Riverview Park is the loss that hurts the most for me, for how iconic it was, and for the fact that the owners just randomly decided they didn't want to run it anymore.
@@JNattyBoi Definitely. I'm really curious as to if they would have stayed an independent park or not, if it'd have the same fate as Willow Grove eventually, or if it'd go on to make its own chain of amusement parks.
Thanks! I loved seeing the old coasters. Today, in Houston we have NOTHING!... no big amusement park, no big coaster. Why?...no money. Sad, for the kids' sake. I'm glad that I grew up when we had two large amusement parks, during two different time periods.
I had ridden Zingo growing up and loved it, knowing it was a historic coaster. I wasn’t aware that the Wildcat in Frontier City also had such historic value as well, though it’s not surprising. Thanks for the info!
After watching this, I read up on the park I frequented as a kid, Lagoon, and was honestly surprised that it had quite a bit notoriety in multiple ways. From the nearly century old Miller & Baker's Roller Coaster (colloquially referred to as "The White Roller Coaster" to differentiate it from the other attractions before they stopped repainting it), to Colossus-one of two Schwartzkopt Double Looping coasters left in the states, the relocated Schwartzkopt Jet Star 2, and their recent trend of designing much of their new coasters predominantly in house rather than using third parties.
I genuinely really enjoy these videos! Their production quality is unironically so good, I just assumed that you had like 2k subs or more. Keep up the amazing work, can't wait to see part 4!
Honestly, YOU NEED MORE SUBSCRIBERS. These are such fantastic videos with great research, information, and editing. Keep doing what youre doing!. It is absolutely amazing and I cannot believe that you only have 180 subscribers.
I have just found your channel today, 20 May, 2021, and I am thrilled to see your videos. I have been to Riverview in Chicago as a young child and still have vivid memories of that experience almost 70 years ago. Have you ever written about Willow Grove park outside of Philadelphia? There was a Thunderbolt there and it was amazing. This was the park where my grade school had its annual end of year picnic. In 7th grade we were able to get the nuns to ride the Thunderbolt with us. Again, thank you for the great memories!, Ray Moderski.
Thank you so much for the comment, I really enjoyed reading about your experience growing up with Willow Grove park. I haven’t done any videos on that particular park, but there’s a reddit user who has posted a lot about the park recently. Here’s one of their posts if you’re interested: www.reddit.com/r/rollercoasters/comments/mq73sq/trolley_park_tuesday_willow_grove_park_through/?
i’m so glad you included Lakeside!! it’s My home park and I don’t see it talked about a lot. Absolutely love the place and it has an incredible history behind it as well. There’s a book about it that I recommend you read called Lakeside: a century of fun.
I'll definitely check out the book! It's a shame Lakeside doesn't get talked about too much, it's such a historic park. Really hope to make it out there someday. Thanks for the comment!
In the 1960's some traditional amusement parks started to emulate the success of Disney Land by adding more modern rides and themed sections such as Cedar Point and Geauga Lake.
UA-cam recommended this channel because of Rollercoaster Tycoon but I stuck around for the history. Great videos, I'd love to see more content like this. You for sure deserve more subs. I've ridden the Blue Streak in Cedar Point. Classic, that was my park growing up.
9:33 And then decades later, with the opening of Space Mountain, Disney did finally have a wild mouse on steroids. Really, watch the immersion killing lights on Space Mountain POVs. It's a freakin' wild mouse.
Ha! Yeah you're not wrong, it's basically a highly immersive enclosed wild mouse. Come to think of it, Disney also installed Primeval Whirl at Animal Kingdom, so they've definitely reversed their stance on wild mouse coasters
Haha yeah I didn't delve into it too much, but the Trump family (particularly Donald Trump's father, Fred Trump) played a big hand in the fall of Coney Island in the 1960's and 70's
A piece of the dark ages but from one amusement park (Waldameer in Erie PA) in 1938 the park lost their only "Intense" Coaster (Ravine Flyer 1) due to the park's only death and didn't get another one until 2004 with the Mauer coaster called "Steel Dragon" and a few years later "Ravine Flyer 2" Opened up with pretty much the original layout (Station was moved and the Bridge is an airtime hill instead of a dip) Also, Conneaut Lake Park is still around and has a few new rides for the season (Eyerly Octopus, Larson Dizzy Dragon, and a Slide) but Blue Streak is SBNO for 2021 but will most likely reopen in 2022 due to COVID hitting the park badly after a Financial Battle in the 2010s but did lose the Tumble Bug
According to RCDB they've been building steel coasters since the late 1800's (rcdb.com/r.htm?order=-8&ty=1&ot=2), most are scenic railway-type rides (like Montaña Suiza, which is an amazing looking ride by the way) or tiny kiddie coasters. Many consider Roller Coaster at Hanayashiki to be the first modern, full size steel roller coaster, but it's certainly up for debate
Another bad period was 2005 to 2010, not nearly as bad as this but lots of parks and rides were lost to the Great Recession and $4 a gallon gasoline. Wonder how many parks and coasters we will lose to COVID, 2020 was such a bad year for amusement parks and while things are looking up in the US Europe and Asia are still disasters
RIP Blue Streak, a piece of coaster history now gone forever.
the one at CP is still there o.o
I stumbled upon your Roller Coaster Tycoon video and wound up here. Am now subscribed.
Sweet! Welcome to the channel :)
Riverview Park is the loss that hurts the most for me, for how iconic it was, and for the fact that the owners just randomly decided they didn't want to run it anymore.
Yeah Riverview park is truly tragic. Imagine its coaster collection today if it was able to stick around
@@JNattyBoi Definitely. I'm really curious as to if they would have stayed an independent park or not, if it'd have the same fate as Willow Grove eventually, or if it'd go on to make its own chain of amusement parks.
Or having the park struggle after Great America opened
Appreciate you including Zingo on your list. As a Tulsan, I have many fond memories of the now-defunct Bell's Amusement Park.

