That different in color could just be that the elgato defaults to limited color output since that's default for TVs (16-235) and the Razer defaults to 0-255 since thats the default for PCs. Or it could be the other way around, you can probably change this in the settings for the capture card.
4 years later we are met with software that creates a crackling audio sound that they are completely aware of, and know how to fix it but don't.... Never buy a razer capture card now or in the future.
I love how creative your intros have been in the last few videos :) It's great to see another competitor in the gaming industry coming in to compete with Elgato. There has always been Blackmagic, but they tailor more towards photogrophers and vloggers and not so much gamers. So I'm really excited to see the competitive push that will get both companies improving and lowering prices to some degree :)
The two problems with both of these cards (at least for me) are: 1- They capture and send video in YUV instead of RGB. This will ruin some of the color accuracy and make certain colors like red look absolutely horrible especially when outlined in black. 2- The video gets encoded and compressed twice. Once on the capture card and a second time with OBS and if you know anything about encoding and compression then you will understand why this is very bad for picture quality as it increases pixelation noticeably. I have been using AVer Media Live Gamer 4k for a while, and before that I tried the 4k one Elgato has but it wasn't perfect since it only allowed for YUV color format. AVer Media's can supply OBS with an RGB-formatted uncompressed video capture that can enhance the picture quality of the stream. I'd only recommend the capture cards in the video to someone on a tight budget or to someone that only has a laptop to stream from.
Primer7G you noted the cards encode twice: once on the card and again on one for the 1080 feed. I too would like to know if the dual processing is done through one channel (this reducing the quality between both) or if it has a separate processing unit to convert the original 4K content to 1080. If it’s the former then I feel it wouldn’t suit my needs. If it’s the latter then I’d rather just get a high quality 1080p capture card to handle my input. So yeah, more agreeing with your take and wanting to expand with a question if my own
@@seangodde5429 Oh, I'm sorry. I think I wasn't very clear with my original statement. What I meant is that when capturing a video from, say a PS4, the capture card will compress that video stream (using its onboard encoder) so it can be send via USB 3.0 to a streaming PC, then OBS that is running on that PC will compress/encode the video again before sending it to say Twitch causing the original video to be compressed twice in the process. An uncompressed video doesn't mean that it's of a "true" quality because you can have an uncompressed video that has its colors converted from RGB to YUV format (which is a more efficient color coding, but falls short while representing colors like red). Razer Ripsaw can capture uncompressed 1080p 60fps but that won't be in RGB format because of the technical limitations of the USB 3.0 port it uses (uncompressed RGB capture will require around 370 MB/s of bandwidth but USB 3.0 caps out at around 100 MB/s). So while the video itself won't be compressed i.e. chopped into blocks and encoded, the colors of it will be represented in a less accurate format. It's a tradeoff that only makes sense if you are on a budget or if you are technically limited to what you can use in terms of equipment. If you are seeking for best possible video capture for streaming/recording then what you want is a capture card that is capable of at least 1080p 60fps sRGB. Such option is common as a PCIe expansion card and I would recommend the AVer Media Live Gamer 4k if you have the $$$ to spare. You'll probably have to dig through the specs of the capture card you are buying if you want to be sure of what you will be getting. Sorry for the wall of text, but I tried to explain things to the best of my ability.

What about 1440p res? I’m going to assume it works since it’s less than 4K. so if I understand you correctly. I could SEND a 1440p signal from my main computer system to the capture card. That capture card would then capture and display that signal at 1080p60 (for instance.. in an OBS game capture scene) I don’t care so much about the passthrough portion. But if it where to pass through I assume it would pass through at 1440p 144hz?
Is there a way to fix that five frame delay in the Elgato capture card? My gameplay on OBS shows a few frames after my face cam and microphone. It’s a little annoying my reactions are always a little bit off on stream... any tips? Would you think the RAZER would fix this issue?

Only down side was sound wasn’t going through to SLOBS, but about a week later, it just started working. Must have been a compatibly issue and fixed with an update. I highly recommend it if you’re still gaming at 1080.
For the instant preview, how much latency did you notice between the Ripsaw HD and the original signal? I've got a super odd setup where I actually could use that being a reliable video source to play off of.
Hey. Nice video man. Just a quick question. Is there a way that you can record your ganeplay using nintendo switch without connecting it through PC/laptop.
That's great IF you have a 4K monitor and you like 4K graphics. 4K is sweet, don't get me wrong. But it's the frame rate that makes the difference in gaming, not the resolution. So it kinda depends on your use case and preference. I have a 4K monitor and, as with most of us who can't afford one of the newer higher Hz models, the fps is gonna be stuck at 60. I also have a 1080p 144Hz monitor. I gotta say that at 144 fps, seated about 2 feet from it, the 144Hz is buttery smooth and the difference isn't enough to forsake shooter precision for resolution. Now that said, that's with MY eyeballs. Your eyeballs will vary.
I bought a ripsaw because of this review and was coming back to read the comments to see if anyone had audio issues with it that maybe the elgato didn't have. There is no way from what i can tell to stream to pc and use obs with just the ripsaw. I am having to purchase $50 worth of cables just to get the audio there and 2 pc streaming isn't much better. I had to download voicemeeter to get that done and as far as i can tell there is no good way to set my voicemod up with my stream deck in this situation. In all the reviews I saw I never once saw anyone say that the audio was such a problem with capture cards...i wish i had stuck with one pc and remote play in many many ways.
Awesome video. Any chance you can test to see if the Ripsaw can be used with a 144hz screen? According to Razer, it can. I highly doubt it though. I want to game at 144hz, but stream at 720p/1080p.
for the color, you need to set the elgato to the proper output, by default the elgato is limited and not full. once you changed it full the colors work fine!

