    I know this now over 3 years ago. Gawd I loved your motherly tips/advise on this new toy I got me today. You came across so genuine that I kept watching you til the credits came on. STALKER! nOT!!! but anyways, THANK YOU so much for your video. I truly learned from you. God Bless You.

    You are amazing. I bought a serger to make masks, but I didn't really know much about it. The machine came all ready threaded, so of course when it stopped sewing, I was really frustrated. I came across your video and you explained everything so clearly. My lower looper was not threaded properly because no one had ever showed that it goes behind the little block. That made the difference and I was able to complete all of my masks. Also, showing where the upper looper arm should be between the needles when starting out was great. I have subscribed to you channel and I will continue to refer to your channel for any questions I have. Thank you so much

    SO VERY HAPPY I RAN ACROSS YOUR VIDEO!!!! I bought myself a Brother 1034D Serger for my birthday and have been intimidated by it. Last weekend, I resigned myself to watch all the Brother Serger videos on UA-cam that I could find. Finally got the courage today, and just found your video, which is FANTASTIC for me because it appears you have the same Brother Serger model that I have. So, while watching your video for the 2nd time, I paused through it while sewing on my first project (pj bottoms). LOVE THE MACHINE!!! (Bought mine on Amazon.) Thanks so much for posting your tutorial and I look forward to watching your other serger tutorials!

    OH WOW! Thank you! I think you sold me on getting a serger. JoAnn has a sale on a later model Brother serger. I will look around at new and used options. I love my regular Brother sewing machine that I have had for years. I might stay with Brother. And thank you for all of your tips.

    My repairman showed me a trick (and why it comes with those threads in it). You just cut off the existing thread at the spool and tie a knot to the new color and put that on the spool. Then just gently wind the thread through the machine till the new color is all the way through to where you need it. The little knot joining the two colours will easily go through all the knobs and holes till you get to the needle and then you just cut it off and re-thread the needles.

      Yes it works all the time, thats the way i thread with tying the threads then letting the other colour/s follow, rather than re-threading from the start

    Once my machine arrives, I’m going to practice, practice, practice, before advancing to actually using the serger on a project. Thanks to your great video, it should be smooth sailing to learn the basics. As it happens, your video popped up today, and thankfully it’s about the serger I purchased! Can’t wait to get started! Thx for sharing your wisdom about setting up and using a 1034 brother serger.

    It IS intimidating. I got mine yesterday. So, of course, as life likes to do to me by ensuring I learn everything the HARD way, right out of the gate, I encountered an issue with a jam one test piece in. I had to learn how to rethread the entire thing. But this is how I learned to sew too (just a couple of months ago). Trial by fire. I'm pleased I'm not the only one who was utterly overwhelmed with it when I first pulled the overlock machine from the box. Following a rage-rethreading post-jam, I literally yelled out like some savage warrioress after the slaughter. Like, "Yeah, bring it!" running the machine and seeing I had done it successfully.
    Yeah, screw that. I wouldn't spend extra to have two of anything in order to avoid overcoming the intimidation factor of rethreading. I just sucked it up out of necessity and did it. Now I know, and I know I can do it again. Though I can understand why some would go out of their way to avoid it.
    I appreciate the video. It was very helpful.

      Hey Megan, are you still liking your Serger? I’m also trial by fire, buying a sewing machine and Serger maybe? Or would the Serger be best alone first since I’m going to start by doing scarves and easier things for awhile? I’m thinking maybe just buy the serger?

    • @teethnclaws
      @teethnclaws 4 роки тому

      @@hollyh7924 I have both, love both. Sure, again, it is hard learning to use this sort of equipment and getting a handle on the upkeep/maintenance as well as proper use. There is a sense of satisfaction once you've learned how to keep your overlock and sewing machine operating, even after a few jams. I would start with a sewing machine THEN get a serger if you want your finished products to have a more finished professional seam. Having said that, there are countless helpful YT videos out there, showing you how to get pretty good results with just the sewing machine. I got the overlock on a whim and I don't regret either. Best of luck!

    I just bought a similar model (1034DX) and was so happy to see this video. I was almost convinced I had to buy cone adapters to prevent the spools from jiggling while in use. I'm glad to see the Sure-Lock cones don't do that. Whew! One less thing to buy for now.

    I have two of these sergers but it’s not because I don’t know how to thread them! I have one with black thread and one with white thread so that I don’t have to get bogged down with having to thread when I’m working on a project! I got both of mine dirt cheap, one was $30 and the other was $12! I bought them from people who were frustrated and didn’t know how to use them!

    Regarding threading a serger . . .if you can, start saving up money every month and buy a Baby Lock. Specifically, a model that has the forced air, automatic threading button. Sewing is such a source of joy and a great outlet for endless creativity, dread should not be part of the equation! My first serger was the type that I had to do what everyone knows, connecting new spools of thread by individually tying the ends together and praying that it wouldn’t come undone! I traded that machine in, at a quilting store, on a used serger that does the threading for me, at the touch of a button. You can only appreciate how wonderful that is, if you have the kind that most people probably start with. Dread is no longer a word that comes to mind, related to my serger. They are ridiculously expensive, I know! But trust me, even if you can only afford to save a small amount of money, eventually you’ll have enough and when you bring the Baby Lock home, it will eliminate the awful dread every time you start a new project. Modern technology incorporates features into machines, according to what people who sew like and dislike. Hence a button that takes all of the frustration out!

      @sewwhatalicia1953  5 років тому

      If you only do quilting then you probably don't need a serger. It comes in pretty handy for all other kinds of sewing though.

    • @CatiSews
      @CatiSews 3 роки тому

      If you prewash your fabric, a serger is great for overcasting the edges to avoid raveling. Sergers sew a lot more stitches per inch so they’re a lot faster too. And the cone thread is much cheaper than spools.
      If you want to remove the stitches after drying your fabric, just pull out the needle threads & the other threads fall off.
      You can also make an entire quilt with your serger, which is especially nice if you’re having trouble with raveling fabric.
      I also make a lot of fleece baby blankets ( 1 2/3 yds each) and full sized blankets for adults (2 1/2 - 3 yds depending on height) After serging all the way around - I cut rounded corners with a rotary cutter & a saucer or small bowl first - I turn the knife off & overlap about a half inch then with the needles & presser foot up, I reposition the fabric, lower the presser foot, & then stitch off at a right angle so there aren’t any loops at the edge. I then pull out the 2 needle threads - they will most likely be the 2 threads in the center of the chain. Then I knot all 4 - 2 in each side of the knot - & thread the tails through the stitches, burying them in the fleece.
      This Brother serger is a real work horse. I’ve probably made close to 1,000 fleece blankets & serged many yards of quilt fabric & just recently had it serviced for the 1st time - just because I’d used it so long. Never could do without it long enough earlier. 😁
      If you get this serger, you’ll be wondering how you managed without it. You can probably find it on HSN or Amazon if you don’t find a super deal on eBay or at an estate sale or Craig’s List. Good luck!

  • @sylviamayhew8652
    @sylviamayhew8652 4 роки тому

    You should have tied your new threads on spools to the threads already threaded in the machine and then machined it through and then cut off the original threads. This would have left all the four new threads threaded in the machine, ready to sew.

    • @CatiSews

      You might want to try retreading, starting with the top looper. I’m not sure why the order makes such a difference, but it does. Also, be sure the threads are down in the tension disks. Good luck!
