- Since its release, Abigail has been met with a ton of criticism regarding the marketing revealing the true nature of its titular character. While I agree the trailers gave away too much, does knowing Abigail is a vampire actually ruin the movie?

It wasn't ruined but it would've hit harder had it been a surprise
True but how many people would have watched it
@@jetla22 I don't blame them.
@@jetla22Probably the same number of people who did.
1) Radio Silence fans would have watched it either way
2) People would have talked about the twist and that probably would have garnered more attention
3) Less people may have actually watched it because vampire movies are kinda played out at this point in time
I'm not a fan of Radio Silence and I just don't see them doing anything original with a vampire story, so I don't care to watch this movie at all. But if I had heard word of there being some insane twist in it, it may have caused me to actually wanna give it a try.
Look I understand that the plot twist was revealed but you needed something to market the movie. And hence hiding the main plot was impossible. But I think Abigail would have been better had it stuck with its original premise till the very end. The fight of the group for survival and the dynamics between them was really well done. That was surprise of the movie. And they failed to utilize it. They needed one good plot twist to cement that theme.
The ending was predictable. But the execution was near perfect. Even if the idea was not flawless the execution was really great.
While the premise is what admittedly piqued my interest in the film, it definitely would have been better if the trailers didn't give away the fact that Abigail is a vampire. Imagine if the audience found out when the characters did?
Yup. I'm using Fight Club as a general analogy but how different would that movie had been if they just gave it away in the trailer? Still a good movie watching it again after you know but a completely different experience.
Or the sixth sense if you knew he was a ghost at the beginning but I guess that’s a little different since it isn’t revealed until the very end of the movie.
It’s an issue with many trailers. But wished I had went in completely blind. Tough these days.
I watched the trailer funky AFTER I saw the movie, and I was honestly shocked by how much it revealed. I can see why it would be difficult to avoid showing that Abigail is actually the vampire in marketing, but it showed so much more than that. .
I think the Dan Steven's turn was the most egregious. Should've never gave it away
@blainmoney6948 yes, that one in particular shocked me. Didn't wanna spoil it even more lol.
Radio Silence and Melissa Barrera sold me. The ballerina vampire aspect and Kathryn Newton also starring was a bonus. Abigail is so far the best horror film of 2024 for me.
Yeah, once I saw Melissa Barrera, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kathryn Newton, I was in.
I’m *so* glad they didn’t spoil the end cameo, though. I managed to not be spoiled, and it was a really pleasant surprise.
+1 for Angus McCloud... Whose dedication I missed during my first watch, because I left the theater a few minutes too early. Watched again yesterday and thought it was a perfect bookend.
Ever since Supernatural Kathryn Newton is a no for me.
@@JennaIsOverIt I quit Supernatural in season 5, so if she was in it, my ADHD ass doesn’t remember lol. Honestly, she was a lot of fun in Lisa Frankenstein, and in this, so she gets a pass.
@@beautifulmidnight i think she became recurring around 8. I also despised her in Ant-Man 2 lol
Nobody would’ve seen the movie otherwise. It’s barely breaking even at the box office as it is. I loved this movie, but them marketing it this way got more butts in seats.
How do you sell a vampire movie without revealing it was a vampire film, the entire notion that revealing that Abigail was a vampire ruined the movie is idiotic
THAT's the whole POINT. Don't sell it as a "Vampire movie". Not knowing who or what the killer is, is part of the Intrigue and Mystery which add to the Horror of the movie!
There are so many creative ways to hide the fact that Abigail is a vampire. Alot of Horror movies do it. In fact, IN the 1st Half of the movie, they effectively hide Abigail's true nature.
They could've present the killing in the trailer as a mysterious entity that does the killing OR present Abigail in the trailer as a Murderous Psychopathic (Human) child.
Chris Stuckmann made a REALLY GOOD point about the Trailer reveal argument. You must listen to what he said. 100% spot on analysis. I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!

@@LuluTheDuck33 it’s just nit picking for the sake of nitpicking, revealing that she was a vampire didn’t ruin anything, as a matter of fact a lot of people only wanted to see it because they revealed it was a vampire film
@@TheMarine316 Could have been presented as a mystery with people getting picked off... the tagline of a child with more than meets the eye would have been more than enough
@@johnstone2029 I think it’s fine as is, a lot of times keeping the mystery in a trailer translates to people not supporting the film, I know an awful lot of people that watched the first half that had zero interest & then when it’s revealed that it’s a vampire film they changed their minds real quick, people like to know what they’re going to see. They’ve been burned too many times by mysterious trailers
@@TheMarine316 Fair point... what are your thoughts on Long Legs? That is a movie that has a very effective marketing campaign with very little revealed. That being said, Long Legs is a pure horror suspense by the looks of it. Abigail was sort of a action horror comedy in that order so perhaps the vampire campaign bites were more lucrative.
