Spencer has been a revelation this season, when did he suddenly become a deadly clutch shooter?? The utter ballsiness of that game-tying 3, 3 steps behind the line, damn.

He missed a game-tying shot last UAAP season 82 in the do or die game vs UST. I'm sure he worked on that shot the whole offseason and it's showing with 2 clutch shots vs Ateneo
Also helped that he played in AUS/NZ in a semi pro league during the pandemic so he is in top shape.

UP's Spencer hit another big 3. What's impressive about Spencer is that although he doesn't do anything flashy or exceptionally well, he does a little bit of everything. All-around player. May not be explosive or athletic but plays tough and seems to be mentally tough. Spencer sort of reminds me of another "halfer" (half-Filipino) back in the day who became a star in the UAAP and a solid role player in the PBA. Around the same height and built, too. His name is Dwight Lago. Played for La Salle.

The turning point was Ricci’s block to Mamuyac. Tamayo’s 2 missed free throws paved the way for Lucero’s 3-point play. Diouf’s tip in to a pass to Kouame caused a turnover… Then came the cold blooded 3-pointer by Spencer. And few may have noticed, but it was Tamayo’s defense on Kouame during the last seconds of the 4Q that made him lose the ball. Defense was the key to this well-deserved come from behind win by UP.
Ang nagpatalo si Kouame! Hindi nakuha ang defensive rebound sa missed shot ni Lucero, na follow-up tuloy, tapos yung error niya sa bandang huli, nawala tuloy yung bola! Well, ganyan lang ang laro! In fairness, ang ganda ng depensa ng UP!

More than Spencer’s big three to tie, it was his game long brilliant defense on Ildefonso. Great example of a modern 3 and D wing. Lucero’s heart also showed in the end of regulation. But Diouf fouling out was a blessing in disguise for UP. Ateneo uncharacteristically played out of their system and execution, trying to eat up Kouame’s mismatch every play. Naging pilit, naging predictable. Props to that physical UP defense in overtime to force multiple violations.

rivero's defense on the last quarter and ot were a game changer for it gave the ball to up. lucero's points are a hype-up for the up squad cuz it's time for them to catch up. and the clutch shooter, spencer!! hello? delivering 3's here and there, a deadly player

Lucero is a great replacement for Kobe Paras. Masipag sa rebound, matalino sa court at never say die attitude.

UP is starting to manifest the "NSD attitude" with all these come-from-behind victories. In basketball, they say that the "team reflects or mirrors the coach". So I guess we can assume that the coach of UP is mentally tough and will not go down without a fight.

Lucero and Spencer was huge in this game. There has not been a lot of talks about them coming into the season, but here they are.

Sa nakita ko sa highlights, hindi pinaset ng UP ang half court defense ng Ateneo. Early attack kaagad...on the other hand, maganda depensa ng UP. Fast active hands sa depensa, forcing turnovers.
And, UP studied well the offensive plays of Ateneo. Ilang beses na nag adjust si coach Tab. As one commenter here noticed, naging predictable on offense down the wire ang Ateneo, palagi kay Kuame. Tamayo has active hands on defense. He also knows well the habits of Kuame, kasi kakampi sila dati sa Gilas.
Super effective ung full court press ng UP, it really threw ADMU off their normal offensive sets and rhythm. If ever UP wins it all (and I hope they do), it will be because of this grit and grind defense. Given na UP has the offensive firepower, but now with matching prolific D? Things are looking great for the Fighting Maroons.
Dlsu was the character game for up, it was the cramming maroons at its finest. Like what we saw in this game. So far:
Major upset (elims win against admu);
Major comeback (dlsu game)

Im an Atenean but kudos to UP for winning. During the frst dew games, they were really struggling when it comes to defense and i was like: pagnalampasan nila to grabe na because one of the best offensive teams sila this season eh. They really did, they are now great both offense and defense.

Even before, back in s82, I know that Spencer will make a big impact here in UAAP. All I can say is that he deserves all the recognition.

Blessing in disguise fouling out ni Diouf. Sobrang tentative ng mga tira. Halatang kabado pag si Kouame naka abang sa paint. Butii na-maintain (na improve pa nga) defense nung nawala sya at nagpaka aggressive si Lucero sa wakas. Great work by Tamayo on both ends as well.

Hirap din talaga kasi alam nya di nya kaya sa bungguan sa sobra bigat ni Kouame. Sana makapag gameplan coaches na mas mabawasan hirap nya sa offense. Preferably Lucero/Tamayo play making kesa sa small guards. Para malaki laki nasa pick at di basta basta mag ddrop si Kouame.

@@starskyhutch9303 I disagree, he was exceptional on defense not only on Kouame, but also on the wings and guards of Ateneo..it is very rare for a big with his stature in particular to be able to cleanly swipe the ball from guards to disrupt their offense..as defense clearly won this game, he was a big part of it until he fouled out..

The triple tower of UP plays a big role against Kouame . . Tamayo is young and energetic Lucero very athletic Diouf's elongated arms and height for rebounding . He must develop how to handle the ball well . Guards' rotation is ok. I like their agility that can match the hustle of the opponents . Happy to see that under Monteverde they know how to apply the pressure defense making the other team vulnerable to many turnovers . But they should not do it only in the 4th quarter and critical period. Hopefully and praying that they get the crown . Consistency is a must . Stay focused . Play the game hard . Rise to the challenge . Bring the crown in Diliman . Always have faith in Divine Providence 🙏.

This UP team may not be their most talented team ever but it goes to show that once teamwork and determination pays off it can beat any talent. UP had a great game but the battle is far from over, Ateneo will surely bounce back bigger. They just need to keep this intensity next game.
I agree, back when they had Kobe Paras, and JDL, they havent won against Ateneo. Now, they have gritty and effective role players that complement very well.
Ano ka ba napakalakas nang team na ito, these are definitely one of their best team assembled, They had the super rookie tamayo, a clutch shooter spencer, they had versatile athletes like rivero and lucero and most of all a reliable big man who is about 7 feet tall....
jd cagulangan's quarterbacking is overlooked... in the mold of dindo pumaren, olsen racela, hector calma.. all these great finishes, andun siya setting up the plays.
Imagine, UP is a rebuilding team going up against a more experienced ATENEO (In terms of finals appearance) and UP played less than 2 days versus La Salle...wala pang masyadong pahinga ang muscles nyan...still in CLOUD 9!

@@mulaaa272 to be fair, it's a completely new core na puro rookie pa. the 4 NU boys, Cagulangan only played in 4 games for DLSU na garbage time pa. Diouf galing CEU, only Ricci, CJ, and James are truly experienced UAAP players.
@@mulaaa272 yes po...basically majority ng old players ng UP had left or graduated. If you noticed, puro rookies or first time in the UAAP. Ang may experience na lang talaga sa seniors level, RICCI, CJ, JAMES, NOAH. The rest are first timers + coach nila is a rookie coach in the SENIORS. So basically bagong bago. Don't say because they used to be playing in juniors div, that's counted. This is a whole different team..OK. Maganda talaga yung recruited chips kasi may talent talaga even before coming in. Consistency nila as a team is still in question eh.

Spencer missed an open three in the semis to tie the game in season 82. It was the best open three anyone got that night, and he blew it. He won't let that happen again. Lucero is an absolute beast and is like the Mike Phillips of UP. And Tamayo for ROY