Same here. This guy deserves ten thousand subs.
Love the music in these videos!

You're doing an awesome job with your videos. They're very informative and entertaining, and I personally really like your music choices haha
Thanks so much! Had a lot of fun choosing the music for this one, glad you liked it :)
Comet (Crystal Beach) also reused parts of Cyclone for its construction

@@JNattyBoi Thank you for the suggestion, I did enjoy reading the blog. Hope to talk again soon! Ray Moderski.
@@JNattyBoi I read the suggested article, but do you know of any ratings/pictures of the Willow Grove Thunderbolt?
Beautiful series and BEAUTIFUL video, well done. I sent this to friends who also have interest in RCT and they loved it good job seriously.

Hey thanks so much! Glad to hear people are enjoying this series :)
You used fucking Pegasus at Olympus to describe the traditionally rickety coaster I'm dead lmao
Lol i couldnt not use that part where it tries to yank riders’ heads off
Watched all three videos in the series. Really enjoyed them. Hope to see more in the future.
Thanks so much - more are on the way!
I really enjoy your videos! I found you through the reddit post of your latest video. Looking forward to part 4!

Really enjoying your videos this series. Can't wait for part 4 to come out!
Awesome to hear! Thanks for the support
This is such excellent content. So well researched. Thank you for this series, man.
Hey thanks so much! Really glad you enjoyed it
When this series is done you should make a video to see each coaster brand it's history.. I really like your video's
That's a good idea! And thank you, appreciate the comment
Love the series so far. Eager to see more. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!
Do a series on the history of different companies like gci cci rmc ptc etc
Unfortunately, Blue Streak, at Conneaut Lake Park is gone forever now. 😫
13:58 "...high-rises, strip malls and other soul-less commercial development."
I see what you did there. LMFAO!! 😆

Only thing in this comment is, didn't Comet at Waldameer open in the 1950s?
This aged like fine milk
9:18 DAMN that looks painful!
But from what i've heard, the first and oldest steel coaster is Montaña Suiza at Monte Igueldo, Spain

Wow, I didn't know that, and I'm from Spain! That's one I'd love to ride someday! :D
I wish Matterhorn was still "quiet and comfortable". My back and neck can say otherwise lul
Ha! I've never ridden it but it does look a bit janky from the POVs I've watched. Not sure how Walt would feel about it today
When are we gonna see episode 4?
I have some other video ideas I might prioritize in the immediate future, but I’m hoping to release episode 4 sometime later this summer!
Steeplechase was actually moved to Pirate World in Flordia, if memory serves. Don't know what happened to it after that park closed.

youtube algorithm brought me here
Love the Zelda music
Thanks! Glad someone picked up on that, thought it fit well with the video’s somber tone
Then Kings Island comes out of nowhere with The Beast restarting the roller coaster craze
3:25 THATS IT! ITS WEST VIRGINIA
what u don't know about coasters is not worth knowing.
