Hey man, this was a rare video speaking directly to me. I loved listening to you talk through the comparison between youtube and film making....you had awesome points throughout! Really loved when you made the comparison with the independent video...just walking into a store and getting the shot...where with commercial world....it's hours of prep, tons of extras...brand hiding etc....No one ever thinks about how a simple image/shot can be so complicated (expensive) to create unless you are in that world! Looking forward to hearing more from you man. Really happy you popped up on my feed. Best o luck on your journey to 1M. -David
Hey.. glad you're not become a lawyer or doctor, but a filmaker.. because your video is amazing, full of passion! So dynamic and love the energy! Been subscribing since you have 50k subs, now it's been twice.. and I hope you get more and more subs. Thanks for making a UA-cam video tutorial.
This video really resonated with me. I’ve been doing commercials for small businesses and some of it is so ungodly stressful but out of it, it’s made me want to do videos for people like me who have been through some really horrible beginnings in life and have fought against adversity but were able to come through it and do something amazing in life. Great content man. Really enjoy your videos daily. Something occurred to me the other day on a hike, the higher you rise, the longer the sun shines on you. Hope that helps if you’re ever feeling like you’re down in a cold dark valley. Keep up the creativity, bro!
It’s crazy... a lot of Potato Jet’s and Peter’s older videos are popping up in suggested videos. I’m loving re-watching their older stuff to how far they have come!!
We finally get to see more than just that one corner of your apartment! Thanks man. Been learning a lot form you. Getting back into photography and video after 30 years (35mm film and VHS was what I using back in high school). The fundamentals haven't changed (thankfully).... what used to take forever to do can be done in a fes seconds with GIMP or OpenShot now.
This video just upped your credibility by like 1000% dude. So cool to see people in the commercial field actually utilizing UA-cam and not just talking smack on it.
Love your videos man. This one really pointed out the fact that larger productions in a way stifle creativity. I vow to make more short-form small cast and crew this year. For the LOVE of it. Thanks, JET.
That was amazing… One of the best things I've seen regarding UA-camrs concerning filming, and media etc. for a while. Makes a welcome change from people harping on about new mirrorless cameras, and which brand is top dog. Very good show-and-tell... Well done.
Thanks for this amazing inspirational video Potato Jet! I'm currently going to school for a major in film and am in my second year. I'm still figuring out what I would like to do but this has guided me more towards maybe UA-cam. I started my first short film about a few weeks ago and it's two minutes long. It's just fun getting together with a group of people and being able to decide what to do. I hope I will continue to get more amazing tips from you! :)
Same reason why i started my youtube channel :D Stress that you get from commercial work is to high. What i love about youtube is the client is yourself. So that you can create what you love, instead of what the client wants... Anyways, i feel you man.. Love your work! And that j-turn.. :D i wonder how many takes i would have to shoot to get that perfect right in the middle shot :D
I'm just on my first bigger 3-week-production through Brazil, Germany and Sweden. Everything you tell is true. Love you so much! Keep on the great work
Maybe the best 11:39 long education on the process and business of filmmaking I have ever seen. Yes, as creatives, we definitely need an outlet to do our own thing. We'll just end up hating to work when it's always about the client... Keep up the great work.
I had the privilege to work as a DP on a couple projects in a previous life, and your comment about how close everyone gets and the wrap party... spot on. I was also fortunate enough to work with mostly very easy going directors who basically said, “Do your thing.” They are the best. Getting back into video and UA-cam is a great platform to just let your creativity run wild. It’s the editing that is slowing me down... so much easier to shoot it and give it to the editor to cut. Gotta keep learning. Keep up the inspirational and informative content.
As someone working to create a decent channel as a hobby, I really appreciate the hard work that goes into making good content. The thing about really great content is that it seems effortless, which is the exact opposite of reality. Also, you often really work hard on something and immediately after release it gets shit on. That, perhaps, is the most difficult thing to deal with.
Bother Gaming yes I don’t think fiat would be to happy that Potato showed us that:) it says: fiat is nice, but if u want reliability buy Totota:) Reminds me of bmw>merc meme (I don’t think it was advertising), where Mercedes truck is driving bmws and at the bottom it says: Mercedes too can bring driving joy, or something like that:)
If you want a large vehicle to film from a high angle and fit a 4-5 person crew, the only thing in the FIAT corporate lineup that fits the bill would be a Dodge Durango.
This video was fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing all that and also having so much fun! I've slowly been getting deeper into photography and videography as just a hobby and even getting some work through it, and this gave me a lot of insight on how much I should actually push it into a career or keep developing my other work (English teaching in Japan). Thanks so much!
One thing no one escapes is time spent, and boy do I wish I had bags worth of time. But that doesn’t stop me and shouldn’t anyone. Bless the people and create art! 💛
Wow mate! Thinking the same. All that like/dislike thing with a client is the most stressfull thing. What I like about bigger productions, is that everyone on the set want the same - capture good/epic shots.
UA-cam filmmaking is here only about 5-10 years and is relatively new type of the business. Impossible to judge as a better/worse or morePro/lessPro. It's just different and it ain't easy. So many people fail on UA-cam. Good vid potato.
My fav vid from you! I thought it would go from UA-cam to "pro" commercials. I had NO idea of all the work, paid extras, etc that go into the vid of the kid in line at the register wow! Thanks for making youtube your home.
Dude you are just speaking my mind its good to hear this coming from someone high up the production ladder. Not much creative control over what you are creating for other clients.