Razer has actually had a capture card for a couple years now, but they discontinued the original Ripsaw a little while ago, I'm guessing while they developed this. The first model was slightly more expensive at about $200, then dropping to $170 ish, but I digress. I've been using the original since it came out and couldn't be happier. It's easy to set up, doesn't require anything other than Razer Synapse and even the first Ripsaw had the same advantages as this one has with zero delays in the frames and really great color reproduction. I'm really looking forward to possibly replacing my first gen Ripsaw with this one. Good video regardless Harris, just thought I'd point this out for anyone out there wondering about Razer's past devices :-D
I'm still getting solid work out of my blackmagic intensity pro 4k. it doesn't strip HDCP or anything, but it's a great little internal workhorse for $200.

Win/win if you ask me. If you don't know what NDI is its a protocol that outputs your OBS preview over LAN (you need 1gbit) and then you can capture that in OBS on your second PC. I this setup to play in 3440x1440@100hz
@@daikar12 Twitch/UA-cam allow only 60Hz (FPS) upload for streams.
Hey Harris, can you do an update on reliability? How is the product working?
what if i have a ps4 slim that has only 720p... can i use this to make my video 4k?
Is it worth the extra $40 bucks to ship the razor and go for the hd60s+ ?
Razer website says it supports 1440p passthrough but doesn’t specify if you can pass 144hz for example, I assume no :(
Are there types of razer ripsaw or is it only one ?
I'm excited for new competition. As reliable as the El Gato's are, they've had no real incentive to push their boundaries recently. I'm hoping we'll see new features and even more price drops rolling out soon.
What’s the bitrate difference between the two?
Thank you for the video. I have the old Ripsaw for more then a year now. works like charm! So it is reliable! is it worth it to upgrade tho?
What's the difference if you use obs?
can you give us a tutorial on how to set the razer ripsaw up? I'm having issues and a lot of people aren't doing a very good job of explaining set up in UA-cam videos
Do you still need a chat link for PS4 on the Razer?
So new NVENC is out. Tried it out with same bitrate and what not. Absolute trash for my quality and now i'm seeming to have more issues than before with x264. I have a fairly beast pc, i'm not understanding what went wrong.
Can we use this on a PC when we stream? How would be set it up?
hey does the razer capture card have 1080p240hz passthrough?
I run the OG Ripsaw and have since it came out. Works really nicely, happy to hear they've upgraded
If you need someone to do some long term, thorough testing on the new ripsaw I'd be happy to help Kappa
Your channel has helped me a lot with starting out streaming. What would you choose the elgato hd60s+ or Razer?
Elgato has a better software but razer prob better. Depends on what youre doing.
Id go with hd60s+
had a question, just bought the ripsaw, but getting pixilation, what settings do you recommend? im recording dirt rally 2.0 on a xbox one s. thanks
I’ve never been so happy to miss out on a prime day deal in my life! Good thing I snagged the stream deck instead of the HD60S. Thank you Razer!! And thank you for the amazing video!
Dude your production value is amazing
can i use this on pc? for a dual thing, play on desktop, record on laptop
definitely
Do you know if game chat is picked up on a game like Fortnite with this capture card?
Dude what is your twitch channel
Do you have a link to the 4k splitter. Or one you recommend?? Thanks
What about streaming party chat on xbox? Elgato needs the chat link cable. What does this need? 0.o
Can I use this more my Canon m200 or should I stick with the cam link can't decided which one to get
Does this ripsaw hd will make my FPS stable? If I stream with this device?
ur game fps or ur stream fps , both
How does the razer hd hold up compared to the elgato hd60s+?
Do you recommend to by this or elgato?
I'm still getting solid work out of my blackmagic intensity pro 4k. it doesn't strip HDCP or anything, but it's a great little internal workhorse for $200.
There are no ports for a usb mic + usb headset right? How do you suggest i connect my mic + headset to both pc's?
So is this a downgrade from a 4k60 pro? My 4k60 pro is giving me issues with signal loss so I'm looking for something to replace it with.
