33,000 Photos Later: A Review of the Nikon Zf

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- So I got my Nikon Zf near the end of 2023 and have since shot over 33,000 images with the camera, and a lot of video as well. I have used the Nikon Zf for everything from street photography, to portrait sessions and even some profession video work as well. I have love a lot about what this camera has to offer, but feel there are a few misconceptions of its design, and a few places where the camera could still be improved.
Please let me know what your thoughts are on the camera, and maybe I am missing something else that you think is amazing or needs improving on the Nikon Zf.

People considering 24MP as 'low' is absolutely bonkers to me.
Thats my favorite type of review. Thank you!
My pleasure!! Happy to hear you liked it!
Thanks for the review! I've been using my ZF since the summer of 2024. It would be great if Nikon could add 4K 120p slow-motion feature to the ZF.
Ya, that would be amazing if they could do that!
Gorgeous images, and I love my ZF. Keep up the great work!
@@felm.974 thank you!! Much appreciated and happy to hear you love your Zf too ❤️
Jason, nice Model you have !
the nikon recipes/simulations are really good, but you have to lower the strength done at least 50%. They're too OP at default settings
@@johnf4659 oh, good information! Thanks, maybe I’ll give them a second chance.
In regards to the film simulations. If you use Nikon's NX software you can actually edit and finesse the presets that are already in the camera. Then you can download them back in as a custom preset. Great vid as always.
@@michael007ish thanks for the info! I have seen sights where you can download film simulations but nothing peaked my interest.
More just wishing Nikon would do something cool from their end with it.
And thanks for the “great vid as always” 🥰🥰🥰
Love the video. Fantastic personal review.
I need to know where you bought your sweatshirt from though. It’s really cool.
Please can you let me know? Thanks.
Some great pics here. Love your thoughts on the ZF. I was one who bought it and sold for the lack of grip. Don’t doubt it’s a great camera though. I have just ordered a Z8. You should offer some presets for sale given your obvious ability in b&w. Just checked your website to try and buy some! Anyway subscribed .
@@nobby090 thank you 3,000!! That’s much appreciated!! The Z8 is also a VERY good camera that I’m sure you will be more than happy with.
My favorite aspect of the Zf is the low light capability. The thing that I hate about it is the flippy screen. I also can't believe that the only way to remotely trigger the shutter is via bluetooth on a retro camera.
@@thomaschamberlin2485 I also enjoy using the Zf in darker environments. Tried shooting in Tokyo the other night, the camera was great, my hands FROZE so it was more of a eat pizza and go home night, haha.
I don’t do remote shooting with it, but a couple pocket wizards won’t do the trick?
No manual cable release? Really? My Fuji has a manual cable release
@ not something I have ever needed or wanted so no worries from me…
I found that if you plug in a microphone receiver it blocks the flippy screen if vlogging.
@@photofervorphotography4997 another good point against not using it to vlog, thanks!
Just shot a memorial service for a friend and earlier shot a sports event with it. It’s my fun camera too! Lovely shots and vids, Zf rules!💪🏽👍🏾
@@mrdarryljones1 amazing to hear!! And thanks!!
I love how your videos look from Nikon ZF. Which picture style did you use?
I also wonder which lenses you used. I have the 24-120mm f4 and the 40mm f2.
@@Musicus82 thanks! I’m not using any picture style for the videos. There are all SOOC with almost no tweaking in post. Quite nice eh!
The video and photos here are from the 40/2, 85/1.8, 35/1.4, 28/2.8 mainly. All the primes are great fun!
@@jasonhalaykophotography Thanks a lot. I will try neutral profile next time and aperture wide open. Probably it will help 😊
Mate it is a beautiful and useful camera. But the real added value is your eye and work. Congrats for your shots. Please mate make a video about the shooting of this beautiful japanese wooman and your editing from the beginning to the end!!!! ;)
@@karimlahlou132 thank you!! I actually have two different videos with that model on my channel. She is in the thumbnails of the videos so it will be super easy to find them. And I’ll consider the editing workflow video, but is so all over the place it’s almost embarrassing, haha.