Dude, i love watching your videos. I personally have not much to do with the film-topic, i don't do it nor do i know much about it, but somehow it's very interresting and calming to watch you well made videos. Also you're simply someone who is funny and authentic and i like listening to you talking camera-stuff ^^ Keep making videos like this :)
Used to work in commercial post production. Left the industry about 8 years ago. Pretty much for the exact same examples you brought up. Did something completely different for those 8 years. But getting back into it for myself... Because i genuinely miss the process and the work. Great to see someone else share a similar perspective. Subscribed.
New sub here from Film Riot recommended videos. There was so much good about this video I lost track. The storytelling was phenomenal. The pacing spot on. Loved ahwooga, the punch, and all the location changes mid story. Especially appreciated the motivations for wanting to do your own thing. The explanation of all the trouble you went through to get that one single shot in the convenience store was profoundly poignant. That whole world seems so fake and stale compared to UA-cam.
for me youtube is a hobby. I have a job and never expect too make my hobby a career. My addiction is buying all these expensive cameras and lenses plus a gimbal. Hardly use 60% of my gear but I LOVE it when i do. And i'm a novice with camera experience. Love your channel
hey Jet ! just wanna say that I love your videos. Thank you for making them. Since yesterday I'm on your UA-cam page. Didn't stop watching your videos. So informative and entertaining at the same time haha...
Enjoyed this video. Took me back to when I directed/dped my first indy film when everything was brand new and position responsibilities bled into one another. Thanks for sharing your perspective and experience on the types of production scales and the role responsibilities one can expect. Also, very nice J-turn! :P
haha your impersonation of the producer was spot on. I work on a lot of commercials and TV shows as a production coordinator & production manager, and listening in to the line producer on the phone, "it's not in the budget" is the number one phrase!
Potatoe Jet!! I’m a small UA-camr. Born and Raised in Southern Cal. Living in Dallas Right now! I have been in the media production since i was in the 8th grade. Played football until I was 28...became Sales Manager for years at various car dealerships. Now, I am on the UA-cam platform...I’ll see you Matti, and Peter McKinnon at the top one day!! Appreciate your knowledge sir!!!
I went the opposite route; started making home & YT videos, then went into freelance, and then ended up full-time in marketing. I didn't like freelancing, and couldn't handle being the face of a UA-cam channel. Really admire people like you who can put yourself out there despite fear, criticism, and the constant grind before seeing any success. Quality channel, PJ.
I must confess I passed by your videos for a few weeks before I clicked on one today. What was I thinking? Totally enjoyed the themes and pacing. I’m a subscriber now.
I never really understood how much work is involved in those youtube channels until I created a few movies myself this summer. Appreciete your work, It is always entertaining.
As Potato said, I'm making films for myself first, to share with the world. It's about getting better at the craft, doing it right. Two summers ago I started taking pictures with a 10 year old cyber-shot pocket camera making movies of different places. Right now I using an old Rebel. It's a lot of work putting out a 40 minute film.
I always learn a lot of technical stuff from your videos, Potato Jet, (thanks) from this one I just learnt about having fun and enjoying making UA-cam videos. As I am struggling with a channel of my own at the moment (well, actually not my channel, I just help out) that gets no views, it is the message of 'enjoy it' that I take away from this... let's be less depressed and serious and just have more fun! Maybe the views will come...
Lemme just say dude! You are totally awesome. I have just recent got into cameras and photography in the past week, and your content is BANGER 🔥 at 13 you are totally an inspiration!
❤ this! Especially the intro. The algorithm showing me a lot of your old videos today 👍. I was only part of one big production and that was as an extra in Atonement long before I had a UA-cam channel
The J-turn was great, definitely was impressed with that. You nailed the stress part right on the head man, sincerely believe that. It's interesting to see a filmmakers point of view on this!
Your way of explaining things............well.. it just makes sense!! Thanks for sharing your info, your knowledge of filming and giving us amateurs a look inside the profession. I think as UA-camrs we all strive for perfection but I know personally falling short isn't the end of the world and I think most feel the same! You Rock PJ, VERY entertaining and keep em comin!! -Scott
You deserve to have your own studio and make some great and pro content for yourself, while ppl also love them. Please keep it up. Like your 'free talk" and editing a lot.
Damn... WHAT AN INSIGHTFUL video!!! Seriously. Thanks. (I have been considering for awhile starting my youtube channel and this was straight up informative! Also, demystified a little bit why credits at the end of films are like a billion people long and how crazy budgets get spent for film productions)
It’s a cool topic. UA-camrs have to master EVERYTHING. Composition, talent, audio, editing, and promotion. Filmmakers leverage the talent of dozens of other people. Both are stressful in different ways.
As a pro TV Cameraman of nearly 20 years who works in live Outside Broadcast, we have a team of people lighting, exposing and matching our cameras. I did do a lot of Lighting Camera (PSC single Camera work) in the early days but kinda found my lane in Live TV. So now, I don't really have to worry about things - I just concentrate on delivering the goods. I bought myself a A6400 off the back of your films. Keep up the good work - don't give too much away :)
Hope you get that studio soon, someone is bound to see the entry and potential you got going on....I have played with editing some of my videos and to say I'm behind the curve is a understatement. New subscriber and stumbled on your videos a few days ago and have liked how quick you flow...GOOD LUCK MAN, N MAKE GOOD CHOICES!!
Great content. In my "real job" I've been working as a DP for over 20 years on the east coast, with a few occasional trips out your way each year. Refreshing look at the biz......
This make me feel a little better about the decisions I have made thus far in life. Thank you for sharing your perspective in video production, it helps more then you know!
Your boy Erick. he's your Grip. You should love him eternally. The fact that you say he's always there making the shoots better in a flexible roll means he's a pro and you should keep him close. Good grips are gold!
That opening shot was INSANE.