I mean, if we’re looking at vampire films, From Dusk Till Dawn gave away the vampire twist/reveal in the marketing. I don’t see any difference here. Even when going outside of promotional material, who doesn’t know the killer reveal in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho? Does that destroy that movie that’s been hailed as an incredibly influential film to the horror genre? I don’t think so, and I’ve never heard anyone mention that. We can critique movie marketing all day long, but movies take a bit to develop the plot.
But imagine if the marketing hadn't given away FDTD?
Well, in a way I’m kind of glad I didn’t see the trailers to From Dusk Till Dawn. Actually, I don’t care about spoilers. I never did watch trailers for it back in the day since I was just a kid. I was more into kids’ stuff, although I had seen quite a few R-rated movies as a kid. I think I was well aware it was a vampire movie though. Something about the poster/VHS/DVD front cover just screamed vampires. Maybe all the bats. And even the movie’s title sounded like vampires even though I didn’t know what dusk and dawn were back in the day. Also, I do remember seeing the movie always labeled in the horror section. And when I did finally watch the movie, I was well aware it was a vampire movie. But for most of April 2024 I have been curious about the marketing for From Dusk Till Dawn (I watched a couple movie reaction videos to the movie). I’ve been wanting to watch a couple trailers to it to see how they handled the twist and if they kept it a mystery or actually revealed stuff. I keep forgetting to check out trailers though. I get easily distracted, and when I’m scrolling through the recommended videos on the video I am watching, there is like 5-10 videos I want to watch and then I forget to check out a trailer or two for From Dusk Till Dawn. But it seems like I got my answer. And it didn’t bother me I already knew stuff. I still enjoyed the movie and is one of my favorite vampire movies. Plus probably my favorite George Clooney movie. I guess when I saw it was nice that I didn’t really see any trailers, I look at it as saying “well, that’s kind of neat.” But as a kid. I was always watching channels that the movie wouldn’t be marketed on. I was oblivious to the movie until it was showing up in movie rental stores like Blockbuster and Mr. Movies. But the poster/front cover does give clues and I think I was able to piece stuff together and then it always being in the horror section. It’s even possible my parents knew about it and let stuff slip.
Yeah, it depends on what you're going with in the movie though. Like if the trailer for Fight Club had the reveal in it, that movie's 1000% different watching it the first time. From Dusk Till Dawn did give away a lot, I'm not sure if that was a good thing but the issue with that one was if they didn't give away something a lot of people would have thought it was a completely different genre of movie.

I didn’t know of the twist in from dust till dawn and was very close to turning off the movie because I hated the type of movie it looked like becoming. When the twist happened I was relieved.
personally, I don’t think so because it the description of the movie no matter what website ur on, they already state that shes not a “normal little girl”.
"Not a Normal Little Girl" can mean anything. But revealing her to be a Vamp in the trailer is just plain stupid
@@LuluTheDuck33I totally get why you say that, but if you’re looking at the trailer from a marketing perspective, it’s really not.
"not a normal little girl" a simple statement like that USED to be enough to get people interested, now they basically say "here's every interesting thing that happens in the movie. Now come see it again but bigger. With popcorn."

I think the Studio wants to play it safe. This is why modern movies are SUX, because everybody play it safe and no stomach for a little risk!
I saw this movie twice and loved it both times. While i cant help but think about the oh shit moment i would've had had i not known this was a vampire movie, i also would not have gone to see this had i NOT known it was a vampire movie
There's already a similar discourse raking place surrounding Shamalayan's new movie Trap (which looks really good btw!) where the trailer reveals that the main character is actually the killer. Knowing Shamalayan, this likely will be revealed early and there's going to be a number of other true plot twists that really weren't shown at all in the trailer. In fact I think the trailer probably mainly shows events in the first 30 minutes and doesn't give much away at all compared to other trailers for big movies. The premise of the main character being the killer actually just makes me more excited!
I agree, I thought most people knew this was a take on Draculas daughter. I'll check it out when released on DVD in England, can't wait. The trailer makes it look fun 😊🐾💜👍
the Black Phone is the best recent example of a trailer spoiling a movie, what's worse is it was delayed so we saw it for another couple months
😮Knowing she was a vampire was what drew me in to go watch it in theaters 🤣. I loved it. Good video and discussion 👌
Agreed. While the trailer may show a little too much the vampire reveal was not a part of that. How else would you market this movie without it to get people to the theater?