Thanks for the amazing comment!
@jasonhalaykophotography thanks!!
Also a Zf user, couple of thoughts. Negatives: 1/ love to use both the 3d tracking and AF-C, and switch between them often. It takes a bit of work to set up and there aren't that many customizable buttons, 2/ grip - the additional 3rd party grips work well, but it also adds about 100g to the camera weight, which for a lightweight setup is noticeable and I can feel it. 3/ the dpad feels a bit cheap. That's it really. Everything else is really well designed, and I love the camera especially for: 1/ it's Dynamic range, 14 stops is crazy, in facts it's more than in Z8, and so is the 8 stops image stabilization, 2/ fast and reliable AF, I never had this much keepers, and the assist function when shooting with manual focus lenses is just beautiful, 3/ analog dials. For me this is much faster and more intuitive to control than any menu. This kind of retro looking cameras I feel developed a renome as design-biased rather than capability-biased. But the Nikon Zf is anything but a lifestyle camera. It looks nice, very nice in fact, but it's the capabilities where this camera really shines. Zf is a very, very capable camera and I love it for that more than for the design.
@@tomxaak very good points indeed!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
same zf user, same tokyo trip last week
@@9iuhao nice, hope you had a great time in Tokyo!
@@jasonhalaykophotography Enjoyed the vibe over there. City view and street scene of Japan are much different from those in China. 10 days trip of Tokyo, Kawakura, Izu and Numazu while making a lot of cityscape and countryside shot.
I use it too and the image quality is amazing. Especially in raw and with the mechanical shutter which preserves all the information. A friend of mine who has the z6ii and with whom I compared the files I have to say that those of the zf are clearly better even if I think they have the same sensor. It will be due to the processor I don't know. but the dynamic range is greater and the colors are more beautiful.
Which gimbal did you use for video shooting?
@@Stesalti amazing to hear!
For the random clips of Tokyo it all handheld, for the work stuff if was a Ronin. Worked great!
Which lens are you using the most with Nikon ZF?
I would say at the moment my Nikon Zf gets the Z85/1.8 the most these days. I like the distance it allows me when shooting street photography here in Tokyo.
Film Sims are overrated IMHO, but you can really well customize the picture profiles in the camera, or outside the camera and upload it there.
Is it really any different from the fuji series? Or just more expensive ?
@@itsallminor6133 I have used several FujiFilm systems and it’s hard to say really. The Zf is full-size so that helps in some ways, but is not the end all and be all for sure. Kinda depends on your preferences. I have lots of good Nikon lenses, so happy Nikon came out with this style of camera. But have enjoyed the X-H2s and of course the GFX system by fuji in the past as well.
@jasonhalaykophotography suppose. For me I use a Fuji xt20 as a "fun camera". I have a few "fun" type cameras. Some older film I still shoot too. For more serious things it's primarily Nikon f system and Sony e mount Who knows? Whatever, right..
@@itsallminor6133 lots of "fun" cameras out there for sure. Fuji has some I would love to get my hands on if I was rolling in cash. What is important is you find a system that works for you and get out to take the best pictures you can. Good luck!!
I switched from a full time Fuji shooter since the xt2 and do not regret my decision of switching to the zf. I thought the film sims were going to be missed, but I was wrong! The colors on the zf are absolutely gorgeous. Even my wife has commented how she loves the colors from the Nikon over “whatever else” I was using lol. I made a lot of money with Fuji no doubt, but what was the final nail in the coffin was when people started ordering more and more prints bigger than 8x10, and I noticed almost every shot was missed focus. The Nikon has been almost 100% in focus accuracy. I’m so glad I switched. I primarily do high volume head shots, and the new season for me is about to start, I can’t wait to see the large prints now that I know the camera is working with focus as intended.
@ amazing!! Great to hear you are so happy with the Zf 🥰 Good luck with all your headshots!
Love the video. Fantastic personal review.
I need to know where you bought your sweatshirt from though. It’s really cool.
