Scott, I bought this thing, about 2 years ago, at a local music store. I took it back, because I couldn't quite figure out how to use it. Mainly, I just wanted the divebomb, doing up to octave dips. The manual with it was not very clear. Possibly the model you are demonstrating here is updated from the one I purchased. Your tutorial is much welcomed. I love to do a Moody Blues bend with orchestral strings sound on my keyboards. Love a lower maintenance type of Melo Tron. The originals, with tape loops were a nightmare for lugging around and keeping operative. Lots of moving parts.
The drop tuning/pitch shifting is a life saver is you only have one guitar, like me, and that one guitar you own has a floyd rose so you can't change the tuning without re-floating the bridge. Now i can play a song in E standard and if the next song happens to be dropped a half step down or what ever i can just push a button and BAM! instantly in tune! You have some great ideas for the whammy. If/When they make it, even if they don't call it the Scott Grove signature pedal, thats what i'll be calling it.
If you use the octave or two octave up or down and a delay pedal you can get something that sounds like a police siren, pretty fun for grooves and funk jams.
You let us know what Digitech says, and we'll get on the bandwagon and call and e-mail them and ask for the Scott Grove (SG) model. I play thru a Johnson Marquis JM 60 and/or my Johnson J Station. Thanks for helping all of us wannabe steel players.
I would tape each end of a paint stick to the pedals, one to the volume and one to the digitech, taped to the very tip. Simultaneous swells. Just a dumbass solution until they finally make it a reality. I used to stick quarters under my wah until I got a digital based one on a multi fx unit that had a range control option.
the volume knob on an adjacent pedal, or on your amp?...i didn't quite understand what ya meant. The goal is to link volume swell to pitch swell, correct?.. I'd appreciate it if you could explain what you did and if it worked alright. Thanks, a.
100% repairable my friend. I take care of them BEFORE that happens on all of my PEDAL pedals. lol (Volume, Wah, Whammy...etc). Put one of these lock washers under the nut that holds the bolts in place on each side of the pedal. You can put it on the inside (cleaner looking), or outside. ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41FMzDowIhL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Wah pedals are great with fixed bridge guitars, and it won't cause tuning errors and string breakages. I would thumbs up this if you didn't disable ratings. Lol
This is. Bar none. The most thorough, comprehensive and entertaining review, of this wonderful product which I own and love, on the whole frickin' internet! You totally could've charged for this. Thanks for your continuing generosity and patience with all of us DMFkrs.
That clean sound is beautiful....as a chorus guy, yes that detune feature slaughters any chorus effect i tried.....i m a shredder type who loves humbuckers, but single coil is best for cleans hands down
Scott, love your videos. I bout this pedal because of this demo. Can you use this pedal to play the two part harmony guitar licks on the Beatles And Your Bird Can Sing. I believe it is played in thirds and 6ths. I don't see any selection going from thirds to sixths. I think it could be done with the foot switch, but thought you might know an easier way. Or maybe anyone following this video may know. Thanks
i literally only bought this pedal to play allong with "Killing in the Name" and literally did not know the APPLICATIONS that this pedal has until i watched this video. i tip my hat off to you Mr. Scott Grove.
Hey to Paul Macfarlane, I've had my Digit Whammy pedal since the late ninety's and the pedal is still a little stiff, just the way I prefer, But when I stop moving that pedal the sound stayed at that pitch or that drop. So from what I've heard from you, someone who really know's the inside's of these pedal's to fix that problem properly.
If I understand your idea correctly, you need a combo of a Whammy, and Volume pedal? You could connect a combo volume/expression pedal to a Boss PS-5 or PS-6, and then have both. I have an Alesis F2 volume/expression pedal, and I figured out that if I connect the expression in/out to one pedal, and the volume in/out to that same pedal, I end up controlling both volume and the expression at the same time (which was unintentional, and undesired). Although, I understand why you'd prefer an all-in-one kind of package.
Just a thought as to how to control volume and harmony at once I would take a small piece of plastic our wood and attach it to the top and bottom of both pedals that way when u move one it moVes the other...just a thought hope it helps Scotty boy! Derek
Great Demo. Thanks Scott. I have a 2012` R8 Les Paul and a Kustom 5H Head and the Kustom 1x12` cab. When volume is not the issue I like it at the 2 o`clock position for O.D. and roll back the volume for clean. At lower volume I have it at 9 o`clock for clean and a JOHNSON Vintage Overdrive pedal that I got last year at the local pawn shop. This is all I have/need for now. I have been learning guitar for 4 years now and like good `O Rock and Roll (Classic rock these days). I will be 51 this Aug.. Keep on Rock`n!!! From Sioux City,Ia.
I think you just sold a lot of pedals for Digitech LOL! Great vid again Scott. Jack White is one of my favorite musicians and he uses one. He uses an original 65 Twin and Deluxe, a Whammy pedal and a Big Muff and that's it. BTW Scott, on the country side he produced an album for Loretta Lynn back in '03 or '04 which she won a Grammy for. I can't think of the name of the album atm, but it did not get radio play and still won. Thanks again man!! Peace
Hi Scott, Great stuff, great fun! Just one thing ONLY; could you please veer away from those horrible "Chinese MELODY Torture" songs during demo so as to ease the suffering a bit? I really enjoy your videos! Tks Jim
You can get lots of Jack White sounds out of this, which is one reason I thought I needed this pedal, but I am learning so much more about it watching this video. Beats the heck out of the owner's manual that came with it.
Hope you are well you answered my question the De tune is like a capo ! You don't have to transpose the chords to change keys . Making a donation on your lesson page that you for your help . I own a Fender VG yes the circuit board went out . No replacement parts . This is sad I love every thing except for the Flattop sounds not good !
He is good with that "Whammy pedal", but I get this strange feeling while looking at him doing this video that his should burst out in song, "SINGING" "By the Dashboard Light's"!
I balked at the run time but I broke it down over three nights. I'm glad I took the time because this was an excellent and *thorough* review/demo. I wanted this pedal for all the tuning options. While it excelled in country music applications (nail down your foot control and put your pedal steel guy on notice), it seemed to turn to mud on the metal side, with the detuning sounding fake and over-processed and the whammy function just sounding gimmicky. Your review showed me that I would not have been happy with this pedal. Thanks for saving me a couple hundred bucks.
Hello, Great Video and idea with the slide. I saw someone mention a Boss pedal that does Pitch and Volume together. Have ou ever tried out the Line 6 M13 or M9? You could pick up a Line 6 M13 and set one bank just as "Pedal Steel". You can use up to 4 effects (assignable) simultaneously. The first effect of that bank could be a volume pedal set to be controlled by Expression pedal 1, you can also set the heel & toe so the volume isn't 0-10, more like 5-10 so it sounds more natural. That would leave the other 3 effects (9 footswitchable within that bank) to be bet to different pitch ratios assigned to the same expression pedal (or put some sort of reverb or whatever in there). If you haven't ever tried one, it might be worth giving it a shot? They sound pretty good, for being a modeler, I prefer analog, but for certain effects and convenience, they aren't bad. I'm not sure how the tracking on their pitch compares with the newer Whammy Pedals? Mission Engineering makes a really nice, heavy duty expression pedal for the Line 6 stuff.
Correct me if I am wrong. If you drop 5 semitones using the right side of the pedal and then combine it with a 4th Interval UP using the whammy side, will that mean you will end up with your original guitar tone?