No bc when it was announced it was already described as people kidnapping the daughter of Dracula. It was never meant to be a secret and even the poster showed Abigail with blood on the outfit so clearly something was gonna happen with the girl. So the ppl mad about it need to learn what is actually a spoiler cause showing Abigail was a vampire was never a spoiler. It only affected the ppl who didn’t know about the premise of the movie so holding that against the movie was pretty stupid. Would it be more effective for the viewer if they didn’t know they were walking into a vampire movie sure but it was never gonna be a secret.
I don't know maybe they should have made it a secret and don't tell the premise. I feel not knowing would automatically make this kind of movie better.
@@bigkmoviesandgames it possibly could have but it was still announced as a vampire movie. If Barbarian revealed the twist in the trailer then yes that would’ve been a stupid move but that was always intended to be a secret. Abigail was never gonna be a movie to surprise the audience that Abigail herself was a vampire. Same applies for Orphan the twist was never gonna be revealed in the trailer.
i never knew about an announcement before hand. The trailer was my 1st introduction to the film. For people like me, not knowing would've been awesome.
That's the problem. The Marketting should never reveal she's a Vamp or Daughter of Dracula. It ruined the mystery. They should keep it ambiguous.
Make it look like the little girl is a murderous psychopaths, or something...
@@Ghostface1998 it could have been if they marketed it right. No one forced them to reveal it was a vampire movie they could have just showed the characters randomly being picked off by something in the shadows in the trailer and maybe even alluded that something in the house was doing it like a haunted scenario or something. There's no way it wouldn't have been at least slightly more interesting with a twist people didn't see coming. Hell it didn't even have to be called Abigail.
I did the exact same thing. I stopped when they show abigail turn into a vampire

But with my last two comments regarding your Psycho and T2 examples, I do totally understand and see what your point is about looking back at those films and still being able to enjoy both openings/1st acts of those films. I was just respectfully pointing out that those films back then upon release didn't have those twist reveals in their marketing. Of course, different time back then, but also those films had an easy out to not have to reveal those big twists in the marketing - one being a sequel to a major hit (The Terminator) and the other being an Alfred Hitchcock movie as he was a major name at that point. Again, all respectfully as I love your videos and your opinions, even in the rare instance we don't see eye to eye. Be well and keep up the great work!
Kinda sounds like some people are just impatient. I wouldn’t even call them movies fans if they expect the build up in the first 5 minutes. That’s not how film works.
I definitely agree with you and it being a Vampire movie got me to go see it in the first place. However when I was watching it there were a few moments that made me think" How awesome would it of been if I didn't know that Abigail was a vampire?" Expecially the sub plot about a Mafia Hitman hiding somewhere in the mansion. That actually would be an awesome movie on it's own.
Yep. The trailer literally gave everything away, so no anticipation to see the film in cinemas.
As somebody who did not watch any trailer before going into the movie and only watching the trailer after having seen the movie, I am 100% confident it would have impacted my experience.
I did know it was a vampire movie walking into it, but that's all I knew. The trailer shows you almost all the interesting stuff throughout.
I'm not saying I would have been miserable in the theater, but I'm sure I would have been very frustrated with how much the trailer showed. I was very frustrated watching the trailer AFTER I've seen the movie, so, yeah.
It immediately made me think of Gone Girl to be honest. Watching Abigail for the first time felt a lot like watching Gone Girl for the second time. The cool part about these movies that have some kind of reveal is that your 1st and 2nd viewing experience are very different from one another, but skipping straight to the second (for most of Abigail, at least) did make me wish to have seen the movie without knowing anything about it, and only then watching it again knowing everything I know to see how that reframes the first 30-40% of the film
For me I definitely think it did ruin certain aspects of the movie. Abigail being a vampire didn’t bother me as that’s literally the set up of the movie. BUT it reveals so much about what happens to all the other characters and that’s what bummed me out about it. As an avid movie goer it’s hard to avoid the trailer when the theater itself played it literally before every movie I saw for atleast 2 months leading up to the film.
I spoke to you about this on Twitter, but I just thought I’d repeat my thoughts here.
I definitely wouldn’t say that the film was ‘ruined’ or ‘destroyed’ by the marketing, it just completely depends on whether or not you enjoy the time spent with these characters in the first act of the film. For me personally, I wasn’t a fan of them, so the first act was a bit of a trudge to get through. Once the film actually gets going and it delivered on what I paid to see, I really enjoyed most of it. The other problem was some of those third act reveals that I saw in the trailer, but I saw the trailer at the cinema so it was on the biggest screen possible in front of me. I should’ve just gone on my phone, but once I caught a glimpse of what happened to some of the characters, I couldn’t forget it sadly.
