In fact he got into some trouble recently for saying that he still admired rowling for writing the books and called her a “genius”. With the backlash he got on the internet I’m not surprised he’s hesitant to say anything ever again.

Also, you have to remember it's not only fear about work, there are a lot of nutters out there who could mean famous ppl harm if they didnt like where they stood on certain issues (can you imagine going about every day not knowing if someone you pass on the street wants to hurt you). Plus, he has a lot of fans on both sides of the divide so probably feels immense obligation to be compassionate to them. So I don't agree he is being spineless. Could he do more? Maybe.
