Great Video as always David! Thanks again. A little tip for everyone maybe even David. I found that if I close the wier door first for a couple seconds all the floating stuff will be sucked down into the basket making it quicker and more sanitary clean out and it really reduces the chance of any floaters to be sucked into the lines and pump basket which I always clean last. Just make sure not to close the door off too long or the skimmer will completely empty and the float diverter will close as its designed to do (Thankfully) then you will have to pull up the float to release it or like your video shows to turn off the suction to get it to float again. If its really full I always use a small kitchen strainer to scoop the floating debris and possible wild life off the top. Thought of this after finding a live bubble bee in my hand after a scoop. Another tip. I use a Sacrificial Zinc Anode puck zip tied in the bottom of my skimmer basket as a handy weight and hopefully the first line of defense against any metal corrosion to my pool parts or heater. I figure all water heaters have them so why not protect my pool too. Thank you David for explaining how important the wier door and float diverter are for efficient skimmer function and safety of the pump running dry. Some people are unaware or don't care or are too cheap to invest in these wonderfully designed necessary devices. Hint hint readers. Haha If you find this info helpful please give me a thumbs up so I know my time wasn't wasted sharing this valuable information and feel free to comment for any reason. Especially if it might help out people like I'm doing. Thanks

I have been helping my wife on an a frequent basis over the past 15 years. I have cleaned a lot of pool, and I have learned a lot from Barbara. Best pool water chemist around. But we disagree on one thing, and according to your video, she is correct. I say the pool should ( usually) be shut off before cleaning the skimmers. As a matter of fact , the skimmer is very full, the suction can be so hard that the skimmer cannot be removed without shutting the pump off. As noted in the video, rodents, pine cones and other vile crap gather in your skimmer. Sometimes it has to wait outside by the weir but when that skimmer comes out, the suction brings it right in, into the pipes, and ( hopefully) end up in the pump basket. On two occasions that I can remember, I had to snake and pressure render the pipe to clear a clog. Granted one was from vacuuming too large objects for the pipe, but the other was a good sized pine cone that snuck in while the pool basket was being cleaned. Running the pump with the basket out leaves an area open that was intended to filter whatever comes in when the basket is out. I would be interested in opinions.

Sometimes you will need to turn the pump off. Most of the time the basket lifts out easily with the pump on. It is a pool by pool thing.

In Arizona the skimmer basket may have a rattle snake in it, so look before you clean.

Just last year I put a new lid on our Pentair pump with the pre-'98 metal clamp. So far it seems to work well! I like how that basket has a handle.

I do have my own company. But I do a lot of sub-contract work. It is kinda weird in my area because there are a ton of pools and not enough qualified pool guys. One guy wanted me to do all of his filters for him one year. I refer work to two guys on a regular basis also. I do sub work for a builder. I get three 1099's plus what I report. Keeps my CPA busy. I also file a Schedule C for two rental properties. My taxes are like a book each year ;)

That's good. I started my own pool business. Still kind of small. Trying to grow. Kind of hard over here in Florida. There's alot of competition. Do you think its better to buy a route or getting them by word of mouth?

I don't need to empty my basket once per week, but I DO check it every single day and empty out whatever is in it, no matter if it's 1 leaf or several. Once a week means the owner is lazy.

Well, it is much worse when a rodent is stuck in a Hayward Navigator. Pulling it out without it tearing it is pretty tough. The last one I had in a cleaner I pulled the tail off along with the bottom half. This was before lunch time. Not nice. I think I have removed at least five rats from cleaners over the years. I had a rat jammed in a G3 cleaner recently. I stunk so bad when I pulled the cleaner out that I ended up throwing the whole diaphragm in the trash, with rat wedged in there...

Your pool is what we refer to in the industry as a "Dog Account." I guess you can't dump it since you
live there;) The pools in this video are my worst -one is just below a 50 year old Maple tree where the leaves are as big as dinner plates. The other one is in the middle of three oak trees. Not the norm here in Southern California though.

I installed the skimmer boy in the door and I almost never have to remove and empty the basket. Cheap and it works really well.

Clean it every week? Try cleaning it a couple dozen times a day..that's what I get for living in a mature wooded area.
