    I rece9ntly bought one , the rod is doing an excellent job both on dry and nymph fishing.
    I would like reassure everyone on about it's dry fly performances, when used on the 9.8 ft length, without double haul one false cast and the rod reaches 60 ft easily and precise, I'm using Scientific Angler SBT wf3 and Cortland 444 silk DT 3 wt ,Which I adore for fine and specific dry fly fishing.
    The rod has plenty of power and excellent performances.

    I recently bought the GR80 Streamflex plus 10ft 3#. It has exactly the same features as the Wing - with a stripper guide low down on the butt section. With the 12" extension it makes just over 10'10". The only feature the GR80 doesn't have is the snake guide before the tip ring. I picked it up brand new from GAC for £195, which I think is a steal! Assumingly making way for the Wing.

    Again I have the Gr80 Plus 9'6/10ft 3 wt. Interestingly I bought a line guide to whip closer to the butt and also some lead washers to put on the butt screw to help balance it at 10ft with the rod extended for euro nymphing. So nice to see they have changed those two things. Brave indeed! We need more bravery in the fly fishing world.

      The extension on that one is 6" rather than 12" isn't it?
      Greys must have seen your rod as they've done exactly what you thought it needed!

    Forced to buy one at half price when Greys couldn’t replace a top section of a streamflex GR70. And haven’t looked back. A delightful rod to fish with for mostly average sized trout and grayling but has handled much larger trout on a fast river. Agree with you- a pretty perfect double solution.

    So you failed to say if you bought or it was loaned to you.. I think this is important to viewers, and shout be mentioned right from the start?
    Take a look at the Echo Shadow, which has the extension and additional weights for balance.

    I love grays rods and reels. I own 5 rods and 4 reels. The latest purchase was the greys Lance 6w , feels like a 4 weight. Lovely dry fly rod. The GR60’s are also a great rod.

    Hi Andy - Great review. I have the previous model GR80 Streamflex Plus, 3-weight, 10feet. It has a guide low on the butt, and extension, like the new one. It has worked very well for me for dry fly with WF4 (for shortish casts up to max 40 feet) or a DT3, and with weighted nymphs and indicator. For casting fly line I found the extension made the rod notably slower but it's useful for line management on the water. It's at its limit pushing a bushy mayfly into a sharp wind, though. I do wish mine had snakes on the tip (preferably all through)! The new ones already seem to be on sale for less than list price (which is a bit high, I agree).

      Interesting, I was sure the last time I saw the GR80 it was configured differently, I must be getting old!

      @@IBandAndyFishing Hi Andy - I wanted to buy the GR80 10' Streamflex #4 at the time (no butt ring on bottom section; no extension) for dry fly but was sent the GR80 10' Streamflex plus #3 (very like the Wing you review) instead because they had no others available. This was Covid time and shops had run out of tackle. Anyway I kept it and have been very happy with it.

    I actually took my Vision Nymph Hero 10ft #3 out for a dry fly session on the Dove this weekend. It performed brilliantly. I'm fairly certain any 10ft #3 would suit dry fly fishing.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  Рік тому

      I must admit I found the Hero a little delicate fit dry fly fishing, but maybe that's just my casting stroke rather than the rod. It's a great stick though isn't it?!

    • @JWhite-Fishing
      @JWhite-Fishing Рік тому +1

      @@IBandAndyFishing It was definitely delicate. I fished it with a Maxcatch gold #3 line which I believe is slightly under weight for a #3. I've only ever used a Redington Trout Classic #4 rod before trying the Hero so I don't have much basis for comparison. I'd love to hear your opinion on the Onki rods, as I'm looking at buying one.

I'd also be interested to hear if there are any other contenders in the £300 range that might be a better option. I'm a bit of a Vision fanboy though so I might go for the Onki anyway 😂

    Great in depth review, not sure I would be spending that kind of money on a "jack of all trades" I do have a few original streamflex rods and much prefer the understated olive green colour and branding, I would probably carry a specific nymphing rod (Maxcatch) rather than expect one rod to do all.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  Рік тому

      It really splits people, this one. Some folks just prefer to carry one rod, and I do understand it. Certainly this is the best compromise rod I've seen so far, I'd gladly use this as the jack of all trades!

  • @stephennewton3980
    @stephennewton3980 Рік тому

    I always enjoy your reviews and this is no exception. I have not fished this rod, although I have handled it at the Sportfish HQ. I agree that it is a really clever piece of design. I just wonder if it may be a great solution looking for a real problem. On balance, I myself would prefer to carry two rods, each built for a specific purpose. For the price of the Wing one could get two great rods such as the Vision Hero or Guideline Elevation, one specifically for nymphing and one for dry fly work. Like you I felt that the Wing could be viewed as "serviceable", rather than outstanding, and I'm not sure I would want to pay c. £450 for "serviceable". Just a view.

    That red bit looks a bit garish. I've seen them in the tackle shop and it does make them stand out from the rest. More dry fly rods could do with the butt ring a bit closer to the handle. I used to be fussy about keeper rings, but I've abandoned them now. To prevent the fly line/leader knot going through the tip ring I pass the leader round the reel and use a rod ring as the keeper ring.

    • @IBandAndyFishing

    Hi Andy. As mentioned by yourself and comments below, the cork handle does look untidy. Do you have any idea about what has happened to the concept of carbon handles? I put one on the last rod that I built and am very pleased with it, so a little surprised that they haven't been adopted by any of the major manufacturers. However if one is willing to spend a little time I don't think it is a difficult task to fill and sand a cork handle if you need to and it would probably take quite a lot of usage to get to this point. As for this concept of a rod that does everything, I wonder if one could buy two cheaper rods for a similar amount of cash in order to cover the intended fishing methods. Another thought provoking review from you, many thanks.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  Рік тому

      A few brands have tried different handles, and there always seems to be a poor reaction. It'll take a while to get consumers used to cork alternatives I think
