :)
Absolutely spot on. Thanks for the video Glen! Simple but also super enjoyable.
Dude, I love seeing clips of singers in the studio. It's always amazing to see their expressions when singing.
Glad you did a follow up. The last video had me going, "Okay... what about..." many listed here.
I'll toss some on the pile:
Mike Semesky (HAARP Machine, Intervals, Raunchy)
Courtney LaPante (Spirit Box)
Rody Walker (Protest the Hero)
Chris Baretto (ex-Periphery, Monuments)
Elliot Coleman (Good Tiger, ex-Tessetact)
Vicky Psarakis (The Agonist)
Yes!! Completely agree with this entire list, especially Mike Semesky, kind of rare to see a low baritone thrive in modern metalcore/prog
I'ld like to throw into the ring: Niklas Karlson, Vocalist of Orbit Culture. Clean vocals like a young James Hetfield - but better - and his Guttural Vocals are some of the best i've personally heard in the last few years. For reference: Give "Flight of the Fireflies" and/or "Saw" a listen.
I would add:please replace Alissa white glues with him.
Both are good Vocalists, but as far as I know he is not an ungrateful parasite of a front man LOL
“Clean vocals like a young James Hetfield”?? Hetfield’s vocals were never clean in the early days. Have you ever heard of Kill ‘Em All???
@@Cammi-Cat-XIII based on the diversion we have in modern metal between "harsh" and "clean" vocals, it's fair to say those from dear old James were clean vocals. Surely with a grit to it, but they cannot be compared to real harsh/guttural vocals.
@@leonspohr6558 those were not clean vocals in the slightest. The way he sings nowadays is clean, but back then they were very gritty, which is the opposite of “clean vocals.”
@@Cammi-Cat-XIII Yeah, no. I know the old records at least partly. . What he's doing are clean vocals, what you think of as "harsh" in that case is just a natural distortion which will automatically add when you sing with a higher pressure and a slightly engaged soft pallet. I guess you can call it harsh singing due to the distortion, but compared to what actually is meant with "harsh" it does not qualify. That's just my opinion on that matter.
Adrienne Cowan of Seven Spires: easily one of the most powerful, versatile, and technically proficient female metal singers on the scene right now. Britney Slayes of Unleash the Archers is another easy choice.
10000% yes. Having met both of them too can confirm awesome folks, amazing voices.
Great show, Glenn! We should also check out some of the Symphonic Metal singers for bands like Nightwish and Kamelot too.
So glad you mentioned Daniel Tompkins and leprous, they’re some of the best IMO
I'm so glad you mentioned Tatiana and Spencer! I didn't expect a mention of Devin Townsend! Strapping Young Lad is some of the heaviest music I have ever heard!
Plus you have to be metal to pull off the bald but long hair look.
I love that you included a lot of live examples of them singing. That's definitely a good tell to see if they can actually pull off what's on the record!
Hey Glen, this is a good list and will keep me busy with things to listen to. Definitely check out Rolo Tomassi for some cool stuff, also been really vibing spiritbox
Can’t believe I missed this one. Good video!
WHY DOES EVERYONE FORGET GENX! We are the forgotten middle children. However, Greg Puciato of the Dillinger Escape Plan. I know he is almost my age (43) we all played the same scenes with Unearth and Shadows Fall, Brian Fair can sing well too. I am starting a new band more like my old weird Jazz Metal Fusion Spazzcore stuff with Doom and Ambient noise. With some raspy vocals and my 6 Octave Dramatic Tenor Operatic Metal range (Bruce's 80s tone with Halford's 70s Range) Can't wait to get SENSORY OVERLOAD! Onstage soon!
Because we all decided to stay out of the pointless intergenerational bickering. Just keep quiet, we have goodwill from both sides right now. When we're noticed at all.
Sadly we lost my favorite newer vocalist in Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder. His vocals and lyrics are not only the best of the newer era but hold up with the greats of all time. So sad he passed
I can't get over his death. Him and Riley Gale, two of the most likeable guys in metal, gone way too soon.
