    All that syrup! Is there a store in town that will take the extra off your hands? Tourists pay crazy $$ for locally sourced, sustainable syrup. I paid $9 for a tiny jar once.

      I might jar some of it up and see if I can recoup some of the expenses of buying equipment and such.....would like to do a few giveaways to you guys....but not sure yet how shipping would work

    I'd get and bury as many of those big 1000 gallon or so catchment containers as I could. Bury them with about a foot to foot and a half, and no worries with them freezing. Catch as much as you can so you can make winter a lot better as far as water supply.. All you really need is a shed over them, and buy all your water lines to your home.

    Hi Jay, I dont mind for sure hanging out with you doing the syrup boiling, its your way of life and its enjoyable.. Sometimes the simple water catchment can be the best and if it works for you and Jen thats all that matters.. I am looking forward to your new projects this year Jay, meantime take care, stay well and see you again soon, say hi to Jen..

    jay and jen.that green hose you use for catchment system could be changed to the white RV stle hose that is ppe compliant,no taste or smell!I use one on my system and run my drinking water through a costco purifiy 4 canister system,good drinking water!And those homedepot buckets make know difference for syrup making,after 1 hour of boiling sap anything bad in there is dead man!Your on the right track young man!TAKE CARE

      Hey, thank you so much for the lovely comment and suggestions. I think I will be swapping out that cheap green hose ASAP....but kind of hoping to get the more permanent set up installed quickly and move forward first thing now that the ground is thawed. Best wishes =)

    What most people think is the sky is falling. I like our systems for making electricity. Power from the sun goes back to the inca indians and if they can do it then we can too. I don't care for the fact that although our solar power units say american made, its a loose term for assembly as most of all those units are fabricated in China and if you see how its done, the sky is literally black from the smoke of coal fired plants that fab our Lithium batteries. We don't have a lot of lithium here in the good old usa so panels and other come from a place where people are expendable. My son has eyes on proof of it and has shown me of many plants there while he headed a large mining project there. It is like trying to invent perpetual motion which can come close but no cigar as perpetual power. I keep trying to remember how to make those pumps for water or any liquid that say for instance water... it fills a bucket that then when full drops it down making half of the pump but then it empties and it raises back up to repeat itself. Kind of a jack and jill system and the water is trapped in this system and then pumped for as far as you wish for. Even a small stream will fill a bucket in time so it does work and of course the more water, the faster it works.. I need to do a hands on build just once so it would remain in my noggin

    Those gutter brackets do stink. If you ever lean a ladder against that gutter they pop off. Also the HDPE2 is the plastic type. What also makes it food grade is the mould release agent they use. So not all HDPE2 is food grade.

    I can’t wait for spring. We just got hit with another 8 inches of snow. Hopefully it warms up soon. If you ever do get to the point where you need more buckets for SAP if there is a farm and fleet in your area, they have food safe buckets that are cheaper than Home Depot buckets.

    • @OffgridwithJayandJen
      @OffgridwithJayandJen  Рік тому +1

      Great tip about the buckets.....I bought some extras last year during the worst time and there was a "shortage" of them...yah. So I will check that out next time I need them, thanks. Sorry to hear about the snow.....it is crazy this year.

    Hi J&J! You could build/get a still and distill the rain water, you just need to add some trace minerals (concentrated sea water).

    • @OffgridwithJayandJen
      @OffgridwithJayandJen  Рік тому +1

      Thats a good idea.....I will tell ya, You can really tell the rainwater has no minerals in it when we shower. The Shower water is very soft.....Which I'm still getting use to.

    You can use maple syrup in old fashions. $25.00 to $30.00 a quart for that gold around here. We had high 70 s & 80 s last week, rain last night (sat) all day today (sun) snow tomorrow (mon). Might be sending it your way Jay & Jen. Jay I liked your little grimmis smile at the end , you learn good from Jen 😂.

    Could you put a skirt or screen around the gutter pipe where it dumps into the tank to keep critters and debris from getting into the pool filter sock?

    To keep the gutter brackets from coming loose, once they're in place, bend the tab on the fascia side to hold the top piece. 😊 ❤

    Turn the tank around so the ball valve faces the sun or get some hot water bottles to wrap around it so you can leave it turned off until you need it.
    Might make it easy to use that water in winter (if it ain't frozen) , especially if the line to the house didn't have ice in it. 😅 ❤
