Isn't it obvious that you need German in Germany? 😮
They're globalists they don't respect nationalities or culture. Only the manufactured ones🏳️🌈
Not for Americans or maybe some Britons, apparently 😉
@@goldflo91 yeah I know. But still I find it ignorant and impolite to expect people to speak everywhere 🤷♀️
@@cheenumama2079 And pretty rude and arrogant, as they think they're the center of the world and their own media help them in keeping such an attitude then they go abroad
But some French people too, expect locals to speak French when they go abroad, even if they're not as powerful as the USA and UK. Why 😉 ?
@@goldflo91 i guess bec france had quite a lot colonies as well 🤷♀️
I‘m always surprised that people who move into a foreign country are not trying to learn a bit of the language beforehand. It’s horribly impolite to expect everyone to speak English.
If only you could "learn" languages like Neo "learns" martial arts in the first Matrix movie ... 🙏🙏🙏
I suppose it depends yk like in Ireland you literally don’t need Irish cus nobody speaks it. It’s only on road signs and that’s about it. Ig the stereotype for Berlin is that majority of ppl speak English so u really don’t need German
@@Farheeeennn But it’s not polite to move somewhere without even trying to learn at least a bit of the language.
@@Farheeeennnonly because i am able to speak in english doesnt mean im confident in doing so. Im better at writing and Reading&listening comprehension.
I sooo agree with you
Why would anyone be surprised that it is helpful to know the native language in daily life?
Is English your first language?
@@lestefani9517 No, I live in Germany, so german ist my first language. When travelling outside Germany (or Austria / Switzerland), I don't expect anyone to speak german.
@@insulanerin7601Yet 80% of Germans do expect to speak German outside Germany. I see it every time I travel.
She said this because Berlin is praised as very English-friendly and a lot of people move here after recommendations of friends who get around well with only english. Those are the people who rack up a lot of debt because they can’t read the german letters to pay Rundfunkbeitrag and stuff like that tho lol. She’s basically saying don’t rely on those reports and actually learn some german, because you do actually need it.
because germans are educated and speak english
I really dislike how she framed the 1st one.
It's not just "something you'll need if you move to Germany".
Learning a country's lamguage is the absolute bare minimum if you want to move there. Don't expect applause for learning the language of the country you live in. Except, expect ridicule for not wanting to learn it.
You’d be surprised how many people move abroad with no intentions of learning their language
its typical ignorance. Everybody waited for her and you have to speak english ...
Depending on your job (e. g. R&D, academics and higher management) you might have to move and switch countries faster than you can learn languages. Other people might have learning disabilities. Don't needlessly assume malice or laziness.
@@gehirndoper Doesn't matter, if you move to a country the absolute bare minimum is to learn the language. No excuses.
Its good to TRY to learn the local language, and get to a certain degree of fluency - but most languages are not as easy as German for English natives. (Both are western germanic languages of the Indo-European family)
As a native of English, try French or Russian (non-Germanic, but still Indo-European family), or, if you are *really* overconfident:
Finnish or Hungarian (Uralic languages) , or some Asian languages
- you will realise that only a few people are gifted or dedicated enough to "learn a language" past their teenage years.
(I am a native Hungarian with German as second and English as third language)
OMG in germany they speak german.
I didn't know that, I thought they spoke Japanese
I thought they spoke American 😔
😂😂😂😂😂@@sundayznostalgianightz6510
I don't like nahtzi Germany
Honestly as someone from Berlin I get so annoyed with all of the Brits Aussies and Americans living there not making a SINGLE effort to learn German. I can’t speak German going to most of my favorite cafes or stores in Berlin cause they all don’t speak German. That’s kind of crazy in the capital city of my home country. It’s great that Berlin is so international don’t get me wrong. The thing is that there is zero effort, they don’t even say danke or hallo which is the least I would do if I wouldn’t know the language working in a different country. The thing is, it’s only Brits, Americans and aussies who act this entitled expecting everyone to speak their language in a German city. Everyone else from every other country learns and has to learn the language and then they get ridiculed or people are racist against them because they don’t speak good enough German, when they are actually trying( and English is also something they have to learn so speaking English for them is already harder). I hate this white double standard and the entitlement of these English speaking people compared to people from all other countries coming here.
This is so freakin‘ true.
yep and thats the reason why many germans are not into these persons. its a big lack of cultural exchange and ignorance.
No it's not - it's also Spanish, Itallian, French - bascially western/sounthern Europeans who expect that because it's EU it's their city anyways... there are lots. But I do agree with you.