I usually have my guitar tuned down a half step. I am looking for a pedal to switch it up a half step to standard pitch so I can play standard music when I want. Other pedals I tried can do that but the sound is artificial and with a weird chorus/shimmer in the background. Will this pedal go up a half step cleanly without any background weird shit?
I see on the subject of the country Pedal what you are talking about . If you use the up tune to wet dry or oct you get 12 string sounds like Nashville tuning . I would love to here you play a song where you use the pedal on a backing track .
I'm sure you get a lot of comments but I thought i'd take the time to say I really enjoyed this video! You really showed what a varied pedal this can be, you've made me want to buy one!! Thanks Mr Grove!
So, when can you send me a free pedal? Ha. Just Kidding :) I would love to have that just for tuning to G or open E for slide. Can it do that? I mostly play in standard , too lazy to re-tune all the time. Great demo. Thanks much. Great to hear you got the band back together.
Awesome 👍. You're like "you're like what the hell uses that.?.. That depends on you." Question: with a resonator guitar that has a magnetic and piezo, would it work with the piezo circuit through an acoustic amp? I want to do exactly what you are suggesting. oMG
Not one bite at all. They usually do not say a word, then they take the idea for their own and you'll see the pedal on the market. That's fine with me, as long as I get to buy one someday. lol
You know anyone that could repair my VG circuit board ? I also had a real power supply for it no battery . They should have not stop making the VG Hummbucker was cool add on .
I hear you, the tech was way too cool. It would make for an awesome pedal. I wish I knew who to get in touch with about the circuit board. I would love to get another VG, it was a straight up great guitar even without all the fun stuff.
After watching that and seeing all the amazing things it can do, that pedal is definitely on my radar. I wonder if I'd have to get a new amp though because my Vox AD15VT modeling amp doesn't take too kindly to pedals. I do like my amp but I wouldn't mind having another around. Do you think it would work with that amp? I'm so very tired of changing tunings all the time. It seems that every other song I want to learn or like to play along to, is in a different tuning so that alone, would save me a lot of hassle and my truss rod would definitely thank me for being able to set a tuning and leave it there LOL! Great demo Scott and I like your idea for the pedal steel, Groovy Steel pedal. The things you can do with it are amazing. Would keep me from buying a guitar with whammy bar too so I can save myself a lot of frustration setting it up like I want and just use the damn pedal. It's such a versatile tool I don't see how any guitarist wouldn't want one.
Watching this video made me remember how cool the Whammy is. I need to sell my 4th generation Whammy and get the DT. The DT is the best version yet.Your idea for the country pedal with the volume built into the whammy is a great idea.
Dr Groovy in a band again? hope those guys watched your videos about band practice... on combining the volume swell and pitch bender you could probably rig/slap/attach a light piece of wood across both pedals to connect them to simulate what you were taking about, similar to what you do on the johnson controller with one foot controlling two pedals simultaneously.
I actually did something almost just like it before I turned the camera on. The angle of the 2 pedals were simply too different to pull it off. But, we had the EXACT same idea! With the band thing, we will have one practice only and that will be to simply get the intros, endings and transitions from each song in place. I have all of the songs and keys here and that's all I'll need....just what the differences are between THEIR version and the ORIGINAL and just go to the gigs, wait for that four count and start the show. It'll be fun to do again.
i meant in sub for the volume pedal with an auto wah u don't have to use your foot simultaneously with the whammy. you can set it and just focus on the whammy . anyway thanks for the videos brother.
Thanks a lot for your vid! I Think I'm gonna buy it, sounds very good. Is there some problem or anything when you use the drop tuner and play bends or fast arpeggios on higher notes?
Scott, amazing review as always! Your guitar playing is extremely tasty in all the right places. Thanks for taking the time to help out all of us guitar slingers of all styles and skills. I will take a closer look at this pedal after your review.
Thanks my friend. You can see how close they are to being able to have a CONVINCING steel sound if they would base a NEW pedal on some of the features on here along with the stuff I mentioned. It would be pretty scary cool!
I wish that was possible on these. The ONLY thing I've had that can do that is a Fender VG Strat. It has a knob that does all of the popular open tunings digitally onboard.
I'm assuming it can with some of what you did, but can the pedal take drop D down a full step or two, or does it have to be in standard tuning to work? also have you tried to see what kind of crazy sounds you can get with >6 string guitars when using this?
Howdy. Yeah, it will take whatever tuning your guitar is PHYSICALLY tuned to and drop it or raise it etc. So, if you are in standard drop D tuning and want to take your entire guitar down a half step, the drop tuning will stay intact. You can even play an mp3 player through it and the sound will simply change keys. So, if you are trying to figure out a song that is RECORDED in F, play it through your whammy pedal, drop the tuning down a half step if you plan on playing it in E, and the whole song will play in E so you can learn it the way you'll REALLY be playing it. That's another thing that NOBODY thinks to do with these. lol
groovydjs Thanks. Was trying to decide between one of these and another guitar or two for lower tunings. Think I'll go with this to save money. Just discovered your videos today so I have a lot of things to go through, but I had two further unrelated questions... 1st, I was wondering if you have had a chance to play with one of these www.musiciansfriend.com/pages/line-6-amplifi?icid=205105. Seems pretty cool if it works as advertised, think might also give some basic guitars tones more similar to the line 6 guitars with 25+ tones and some of the functions of the guitar you used in this video. 2nd, any recommendations on a luthier program in/near Wisconsin? Would be interested in learning not only repair, but how to build. thanks again.
I have not. Thank you for the head's up. I'll go look for a demo on it now. I don't care if folks take my ideas.....just as long as I have something that gets THAT job done. lol Thanks again my friend. OK, I found it my man. Very sweet! It makes sense that it would end up being a device that requires a Roland GK pickup. It's a clean way of doing it for sure. All 6 strings are programmable to bend individually to any pitch. The one and only thing that is missing (which MAY be programmable....and why wouldn't it be) is the option of making patches that do the volume swells with the bends. I have yet to locate that patch, but since it's a typical GK piece of hardware/software, the learning curve will be minimal and the volume swell would surely be there and quickly assignable at different rates and to reinitialize the swell from note to note or if it perceives "X" amount of "dead time" in order to grab a bit more of the REALISTIC part of a volume pedal being used as it WOULD BE used in a real world situation instead of a digital quirkyness thing. Thanks again for the head's up!
You should have a listen to it, i'd suggest This town needs guns or Mylets. I wouldn't call it "noise" hahaha I know you're a country man but you should give it a try
Scott, I bought this thing, about 2 years ago, at a local music store. I took it back, because I couldn't quite figure out how to use it. Mainly, I just wanted the divebomb, doing up to octave dips. my goodness..i had no clue this is what it did. i want one...awesome demo sir, you rock as usual
wow i was just looking at these on Ebay pondering if i should by one YEAH im buying it great demo very informative thanks man .
This has got to be the best review of a Whammy DT ever made
If you use the octave or two octave up or down and a delay pedal you can get something that sounds like a police siren, pretty fun for grooves and funk jams.