@@Davier9999 definitely man
Floor Jansen is another incredible versatile female metal vocalist.
She has a very long carrer though, I wouldn't consider her part of modern metal scene...
She's a warrior continuing to carry the torch from a previous generation. I believe she's coming up on 50 now.
@@nicholasmullins3693 Floor is 41.
Agree she is just stellar. The Valkery queen.
+1 on Mary Zimmer. She is a phenomenal vocal coach. Highly recommended.
Completely agree. Tatiana has said that she works very hard on her lyrics. She doesn't want anyone to miss them so she's big on articulation. Not easy to do since the same mechanisms you would use to pronounce words are also the ones you need to make some of those sounds. You got her name right BTW.
I just received the new album from the band Bloodywood. Indian (Eastern, not American) metal! I really love the twist they put on everything!
I'd like to add in Joakim Broden of Sabaton.
He's got that "Listen, kid. Lemme tell you a story" kind of voice.
If we're including Joakim, then Attila from Powerwolf should be included as well.
🤣🤣🤣
Yup, his voice is really unique
The question is: Does the band still look for a singer now?
Where's Greg Puciato? The guy's got the vocal range of Freddie Mercury with even more power, and his screams are musically tight and coherent. He killed it for 20 years with Dillinger Esc Plan, and he's still got every ounce of what it takes to be great with Killer Be Killed. IMFO, one of the best metal singers to ever pick up a mic, and definitely one of the most underrated.
20 years ago isn't modern metal in this context
@@jpbguitar6470 his new band has only been around for a few years, plus he does some solo stuff. Sounds pretty damn modern to me. Sure, he might be old, but so am I, and I just joined a doom sludge band at 42.
Travis from Cattle , he's not new but he's bringing something fresh to extreme Metal. plus those guys write some pretty catchy stuff ✌️
Travis Ryan is the man, but Genn doesn't like growling.
Alissa White-Gluz? Seriously?
I've never heard her vocals for Arch Enemy without a ton of effects and filters. Just sounds fake and overprocessed.
Honestly, her clean vocals for Kamelot are far more interesting than her creaming.
He's entitled to his opinion. Nobody think alike. That would be boring.
If you like horror as well as metal, a vocalist I CAN'T RECOMMEND ENOUGH is Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills. Dude is a BEAST.
INK is awesome!
Spencer is definitely a great vocalist, but even more so a phenomenal frontman
I was shocked to not see him on here. One of the best frontmen in all of music right now.
I saw JInjer in Speyer (Germany) in 2020 - absolutely phenomenal. Their opening act, another female-fronted band called Dust in Mind, was great too. They're French and their vocalist is Jennifer Gervais. You should check them out!
Had a quick scan of the comments, and was surprised that no-one mentioned Manuel Gagneux of Zeal and Ardor; I hope you'll give them a listen (and hopefully even a mention!) Because they are phenominal live, too!
Green Lung are a great newer band, too. Incredibly Sabbath-y sound!
I was going to mention Emily Highfield of Suldusk, too, but I kind of feel that it's not quite "metal" enough: it's more witchy-folk with black metal influences and the occasional moment.
Throw in my vote for Zeal & Ardor as well. Totally unique act and approach to metal.
Zeal and Ardor and Green Lung are totally worthy mentions
So glad you talked about the Hu! They're bloody awesome. Their cover of "Sad but True" was heavier than a fucking black hole.
Man, seeing Dan of Tesseract live is unreal! He is really on top of his game, clean or harsh.
As usual nailing it, and no doubt there will be plenty of comments missing the point and shedding many tears over nothing more than personal preference.
Jinjer was the first time I've been to a live metal show, it was right when they were blowing up for the Pisces video. It was a really small venue not deserving of their talent, but they still did an amazing performance, and Tatiana's vocal was just as good live as in the studio, something that always bother me with metal bands.