Thats why no one likes/wants them in Berlin.
"You need to be able to speak german in Germany"
My son is German but studied in the Netherlands. The first thing he did was learning dutch! It shows respect and makes life so much easier! Meanwhile he speaks dutch fluently 😊
Heel goed! DOEI!
Wait, you need to speak the native language in a new country? 😮
not really. if the people are educated (high school) they will speak english
@@loganfignewton Ah so speaking english means to be educated? So the whole world needs to be educated to speak english? 😂
@@loganfignewton what about educate on your own to speak the language the nation you moving into? Just a thought
@@PETRiCH0R030 Yes, to speak English is to be educated if you don't grow up in an English speaking country. Germans are taught English in school from 1st grade to 12th grade. Students in America are not taught German as standard curriculum.
Most important thing to know before moving to Berlin: don’t move there.
Why? No hate a just a asking
@@lenarodecka-df9bu because it is stupidly expensive, the people there are like parisians and you'll have a better time in other parts of germany also no good football
@@ihatemotionblur_3255 oh ok
Berlin is - from a cultural point of view - just a tiny part of Germany. There are some things to see as a tourist, but much more and older things in the rest of Germany. The oldest buildings are just from the 13th century. Something Cologne and Aachen just smile about. 😉
No good football? You‘re funny, with Eisern Union we have a club that went from secon league to championsleague in no time.
Who would think that you need the language of the country you are moving to? D'oh
i hate the fact that you didn’t put in the effort to learn german before coming here… it’s incredibly disrespectful.
I'm from Pakistan my name is Fahad will you marry me
I dislike the framing of point 3: it is not dark and gray until may- complete over exaggeration. From March onwards, the weather tends to get nicer and warmer, with more day light and great sunny days occasionally.
NEWSFLASH: Foreigners need to learn the language of the place they move to, need to legally register, THIS JUST IN: WINTER COLD.
WOW , THANK YOU
It's not cold - it's gloomy, rainy, and dirtier than usual.
@@FlanaFugue Unless you're a tree, you're free to move if you don't like it here.
good summary. also take care guys the supermarket is not in english.
As a person born and raised in Berlin I can tell you that almost everyone from Gen Z to Milennials can speak English fluently because we usually learn it from 3rd grade on. Me personally I am now 14 years old and just finished 8th grade and I'm fluent in English though my parents and most other elderly people (45+) didn't have English in school but Russian
(I ofc still make mistakes in English but my spelling and talking is definitely understandable)
I'm from Pakistan my name is Fahad will you marry me
I myself live in Berlin and I hate when tourists come to me and speak to me in english as if it’s the normal thing to do, they don’t even ask anymore. It’s not hard to learn basic phrases like „where is …“ . I am always happy to help but I hate when people assume that everybody speaks English cause they do not.
Hallo!
I find these kinds of comments so odd. Fair enough if you didn’t speak it but you do speak English. If someone came up to me asking for help in a language I could speak I wouldn’t hesitate. I’m half German myself but most Germans have too much pride. At the end of the day English is the most universal language- nobody should assume you speak it sure..but if it’s a big city like Berlin there’s a very high chance everyone you encounter speaks English
@@marekdeboer7977 Ackshually 🤓
"Anmeldung" means "registration", according to Wiktionary. Obvious when you come from countries like France, but the US ?
Or the UK. No such thing.
Im very confused, is that just like citizenship or?
@@garyrobinson5655 No. But everyone has to register in Germany, the exception would be a tourist visa. I‘m German and every time I move I have to register at the new place, it’s called Meldegesetz.
The equivalent in France would be the justificatif de domicile- you need to prove you have a French address to do anything. Usually it's a recent utility bill or tax doc with that address on it. But this also means you can't open a bank account or get hired for a legal job if you're homeless. Definitely a catch-22.
@@suzannethepaut-hasselback7050 But beware, some only accept bills from Orange, the former France Télécom telephone operator; or EDF, for your energy bills; as utility bills. Otherwise, you need a bill from your landlord or something that proves you're staying at someone's place: their own rent bills + copy of ID card + attestation d'hébergement. So prepare for having a lot of documents with you, even if they're trying to make things simpler 😉 !
I've lived abroad a big part of my adult live and yet have to see a country where you don't have to register if you need something. Can someone explain me how you else would get a phone line, if you don't register (place an order) your interest? Is there a place you just move without registering unless you want to live underground and not make use of infrastructure or live on someone's goodwill?
