Nathan your random reactions and comments are priceless “all kinds of bugs in here”, lol! Your videos are helping so many people, I commend your willingness to show others how to fix these cars, you’re saving people a lot of time and money in the process as well as making all of us more knowledgeable so we don’t get ripped off by a mechanic who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Thanks Nathan for the help. This video came in very handy as I just had the starter go on my 2010 528i. Great explanations, super helpful. I replaced the intake gaskets, but obviously that's an optional deal. The scariest part was the E14 torx and using a ratcheting 12pt box end SAE wrench to remove the top starter bolt, but it does work. Many thanks.
Great video. Thanks! Came at an appropriate time for me. Had to replace my starter on my E60/BMW 528i. Nice to know that the job isn't too bad. Nice improvisation with the tripod. A true mechanic/engineer!
Thanks, Nathan! Your video was very helpful! I just did this job on our 2010 528i today and appreciate the step by step. I had a problem getting the lower unit with the multiple wires off so I didn't take the.throttle body out completely but I was able to maneuver around it and replace the starter. Cranked up like a champ after reassembly and although a few lights, ABS, brake etc popped up, they all cleared afer a couple of miles of driving.
Great video still after years, lol. Having a hell of a time with the wife’s e60 having trouble/not wanting to start randomly, replaced battery and still persist, your play by play video will make this job very easy(easier 😊) thank you!
To make sure it is the starter you can get a screw driver down between the manifold to short the starter solenoid. You can also with a bit of difficulty pull the plug off the starter and plug in an external wire to check that power is getting output to the solenoid. Its alot of work to replace and you don't want to be guessing. The starter in my 2008 530i Aussie delivery is not like a tradition starter. It has a special gear setup in there and it WILL wear out and can't really recondition that easily. Mine failed at 160000km but was showing signs at 120000km when I bought it. The sign is that you will need to reset the clock on the dash frequently. I had even replaced my battery at 130000km thinking that the starter is struggling. Once the starter was replaced with a genuine BOSCH starter, all was good, no more cancelled time. If you have this helical gear type starter (which I think is the same as yours, older models have tradition design starter, direct drive), take it apart and you will see why they don't last that long.
I have a 2006 M5 and am diagnosing for a bad starter, I replaced the battery yesterday, but today it wouldn't start again. My clock DID get slow by a couple days over the past few months, so thank's for that detail!
Thanks just did this myself after watching this video a few times, saved me a lot of money... I have an e61 and the manifold didn't wanna come out so easy, I just moved it to the side and took the starter out... thanks nate
My 2004 X5 ,4.4 won't crank or start. I put new battery in a week ago , all the lights work fine (dashboard, headlights etc) last time I drove was leaking oil really bad from the right side , and next day did not start. I check / test all the Fuses , relays , all seem to be fine. Had mechanic look at it and was only cranking when he tried to manually start. Any clue? Please help. Thanks . Francisco Just wondering if is there anything I need to look at .
Hey Nathan I have a 2007 bmw 750li i saw on UA-cam how to hook up a after market stereo I took the remote wire and hook it to the brake pedal switch and a the power wire to the cigarette lighter in the center console I did that now my car just cranks but wont start what went wrong plus the aftermarket amp remote wire was also connected to the brake pedal switch wire
how did you disconnect and connect the wiring harness bracket which was attached to the manifold cover with 2 bolts ? I was having a hard to disconnect it and hesitating how to reconnect . was so so so hard with small space..
Nathan I had mine done. Everything that was replaced on my E60 was the starter, starter bolts, intake manifold gasket, crank position sensor, position sensor o ring. On my invoice they had to replace the the crank shaft sensor. I remember the guy tell me since I was trying to start the car with a bad starter it made it go bad
They use aluminum bolts that’s why they replaced them one time bolts and gasket is another thing they do also. That’s what I did with my lady’s 325i new battery and starter runs like a champ
If someone didn't know any better, they might get the idea that BMWs suck a bit. As you mentioned a few times, it's a good thing you don't try to tow vehicles a few hundred miles with the X3s and X5s. You'd be stuck on the side of the interstate every other month and have to mortgage your property.
Nice job explaining all steps. Well done ! I know you said it was easy, I have to say it doesn’t look all that easy but not all that hard either. Thanks for sharing.
How do you know if the starter is out? Does it say in the OBD? I have had my stupid 2004 525i just not start all new battery and the car functions normally but no sound at all when trying to turn it on.
Aye what u use on the back bolt a flex wretch 6point or what cause a lot of people use different wrenches or Ratchet with a Etorx just wondering don’t wanna strip that bolt
Another fine job by Nathan! Thanks for doing the voiceovers, I think they allow you to give more details. My only suggestion is to get into how to undo those damn electrical connectors, they drive me nuts and I'm always paranoid I'm going to break one. Do you advise changing out the throttle body gasket while you've go it all apart?
My favorite comment from Nathan “hell, I can’t remember “, lol dude you have so much BMW information crammed in there, it may be hard to recall at times but I’m certain that the information is in there waiting to be found, lol.
Hey love the channel! I got a auto 2002 e39 540i. It shakes bad when I put it in reverse and also shakes bad at stops, doesn’t shake when I put in neutral. It is also rough when I first take off sometimes. Any ideas? I can email video if anyone wants to help!