Now here’s the video I’ve been waiting for.
Completely agree with your selection!
So glad to see Einar Solberg on this list. Honestly Leprous have raised my expectation of what music should be.
The worst thing about them is they make other music suck in comparison
No complaints about the number one, I was subscribed to Siegfried's channel when the collab happened and found this channel...
Another thing to point out (and you have before but this just in general for someone scrolling) are the people able to successfully take care of their voice.
I remember I saw Jeremy McKinnon perform with A Day To Remember more than 10 years ago at Warped Tour and their label had them on an absurd year-round schedule touring with no breaks and you could tell he was getting exhausted from it. Saw them two years later after they got off their label and they controlled their own schedule and he killed it. I’ve seen ADTR probably six or seven times since and he always performs sounds phenomenal and should be recognized for his vocal ability. It’s amazing what a little rest can do for your voice.
Dino Jelusić. His performance in Michel Romeo's new album is incredible.
Absolutely! Because he kinda sounds like Russel Allen! Hehehe!
I personally don't care for all clean vocals in metal.. even when the singer is phenomenal, clean vocals take away from a lot of heavy songs for me. I do LOVE when people manage to do something creative with mixing the two (Jinger) or when the extreme vocals are done differently. Devin Townsend and Joe Duplantier for example! Great Vid!
Same here man. Metal has changed over the years. And harsh vocals are are an example of how to add intensity to the genre
let's not forget about Spencer's progress as a vocalist.
Compare his vocals on P1 or P2 to his vocals on P4 and you'll hear it, even the greatest can always improve!
No, they're just cleaner and worse. Literally every some for monuments is better.
Further the inclusion of Alissa White-Gluz is hilarious.
Oh yeah she's modern if you consider some who's been singing since the mid 2000s as modern.
Agreed! His clean AND distorted vocals have been way better. Love it!
Part of me loves the original Spencer vox, but you are definitely right, it seems that he's definitely found himself vocally on their latest few releases.
I think he sucks. He sounds like 10 pound weakling. No balls, no presence, just whining. Periphery sounds so much better as a pure instrumental band.
@@NeonBlazeMusic I disagree, but fair enough. The bulb archives exist for a reason
I also think that Jari Mäenpää of Wintersun deserves a mention as well
Yannis Papadopoulos, currently singing for Beast In Black, he is just phenomenal!! Check out "Damned For All Time" by Sacred Outcry, one of my favourite albums of 2020 (epic metal at its peak). Check out his work with Wardrum and Warrior Path as well and of course Beast In Black.
Warrior Path's 2021 album features Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon, anyone?). Incredible work there as well.
The Pretty Reckless in the bluesy hard rock vein...
Olof from Enforcer (first album 2008 so it's close to not being so modern but come on, it's Enforcer).
In general, the New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal is primarily my go to place for new releases. I can't stand bands with 8-string guitars noodling around making noise and lifeless vocals... Metal is about riffs and vocals that get you pumped, not about getting a degree in advanced math. Enforcer, Screamer, Night Demon, Sacred Outcry, Eternal Champion, Visigoth, Traveler, Riot City, Haunt etc. etc. they are carrying the classic metal torch and the mainstream metal media do not help those guys at all.
Spencer from Ice nine kills, Courtney from Spiritbox, Joe from Gojira, Ronnie from Born of Osiris are also great vocalists. I think they should've been mentioned.
I think you meant Joe from Gojira 😉
@@NoTaMu yeah...😅
Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox has an unbelievable voice. Her clean voice control is astounding and has no issue just letting her voice flow from note to note, high and low. She's got quite a low voice that serves the music brilliantly.
Her scream vocals I would argue are some of the most unique and harshest among modern metal. Her harsh vocal range isn't ridiculous but you can really feel her lows and her highs really scratch your ears.
The Mara Effect, Hurt You and Blessed Be are some of their best songs when it comes to Courtney's vocals.