Now honestly, I would have enjoyed the film more if I didnt know it was a vampire film, but I understand from a marketing perspective, you have to appeal to this generations attention span to get arses in seats.
Another very level headed video from you! Always good to hear your perspective on things!
The trailer for the Fall Guy movie is basically just the whole movie...you've been saying this
I strongly disagree. Would you be cool with me making a response video to your video? Could be an insightful discourse if we keep it respectful!
I haven't seen it yet and knowing she is a vampire is part of why it got knocked lower down my list of movies to watch. I thought back to older movie trailers of the 80s and 90s and thought there were ways they could've let you know that something sinister was happening but keeping that part a secret. I can only imagine how dope it would've been to find it out during the movie when the characters do as well. I'm still going to watch it and may still like it a lot.
Chris Stuckmann made a REALLY GOOD point about the Trailer reveal argument. You must listen to what he said. 100% spot on analysis. I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!
ua-cam.com/video/7qMSZ_g0fOk/v-deo.html
Lastly, and sorry for the multiple comments as I don't mean to take up too much space in this section - it wasn't like it ruined the movie for me - I had a blast watching it and yes, I would have figured out something sinister in the first act with the paintings and Abigail's interactions with Joey and everything else you mentioned, but the movie purposely acting like a mystery behind the upcoming chaos made it feel like Radio Silence didn't want that reveal to be revealed. Just felt like that to me and my producing partner upon seeing the movie in the theater. For all I know, RS was the ones leading the marketing of their film, but it just was the particular way the story unfolded in the set up that made it feel like it wasn't aligned with the marketing of the picture. That and... why didn't they try to break out through the big skylight in the main room during the daytime of the movie - haha. Anyway, thanks for your videos as always!
You put it into words perfectly. The way the story unfolded and the marketing didn't align; it felt messy.
I think they should've just shown/hint Abigail as a vampire in the opening shot or at least first 5 minutes, then cut to the characters in the show completely unaware (aka. dramatic irony -- audience knows things the characters don't), instead of try to build tension of figuring out who she is since the beginning, and waiting 40 minutes in to do a "reveal", when they spoiled the entire premise with their marketing. Just keep everyone in the audience on the same page, instead of going meta (those who saw the trailer know the reveal, those who didn't don't). It's just strange.
I think marketing it without showing Abigail as some type of monster would’ve been difficult.
That being said, I do think the movie would’ve better off had there been more of a mystery as to what exactly what was going on. Like had we started seeing people get picked off one by one and then all of a sudden it’s revealed that the girl is a vampire. I think that would’ve elevated my experience 😊
That sort of comes down to how to make a trailer with intrigue. They can introduce the situation and imply that she has some connection with people getting picked off without just showing it. You can cut a trailer to make it seem like it's someone/something looking out for her and just show less. They didn't really need to show that it's her doing it IMO and could still have kept some mystery around what her deal is.
@@djcrouton2680 i def would've preferred that approach. and i still enjoyed the movie even knowing she was a vampire. but yeah you're dead on, def think they could've cut the trailers better
I would not have seen this movie if I hadn't known it was about vampires, as such I have now seen it 4 times. So I guess there's that 🤷🏼♀️
Very good points. I think this highlights bigger issue with the auidence which is down to Hollywood's fault with glut of unnesscary inclusion of midway twists or suprise reveals becoming the all to common its now become a gimmick.
Essentially now the twist what holds up the movie which is not a positive. But because the way our viewing habits changed due to streaming and the rate of content that gets released people don't rewatch movies like they used to or rarely do. The twist doesn't even need to make sense.
Sometimes I personally don't mind spoilers, it truly show if story still holds up without suprise.
I'm only just starting to get back into watching movies again after several years and I had never even heard of Abigail until I watched your Top 10 Vampire Movies video. That sold me on adding it to my watchlist but I didn't check it out right away. I finally got around to watching it 2 nights ago and...
It is now my favorite movie. No, not my favorite vampire movie or my favorite horror movie. My favorite movie, full stop. It dethroned Scott Pilgrim, which has been my favorite movie for the better part of the last 10 years. I watched it at home that night, then drove further than I normally would to see a movie to get to the closest theater with a showing last night. I'm torn between watching it again right now and forcing myself to watch something new. I have literally written nearly 3,000 words in the last two days gushing about how much I love this movie and I firmly believe that the Academy should get over their bias against horror and at least nominate Alisha Weir for an Oscar, I thought her performance was that goddamn impressive.
None of that would be at all different if I didn't know she was a vampire before seeing the movie. Hell, "vampire ballerina" was the hook that got me interested! This whole "controversy" sounds so damn silly to me.
