Fred can you tell me why some of these when they are restored have more of that "bell" type sound that the later ones were known for and some have more of a Wurlitzer type "bite" sound that I prefer, can you make a 75 sound more like the older ones that have more I guess what they call bit then bell sound? The unit that you are demonstrating seems to have that nice "bite" to it did you guys intentionally make it that way when restoring it? Because it's sounds fantastic and of course you're playing is tremendous which brought out the best in it and I have to say your left hand on that bass unit was simply amazing I'm sure Ray manzarek would be proud watching that holy crap you definitely would intimidate any bassist auditioning for your group I play bass lol.
Btw, is it necessary to have the Fender bass unit if you have an 88 Rhodes suitcase? Can you get the exact same tone from the base notes on the 88 or is there a difference in the bass unit? I have an 88 which I think is about from 1974 that I am considering sending to you guys that's why I am asking these questions. Thanks, Bob M.

Hello Polara01 - Thank you for watching!
A piano with a proper setup and "matched tines" (where all tines are observed for performance, underperforming tines replaced, etc.) will respond throughout a wide dynamic range. When played heavy, the desired dynamic response is known as "bark" or "bite". The same piano is capable of a "bell" tone when played with a lighter touch and eq'd with more treble.
You can get a similar bass tone from your 88, but when eq'd for bass, chords might sound overpowering if played simultaneously. Having a separate bass piano allows for different amps and eq's for bass and right-hand parts. Additionally, we voice bass pianos differently than the lower end of a piano.
      Hope this helps!
      -Fred

@@derfsup I'd reckon that new hammer tip strike helps too, with that bell tone. I love that the lids were left off for this vid. Really let's you hear the mechanical noise of the keys hitting the bed, the hammer throw hitting the tine, the fall of the hammer and that glorious chirpy recoil of the damper returning to the tine. It's like the Rhodes equivalent of a chunky guitar pick, it's got grit to it. Sounds great.
      ...and the bass playing!!
      Well done, Fred.

Hi there. The piano bass has the same octave range from the 88 piano? Is it an octave lower? Thank you.

These piano basses start on an E note, E1, which is also the lowest E that an 88-key can produce, assuming that the 88-key piano starts on the A0 note. So the piano is a small set of the 88-key.