GLEN U GOTTA CHECK EM OUT AND LET US KNOW WHAT U THINK!
YESS
Yesss
I’m surprise that you didn’t mention Burning Witches from Switzerland. They are on tour in the States right now. Those ladies are bringing back melody back to metal with a hint of guttural vocals, and great metal playing. Also, I realize Plush is hard rock, but Moriah’s voice is stronger than most singers on this list, and the musicianship in Plush is getting them recognize from all corners of the rock world. A lot of these singers on this list are proof why metal is still not seeing the highs that metal saw in the 80’s.
Great list, but I need to add some names.
Noora Louhimo - Battle Beast
Nitte Vallo - Battle Beast
Attila Dorn - Powerwolf
Yannis Papadopoulos - Beast in Black
Zaher Zorgatti - Myrath
Angus McFife - Gloryhammer
George Neuhauser - Warkings
Melissa Bony - Ad Infinitum and many others, plus guest appearances everywhere
8:36 Shout out to Siegfried Song. He's great! He takes that Dio-Jorn vocal drive and takes it to a new level.
You named some great singers there, but i really miss one: Floor Jansen. She can do operatic, oldschool metalscreams, grunts and everything in between. One of the most versatile vocalists i have ever seen. Check out her rendition of Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013 and you'll agree.
I second this, She’s just Awsome
Can confirm, recently saw Nightwish with Beast in Black, another great vocalist, not sure if you could call them "Modern". I would have no trouble filling out a list of great vocalists but a lot aren't really new, they've been slogging it out in bands for years (or decades) and are still relatively unknown. It amazes me that someone like Jorn Lande, as much talent as he has and as many projects that he has done, can go practically unnoticed on this side of the earth.
while I agree that she's incredible, nightwish isn't really a 'modern' band at this point. they've been around for almost 30 years.
@@StuartHetzler yeah but she deserved one of those honerable mentions at least i think
She is amazing, but she is not a "new" vocalist, she is/was on several projects since the 90s i believr
Nice video! Can you do the same with other modern metal bands that are worth listening to?
This time Glenn’s mock of the growl sounded pretty good lol
I wonder if hes getting so much practice in his videos that he may surpass all of our favorite screamers lol
I gasped when Devin Townsend was disqualified. But the reason for it, absolutely legitimate lol.
Really glad you put this video out. Thanks much for sharing amazing vocalists with everyone.
If I were to add one to the list, I'd offer Unleash the Archers front woman, Brittney Hayes. Her range is unreal, and he technique is incredible.
Hey Glenn, how will I know my mix is ready for sure. Ive heard it in the car, earphones, headphones, and on moniters and some things seem to change slightly here and I'm not sure if I need to change that or if it the equalization of the speakers. Help please :( thanks Glenn.
I've seen Jinjer live just before the 1st lockdown. I almost cried. It was so good.
Glen, I have trouble making out the names / channels you recommended. Could your editors add a text box on screen when you mention them?
GeNNnnn!
are you O.K.mate?
an entire vid on metal singers including high voices and not once did you mention Rob Halford.
thought you'd drop it in around Witherfall somewhere
Yes!!! Love this. Im so ready for some talented musicians. Keep these coming
Currently, my bandmate and I are working on mixing and mastering some 10 songs we already have recorded. But once we are done, we are pretty much only able to release them as instrumentals cause we are looking for something that is not screaming or death metal growling or whatever. But not necessarily power metal vocals either. Something with an edge, but compliments musically. Wish we had those type of vocals in our own throats 🤣
Another great vocalist is Tommy Rogers of Between the Buried and Me. He reminds me of Mike Patton.
Not surprised that Alissa white-gluz is on here. When I first heard her I was blown away by the Incredible talent! While we are talking about melodic death metal, what's your opinion on Alexi laihos vocals?
Gleeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnn! If you liked The Hu’s Mongolian throat singing check Hangai. A folk group doing a revival of traditional throat singing. Love it. Always thought it would sound cool to hear it in metal. Now I see this vid. Awesome.