Have you had any luck getting Digitec to go forward with a country pedal?
I would tape each end of a paint stick to the pedals, one to the volume and one to the digitech, taped to the very tip. Simultaneous swells. Just a dumbass solution until they finally make it a reality. I used to stick quarters under my wah until I got a digital based one on a multi fx unit that had a range control option.
the volume knob on an adjacent pedal, or on your amp?...i didn't quite understand what ya meant. The goal is to link volume swell to pitch swell, correct?.. I'd appreciate it if you could explain what you did and if it worked alright. Thanks, a.
Am I missing something….? How do you truly emulate a pedal steel ‘solo’ when everything is double-stops, i.e., without any single notes?
You can just kick the pedal off when doing single notes.
all my whammies have a problem not returning to normal pitch when heeled back to the highest position and it instantly drifts... repairable?
100% repairable my friend. I take care of them BEFORE that happens on all of my PEDAL pedals. lol (Volume, Wah, Whammy...etc). wow..a whole hour and a half review? I have to get one.
Genius!
I'm not sure how you can make one and a half hours of talking about a pedal I don't own watchable, but you do.
LOL, thanks my friend.
Wah pedals are great with fixed bridge guitars, and it won't cause tuning errors and string breakages. I would thumbs up this if you didn't disable ratings. Lol
That thing is ridiculously oversized.
Not at all, you're just used to very small things.
HAHA PENIS JOKE
@@groovydjs LOL
This is. Bar none. The most thorough, comprehensive and entertaining review, of this wonderful product which I own and love, on the whole frickin' internet! You totally could've charged for this. Thanks for your continuing generosity and patience with all of us DMFkrs.
Hi scott !
big fan from Iran !
thanx for all your videos
learned a lot from you and your ideas over the last two years
keep up the good work
I'm an old school guy, but this is the coolest thing I've ever seen or heard.
That clean sound is beautiful....as a chorus guy, yes that detune feature slaughters any chorus effect i tried.....i m a shredder type who loves humbuckers, but single coil is best for cleans hands down
Scott, it is nice to see an actual series of uses for this thing other than just cranking on the bitch and making noise with it.
So this is how to use this thing in a musical context.. interesting.

