  • Welcome back to Tacky Tablecloths! This week we discuss Xenos, a religious organization in the Central Ohio area which has come under the scrutiny of abuse allegations. This is a break from our normal lighthearted format to focus on a more serious subject that we feel very passionately about.
If you or anyone you know is(was) a member of Xenos and wish to tell your story please feel free to contact:

Thank you so much for doing this. I was there for three years and what I went through was definitely emotional abuse. I can't think of one conversation with the woman who was supposed to disciple me where I didn't walk away feeling worse about myself. I've struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life and the people there told me that was satan trying to take over me. When I missed prayer meetings to study or go to work, I was shamed. I was also shamed for trying to spend time with people outside the church. When I confided with girls in the group about a traumatic experience, they pressured me to tell the entire group. I have so many stories and would be happy to talk.

I went there in 83 and 84,i was pressured daily to recruit new members.I had to "confess" my sins to our mens group leader twice a week

Your sins are between you and God, men cannot forgive you from them... Only God/Jesus. Xenos came knocking on the door but I smelled Satan when I opened that door up.

I lost 2 Very close friends to Xenos. The one "was" gay but Xenos sent him to a camp that made him ungay, now he is married to another Xenoid, I don't know if he is happy or just living a big lie...

I don’t have any mind blowing stories but I definitely have stories. Mostly related to how I started attending, my home church group specifically, weird vibes with the central teachings, their living situations and then the beach trips. Just reach out if you’re interested in discussing

I was a member of the campus group back in the 90s A few quick things: They do keep outreach records. There was someone whose task it was at every CT to write down who was attending. All the privacy breaching they hand-wave off as "Accountability in your walk". As to why you let people do this, they preach "Giving everything over to God" "Letting God take over" etc. As for ministry houses, it was 2-3 people per room, and most were not owned by the church. There was one that was, and in the late 90s like 13 guys were paying $250 each a month in rent and utilities, which is probably enough to rent a house on campus now.
On the church money thing, one specific point I have seen many times in rebuttal to them being a cult is that the leadership "Does not drive nice cars or have big houses" Yet they do live a comfortable life on the church dime. A walkaway friend of mine likened it to a family business.
I was part of the group for a few years, and if you have any question about their theology or methods send me a message

That's a lie they have admitted giving money to buy houses for their ministry houses they run and control those houses you are completely brainwashed.

Hmm....the leaders houses I was at were pretty extravagant. Not saying that's wrong just saying seemed pretty upscale too me.

I recently left my job at a larger Columbus church and it would be considered mainstream...in fact, the pastor had a TV show recently on Sunday mornings and a LOT of "cultish" things happen there too. And the pastor and his wife have become wealthy in the process. They keep insane records on people (all about getting people in the door and money in the coffers). I have continued to maintain my relationship with God despite of the treatment there and the "production" schedules I've been through. That mega church stuff isn't God either. IMHO

Thanks for doing this story. I got such a weird vibe from Xenos. Never even came close to attending, but Christ the guys I knew who were associated with Xenos were like robots and my only visit to their church gave me definite Scientology vibes.

Xenos means "aliens", the Greek word for a sojourner. Hebrews 11 uses this word. It's not that weird if we believe followers of Jesus are going to heaven

While people in every church (every human) can and do make mistakes, this video is not a accurate portrayal of the church, Xenos. I've gone to Xenos for the last 9 years -- left for a period and come back -- and I can tell you that the people there are working to understand the Bible, teach it to one another and live it out. I have friends that are outside of the church and I have friends that are inside the church. It's really unfortunate and sad that there are people who have been hurt, however I think that's just humans, as we all make mistakes. I think there have been times when some of the younger groups like high school and college have tended to act in a more controlling nature with good intentions but I know this has been changing over the years. I also know that it's not the only good church out there and that there are many churches where people are learning the Bible and following God. There are many well now well-known Christian authors and speakers who support what Xenos is doing and who partner with Xenos so that would be saying that people like Lee Strobel, John Lennox or Ravi Zacharias are/were cult supporters, which is obviously not true.

When there are over 700 personal accounts of folks that have been abused by this organization, it's not just mistakes, and it's still happening.

Dr. John M. Perkins, Dwight Smith, J. Warner Wallace, Randy Newman, seeJesus Ministries, John Lennox. You will now need to call all these authors cult supporters as well. Highly renowned authors that support this "cult" seems like you guys have done very little real research.

That's actually a logical fallacy, called "appeal to authority." J Warner Wallace has spoken at Xenos, he is also well respected among many Christians. Saying that he and others who spoke there are cult supporters is the problem. Just because he spoke at that church doesn't mean he or the others support all the decisions Xenos makes. All of the speakers would have to be well informed of all of the small details of how Xenos operates then they'd have to put their name behind the church for them to be supporters. Many churches and organizations have these speakers come. That does not mean the speakers support everything that the church does. J Warner Wallace also spoke at OSU, that doesn't mean he is a supporter at OSU, nor does it mean that they can take him speaking there as a stamp of approval from him. Nor does that mean you can dismiss complaints about OSU by saying that can't be true because these well regarded Christians have spoken there. Unfortunately, your argument that because these people have spoken there, that means Xenos doesn't have the real issues they are being accused of, doesn't hold water. Xenos may or may not be a cult, but your statement isn't logically sound.