I think there are a lot more very talented vocalists, but regrettably these bands are not so well known.
Just to name a few, you have John Carbone from Moon Tooth; Andrew Mailloux from Rishloo; Ian Kenny from Karnivool; Jonny Hawkins from Nothing More; Brent Mills from Greyhaven; and Jim Grey from Caligula's Horse.
When i look for inspiration for vocals, i always look towards the nu metal era. While also being filled with unhealthy techniques (*cough cough* Slipknot), it also has some of the most unique vocalists out there. Here are some of my personal favorites that you might not have heard.
Mudvayne’s Chad Grey has one of the most bizzare voices, just listen to their song (k)now F(orever).
Mushroomhead’s J Mann has one of the most clear voices for how distorted it is, check out Sun Doesn’t Rise.
Dez Fafara of Coal Chamber vocals are great because they’re only really there to serve the rest of the song, check out Loco by them.
Dry Kill Logic’s Cliff Rigano has a great voice for sometimes trying something that’s kinda goofy, check out their song Rot.
Sevendust’s Lajon Witherspoon has an amazingly powerful and distinct clean voice, listen to their song Black.
I know i’m probably gonna get a fuckton of hate for listening to nu metal but i think it’s important to listen to other genres to influence your work, especially other heavy ones.
Nu Metal is great and I say that as someone who mostly listens to Deathmetal/Deathcore.
I 100% agree. All great vocalists, but are they technically modern? When I think of modern I think of bands that started in 2010 and after
@@d1l4te43 Yeah i know they aren’t modern, i was trying to give other suggestions that i like to use personally. I am a big fan of vocals in nu metal and thought it might be good if people were looking for vocal inspiration.
@@pen_bapp In that case, I completely agree. I love me some nu metal
An honorable mention in this video would be Vessel from Sleep Token. Sure, maybe their music doesn't count as metal, but they do have some heavier tracks too like The Offering, Gods, Hypnosis, Like That, and Higher. His vocal style focuses more on the clean singing rather than screams, so he's no cookie cutter monster vocalist. His voice has power, but also has that delicate touch to it mixed in with such a unique timbre.
In comparison to all of the vocalists mentioned, he may not sound as powerful and strong, but he sings so well and sounds so good doing it too.
Worship.
All fantastic singers Glenn, no doubt about it! As much as I love hearing someone in total control, there is something about hearing a singer in the danger zone right on the edge of what he/she can do. That can bring an element of excitement. Remember seeing Warren Huart interview The Offspring’s producer who among other song made them change the key of Pretty fly for a white guy right to the edge of what Dexter could do to bring that excitement. Of course there are some factors involved such as the fact Dexter is a great singer in the first place and it served the song, which is maybe not metal, but rock n roll as f**k. Leprous would sound extremely weird with vocals on the edge in that same way.
Do a video (probably need a two parter) on how the ladies are carrying power metal on the vocal AND often instrumentalist fronts.
One of the most extreme female voices is Karyn Crisis, it's mind blowing.
She is awesome, and def pretty damn unique.
You should have put Ross Jennings of Haken on that list. His voice kinda completely flips what it means to be a metal vocalist.
Stoked to see Mary on the list! Love those damn Helion Prime kids something fierce.
whats with the low end on the HU, I have checked them out already and the low end was not a problem ?
Alex the terrible from slaughter to prevail is an absolute powerhouse, brings his growls from his toes
For a couple of more underground ones but still great bands hopefully on the rise: Tom Templar of Green Lung manages to get the old Sabbath Ozzy vocals but he's actually a good singer, Jake Rogers of Visigoth has a great voice, Gabe Franco from Unto Others has vocals reminiscent of peter steele and old school new wave bands.
my honourable mentions would be sarabeth linden from Tower, Dan Cleary from Stryker and Danny foster from Eliminator.