So, basically using the 2-octave whammy, you can play ANYTHING with just your one favourite chord?
That's just cheating...
Check out what sound you can get out of your Whammy using the Line 6 DL4 in REVERSE mode:

Guess I have to trust anyone who looks so much like Lowell George. Entertaining and informative video. Thanks Scott G.

Would the Eventide PitchFactor Harmonizer Pedal work just as well or maybe even better without any lag or artifiacts? Just more expensive.
I find that Digitech stuff really gets my tiennis going its the onlly company that I have had that problem Love the sound however

talk for five hours ill still watch hahaha :: good job man :

I would love to have that just for tuning to G or open E for slide. Can it do that? I mostly play in standard , too lazy to re-tune all the time. Great demo. Thanks much.
Great to hear you got the band back together.
The pedal you make it sound like old Leslie organ cabinet and a steel . Hey it would work for a Hawai steel
The Digitech vocalist unit does pick up guitar (via guitar plugged into it) to do the intelligent harmonies
Awesome 👍. You're like "you're like what the hell uses that.?.. That depends on you." Question: with a resonator guitar that has a magnetic and piezo, would it work with the piezo circuit through an acoustic amp? I want to do exactly what you are suggesting. oMG

Great demo Scott and I like your idea for the pedal steel, Groovy Steel pedal. The things you can do with it are amazing. Would keep me from buying a guitar with whammy bar too so I can save myself a lot of frustration setting it up like I want and just use the damn pedal. I actually rather like chorus BECAUSE of that warble.

