  • Sawing the center of a steel belt buckle out of 10 gauge steel. Hand drawn and hand made. These small things can give you the independence of creation. If you can draw it you can saw it. Perfecting saw work on thicker steel helps teach control of saw so when transferring to smaller gauge precious metals such as copper, nickel, brass, sterling and especially gold the error of mistakes is more forgiving and less frustrating.

I use a 6 inch German jewelers saw. #6. Blade. There is also a #8 blade. And Rio Grande Silver sell. The blades are NOT #08.... THEY ARE #8. I use #8 blades now. They are bigger. 01 TO 08 ARE SMALL blades. The material I'm cutting is 11 gage and 10 gage.

Hi, thank you for sharing this video! Do you need a special blade to saw steel? So far as I know (and as I've practiced) jeweler's saws can only be used on softer metals such as copper, silver, etc. I tried once to saw a piece of steel, gauge 24(0.5mm), and failed. Is there a proper brand of blade I should go with? Thank you.

I just watched this and had the same question. I clicked on his name and scrolled thru his videos and found one on setting up the saw and blades. #6 jewelers blades ( not #6/0). watch video to find out how to tighten and listen the ring tone when plucked.

@@patsmith5236 I have silversmithed since the 1970s, but also build bicycles from 4130 CrMo steel. I have cut details in 4130 with a jewelers saw, but I do run through blades quickly. The use of beeswax as a blade lubricant helps tremendously. I haven't used other types of wax. BMauney has excellent saw technique. It takes practice.

Great but he doesn't tell us the set up and the blade or where to get them so video is pretty much useless