There's so much more new metal stuff that isn't just djent, prog, -core stuff out there that's fantastic
+2 for Green Lung and Visigoth. I'd also add Mike Scheidt from YOB to that list
Green Lung is soon goooddd
Tesseract!! Milton Keynes on SMG!! Nicely done Glenn.
Thanks for introducing me to the amazing voice of Daniel Tompkins! What is the best way to donate to your studio without a song? Thanks.
Oh no! The Hu were in town last week and I missed it! Glenn, I blame YOU for my ignorance!
I respect your opinion, Sir. Personally, I would always go for the cookie monster
seen Witherfall about a month ago and arch enemy for third time last week and can say both are phenomenal live
Picked up tickets to see The Hu with Megadeth and 5fdp this fall. Can't wait
I knew Leprous and I didn't like their music at first, BUT I had the chance to see them a few times during the Coal tour and... fuuuuuuuuuckkkk, I started to like the band. The other members are top level musicians, and yes, the guy can sure sing!! :)
I love your videos Glenn, keep 'em coming!
That's cool Arch Enemy's og singer stepped back to manage when she recognized the new talent. How many of us could check our ego like that? Respect.
I agree with all of your choices, the only one who I am missing on this list is Andy Cizek. I don‘t think there is any male vocalist with that same range of vocals with cleans and gutturals combined except for Spencer maybe. I‘m so incredibly happy that he is with Monuments now!
Another amazing modern metal female singer is Noora Louhimo from the band Battle Beast. She has her own thing (a combination of Dio + Zetro) in her older material and I'm just happy to see modern band still pushing the limits of what metal has to offer. \m/
Noora kicks so much ass. Nitte Valo is excellent too, I keep hoping for her to find another good, stable band.
very cool video. liked it alot!
Maybe one to check out is Will Ramos for Lorna Shore.
Ugh, I wish you had brought up Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers! She's one of my favorite singers and I would have loved to hear your thoughts on her style.
This video is a big deal to me, I didn't realize arch enemies previous singer had become their manager, that makes me really happy that shes still a part of it.
Greg Puciato is also worth mentioning. Not only the Dillinger stuff but the stuff he did with black queen and killer be killed are all equally good, if not in entirely separate genres.
There is an amazing traditional heavy metal scene going on in the US and Canada. Check out bands like Riot City, Traveler, Smoulder or Gatekeeper. Good stuff.
This.
fantastic bands!
Visigoth, Night Demon, Eternal Champion are pretty similar as well.
The swedes aren't doing too bad either with the likes of Enforcer, Ambush and Screamer
@@jpbguitar6470 oh yeah, there's way more where that came from. It's beautiful to see a whole scene emerging inspired by sounds of canonic metal gods like Judas Priest, and the cult underground classics like Manilla Road or Omen alike.
I totally agree on female vocalists and what is "modern" metal. I loved old school bands (including Europe) and three of my current favorite bands (four, if you count that one has members from another) are Temperance / Visions of Atlantis (male lead is the same on both bands) , Ad Infininitum (Melssia Bonny), and Frozen Crown (lead lady I remember her nickname is "Jade"). All of these ladies have excellent and beautiful ranges and can do both harsh and clean vocals and apparently in Ms. Bonny's case, she learned the proper technique so as to not screw her clean side 🙂. I discovered these three bands on UA-cam watching Scarlett and Napalm channels.
GLEEENNNNN!!! How do I deal with controlling band mates? My childhood friend is my bandmate. He is never willing to pursue ANY of my ideas and song structures. Even when I say the words "let's try this or how about...." he looks at me like a kid sitting at an adult table. He'll make changes to songs only when HE deems appropriate. He is the all holy gate keeper. He won't even let me ATTEMPT to record my own guitar parts in the studio and says "this is the industry standard". I'm only allowed to play my solos. I'd understand if the parts are super complex songs that need the EXACT same hands playing it . I'd also understand if I tried to record and didn't practice. (He isn't exactly doing it in one take) They're just chugs and chords. They're ALSO DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE PARTS. Either he believes I can't play a clean take or he just wants all of the glory. How hard can it be with a fret wrap and half of the strings taped down? It's like he's pushing me out of the way to catch a fly ball in the outfield.