I own a VG from 200-7 now my circuit board went out cant find a replacement and Roland stop making boards for the G5 Roland guitar .
Someone just warned me about that in the past week or so.
Never apologize for playing country Scott,IMHO its a lot harder to play then rock, and better music besides!
That's a great pedal!
35 years experience, lessons for 10,change your name, you evidently dont know shit!
ever tried an auto wah with the whammy for the pedal steel licks ur trying to do?
Auto wah? Nope. They've never been used on pedal steel for anything other than when folks were trippin' on acid.
i meant in sub for the volume pedal with an auto wah u don't have to use your foot simultaneously with the whammy. you can set it and just focus on the whammy . anyway thanks for the videos brother.
Play good vibrations next time you use this pedal in a video! lol
Thanks a lot for your vid! I Think I'm gonna buy it, sounds very good. Is there some problem or anything when you use the drop tuner and play bends or fast arpeggios on higher notes?
You should be in the Whammy Hall of MONEY
Scott, do you still have a standalone V station console? Was considering one a long time ago when I bought my first Pod 2.0 console.
***** I've never owned a Line 6 product.
Scott, amazing review as always! Your guitar playing is extremely tasty in all the right places. Thanks for taking the time to help out all of us guitar slingers of all styles and skills. I will take a closer look at this pedal after your review.
As a country player myself, you just sold me on this pedal
Whammy DT in action!
John Rox - Digitech Whammy DT - It's a Rainy Day (Studio Session)
I bought this pedal just got it . I love it thank you so much for making this video . Hope you are well 😀
Glad you like it! All is groovy on this end. Thanks for that.
I use a RP-500. Man that would be a good idea to do one just for country
Thanks, Scott. I love pedal demo videos. I can watch them for hours. You are right, most of the demos are too short.
You are amazing Scott! I had no idea you could implement a pedal to this degree! Wow!
Thanks my friend. You can see how close they are to being able to have a CONVINCING steel sound if they would base a NEW pedal on some of the features on here along with the stuff I mentioned. It would be pretty scary cool!
so can you still do the steel guitar bends and shifts without the Midi pick up on the
Strat? That would sell me on the Digitech Whammy DT
Yes, no need for any MIDI junk to do the steel bends etc. Any guitar is fine and dandy.
can you do the steel sounding bends on a normal Whammy pedal or just the DT ? Thanks!
Michael Howard thats a really stupid question lol
Doc how or can I set the tuning to /open G to play Honky Tonk Women by the Rolling Stones
I wish that was possible on these. The ONLY thing I've had that can do that is a Fender VG Strat. It has a knob that does all of the popular open tunings digitally onboard.
32: 04 sounded like end of " paranoid" and Luke's wall .
You are correct you have done a grand job of this ! You are the best ! I am 71
Thank you so very much my friend.

Did Scott ever get his steel pedal?
scott grove never stop
Great video scott. cheers
👍👍👍👍
Good stuff ! Thanks again, Scott.
the drop Scott The Digitech Drop.
hey, have you checked out the BOSS GP-10, I think they implemented a lot of your suggestions in it!
Thanks again for the head's up!
thanks for a great review.
This video was incredibly useful. After watching it, I've decided that I want to buy a whammy pedal (or maybe a Johnson amp)
Good luck finding a Johnson amo
***** There are ALWAYS a few on eBay every single day. I've never seen a time when at least 3 or 4 weren't for sale. This would be in the USA though.
Scott, have you tried the Yamaha thr series?
Tristan Laing Is that Yamaha an amp, guitar, pedal, keyboard, motorcycle?
Yamaha thr10, it's a digital modelling guitar amplifier. Good joke though.
Jesus how many amps do you own?
Probably around 15.
Do you have any videos on your Digitech rack unit?
I actually don't. I'll have to do one for sure.
Thank you sir! Would be nice to hear a decent demo of that unit. Most of the demos are poop.
ArriCAT5e You want a decent demo? Shit.....putting the pressure on me now. lol
groovydjs
Uhhh I dunno.. Just do what you do. Lol
I've been planing to do a video of my PC based guitar rig.
I think you might like it.
I gave it 34 mins... I'm out... nice job but I'm not country
I'm actually probably the only country player that uses these. Mostly a metal thing.
groovydjs I'd say these are use more in genres like Indie, Post Rock and Math Rock
Not trying to sound like an asshole, I'm just saying :P
Spazmatronicmonkey What in the world is Math Rock. lol I love how people keep coming up with goofy names for "noise". Just sayin. :P
You should have a listen to it, i'd suggest This town needs guns or Mylets. I wouldn't call it "noise" hahaha
I know you're a country man but you should give it a try
lol Your loss. This was a pretty amazing demo.