And the language, yes, you can live with English alone, I just don't get why you would move abroad if you don't want to take part in local culture and that requires language skills. If you just want to live somewhere else but continue to speak your language, then move to another city within your country.
As a friend told me, in the UK the don't have that system. My friend had to proof her adress by showing a telephon-bill for example. She lived 20 years in the UK, when Corona came and she lost her job. She asked for social help, but the authorities said, they wouldn't believe, that she lived in UK before ...
Hanau's weather wasn't so bad. I don't remember it being that cold and I took buses and trains everywhere until I was 24 when I bought my first BMW.🎉❤
In any nation you go you need to know the language of that country. Or carry a phone with good battery life with Google translate that works too
That’s right, you need to do that “anmeldung”. However, first you need to find a place to live before you can do that but with such a shortage of apartments and flats, it’s nearly impossible to find a place to live. My son is going through that dilemma right now in Germany. He said that for every vacancy that comes up in there’s like 50 or more applicants and the highest bidder and best qualified applicant, that’s the one that gets the place.
I mean..., I would assume you might need German in Germany..., just like Italian in Italy or French in France, etc😅 in order to be able to manage everything much better..., sure, many people might be able to speak English outside of the US or UK for instance, but knowing the native language of other countries would obviously help more...😅
I'm not German, but that's kinda obvious, isn't it?
For frankophones its usual a surprise
Their are usual the arrogant and entitled nations in case of speaking a another language
I live in Berlin and I was born here. I love English and other languages but I am really annoyed and offended by the fact that people come here and expect the residents to understand their language. We even have cafes and restaurants here where the waiters don't understand a single German word and want you to order in Spanish or English. And I'm talking about regular cafes nothing special.
that’s what happens when you lose two world wars
Oberholz am Rosenthaler Platz. Die sprechen dort meistens kein Wort Deutsch 😅
As a German let me tell you that you don’t need an "Anmeldung” for having an internet connection at your home. You just call, like in every country, a provider of your choice and sign a contract. That’s it.
Whats so crazy about „Anmeldung“ ?!
Do people get apartments, a job and a bankacount just like that in your Country? 😂😂😂
Surprise, surprise... you need to speak german in GERMANY. Man, what a strange concept...
For frankophones its usual a surprise
Their are usual the arrogant and entitled nations in case of speaking a another language
Don't worry, after the long, cold and dark Winter in which your heating is quite expensive, so you chose freezing voluntarily, you get a Summer without AC and outside of Berlin everything is literally on Fire or trying very hard to be.
The clubs in Germany are the best. The most fun I've had in Europe hands down.
I live in Berlin and the weather is not that bad
As a native English speaker, the first point about needing German in Germany is pretty obvious.
Imagine if in the end we should learn your language in our country and not you ours lol!
I live in berlin as german and i know english spanish and france and german so when you want to move to another country you have to learn their native language
How about leaving Berlin an leave some.more flats for us locals?
These foreigners realy be getting on my Last nerve 💀
as a german i wanna express my deepest condolences for living in berlin
It is helpful to speak the countries language while living in it. Shocker😮
When you move somewhere you should speak the language. It doesn’t matter which country. Don’t act that shocked.
Even germans have struggle with those pesky paperwork. I try to get WBS for like 4 months and still need unneccesary documents
If you're in Germany learn German, simple.
There goes complaint number 1
Today in Hannover, Paulaner Garten. The waiter asked me to speak english. I did. But I will never come back to Paulaner. It was insulting 😖
Me, a fellow european having lived in France/ Uk and experiencing the same in each country.
This year, the weather was grey and cold well into May. Usually, by February things are already heating up.
We had like 4 whole weeks of summer and now it’s just terrible again 😅
And another one in Berlin Great , yeah we need more People here great
what blasphemy that in the capital of Germany, they would dare to use the native language...
These videos work because they are about the stuff beyond the basics, keep that in mind for the next attempt
Dua Lipa on low settings xD
is it true that your degree may not transfer and be less useful in DE?
Yes. It has to be checked if it’s according to German standards. It’s different if you move from another country in the EU. But it’s wise to clarify everything before you move.
Yes.
Depends on where you got it and what you had to do there. If it isnt up to standard with what we have to do to get one, we dont recognize it for a degree transfer!
Be more concrete if you want useful info. A degree from Harward or Oxford is certainly not worth less 😊 A History degree from a rural university in Hungary...may not be valued as much as home, but is officially accepted(since EU), so, its slightly uphill, but doable.