I'd have to say, about 5-6 out of the 9 of the vocalists you mentioned are not Hidden Gems at all, they're very well known within the Modern Metal Community.
anywho here are some other Modern Metal Vocalists I'd suggest checking out also...
Landmvrks vocalist is insanely versatile and when you listen to him live, he's pretty much identical, if not better than studio recordings, he's like if chester bennington, Eminem, bryan garris... and... just any good deathcore vocalist had a baby.
Will Ramos has insane control and tone with his harsh vocals. can make them fairly melodic, and also has a nice clean voice as seen in his cover of sleeptoken.
justin bonitz, vocalist of Tallah, great live and very versitile in his style and how he brings an almost theatrical style to his performances. if a disney villain had babies with chester bennington and a good deathcore vocalist
Courtney from Spiritbox, great Vocalist, prefer her one take live performances over the studio recordings....
Marcus from Northlane is also a great vocalist live.
Andy Cizek of Monuments... great vocalist
Alex Terrible of Slaughter To Prevail... just a natural born monster... his vocals are just a gift from... well... I'm not sure if they're a gift from god or the devil... maybe they both play a part in this man's talents.
Mikaela... of... well the band... MIKAELA... She's a great female vocalist, not a very well known Band but I'd recommend checking out some of their stuff, I think they could have some potential in the future if they keep at it and discover their sound. it's a little rough around the edges but I like it.
Add in Joe Bad from Fit For An Autopsy and Matt Honeycutt from Kublai Khan. Those guys are unreal live vocalists.
You should definitely check out Asger Mygind from the danish band VOLA!
I waited a few hours to see if one of the more popular kids would cough up the obvious, but nobody has yet...so.
Dino Jelusick. I wish we could see a lot more of him - he has worked with TSO, a project with George Lynch (Dirty Shirley), and a lot of little solo clips as well as his band Animal Drive with appearances here and there. But the guy can channel Coverdale to Dio without breaking a sweat. Check out the cover of "Stormbringer" he did with Hoekstra, Donati, and Franklin. Insanelicious...
Also a nod to Andrew from Shokran...
Beast In Black and Nightwish both have not only incredibly talented singers but they're recognizable too. They both are fantastic.
Someone should invite Glenn to fo see them on their american tour
Nightwish is awesome...but have been around since the mid 90s... not really 'modern'
@@ericstearns170 Floor Jansen only joined in the 2010's
@@Memu_ Yeah but she did other stuff before then. Again, not really 'modern' but doubt, phenomenal.
Said it before, will say it again. Justin Bonitz from Tallah, and Kyo from Dir En Grey.
I honestly think there could easily be a part 2.
I agree with both, although Kyo isn't precisely a newcomer. He's been on the scene with Dir en grey for 20+ years.
the no mention of Sam Carter, Noah Sebastian or Courtney LaPlante is criminal.
John Carbone from Moon Tooth is definitely a guy to follow, that band is a real breath of fresh air in the newer generation of metal.
Lots of riffs, sweet melodies and groovy as all Hell. Nice uplifting feel to it too without getting anywhere near cheesy which I feel a lot
of "happier" metal tend to get.
Justin Bonitz from the band Tallah also has some pipes on him.
Justin from Hungry Lights (currently in a band with Mike Portnoy's son) is just incredible. Check out his 10 screaming techniques video. Epic!
I remember him killing it in Jared's vocals contest years ago
@@DavidNwokoye yep. So versatile! And he is also theatrical. The whole frontman package.
Some more vocalists for ya so it's not so hard to find good metal singers:

Tommy Johansson (Reinxeed, Majestica)
Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast, Laurenne Louhimo)

Brittney Slayes (Unleash the Archers)