I can tell the trailer and marketing reveal isn’t an issue because this movie has immense rewatch value. As soon as I saw it I wanted to see it again. I’m glad it didn’t completely hinge itself on the shock of a vampire reveal, because it has a lot more to offer than just that. Also, Danzig on the soundtrack >>>>
This was literally my comment on your abigaiil review. I still feel like the movie could have benefited from keeping that and word of mouth could have helped the film. But they wanted people in seats immediately and I understand that. Just keep giving me vampire films like this and I'll be happy. I actually watched a Near Dark documentary recently and tbe director Katherine goes into detail about sequel/prequel ideas for that film and it sounds awesome. But that's something that would never happen by now. Sucks too cause her idea of seeing just how old these vampires are with this road trip period piece sounds fuckin awesome. Shit like the Civil War would have been incorporated. Crazy.
You should do a video ranking your favorite trailers 👀
Not "Alveraz." It's "Valdez." And I appreciate your point as I'm a fan of your channel and love that you champion my friend and fellow writer, Matt Leslie. However, I think the trailer did a disservice to the film and it would have been better served if it was a surprise that Abigail was a vampire. Like you said, but through a different lens, this was similar to "From Dusk 'Til Dawn." However I love that movie because the surprise made the experience so much better for me. Now I was in college with "FDTD" came out, so I never even got the chance to see that trailer, but renting it in the mid 90s and watching this crime/action/thriller with Clooney and Tarantino kidnapping Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis and her brother, wondering the first half of the film if they were all going to come together as collective allies in the end. only to find out towards the latter part of the second act that they were in a vampire bar and this was actually a vampire movie, blew me and my friends away. Hence, it would have been a much more fun experience if Abigail's marketing didn't reveal the vampire plot thread. Just my opinion, and even though this rare time I am in disagreement with you, I still am a big fan of your channel and of course respect your opinion always.
20:37
I disagree that the movie experience would be the same in that alternate universe. If they never told us that Abigail was a vampire then people would've complained that the twist was too obvious instead. That happened to their previous Scream movies, so I guarantee it would've happened here as well.
I completely agree that knowing Abigail is a vampire doesn't ruin the movie at all.
We live in an instant gratification world now, people go see movies for the wrong reasons.
Keep doing your thing brother, I’ve been watching your reviews for a few years now.
Stay inspired🤙🏾
Cody Leach, when you go to a theater how do you avoid the trailers before each showing?
I usually don’t pay attention to them. I look at my phone til the movie starts.
I only watch trailer number one for any movie because when they start having trailer 2 & trailer 3 In my opinion than they are showing to much. I loved Abigail I can’t wait to buy a physical copy of Abigail when it comes out on home video.
Cody have u see the trailer for M. Night's movie Trap? It looks promising
I knew this was a vampire film for a while, because it was initially announced as a reboot of Dracula's Daughter before Radio Silence walked that back and said they were making it more of its own thing.
And Psycho when my Mom was a teen in the 60s, no one knew the Norman bates plot point in the marketing of that. In fact, theater managers back then had to respectfully ask their patrons to not tell other people the twist as they came out of the movie.
I do remember as a kid showing Terminator 2 at a birthday party sleep over, and my friend Chad, had no idea that Arnold was going to turn out to the good guy. It was fun watching him figure it out. But I agree with you, I had a great time watching this movie, even after the trailer.
Her being a vampire was the selling point, I can see why people are frustrated that it takes 40 minutes to get to that (and it will probably frustrate them more on repeated viewings) My problem is that the trailer definitely spoiled most of the plot points and what happened to people
The trailer made me want to see this movie even more (I’ve seen it twice and already preordered the DVD).
Also, for me, a fun aspect of a movie, such as Abigail and others like it is not the twist or the reveal, but how the characters deal with it once they figure it out. I knew going into this movie that that little girl was a vampire and, I wasn’t so much worried about how the characters would find out or win, but how they would deal with it once they acknowledged the threat. Once you find out that this little girl is a psychotic vampire capable of ripping grown people to shreds and she is loose in the house, what do you do then? That is what is interesting to me.
If you want a great example of a movie like this, using another vampire film, I would go for the original fright night. It’s given away in the marketing that the movie is about a vampire moving in next-door, but they play with the concept for a while before they flat out reveal it. It’s no surprise that Jerry is a vampire. We saw it in all of the trailers and Tv spots. But the journey to how we get there is fun and it sets up our characters.
Cody I highly recommend you check out Boy Kills World. I really think you will love it. I saw it a week early and went in completely blind and I loved it. I think you will too.