A college degree from Congo may be of little value😢
@@jbruck6874“slightly uphill“. you are absolutely racist and just because German universities have more money available does not mean that they are better universities…. Or harder to actually finish
So the weather is a lot like living in Maine but with less snow?
This just seems like "i cant bother to learn the countries language and thus i struggle heres my petty issues i deal with" theres a great solution to everything you mentioned jist learn the damn Language and integrate yourself into my country and dont expect us to talk yoir Language with you in our own country.
Let me tell you how to speak German
1. What's your name, Wie heisst du.
2. thank you ,danke.
3. I don't speak German, ich spreche kein Deutsch.
4. No thanks, nein danke.
5. Yeah ,ja.
6. No, nein.
7. How old are you, wie alt bist du.
8. Where are you, wo bist du.
9. Can I have that ,kann ich das haben.
10. That's really cute ,das ist sehr süss.
finally someone came to Berlin
What i have to lern the french, if i move to france? Or english if i move to America? Or spanish if i move to Spain? No way. 😮 *Konfused Pikatchu face*
Even I know, it’s important to learn the native language. Even America has English it’s always better when also know the Native American languages in your area.
Know the Native American languages in your area? Lol
The housing market in Berlin has virtually collapsed. You may have to spend months (or up to a year) to find a long-term place.
Wow you need to know German in Germany. Thanks DW! Also open your eyes.
When you try to speak and practice German, they switch to English 😢
Yeah i also love berlin
the 4th most important thing you need to know is, PLEASE LEAVE YOU ARE RAISING OUR RENT PRICES
I wouldn't have a problem with the weather it would be a nice change from the hot wasteland called Australia.
I'm still waiting for the American-drawling Neukölln hipster crowd to take that advice.
I like these videos a lot but: Can you do videos about Northrhibe-Westphalia? Especially Cologne, Dusseldorf and the Rhur area?
There are soooo many unis and companies there that I consider moving there.
Can u go to Cologne, I live there, please
I watched the whole video even though i've been living in berlin my entire life
I know everyone ridicules the first point but I also understand the foreigners who don't learn it. You don't even get much chances to use your German here except for official reasons. If you really want spent your life somewhere learn the language ofc.
As a german, it´s obvious that you have to register your home adress (anmeldung). It´s not a big deal and in which countries is it not necessary for opening a bank account...?
Not needed in the US
Nah, I already lived 9 years without german without any notable problems in Berlin 😅
In Deutschland wird deutsch jesprochen hahahah
Anmeldung forever! ❤
You live in Germany and people expect you to speak German?
Quite absurd, isn‘t it?
Not.
Anmeldung!! Exactly 😊
and pepper spray for refugees better is a gun
It’s a good thing you need German in Germany
What you need to sign up for a Job, a bank account or internet in Germany? In most other countries they just give you those things without doing anything.
Yeah so they don't know who you are and what are you paying them. They just take your cash and rip you off .
And the boss just give you a few bucks for a whole week because you didn't have a contract lol
Maybe it helps not , but we germans hate that paperwork .. all of us .. even those who made it up ...
First of all you learn the language no matter where you go
I love how everything is in german when I'm travelling outside of germany. Especially in france.
Never needed to speak anything else then german.
Suggest a language we should speak so you feel comfortable enough in germany.
I always liked DW. But this clip is bs.

Ahhhhh my name is Berlin ❤😂
No grey winter in the south of Germany 😊

Hi, ive been trying to find a video , or even better , a video seriese about "goals to set twaed moving to germany" maybe you can help ??? bitte und danke!
Look for a job before you get here.
Learn German before you move here.
The fact that you need German in Germany and that you need an address to have a bank account and internet? Are thesennot standard everywhere??
To break it down - In Germany we say : „lern deutsch du Opfer“ and i think it’s beautiful
I love Germany
Best thing to do is not to smile too much. Locals might think that you have mental issues or you're making fun of them.
I used to smile a lot. Now I'm always with a shitty face, even when I'm using public trans 😅
"1. You still NEED German"
Oh, really? Yeah, true, if i go to any other country, all is their in german... not.
"2. Anmeldung"
You need this anywhere else too... o.O
"3. GREY Winter Weather"
Really? Clouds? Snow? Cold? What do you expect? Rainbows?
And NO, weather ISN'T every year until may "grey"...
ok ok sure the language thing is funny, but seriously, did you not look at anything at all to know that it's cold and grey in Berlin in the winter?
Grey, the colour is spelt grey just like the book and film...
You better know German🤦♂️ When you want to live in a country you have to know the language.
Im confused do Americans not use their addresses to get services?