Seems a little blunt, I try to do a. little of everything on this channel, if I do only hard core diy videos only people will watch that has that particular problem like this video , also I built this channel on e39 and e46 videos, now hat I changed to e60 and e90 all of those people will not watch the new videos because they don't own those cars, that being said 94% of my subscribers are not watching the videos, it has been around that number since i started this channel, youtube will not send out notification and will not recommend my videos at all, so that is where we are at with this according to youtube analytics

I wasn't looking for an E-60 but when it popped up at the price it did + condition, I bought it. Took a major gamble, it paid. Had a breathalyzer in it when I bought it. Took it all out started right up had a seized alternator. Fixed that, starter went! The life of Bmw's! I wouldn't have bought another E-39 after the first had it not been for you & your channel Nathan!@NathansBMWWorkshop
That can be done with out removing all that bull shit only the stabilizer bar and that’s all just a12 point 10 flex wrench and patience if took me 45 minutes to do it
I lifted the intake instead of removing it completely. By the way: Alu bolts should be replaced. $64 for a starter. Must be quality stuff :) I just bought a Bosch. Not that expensive.
Beware if you bought a Bosch reman we have had bad issues with those, rebuilt with china parts, sellers on ebay sell them for $150 , the problem is they will not tell you its a reman, the starter bolts won't need to be replaced no matter of what bmw says, all the bell housing bolts and such are all aluminum , if you replaced them all to do a engine swap you would have to literally replace 100 bolts
@@NathansBMWWorkshop I have a Bosch starter new from a reputable parts shop in Germany, so I think I'm good. Thanks for warning. These bolts are recommended by BMW to replace. Offcourse you can re-use them. Most of the time it will be fine, but I'm not taking chances. On the belt tensioner it's more important, because the bolt will stretch there (way higher torque). No way you should re-use those.
because i recently ordered a starter from rockauto for e90 bmw 330i and when i wanted to install it the holes were off like a cm and screws wouldn't go in so i had to return it. now i ordered the one u got.

I got a rough idle after performing this job, any ideas on what could be the cause?

Did you figure this out? having same problem on a 335i...cant move it for weeks!
Changed the starter and it was fine.
Issue with the battery was my fault. I didn’t tighten it 😂
How's the $64 starter working out for ya. Trying to get one for my e90
Never had a issue, used several of them in different cars with no problems
I just ordered the DB Electrical starter thank you for the advice
"Really not that hard" proceeds to disassemble the top of the engine! Lol. Starter has arrived I'm heading out to do it
Anyone know where to find the 6 point torx socket for the rear aluminum bolt?
Having a nice extendable camera mount that was mounted on a ceiling track would be good for making these types of videos.
Look at Amazon or B&H Photo and maybe a mic boom might work for you with an adapter to mount camera to it instead of a mic