As someone who doesn’t watch trailers for any movies anymore I knew she was a vampire just from the posters. & then a friend told me while we were talking on the phone
9:46 It sounds like I won't mind having the "twist spoiled." The comedic character development was one of my favorite things about Ready or Not. Radio Silence has a pretty good track record with me, too. I'm really looking forward to seeing Abigail.
It would've been cool to not know and be surprised but for those into vampire movies knowing from the trailer is cool
I agree a lot of what you said here it’s no use complaining if the reveal is easy to see coming in the first place.
It doesn't crumble, but ot changes the experience. It's a new film that could have been named in one of your examples in future, but cant because it was in the trailer. Thays what I think it is. It had the possibility to have an impact on audiences.
Chris Stuckmann made a REALLY GOOD point about the Trailer reveal argument. You must listen to what he said. 100% spot on analysis. I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!

Ironically there was a Speak No Evil trailer when I saw Abigail that spelled out the first 90% of the movie scene-for-scene, couldn't believe it
I mean, if you read or heard early info about Abagail, the fact it was going to be a remake of Draculas daughter. That kind of gave away the premise anyway. But yeah, I do avoid a lot of modern trailers due to spoilers or at least I'm very wary of them. The Alien Romulus teaser was the way to do a teaser just hope the full trailer doesn't spoil it.
I just saw the movie, had tons of fun, I kept thinking they should've kept her identity a mistery, would've maybe improved that bit a little. Still, it was the most fun I've had in a while with a horror movie, and I can see your arguments. And may I add, the kid did an awesome job!
My tactic is to watch the trailer as soon as it comes out. That way, when the movie is finally released, I've forgotten what was in the trailer but I still remember that I want to see it. My terrible memory is finally of use!
When they left the Scream franchise it was announced that they were going to make a vampire movie for Universal. Long before any casting was announced. The trailer just made me want to see the film more.
Would the same people complain about the Terminator 2 trailer giving away who the villain was as well?
Every movie I've read the book for is technically spoiled but hasn't hurt my enjoyment
Me and my friend loved this film, but we both said we wished we didn’t know she was a vampire going in, since it takes so long to actually show that. I do understand as well though that some people wouldn’t have gone to see it without the tagline of vampire ballerina. I go to the cinema a lot so sometimes it’s just not possible to skip trailers, unless you show up late
I saw the trailer, knew it was a vampire movie and that she was obviously the vampire and i still loved the movie. But, if I went in completely blind or only saw the kidnapping part in a trailer, it would've been an amazing surprise to find out the shift in genres. I had the very fortunate situation back in the 90s when i was in high school of watching From Dusk Til Dawn completely blind. My friend's brother rented it on vhs and that was so cool seeing the complete change from crime movie to vampire action. without seeing a trailer definitely made that experience better, but it wouldn't have ruined my first watch of it
i think the one thing that they should NOT have included in the trailer is Kathryn Newton as a vampire. it sucked having that spoiled because everything else was actually pretty fair game
I agree. That and the shot of Dan Stevens as a vampire was disappointed to see in the trailer.
Just saw Abigail today it was so good, also loved hearing blood and tears by Danzig
Personally I think if the film has a twist that changes the tone of the film then that should be kept out of any trailer or marketing.the problem is once the films out people talk and usually spoil things more than most trailers do
There was a report late last year about how Radio Silence was making a secret universal monster movie and then it was rumored (maybe confirmed, can’t remember) that it was a Dracula’s daughter adaptation so I feel like it’s always been the plan to know that Abigail was a vampire
I think knowing the little girl is a vampire is as germane to the story's purpose as knowing Dune is set on a desert planet. That said, it still is a marketing disaster. Here's why...
Abigail was marketed to a demographic that has grown to believe everything is an easter egg, a big twist, or a spoiler. It is irrelevant if there really is no twist. If that particular audience member THINKS there's supposed to be a twist and believes it has been spoiled in the trailer, they won't go. And given that Abigail is struggling at the box office, that's exactly what they chose to not do.
The trailer house that cut the trailers really needed to play the game and proceed as if it was a big twist to not be spoiled because that would have paired with that demographic expectation. Is that fair to Radio Silence, that they had to play games to maintain a secret that's not really a secret at all? Absolutely. But ads never sell you what you need. They sell you what you want.
I'm so glad you brought up Terminator 2. I was thinking the same thing. Would it have been cool the first time you saw it to not know Arnold was good this time? Yeah, it would have been a nice reveal. It TOTALLY didn't ruin the movie one iota. A good movie is a good movie. Period.
