  • This video teaches the basics of how to use a jeweler's saw.
For simple shapes like those shown here, I mark the metal with a soldering pick (or any other pointy metal) and use a plastic stencil.

So helpful, thanks. That really clarified things for this total beginner - I found about at least four things I've been doing incorrectly.

One thing that might be helpful to mention is that the gauge of the metal should accommodate 3 saw teeth, this will help you to pick the right size blade. In other words, when you hold the sawblade up next to the metal there should be 3 teeth in the thickness. This will help you avoid having the blade get stuck - it looks like to me that the blade you used was too aggressive (but then 22g copper flexes a lot)
    Otherwise, nice job!

Yeah telling how to pick the right size would have been a perfect "saw basics" tip! Thanks Addison! I often just grab a size close to the middle of my rack and use it in an all-purpose fashion now that I so rarely break blades. Haha I can hear my teacher's voice now.. "Always use the right saw blade for the job. Changing your blade is really not that time consuming."

Very clear tutorial, thank you. I actually had no idea you had to compress the saw frame when getting the blade secured. The blade kept bowing during cuts and it made it impossible to really use efficiently.

how do u put the blade in an angle without pushing forward? Lol idk why but I feel like I would have a hard time without breaking the blade.

Hi! How do i keep my lines straight?! They r wonky and i am struggling. :( any tips u can share? Pls and thank you!

    • @BrandonRubin17

Hi Elena! The less forward pressure you put on the saw the easier it is to control. A smooth vertical pull while focusing on following your line will help it go straighter. At first my hand wanted to push because that's how we cut with knives, but I had to remember that the saw teeth are doing all the work. Even the straights of cuts though you will need to do a little filing or sanding that edge to get it nice and clean!