I personally think modern movie trailer's in general are giving away too much of the plot. I have stopped watching trailers and have enjoyed movies alot more not having seen much or any of the movie. If i am unsure about a movie i will quickly scan through a trailer for like 10-15 seconds to get a general idea. I went back and watched the first omen and Abigail trailer after watching the movies and the trailers did give away alot in my opinion
I recently saw a trailer for the new Alien movie..
And I can't describe how pumped I am after watching it...
It was a very tiny trailer tho
I refuse to watch anymore trailers for it..
9:00 the Keyser Soze if you will
I'm curious to know your thoughts on the new Freddy Kruger movie
Yes I agree, my issue was not just that we’re told that Abigail is a vampire (I don’t mind that) but it also tells you that Katherine newtons character gets turned. So as soon as the movie started I was already anticipating her death/turn which ruined the part of the movie where the characters aren’t sure what happens after a bite
I kind of wanna see this movie
There was also that scene where they show a very large painting of Abigail and her father and it definitely wasn't a modern portrait of them and they looked odd in it. lol Put that with the picture of the house with bats that was shown and you can't put two and two together.
There's a fan trailer on UA-cam that I highly recommend for everyone, Better Call Saul - Full Series Trailer by itemax. I'm obsessed with it.
It's an example of how to do a trailer right.
The problem with trailers and studios is that, they want people to see this film and they put together a trailer that promotes the film and gives people an idea of what the film is...nowadays
We get to see the whole plot unveil and when we see the film such as Abigail...we know what is coming because the suprise was already shown...
Which can destroy your experience...I had this before and It's very frustrating. I wish trailers were more Vauge...like the Cloverfield days
Just tease and then build some hype...be Vauge about it and then release the film with that hype and mystery and then have the suprises happen...
That's how it's supposed to be done...I wish I could go back to those days.
It honestly depends on the quality of the movie itself.
Black Christmas 2019 revealing it’s twist in it’s trailer may have hurt it, but you can tell from earlier moments in the trailer that it would be an okayish film, bordering on not being a fun time at all. It looks and feels like someone stepped in and is trying way too hard to market the film to you. It’s like being forced to take a bite of a cake that either wasn’t baked properly, or tampered with after the fact. It’s easily skippable.
With Abigail, even with knowing certain things like her being a vampire, you can still see a ton of effort and passion translated on the screen as opposed to Black Christmas 2019, regardless if there was actual passion put into it or not.
And it looks like whoever marketed Abigail knew they didn’t even need to go as far they did to sell you on the movie. They didn’t have to force you to take a bite, they let the cake speak for itself and you got a bite with some extra icing on it. It makes you crave more.
I read some of the negative reviews & most of them were about how they didn’t like following the characters & waiting for them to figure out what the audience already knows. I highly disagree with that. I think it ups the anticipation & makes the viewer much more excited for that reveal. Not every single reveal in a movie has to be hidden from the viewer. Plenty of shows do this as well where the viewer learns something before the characters in the story do. It makes it much more exciting & fun because you don’t know how those characters will react. The longer you spend getting to know the characters & waiting for them to find out the reveal, you start to anticipate what their reactions will be & I find that very fun in a story such as this. I mean if you look at Ready or Not, Grace doesn’t know what’s about to happen & granted, we don’t know the details of what’s about to happen to her right away but they do show us in the very beginning that something sinister is linked to the family she marries into. Then they start the game & Grace still has no idea what is going on & we know what’s happening. It was a fun journey to see her make all these little mistakes before she knew the truth because as the viewer, you’re like “no don’t do that!” & it’s just anticipating & exciting to wait & see her learn the truth. Not sure why people are so up and arms over this topic. It’s beyond me.
The movie was advertised as fun, not an intense horror movie. Would it have been awesome to not know that? Sure. Did it make the movie less fun? Not even a little bit… Saw the same thing with From Dusk Till Dawn when it came out (I’m getting old)
i too enjoyed it. Trailer didn;t spoil it for me. I had read they were doing a take on Dracula's daughter. I had a lot of fun, really enjoyed the humor throughout as well and some over the top performances too. Very good horror/comedy. I also really like Late night with the Devil. Looking forward to longlegs and Maxxine.
Have you ever watched Midnight Mass Cody? Knowing how much you enjoy vampire films I think you will love that limited series written and directed by Mike Flanigan. The best portrayal of vampires I've seen on screen. The writing, the rich characters, themes...He's done a lot of great work but this is the only one I need to know that man gets it.
I'm not into horror movies but i thoroughly enjoyed this one....i saw it twice at the theater....when i saw it the second time, i saw a matinee,i was the only one in thier!so i had my own private screening!😂
I don't think it ruined the movie but I think I would have enjoyed it more had I not known the vampire thing in advance.
If I hadn't known though, I may not have watched it at all.
I did go in knowing the premise and it was quickly obvious where it was headed. But I really enjoyed this movie. I liked the characters. It made me jump a few times and it made me laugh too. Lots of great shots and good quality. Not groundbreaking but a solid movie I enjoyed and had fun with and will rewatch.
Wasn't it like confirmed very early on that Alisha Weir was the vampire? Like didn't we find that out before the trailer dropped?
Four words: From Dusk Till Dawn
…a perfect movie that flips its initial premise - Tarantino-esque crime caper - in the middle of its run time. The original trailers and all promotional materials gleefully showed that it was indeed a vampire film.
I loved Abigail and definitely tried to think of how the film would play out had the trailer not showed its cards. Would have been a mindfuck, but yeah, I get it that the vampire element is its main selling point to get butts into the theaters. Agreed that the trailer definitely shows a bit much in terms of the fates of certain characters….but thats 2024 for you. 😅🤦🏻♂️
The I am legend trailer made it clear there were creatures but we didnt know what they were
I think the more important discussion we should all be having is regarding Radio Silence's horror movie kinks:
1. Mansions
2. Dead body pit
3. People exploding
In all seriousness, I thought Abigail was quite enjoyable! I will say, I thought the last 15min were a bit clunky, which were the same issues I had with Ready or Not. I feel like RS needs to work on their endings a bit more🤷🏻♂️ Also, I thought the comedy was much better in Abigail than Ready or Not👍🏻
I didn't know Arnold was the good guy in T2 because I was in my teens in the 1990s and saw it opening weekend before that movie became part of the "pop culture." AND more importantly to the point of this video, the marketing for T2 didn't show Arnold as the good guy. So it was a surprise leading up to that "hallway" moment for everyone who experienced it in the theaters during that time.
The counterpoint I make is the only reason I went to see it in theatre is because I knew it was a vampire movie. If it was marketed as a "kidnapping" movie, yeah I'm going to wait until it's on streaming. After opening weekend it would have been leaked/spoiled for the majority of people anyways because of social media. Would it have been cool to have a Malignant type reveal? Sure. But I don't think it negatively impacted this movie in any way either.
There were still many badass reveals throughout the film that I really enjoyed. Matthew Goode at the end was terrifying. I am 100% seeing this film again! Definitely the best of 2024
I saw the trailer, heard the reviews and still paid $25 on Prime Video and loved it! Still was able to experience second-hand shock. Watched with a friend that had no idea. She kept saying "this is good but how is it horror?", then screamed for joy when the cuffs came off
I don't watch Trailers in general for movies I'll see eventually. But even without seeing the Trailer, I knew about the "twist". But had a blast nevertheless and the movie still has surprises left.
When you see the twist near the end with one of our main characters, I would say not too much was spoiled. Abigail wasn't supposed to be the surprise. It was just set up to make people think that.
I genuinely think trailer companies should sit their employees down and have them watch the Barbarian trailer before making any horror trailer.
I watched that trailer when I went to see Halloween Ends in the theater. I had no idea Barbarian even existed and that trailer instantly convinced me to go watch it opening night without showing anything, and I mean ANYTHING with regard to all the cool twists and turns.
After watching Abigail, it was incredibly easy for me to see a version of the trailer that doesn't reveal any of the cool stuff (like the pool of bodies or who turns into a vampire later on in the film), but also doesn't reveal this is a vampire flick.
That, I think, is the frustrating part.
I'm someone who, in the past 12 or so years, has preferred to go into movies completely cold. So yes, this bothered me. I didn't see any trailers, so for others to go on about her being a vampire was upsetting for me to hear about. I don't like building expectation and anticipation. When the only thing I know is "she's going to be a vampire," that's all I obsessed over for the first 45 minutes of the film. That's because I've trained my mind to not need to focus on that stuff anymore because how I watch films now.
Sorry, but your argument doesn't work for my mindset. The trailer ruined that other people ruined that for me. If they said "They have to watch over a kid and things go bad," that's fine and surface level. It doesn't let me know HOW things will go bad or who will be doing it.
The premise of the film that was sold in the trailer is what hooked me in! What killed the film for me was the last act.
Can't quite put my finger on what it was but as soon as the panic room scene happened - all of the wind got taken out of it for me.
2/3 of the way through the film it was up there with First Omen as my fave horror film of the year, the final act dragged it way way way down for me
Sadly, Yes and I don't watch trailers too much anymore, but I did with this movie, and it was a mistake.
Yes
I saw the trailer and it didn’t ruin anything for me. Knowing she was a vampire didn’t ruin anything for me and made it a more enjoyable watch knowing there was a buildup to her vampire reveal.
